Early Life
Jonathan was born in Lancaster, but raised in Ronks, Pennsylvania.

He graduated from Conestoga Valley High School in 2003 and was intending to go to Carnegie Mellon University but was casted as Rolf in a nation tour of The Sound of Music, so the admission was held off for a year.

After that tour, he realized he would "never be able to pay off these college loans" and moved to New York.

Jonathan performed at the Fulton Opera House in a variety of musicals. Some of which included The Sound of Music, Ragtime, Evita, My Fair Lady, Peter Pan, The Pirates of Penzance, and Rags. He also performed at the Ephrata Performing Arts Center in Bat Boy and Honk!.

Personal Life
Jonathan came out as gay in October 2009. He dated Zachary Quinto for a while, but in 2013, they were reported to have broken up.

He was listed in Out's Magazine's OUT100 as one of the 100 most compelling LGBT people in 2013 and then again in 2014. In 2014, he was named a Grand Marshal of the New York City Pride Parade.

Then in 2015, he was honored with the Point Horizon Award which recognized him as an advocate of the LGBTQ community.

As said by the Bayard Rustin Award, Jonathan is "a highly visible role model and activist for the LGBT community. And in this role, every day, he brings home the strong and resonant message that LGBT people can do anything, be anything, and live lives of value and worth."

Career
In 2005, Jonathan had his Broadway debut as an understudy and swing for musical In My Life. Being the understudy, he never performed as the lead.

However, in 2006, he originated the role of Melchior Gabor in Spring Awakening, a Broadway production. He played the role from December 10, 2006 to May 18, 2008. In May 2007, he was nominated for a Tony Award as Best Leading Actor in a Musical.

He appeared in many other roles. He was in the soap opera One Life To Live, Hair, Taking Woodstock, and an Off-Broadway production of Prayer for My Enemy.

Jonathan guest starred on Glee as Jesse St. James, who was in a number of episodes. On the show, he worked alongside of his former Spring Awakening co-star, Lea Michele.

In August 2010, he made his West End debut in Deathtrap. He also returned to Glee at the end of season two.

He voiced one of Disney's lead roles in Frozen, Kristoff. He worked on reprising the role in a short sequel, Frozen Fever.

Jonathan starred as Patrick Murray, in HBO's Looking. After the completion of that role, he played another one on HBO in The Normal Heart.

In 2015, he starred in one night only concert staging of How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.

He joined the cast of Hamilton, in March of 2015, and was nominated for a Grammy Award for the musical's original soundtrack, in the category of Best Musical Theater Album.

In the month of April 2016, Groff took off his crown at Hamilton and passed it on to the next contender, as he went on to work on other awaiting opportunities.

However, he made a return to attend the 70th Tony Awards. He was nominated for Best Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical, which his fellow cast member Daveed Diggs won.
