Their Moment

Requested by: lostboys_

There was once an wise saying about how a person's wedding day was the day they wouldn't ever forget. Alexander wasn't the type of man to believe in tales such as that, but as he found himself standing beside the altar, he started to think it was true.

Chimes rang and a symphony of instruments began playing as the procession began down the aisle towards him. Alexander straightened his back, watching every face wander up just as he had. His palms were sweating more by the second. One wrong move and it could all go to waste.

But then he sharply reminded himself not to worry about the little details. He was getting married. If only his mother was alive to see him then. She would have been so proud to see her boy all done up in his very best.

Alexander peered down the aisle. He laid eyes on his bride's sister, Eliza. She noticed him watching her, so she raised her eyebrows and winked in his direction. At her flirtatious action, he couldn't help but hide a blush.

Don't forget who you're marrying, his mind pestered. Just as the thought crossed, he heard the whispers rise among the guests. His beautiful bride was walking towards him. With a smile on her lips, dress trailing behind her, she looked like the most beautiful creature.

Angelica, his heart swooned. He watched anxiously as her father let go of her arm, slowly kissing her cheek. Her cheeks flushed red at the touch, but her smile only grew. Alexander's heart pounded quicker when she faced him.

A spark of energy was exchanged between them with just a glance. Angelica positioned herself up on the platform beside her fiancé.

The priest called for silence. He began speaking of all the little things to come in their marriage, how they would love one another for as long as possible, and that great things were in the future. Alexander grinned at the thought of these great things. They could start a life away from the madness of the war, with a few children, and just the right amount of love.

Angelica's mind also seemed to be working as the priest spoke. Her eyes glinted with a sense of passion for the man standing before her. In all her years of living, she never felt more pleased. She had finally found someone who understood and loved her. There was so much more to come, which only made her more anxious for their future.

"Do you take this man to be your husband?"

Reality. Angelica snapped out of her daze, blinking several times. Alexander, the priest, and all her relatives were watching and waiting for an answer. She cleared her throat and murmured, "I do."

Alexander let out a long breath of air. He only had to say the exact same thing, with the similar look of longing lust in his eyes. The question came and he replied, "I do."

The tense feeling that had been hanging over the room and it's people seemed to fade away slowly. As the priest began finishing up his well wishes, the almost wed couple linked hands. It caused them both to step even closer to one another.

"You may now kiss the bride," the priest murmured to the two of them. The crowd of relatives and friends all leaned forward on their feet intently. A hushed silence hovered them, just waiting to be burst.

Alexander wrapped an arm around her back, feeling his heartbeat increasing. She looked up at him with a questioning look as if to say what are you waiting for? He leaned forward on his feet, swooping her down in his arms, and placing a gentle kiss on her awaiting lips.

Applause erupted from behind them. There were hoots and hollers as the couple pressed their bodies closer together. Tears ran down Alexander's cheeks as he kissed his wife more passionately. He was married. It was a strong realization, one that knocked the wind out of him quickly.

Angelica wrapped her two arms around her husband's neck. She could feel wetness on his cheeks, so she stopped their kiss. Looking into his eyes, she could see he was sobbing uncontrollably. But he was crying out of happiness, not sadness.

"We're married," he finally choked out. She nodded her head several times. All she could do was press her forehead against his and whisper little nothing's in return. Before they could even exchange another kiss, guests swept them off their feet in separate directions.

The couple was ripped apart from one another, to be brought into other celebrations. Friends of the groom hollered and patted him on the shoulder, while relatives of the bride placed kisses on her cheek and gave her advice.

Angelica kept looking over the swarms of people to see if she could spot her husband. It made her heart sink when she realized they would be stuck on separate sides of the room for a few hours. With relatives and friends surrounding them, the conversations would certainly continue for a while.

Night began to fall and candles flickered from all sides of the room. Music began playing as couples took the floor to dance. Gowns swayed from side to side, laughter filled the room, and people filled their glasses frequently. It was quite the night, one that neither the bride or groom would forget.

At one point during the evening, Eliza drifted over to her sister's side. She didn't need to even say anything, by the look on Angelica's face it was obvious what was going through that woman's brain. "Have you two gotten some time alone?"

That's when her sister burst into sobs. She had tried to stay so strong the whole time, but her nerves snapped. Alexander was nowhere in sight. All she had wanted was to just be at his side on their special night. To have it taken away from her felt like the worst punishment.

Eliza set down her glass to comfort her upset sister. No words came out of her mouth, for she knew her sister was already preparing something.

"I-I know how selfish it is, but people don't understand. I have been planning this day since the beginning of time. To not be able to even see or dance with my husband is-"

"Hush." Eliza pressed her hands to her sister's face. "I'm not letting your night go to waste. Let me go find your beloved husband. You two are going to have all the time together you want this night." She didn't let her sister protest or stop her from pushing her way through the crowds to find the newly wed man.

It wasn't long before they crossed paths. She bumped into Alexander's arm and whispered a hello. He looked exasperated, just like his wife, who was across the room. "Eliza," he breathed.

Eliza didn't waste anytime. "Angelica needs you right now. She thinks her wedding and preparations have gone to waste. You two haven't seen each other the whole night, so give her something to remember."

"Take me to her immediately. You don't know how long I was searching for her." Alexander linked arms with Eliza, who's face turned a light pink at the touch. Get used to it, he's your brother in law, her mind persisted. She wasn't going to let any foolish feelings ruin things.

The two of them hurried over to Angelica, who was still teary eyed. When she saw her husband, her eyes lit up in a way Eliza had never seen them before. The newly weds leapt into each other's arms to embrace. As they signed in relief at their touches, Eliza scurried off to get another drink.

From that moment on, Angelica remained satisfied. She danced from side to side in her husband's arms, while relatives watched the couple spin around the floor. Her body felt alive with every swing, twirl, and exchange. It wasn't going to be something she'd ever forget.

Later that night, after the guests had cleared out of the home, the couple leaned against the wall exhausted. Angelica wiped her forehead and murmured, "That was-"

"Amazing," her husband cut her off. She managed to smile at him, even while her body ached from the excitement of the day. The two of them linked hands and heard up the stairs to her room, to rest for the night. Shortly the next morning they would begin their journey to their own home.

And so they stumbled into Angelica's room, a little tipsy from the alcohol, making sure not wake her siblings. But from behind her door, Eliza listened to the sound of their giggles and gasps. Her head hung lower as she thought back to the months prior. She could have been the woman in that room with Alexander.

But she had been too hesitant to take the chance. She let her sister have him, without looking back. And she had a difficult time convincing herself that it was the right decision to have made.

A/N: Thank you lostboys_ for the request! I used Eliza as how it was in historical terms with Angelica. But yeah, hope you liked how it turned out!
