Sunrise (3)

OC: Jane Youngs

A few months ago, if you had thought she'd move on, you would've received a laugh. But the woman who would laugh at you, was now satisfied with her life at the moment. No longer did she watch the sunrises, but kept things moving at her own speed. She had given up on the colors of the sky and all their hopes.

It had been a while since she'd seen the man she'd fallen in love with. And besides, it wasn't that she cared. At least, that's what she told herself everyday. She told everyone she had moved on from who she used to be, only not to be true to that herself.

"Why good morning, Jane," a voice behind her whistled slowly. She snapped back into reality and faced the person behind her. When she said moved on, she really had moved on from one love to the next.

Hair a mess, eyes barely open, was a man she had recently met and fallen in love with. It was a different love than she had with Alexander, this time more final. They took things slow, not just a one night stand.

Except the fact they had met on an unlikely night. After a few drinks, they wound up in each other's embrace, and things continued from there.

"John," she politely replied. She resisted all the urge to not giggle at his messy hair. He often wore it back in a ponytail, so it was a treat to see it wild and free.

He sauntered over to her, placing a kiss on her forehead before her lips. Jane leaned her head against his chest, listening to his beating heart.

The two of them had begun staying together only a month back when they decided their relationship was blossoming. Jane had packed up her things and moved in with him. And she would repeatedly say how it was the best decision in her life.

Breaking her thin lipped expression, Jane clutched at the fabric of his shirt, chuckling loudly. He looked down at her, pulling her face up to his. "Something the matter, dear?"

Nothing was the matter. Jane just sometimes found herself stuck in fits of laughter. Maybe it was because she finally found someone who cared for her, or that she was lying to herself a little bit everyday.

Whatever the case was, she ignored it. "It's nothing. You should get dressed." She linked arms with him and they walked back to their shared room. Jane collapsed on the bed, before watching him select his clothing.

"Someone should be dropping by in half an hour, if not sooner for business matters." He picked up a few cravats, obviously wanting to look his best for this person. Jane tilted her head curiously, letting her eyes trace up and down his body.

"And what does this person do for a living, if you don't mind me asking?"

John let out a sigh. "Well, he just got married about two months ago, so he's been occupied with getting his marriage together." He seemed interested with his reflection, as he kept touching his face and looking in the mirror.

"You remember that I wasn't able to attend to his wedding. I haven't even seen him since he was to be wed." Jane hummed a reply, but didn't say much else. Instead, she rose to her feet and helped him tie the cravat around his neck.

"He must be of some importance, for you to be getting this dressed up, my dear." Both of them smiled at one another in the mirror. John only ducked his head and nodded.

Just as predicted, there was a knock on the door almost a half hour later. From his study, John hollered for someone to answer it. Jane chuckled at his foolishness, since she was the only one in the house, and the only one who was able to answer it.

However, nothing could have prepared her for the person standing in the doorway. Almost like some invisible force knocked her over, Jane stumbled backwards when she recognized the face. "Alexander?"

Unbelievable, her mind pounded. He barely had time to say hello, when another familiar face popper out from behind him. Jane's blood ran cold. He brought his wife. Too much was happening for her in that moment.

Alexander took her hand gently and kissed it, hoping she wasn't too startled. "Jane, we meet again." When she didn't reply, only look at him with a stricken expression, he cleared his throat to grab her attention.

"Yes, it's a p-pleasure, Mr.Hamilton."

His wife stuck out her hand, which Jane half heartedly shook in return. Her head was spinning at an alarming rate and she couldn't feel anything. When she looked at him, her world stopped again and she got that unforgettable feeling.

It was just a kiss, she reminded herself, letting them step inside. Jane couldn't believe how selfish she was being and ignorant. The man was married now, there was nothing she could do about it.

"Are you close to Laurens? I didn't know you two knew each other." Alexander seemed slightly sarcastic in his words. By the way he was holding himself, she could tell he wasn't pleased with the situation.

Wiping her hand on her forehead, she replied with some confidence, "Yes, we've been together for a while now." That would surely knock him off his guard. And it sure did. While his wife beamed at the news, Alexander faltered and coughed.

"Together?"

Just at that moment, John rounded the corner, immediately wrapping the other man in a tight embrace. Jane crossed her arms, watching the two of them. The second they pulled apart, John said, "Oh, you've met Jane, I assume."

There was a strained feeling in the air, maybe only a feeling that two could feel. Clenching his hands together, Alexander managed to say with an insincere tone, "We have."

And then he scowled in her direction. Jane almost did the same back to him. Such a childish thing, she told herself. Scowling. She let out a light chuckle, but avoided anyone's eyes.

"Well, shall we get to business?" With a bright smile on his lips, John clapped his hands together. If only he knew. As much as Jane wanted to tell him right at that second, to confess that they had kissed, to say she still had feelings, her feet stayed firmly planted.

Both men started down the hallway, neither of them looking back. The door to the study slammed shut behind them.

An hour or so seemed to pass. Jane found herself listening to Eliza, who's name she'd finally learned again, ramble on about something. She was sweet, but quite talkative of her husband. When the study door opened, Jane practically leapt to her feet.

The two men wandered up the hallway, murmuring some words to one another. Their footsteps echoed along with them. As Alexander passed her, Jane grabbed his arm.

He didn't snap at all. Instead, he gave her a look and politely asked, "Yes?"

John watched intently. His heart swelled, thinking that his lovely Jane wanted to make an acquaintance with his friend. Nothing could have been more of a step forward for them, than that moment.

"Mr.Hamilton, may I have a word with you?"

Silence filled the room. Eliza nodded at her husband, who reluctantly followed the woman who had him by the arm. After being a safe distance away from both their lovers, she whispered, "I want to be very clear on something. That kiss means nothing to me anymore, you hear me? John is the man I love, don't ever think we even had something."

He laughed. "You think that I was actually thinking that? I agree, darling, my feelings if I ever had any are gone. I'm just shocked to find you with my best friend."

Jane backed away from him. Her voice kept wavering between volumes. "So? How does this affect you, if you are in love with another woman?"

A long pause passed. "You're leaving with your wife, Alexander. Don't be so foolish as to think of me again." He opened his mouth and she placed a hand over it.

But he pulled it off harshly. "And I wish you the same thing, miss. I know when a woman is lying to me. We both know we feel, now don't we?" Alexander still had her hand in his.

She glanced at their linked hands out of the corner of her eye. "All we had was a kiss, that was it. I never promise anything more, you went off and got married and I found myself a loving man. So leave, now that we have established our lives."

Alexander opened his mouth again, only this time for her to hiss, "It was just a kiss."

Tears pricked in the corners of her eyes. If either of their lovers had overheard, things would take a turn for the worse. But as she watched Alexander storm out of the room, trying to seem composed to his wife, her mind went blank with endless things.

It was astonishing to Jane how much of an impact one man could make on a lady. She fell, but not for many. Her heart would swoon but also scream at that the thought of him. In their time seeing each other again, they managed to establish that they were done.

And while she prayed to the skies to never see that man's face again, for all the damage he caused her weak heart, a part of her still thought back to their kiss, reminding her of the sunrises she had thrown just because of him.
