Sunrise

OC: Jane Youngs

There was nothing more beautiful than sunrises in New York. The sky would glow different colors and it was quite a surprise. It was a gift to all the people even if they didn't realize that.

Even though these special moments could only experienced in the morning, there was always one specific person watching. She would perch on the edge of the dock and admire the sunrise.

Since it was too early for most, often no one else was around. This allowed her mind to feel at ease. Constantly there was talk of war and terror, which was disheartening. She was able to forget all the issues and breathe for once.

However, one particular morning, someone else happened to be walking by. Her moment of silence was broken and she couldn't help but feel slightly frustrated.

"Are you alright?"

Jane's eyes opened. To her right was a man, who looked quite handsome. When he stepped into her field of vision, she corrected herself quietly. He was very handsome.

"Yes. I'm just admiring the sunrise." She swung her legs back and forth, not caring if it came across as unladylike. Her heart was leaping with joy for a man was speaking to her. It wasn't often men were associated with her.

He turned his head towards the bay and the distant horizon. "Quite an incredible one too, miss." Pausing, he cleared his throat. "I haven't introduced myself. I'm Alexander."

They shook hands. "Jane. Pleasure to meet you, sir." When he smiled, her heart started beating a little faster. His words were charming as was his personality.

"Do you do this often?" He gestured to the horizon before saying, "Look at the sunrise?"

Jane nodded. "I feel complete when the sun comes up over the water. Nothing can compare to seeing the beginning of a new day. It's unlike anything one can see." Realizing she practically spilled herself out to him, she blushed.

He seemed to be interested though. Alexander tapped his foot against the dock, before sitting down beside her. Their legs dangled off the side, feet barely touching the water.

"That's beautiful. You have a way with words, Jane. And a fascination in sunrises." He leaned closer to her and she smiled. With everything he said, the more she wished to say.

"I'm flattered." She placed her hand on the dock only to accidentally brush it with his. Eyes widening, she pulled it back and cleared her throat loudly.

Alexander bit the inside of his cheek as he looked at the woman in front of him. How had he not seen this beauty yet? She must have passed him a few times. Maybe he never cared to look close enough.

But there was something about Jane that had him on the edge, waiting for more. She actually had enough of a heart to watch the start of the day. All alone, on the edge of a dock, she found herself at peace with just the break of light.

"Tell me about yourself."

Jane tilted her head. "There's nothing to tell. I live with grace and struggles. I worry at night for the future of this country. Tomorrow might never come. But the sunrise reminds me that we made it another day."

The gentle ripples of waves hit their feet but neither of them minded. Alexander smiled at her. "Our independence isn't long away. You won't have to worry any longer about that."

She tried to believe him, but it was difficult to think of that. With all that was going on, it seemed that was unlikely to ever happen. "I do hope so. We have fought, slept restlessly, and been forced to pay taxes far too long."

Subconsciously, both of them looked around. If a redcoat heard any of that, they would be sent to be punished. Or even their death. Life was harsh with the feeling of being watched with you at all times.

Alexander murmured, "Trust me, progress is being made. As a woman you probably don't see much going on behind the curtains, but I can promise you that things are improving."

Jane felt his hand on her waist and she didn't let it bother her. "Well, at least there is something happening. I would have taken a risk if no one else was."

"You would do that? Risk your life for this country?" God, she was amazing. Alexander felt himself very intrigued and attracted to her all at once. She was so compassionate and independent. All her traits connected perfectly.

"Of course. I would do what it takes to bring us closer to freedom." Jane sighed, "Women are just as important as men in this revolution."

Alexander brushed a lock of golden hair out of her eyes. She met eyes with him but didn't say anything. "You seem determined. I can't say much on the subject, but I will say that women have potential in shaping our future."

As she went to answer him, out of the corner of her eye, the sky began to light up. Jane gasped and pointed out on the horizon. "Look. Isn't it the most magnificent thing you've ever seen?"

She didn't notice that he wasn't looking at the sunrise. He was looking directly at her, with a satisfied look. She was certainly the most magnificent sight he had ever seen. Slowly, he reached towards her, placing one hand on her cheek.

Jane turned at his touch. They sat across from each other, definitely much closer than before, staring at each other. He made the move, pulling her face towards his gently.

Their lips attached almost instantly. As the sun rose, their passion grew stronger by the second. Jane felt herself slipping into a daze, she almost forgot where she was. Her heart was beating in sync with Alexander's, in that familiar lovesick way.

Just as the sky turned bright orange, Jane pulled back. She didn't let go of him however, her head leaned against his. Neither of them was worrying about anyone seeing them.

Taking a deep breath, she finally pulled back and rose to her feet. Alexander jumped to his feet, linking their hands together. "You're right. It's a magnificent sunrise."

She chuckled and looked on the horizon. "And that kiss was even more magnificent." She paused and chuckled. "Do you often kiss women you meet?"

Alexander shook his head. "Only the ones who have me begging for more."

Jane tightened her grip on his hand. "Well, if you want more you'll have to wait. We might never cross paths again."

With a smirk, he whispered, "Oh, we certainly will meet again. Trust me." He winked and her heart melted. He looked so flustered but composed all at once.

"This was quite the sunrise, Alexander." Her hands drifted apart from his. "Goodbye."

Jane gave him one last look before heading her way home. Wherever the road took her, she would go. Her head was lightheaded and she was still trying to comprehend all that happened.

And with just that kiss, her future sunrises would forever be changed.

A/N: Thank you multi-fanDOOM for the request! Really inspired by listening to Sunrise from In The Heights because that song is just amazing. Anything at all can happen just before the sunrise, of course.
