Late Night
Angelica sat alone at her windowsill, her legs curled up, as she watched the falling snow outside. Seemingly, her mind kept wandering and she tried to think of other things, but she couldn't get one person off her mind.
Alexander. Even though he was married to her sister, there was something about him that still has Angelica very intrigued in the man. Deep inside her aching heart, she just wished that she had taken him as her own. But Eliza was happy and that's what mattered, right?
She let out a long sigh. "Why are you even falling for such a..." Her words trailed off, unable to find what she wanted to say. She kept trying to herself that falling for him was wrong, that if she said anything it would ruin everything.
But she had already fallen in love. What more could she hold back now?
As the thought crossed her mind, the door to her room opened before she could react. Eliza and her husband, Alexander, stumbled into the room kissing each other in a playful manner.
Angelica gulped loudly. She prayed that the dim light in the room would hide the growing tears in her eyes. The couple turned and saw Angelica. Eliza's eyes widened and she stuttered, "An-ange-"
Her sister just waved. "Yeah, I'm here."
All the while Eliza was explaining and making the situation more awkward than it already was, Alexander was staring at Angelica.
He was married to Eliza, but he had a moment with Angelica way back when he was a single man, even before he met Eliza.
Something about her made his heart still do a flip, but he promised himself never to bring that up.
She chuckled, which sounded slightly forced. "Your room is across the hall, last time I checked." Eliza grabbed Alexander's hand and pulled him along with her, her cheeks still bright red from interrupting her sister.
As they left the room, Angelica turned to look outside the window again. There was already some tiny snowflakes falling from the dusky clouds up above. They stuck to the window and then quickly melted at the touch of warmth.
She pressed her hand up against the frozen pane, her hand shrinking back by instinct. Her eyes shut and she let out a long sigh, one that seemed endless.
And then she thought to herself, Angelica, why are you doing this to yourself? Still silently dreaming about Alexander, who she was aware was just a door away, Angelica closed her eyes and tried to get some rest for herself and her endless mind.
When she was awaken a few hours later, there was a knock at her door. It was a timid knock, like someone who was possibly thinking about not even knocking at all.
Groaning and fixing her dress, Angelica rose from her spot on the windowsill, finding herself rubbing her arms for warmth, and answered the door. Her room had fallen dark now, as the moon was awake and the city asleep.
She was quite surprised to see the person she saw in the doorway. "Alexander?" The young man bowed his head, politely smiling. Angelica felt flames in her heart and every other place grow as he began to whisper.
"I'm sorry to bother you so late in the evening, but mind if I come in?"
Angelica probably should have questioned why he wanted to come into her room, but at that moment her mind just whirred and sang to her, begging her to let him in.
"Yes, of course, come in."
She stepped aside, allowing him to enter the room, before shutting the door not to wake the rest of the house. Alexander walked around her room, observing every inch and corner.
Angelica wished that she could know what he was thinking in that brain of his. Folding her hands together, she whispered, "Why are you here so late at night?"
He didn't reply to her at first, maybe he was teasing her, as he brushed his fingers along the dusty bookshelf in the corner. Slowly, on his feet, he turned and faced her.
Angelica finally got a good look at him again, his hair falling to his shoulders, sleep shirt open just a little to expose his chest, and a smile on his lips.
"Have you gotten any sleep? You're still dressed in your clothing from today." Swiftly, before she could say anything, Alexander was in front of her, looking her up and down.
Angelica let herself allow him to keep looking at her. She knew he was just trying to flirt with her like he always managed to do. "Are you suggesting I take off my clothing?"
There was more silence before he nodded his head. "You need to sleep in proper clothing."
She whispered back in his face, "I am not getting undressed in front of you, if that's what you're asking for. Tell me the reason you're actually here."
With a defeated sigh, Alexander murmured into her ear. "Is everything alright, Angelica? You seemed to be unsettled earlier."
Angelica stood across from Alexander, the man she had adored since laying eyes on him. She had spent so many nights like this one, just dreaming about him and his warm embrace that she would never get to feel.
"I'm fine." As she went to smile forcefully, Alexander grabbed her shoulders. Their shadows shifted against the wall.
"You're not fine."
Fed up with how attractive he looked and how vulnerable she was feeling, Angelica whisper shouted, "Fine, you got me, I'm not exactly okay..."
"What's wrong? You can tell me anything, Angelica..." His hand as if by instinct went to her cheek, to reassure her. There was a long pause before Angelica spoke.
"I'm in love with you."
There was more silence between the two of them, as she gave Alexander time to react. His expression changed, and it was something that she could no longer read and tell what he was thinking.
"Look, you told me to tell you what's been bothering me and the fact is you have been bothering me, Alexander. I can't get you out my mind no matter how hard I try, no matter how many times I tell myself it's wrong, I can't."
She took his hand from its place on her cheek and murmured, "Ever since that ball, I have been up some nights, thinking about you. I don't know what's gotten over me. I mean, you're married to my sister, and it's completely outrageous of me to think of you romantically."
Angelica tried to hold back her tears. "Please say something, Alexander. I don't mean to cause damage to your relat-"
Alexander shushed her. A little taken aback, Angelica frowned. Seemingly looking for the right words to say to his sister-in-law, he placed his hands in hers.
"What did I tell you on the night we met?"
His sudden whisper made her heart thud with such persistence. "You told me..." Angelica trailed off, meeting his eyes. Oh, those eyes, how they made her weak in the knees and dizzy in the head.
Looking confidently at Alexander, she whispered back, "You will never be satisfied."
Alexander took a daring step closer, the wooden planks creaking beneath his feet. "And I said that to you, Angelica." She couldn't really read his blank expression, but Angelica could certainly see within his eyes and see that there were tears.
"Angelica, listen to me. I'm married to Eliza, a woman who I love and will never stop loving-"
His hand tightened its grip on her hand. "But I am never going to be a satisfied man. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I-"
Angelica dropped his hand from hers. Keeping her posture perfect, she whispered, "No. You can't do this. I don't even know why I told you that I love you." As Alexander tried to interject, Angelica practically shouted, "Think about Eliza. The woman who you love, the woman who is my sister. We can't do this."
Yet again, he desperately tried to say the words that were on the tip of his tongue. Angelica stopped him abruptly again, taking a few steps towards the door. "Alexander. If you say those words, you are going to regret it. You can't do that to Eliza."
Something about what Angelica said, maybe it was the way she said it, made Alexander pause in the moment. His mind was at work, but nothing was computing. "You're right..."
Angelica nodded, pleased, even though there were many tears glistening in the corners of her eyes. "Now leave, and go and rest with Eliza."
Alexander hesitated before stepping past Angelica, who had a firm but yet again forced frown. She watched and waited for him to be clear across the hall, hand on the doorknob.
Just as she thought he would go in, without a word, Alexander turned around and said softly into the space separating them, "Angelica-"
She didn't let him finish. The door slammed shut, and Angelica didn't care if it woke the entire household.
Clutching a single hand over her mouth, she slumped to the ground with her back against the door. She sobbed as quietly as she could, her heart breaking all the more time she spent thinking about him.
He belonged with Eliza. She knew that. But telling him what she felt for him was a mistake in her mind. She couldn't betray Eliza. And Alexander certainly couldn't either, by returning the affection to Angelica, the affection she so greatly wanted.
"What am I doing? Why am I thinking-"
She couldn't take it. Too much information was running through her brain for her to handle.
As she sobbed, trying to contain her emotions and feelings that she had about Alexander, Alexander himself stood outside her door, torn between both women in his life.
He hit his head backwards against the door that Angelica sobbed from within, and murmured into the quiet household, "God, what have I done?"
. . . . . . . . . .
A/N: I had this idea and just ran with it, so it's a bit longer one shot. I think writing Alexander & Angelica's relationship is thrilling because they're an interesting pair.
