Coffee Days

Requested by: Omqxbri

The weeks leading up to finals were miserable for one particular orphan. Struggling to stay awake at night, writing until his hand cramped up, Alexander was practically falling apart at the seams. As much as grades mattered, his teachers always said his health was much more important. So he finally gave in and listened.

After studying for hours on end, he stumbled to the nearest coffee shop. It wasn't uncommon to see him in there. Or any other sophomore for that matter.

"Espresso," he murmured dryly to the person behind the counter. "Grande, thank you." As the man began making his drink, he searched in his pockets for his wallet. Fishing out a five, the teenager patiently waited.

When his order was completed, Alexander searched for a table among the shop. There wasn't many people in the shop, besides half asleep high schoolers. One of his enemies from the debate team smirked in his direction as he passed by.

Ignoring the look, he found a table in the corner and sat down. The burning liquid slipped down his throat as he consumed the coffee. Grimacing, shutting his eyes, he decided to wait a moment to drink it.

At that moment, the door to the coffee shop snapped open. Three sisters, each wearing a unique color, stepped inside. One of them was babbling about something she had read online, while the other two stared up at the menu. The second they decided, the three of them headed to the counter to make their purchases.

The three of them grabbed their straws and drinks. One, a bit shorter than the other two, dressed in a yellow sundress, excitedly declared she was going to find a table. Alexander realized how long he must have been staring, so he turned back to his own table and pretended to be occupied.

But his eyes wandered back to the girls. One of them took off her sunglasses and placed them in the crook of her halter top. Alexander suddenly felt touched by a sudden force at the sight of her eyes. Oh, her eyes.

The other sister muttered something, before leading the way back to the tables. Perfectly aligned as they walked, the sisters clearly had an affect on everyone they passed. Even Alexander's enemy from the debate team blushed at the sight of them.

Out of all the places they could have chosen to sit, the sisters picked a table right beside Alexander. Sliding down in his seat, praying they didn't call him out for watching, he sipped his coffee nervously. If they hadn't already, they certainly did then.

The oldest looking one smirked. "Haven't ever seen you around here." Her sisters turned their attention in the direction of the sophomore as well. Alexander still felt himself glancing at the one with the sky blue eyes.

"Oh, I'm not really out of my place often. You know, mostly studying." Great, that's an absolute turn off for girls, Alexander thought to himself. But the sister surprised him by leaning forward on her chair.

"So you're well educated? And you take pride in school obligations?"

Alexander definitely could feel his cheeks turning a bright red color. He wasn't used to attention, much less from girls. Usually when he talked about writing and reading, people ignored him.

"Yeah, definitely. I'm usually referred to as the one who goes above and beyond." Oh, here comes the bragging, a voice in his head whispered. Alexander clenched his teeth together as he grinned at the girls.

"Take it as a compliment, whether or not it's intended that way." She smiled at him for a little too long before saying, "God, I haven't even introduced myself. Angelica. And that's Eliza and Peggy." The other two waved at him.

"Pleasure to meet you," he replied. Eliza. So that was the beautiful eyed girl's name. He took note of it, but continued to smile at the sisters.

"So do you come by here often?" Angelica seemed highly intrigued in him. By the way her lips formed at each word with such delicacy, he knew she was onto him. It only made the conversation more delightful.

"No, not if there's not anything interesting for me to watch here." He could have just as easily been talking about the televisions situated around the room, but they both knew he wasn't. Angelica leaned forward, beginning to speak, when Eliza looked over at him.

Oh dear. Angelica internally begged for some sort of reason why. She could recognize the look in her sister's eyes almost immediately. It was the falling in love one. The breathlessly caught in a tangle of dreams about some boy.

Sipping her coffee, she gazed directly at Alexander, while her sister spoke. Angelica continued to watch her out of the corner of her eye as she chatted with the sophomore. A nervous feeling bit angrily at the back of her neck and she couldn't ignore it.

Of course this one was the one her sister took heart to. Out of all the guys they met on campus, Eliza chose to look at this one like he was her soulmate. She just had to chose the guy she personally had an interest in.

"I'm going to get a refill." Angelica glanced down at her coffee, shielding the look of loss and betrayal in her eyes. It was certainly the perfect moment for her sister to chat with the boy. At least, that's what she hoped would happen, for both their sake and hers.

Barely steps away from the table, she heard the two of them began talking. Glancing over her shoulder, it seemed that they were getting along quite fine. Peggy looked over at her older sister and just shrugged silently.

"You're an orphan?"

In amazement, Eliza listened to all the untold takes he once experienced. Alexander rambled on about his childhood eagerly. "Yes, my mother died, and my father left. I somehow got out of that place and here, where my studies are the one thing keeping my alive."

"But your journey is incredible. You need to write about it. Let the world know your struggles and-" Eliza was cut off by his hand grabbing hers. Both of their eyes widened, hoping they hadn't crossed any boundaries.

"It's a wonderful idea. I don't have any time to write my life story though. It's barely even started!" He chuckled dryly.

"Maybe you'll have many other tales to tell along the way, side by side with someone who loves you dearly." Cheeks flushing a bright pink color, the sister clutched his hand back. Eliza didn't know what had come over her. She never acted so foolishly around guys.

Alexander replied, "Yes, let's hope." He paused, realizing to himself how soft her skin was. Both of their hands were still linked, as if they were unable to be torn apart. "Do you want to hang out sometime? I have to get going, but-"

God, yes. Eliza leaned forward and rushed to speak. "Yes, of course. Let me give you my phone number." She picked a pen from her pocket, quickly leaning over his hand and scribbling down the number. Alexander didn't even protest as the ink began to mark his skin.

Pleased, he rose from his chair. "Lovely meeting you, Eliza." He slightly nodded in Peggy's direction and then knowingly smiled straight at the other sister. And with a few steps out the side door of the coffee shop, he was gone.

Angelica came back from the coffee counter, with four cookies and a drink. The girl seemed to wisely grabbed four, to show the new guy that he was welcome to hang with them anytime. But her heart sunk in her chest when she realized Alexander wasn't there.

"Rushed out of here. Don't know why," the littlest sister muttered, sliding her thumb across her phone screen. Angelica realized her mouth was hanging open, so she swallowed a lump in her throat and turned to her other sister. The look on her face said it all.

Eliza either asked to see him again or something more. Each possibility was dreadful enough. Angelica steadily sat beside her sister, being bombarded with what just happened with the charming sophomore.

Things were going both uphill and downhill. It was difficult to tell how each sister was secretly feeling about everything. One of them certainly was starstruck by love. And the other could only hear the sound of her heart breaking into millions of pieces.
