Coffee Days (2)

Ding. The faint sound of the doorbell ringing alerted the household of a visitor. Eliza leapt from her spot on the couch, running her fingers through her hair, while glancing in a mirror. She shooed her sisters and brother down the hall, before answering the door.

"Alexander," she breathlessly said, while opening the door. The beaming sophomore in front of her nodded. Arms filled with books and scattered papers, he certainly looked prepared for a study session.

Despite being slightly flustered, Eliza brought the boy into the house behind her. She heard him clear his throat anxiously. "Wow."

He had never seen such an open, big house before. It was definitely bigger than his, with its ceiling to floor windows, glamorous staircase, and pictures upon pictures along the walls surrounding them.

Unable to say anything, Eliza watched him circle on his heels, gazing at every inch of the foyer. He seemed completely mesmerized by the detail and size. It was times like that when Eliza remembered how fortunate she was.

She shyly began heading towards the staircase, leading Alexander up to their claimed study spot. Once they reached the second level, she practically dragged him to her room. Alexander froze in the doorway, a little surprised.

Walls painted a dusky blue color, bed nestled in the corner, her room wasn't what he had been imagining. It somewhat resembled his own room, besides the girly touches. Clearing his throat again, Alexander followed her across the room to the bed, where they both set their things down.

Recognizing the uneasy look on his face, Eliza began to say, "If you're more comfortable on the floor, we can-" He abruptly shook his head.

"No, I'm alright." It wasn't everyday he found himself sitting on top of another girl's bed, but he wasn't uncomfortable with it. After a few weeks of texting and meeting up with Eliza, he knew her well enough to make the gesture alright for the both of them.

Alexander immediately began conversation about school, eager to being studying. "Do you have the chemistry notes? I can't believe he's assigning our final earlier!" Making a disgusted noise, he searched through his various papers that were a cluttered mess.

Eliza pulled out her neatly arranged envelope, with different tabs for each subject. Her fingers flipped through until the chemistry tab, where she selected the notes. Handing them to him, she replied, "I know! We already have the history and language one on that day. But we certainly saw it coming."

"Hmm." Alexander flipped through the notes, concentrating hard on the writing. He clicked the tip of a pen several times. After copying down the majority of what he needed, he handed the notes back. Just as he began to pull something else out of folder, the door to the room swung open.

"I didn't know you were having boys over, sister!" The door pushed aside all the way to show Angelica leaned against the frame. She smacked a piece of bubblegum in her mouth, letting a smirk cover her lips.

Eliza rolled her eyes playfully. "Well, I didn't know you were going to care." She covered her face with a textbook, acting like she was searching for some answer. The sound of popping gum neared closer to the bed.

"Ah, we meet again, Alexander." Both of them shook hands. Angelica bit the corner of her lip, sneaking a glance at her humiliated sister. "I'm guessing you guys are studying?" She let the last word draw out longer on her tongue.

Eliza groaned loudly behind the textbook. Of course her sister had to get involved. And of course she just had to embarrass her in front of the boy she liked. "Sis, please."

Alexander chuckled, sensing her uneasiness at the older sibling being present. "You wouldn't know what happens behind closed doors, now would you, Angelica?" For a second, the room got deadly quiet.

Angelica chewed her gum harder. She wouldn't know, that was for sure. She had been too slow to be the one behind closed doors with Alexander. Instead her little sister grabbed his attention.

And she couldn't help regretting that decision to let them get to know each other.

"Certainly," she dryly replied. Before she exited the room, over her shoulder, she snuck a glance at the two of them. Her heart crumbled at the sight of Alexander pulling the book down from Eliza's face. She pushed herself around the doorway and slammed the door.

"I wish sisters didn't exist sometimes," Eliza muttered under her breath. She realized it had come out louder than expected, so she blushed brightly. Across from her, Alexander chuckled.

"At least you have siblings, I don't have anyone to go to for advice or comfort. Not anymore, that is." Shifting through papers, he avoided her eyes. The silence became unbearable for the both of them. He flipped a page, feeling her eyes boring into his head.

"Well, I'm here for you. Through triumphs, downfalls, whatever it is, I will stand by you, Alexander. You're my friend and I can't afford to lose you." Eliza reached out and placed her hand on his. She felt a lightning bolt of energy rush through her veins. To cut off the feeling, she pressed her hand tighter against his.

"No one cares about me that much. Trust me, you don't need to try to-"

"I'm not playing around. I truly care for you, even if you don't believe it." She took her hand from his, beginning to sort through some of his messy history notes. Just as she picked up the chapter about the French Revolution, a pair of lips brushed against hers.

A startled whimper came from her lips, right before she realized the situation. Alexander had his lips on hers and he wasn't backing down. Eliza didn't know what her mouth was doing, or her hips, but she managed to get used to it. Out of all the things she had been imagining they'd do that day, this wasn't one of those things.

The world around them blurred together and the details became unimportant. At any second one of the siblings or parents could walk in on them. But that didn't bother either of them much, for they continued to crush notes and textbooks as their lips refused to let go.
