Ask Of You

Out of the many things her nights should be occupied with, Theodosia was sure climbing to some secluded roof wasn't one of them. Her hands felt numb from the winter breezes, with their stinging flakes of white. It took her one more boost of energy to lift herself up onto the roof. Breathlessly, she glanced around for the person waiting to meet her.
"Philip!" In the distance, her childhood friend stood, his back turned to her. The second her singsong voice echoed around the place, he turned himself around to face her. His eyes filled with a glow as he walked forward towards her shivering figure.
He already knows what she has come about at such hours in the night. Her father. Their parents were constantly in a battle of politics and life, driving the children farther from each other. That was a problem, as they adored one another deeply, and couldn't stand to be apart.
Theodosia pushed a curl behind her ear, letting out an unsteady breath. "I can't hide secrets from him anymore. H-he's suspicious and becoming terribly caught up in his work. I'm worried he'll ruin himself because of me an-"
"I'm here, nothing can harm you. Your father isn't anywhere nearby. We're alone." He shushed her, nodding his head. It was a reminder for her to take a breath. A rustle in the distance made both of them flinch, stepping closer, and looking around.
Except they were wrong. Philip hadn't looked deep enough into the shadows of the pillars surrounding them, to see a wide eyed Aaron Burr gazing at his daughter and her supposed love interest. He shrunk farther back at the boy's words, making sure to conceal himself.
Theodosia slipped her hands into the man's across from hers. He wasn't the little boy she once knew. A full eighteen years of age, Philip was the spitting image of his father. And she had managed to fall in love with him.
She didn't want to think about her father. All of a sudden, all she truly wanted was for someone to love her. "Say you'll love me, Philip. You need me with you now and always. That's all I ask of you." Her voice was quivering as she spoke. To have his validation of love would be the one thing to keep her going.
"You know I love you and will always need you, Theo." He pressed a hand to her cheek, and she leaned her cheek into it. Closing her eyes, she imagined a faint summer breeze keeping them tied close together.
Aaron craned his neck from behind the pillar, holding onto the edge, slightly struck by his daughter's actions and words. How could she possibly feel so safe with him? He cringed as the snow beneath his feet crunched loudly.
She heard the sound. Theodosia tightened her grip on his hands, gasping, "Philip!" She hadn't ever felt more panicked in her life. Someone could just be in the distant shadows, listening to their every word. If they were discovered together, there would be no future at all.
Even the eighteen year old flinched at the sound of snow being crushed. It couldn't have been caused by just the wind. In the back of his mind, he knew something wasn't right. But he didn't let it bother him long enough to comfort his darling Theodosia.
"You're safe, no one else is here. All those fears of your father and life below is far, far away, remember?" He watched as a single tear tricked down the corner of her face. Wiping it away with his thumb, Philip shushed her, pulling her across the rooftop with one hand.
Flakes of white continued to curl into her hair as they walked closer to the glass like ceiling of the building. The light from within warmed both of their hearts just a little bit, almost as a promise of something good to happen along their road of worry.
Philip noticed the distracted, distant look cover his love's face, her eyes widening and filling with brightness. Holding her hand tightly in his, he pulled her around and into the embrace of his arms. Back pressed against his chest, Theodosia opened her mouth to say something.
She didn't get a chance, for Philip let his own heart do the talking.
"If you wish for freedom from all your troubles, then allow me to share one love, one lifetime with you. Your father doesn't need to know of us. I love you, and I know you feel the same for me, so why should we wait for a blessing that will never come?" Tears clouded over the boy's eyes, as he brushed his fingers through her snow dotted curls.
He couldn't afford to see the one person he loved swept away from him just because of her father's disgust for his own family. All his life he had heard the name Burr and how he was never to even associate with such a family.
But yet so many years later, the only person he had on his mind was Theodosia Burr. She was the most charming woman he'd ever encountered, and despite family rivalries, wouldn't let her go.
Even she was frightened of her father at times, so his place beside her was just as important as any other man's to his significant other.
"Anywhere you go, please let me go with you, by your side." He was becoming desperate for some sign of her loyal feelings for him, just as much as he felt for her. If they were going to be together in such a secretive way, hidden from both their parents, he wanted to know exactly how much she was willing to risk.
"Theodosia, that's all I ask of you."
She gently released herself from his arms, twisting around to face him. "You ask for me to share one whole lifetime with you, Philip. How I could possibly refuse such an offer?" She lifted her cloak up higher on her shoulders, shivering and leaning into his arms again.
Only this time Philip decided to kiss her in return. Lips brushing against hers, he gripped her waist and made sure she was right beside him. Theodosia didn't protest, although she was surprised at first. Hands intwined in his curly hair, she couldn't have asked for anything better to happen.
From behind the pillar, Aaron shut his eyes. It wasn't out of distaste, but for his breaking heart. The dear child he once held hands with, when they visited her mother's grave, was now a woman who had fallen in love with some foolish boy. How badly he wanted to run over and take her home, to shield her from the world of love and fears.
Meanwhile, as he scolded himself, the kiss across the roof became more passionate. Philip pressed even more against her, between every kiss, finally using his strength to spin her in the air. For a few seconds, Theodosia felt like an angel soaring above the world below her.
When she was placed back on her feet, he placed another eager kiss on her. Theodosia's arm drifted along the outline of his jacket and then to the back of his neck. Beaming enough to make her jaw ache, she felt her cloak fall down from her shoulders.
Philip caught the fabric in his hands, chuckling softly, and placing it back on her bare shoulders. She quietly thanked him, biting the edge of her lip. A whisper left her lips, "Love me, that's all I ask of you." Her eyes fixated a secretive, yet lustful gaze on him.
Neither of them said a word more, for their lips touched again. And neither of them even heard the sound of someone in the distance stifling sobs as he turned his back on the young couple.
