Why Maria said that, is more than clear. I also mentioned it a few theories back.

Peggy is the problem. Why does she say that? Did she love him? Well, I've figured it out. In real life, Peggy and Alexander were friends. Maybe not the closest friends ever, but still. Peggy loved him, but just as a friend.
