The New Change

Hey so I just wanted to let y'all know that I edited the last few chapters and made some changes (which is why I haven't come up with a new chapter yet) so if anyone who was reading before happens to still be reading then just know that I changed a lot (maybe not a lot but still).

Anyways, enjoy ✨
——————————

"Attention all students, may you please pause all conversation and bring your eyes to the front. I have an important announcement to make." said Headmistress McGonagall.

The Great Hall fell silent.

"You may be wondering why I asked all of you to attend to the Great Hall as early as you could."

("Wait, we were supposed to be here early?" whispered Harry.

"Yes, weren't you paying attention yesterday?" answered Hermione.

"Honestly, no.")

"I have a good reason for this, I assure you. As you may have noticed, I only asked for a certain group of people to arrive for this announcement. The reason for this is that I and the staff have decided to make a few changes around here. These changes aren't up for debate and if anyone has any complaints then you must talk amongst yourselves and deal with it on your own." She said, looking around the room and choosing to glance at certain people. Harry could've sworn that at one point during her speech, she had given him a pointed look.

At her words, multiple students started talking. What on earth was the Headmistress talking about? Change? Was there really a change that needed to be done?

"I hope they get rid of potions class." muttered Ron through a mouthful of chicken.

"Oh don't be ridiculous, Ronald. There's no way they would get rid of such an essential class." said Hermione.

"A man can dream." he sighed.

"It has come to my attention that Hogwarts isn't the most friendliest of schools. Allow me to elaborate, every student here belongs to a house, yes? There are four houses, Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. In these houses are people who you may talk to and get to know. You're surrounded by people who share the same beliefs as you. I believe that this is nice, however, as the years go on I noticed that very rarely do people in these four houses come together and converse with others not so similar to them. Not a single year goes by without any fights happening between two houses because one believed they were better than the other. This school has built its groups around pure stereotypes and no one bothers to just look past that and get to know the actual human beings who just happened to get sorted into a title. This is why I plan to get rid of the Hogwarts houses."

That's when all hell broke loose.

Students from every table had begun yelling at how ridiculous that was and how McGonagall couldn't possibly be thinking of doing that. Students were freaking out. Even Ron had almost choked on his food when he heard what the Headmistress had said. The ones that were especially loud were the Slytherins and Gryffindors who had made it a point to voice their displeasure for all to hear.

All at once though, everyone quieted down as they heard a booming voice yell, "SILENCE!"

McGonagall waited until everyone was sitting back in their seats. She shook her head disappointingly and gave a disapproving look to the entire hall.

"You did not let me finish. Really, there's no need to get all riled up and act like a bunch of toddlers throwing a tantrum." said McGonagall.

Multiple students seemed visibly upset about her insult, though they did not speak out loud about it.

"Now listen, I just like you belong to my very own Hogwarts house. As you can recall, I was head of Gryffindor house for many years before becoming headmistress. I myself cannot imagine a Hogwarts experience without the pride of belonging to a house of people that I grew up with. When I say that I'm getting rid of the Hogwarts houses, I mean that I'm getting rid of the prejudices and superiority that seem to come along with the system. A system that certain students seemed to have followed till the end of time."

Alright, Harry could definitely tell that she was looking directly at him. When her eyes gazed over at another student, Harry's eyes followed to see what she was looking at.

Malfoy.

"I will not be getting rid of the sorting hat or the sorting ceremony, as I feel that that is a big part of the Hogwarts experience. However, I will be changing how certain things work. Such as dorms, classes, lunch tables, and more. We'll be starting out this change with the older students, seeing as you guys are the ones who have experienced most of what I explained before." said McGonagall, taking out her wand.

With one flick of the magical stick, stacks of envelopes started shooting out from the stack she had behind her. Each envelope made its way to the students at every table, sliding in front of them in an instant.

"Every single one of you will be assigned a dorm with certain people. You'll notice that most of your classes have been set so that you share them with those people. There's other things as well that I have not mentioned, however, all of that will be in the envelopes that I have given you. That is all, you may now continue on with your day. Good luck." she smiled and went back to her seat at the teacher's table.

Everyone went back to their small groups and started talking. A lot. Most likely about the announcement McGonagall had just made. All around the room people were looking at their envelopes with both curiosity and a weird amount of fear.

Even Hermione looked at the envelope with a strange look. Almost as if she couldn't actually understand what was going to be happening at Hogwarts.

Ron had ripped the envelope open as soon as he got it. He now sported an odd mixture of a pale and red face as he read the letter.

Harry hadn't even noticed the envelope yet, he was far too busy eyeing a certain blonde Slytherin.

"This is bloody ridiculous! Have you guys read this yet?" asked Ron.

Hermione shook her head and finally opened the envelope revealing a letter decorated in red paper and golden writing.

"That's an awfully Gryffindor decorated letter."

"It's a trick, I promise you. Just look at the other tables! Their letters are all decorated in their house colors. I swear it's meant to trick you into thinking it's good, then BAM, it hits you with horrible news." said Ron, waving around his letter dramatically.

"Oh honestly, Ronald. It can't be that bad."

"But it is! Just read it, you'll see."

Hermione cleared her throat and proceeded to read the letter out loud.

"Dear students of Hogwarts,

it has come to my attention that this school may need to make some changes. For that to happen, I need to start this change in those who have been here the longest." read Hermione.

"Well that's not bad so far, it really just says what she told us before."

"You didn't read far enough, 'Mione!"

Hermione rolled her eyes and continued.

"Down below you will see a list of people that you'll now be sharing a dorm with. By this time, all of your items should also be moved into said dorm (directions down below) so it will be prepared for your arrival. I have also given each of you a schedule that should be similar to the schedule of those that you share a dorm with. Classes will no longer be separated by houses and will instead be put together with groups of people who share dorms. House points will still work the same, however, if you're working with someone in your dorm at the moment that you get the points, your dormmate will receive a few points as well. You will be given certain assignments and activities to do with your group, and because all of you are now young adults, I trust you to be responsible with these activities. You can think of these activities as fun mini school trips (that are worth a grade). Another thing that comes along with this is that you will be given bracelets so that we may keep track of where you go. Do realize that this means that we'll be able to tell if you're lying about completing an activity or assignment. Please do not take these bracelets off as they are for your safety. You'll find the bracelet in the envelope. If you happen to need help then simply tap the bracelet with your wand and we will receive a message. You will be doing your N.E.W.T.S this year so please do be responsible with that as well. That is all now.

Sincerely,

Headmistress Minerva McGonagall."

"What did I tell you? Horrible!" said Ron.

"I can see why you don't like it, however I don't think it's all that bad. It's just a few changes and honestly I think it's a good idea what McGonagall is doing." said Hermione, pulling out a red and gold bracelet from the envelope and slipping it on her wrist.

"I bet you haven't even looked at who you have to share a room with. I certainly have. Oh and it's the worst, Hermione, it's absolutely terrible." said Ron.

"It can't be that bad."

Ron gasped.

"Can't be that bad? Can't be that ba- just look right here. Who's name does it say right at the top? Just read it out loud." said Ron, aggressively pointing to an area near the bottom and covering all that was below it.

Hermione looked at what Ron was pointing at and chuckled. "Harry Potter," she read.

Harry's head popped up.

"Yeah?" he asked.

Ron pulled the paper away from Hermione.

"Oh shoot, sorry, my bad." said Ron, moving his hand down again and shoving the paper in Hermione's face.

"Blaise Zabini,"

"That's the one! See what I told you? It's absolutely terrible." said Ron.

"Well alright, but I don't think that's absolutely terrible like you say it is. Sure we haven't had great experiences with that trio, but out of all three of them Blaise is the one that we haven't actually seen much of. Maybe he won't actually be that bad." said Hermione, obviously trying to make this situation seem better than it is.

Ron scoffed at this, looking at Harry and giving him a look as if to say that he wanted him to back him up. Not that Harry could back him up, seeing as he hadn't the slightest clue of what conversation was going on right now.

Ron paid Harry's silence no mind and went back to Hermione.

"Blaise Zabini is an outright git and you know that. Just because he hasn't said anything to you guys doesn't mean he hasn't said anything to me. He called me a shorty one time! Did you know that? I'm not even short! He's just slightly taller than me and he has the audacity to call me short. How's that fair? It doesn't even make sense for me. It makes more sense for Harry than it does for me! Do you understand how ridiculous that is? Out of the two of us, he went for the tall ginger kid who's far more better looking." said Ron, crossing his arms and huffing.

Harry and Hermione looked at Ron with slight shock. He had never talked about having any interactions with Zabini. None of them had actually truly had any real sort of conversation or squabble with the guy. If they ever did, chances are that it was always far too insignificant to actually bring up.

"I'm sure you can survive being called short for some time." said Hermione, finally taking a bite out of her breakfast.

"But Hermione," started Ron, dragging out the last 'E' in Hermione's name. Ron flung himself against Hermione, draping his arm lazily against her shoulders, bringing her down slightly under his weight. She nearly choked on her food from the surprise that came from the sudden attack of his hug (if it could be called a hug).

"He gets on my nerves." said Ron.

"Are you sure there's no other real reason for why you're so reluctant to share a dorm with him?" asked Hermione, shoving Ron off of her with a smile.

Ron blushed. He looked away.

"I guess not." he muttered.

Hermione smiled brightly.

"Good,"

Harry finally picked up the envelope that was sitting in front of him. He ripped it open, the bracelet catching his eye immediately. He looked at it for a few seconds then slipped it on with no questions. He picked up the letter.

"What's this?" he asked.

Hermione looked at him, unlike Ron who just continued looking to the side, whispering to himself under his breath.

"Oh, it's a letter addressing some changes that'll be happening at Hogwarts. You'll find at the bottom a list of new people you'll be sharing a dorm with. Ron and Zabini are two of the people on the list, as I'm sure you've figured out from his whining." said Hermione.

Ron's head snapped over.

"I wasn't whining!" said Ron.

"Oh really, how would you summarize the conversation we just had?" asked Hermione.

"I'd summarize it as me being perfectly reasonable."

This continued on as Harry looked over the letter.

Alright so, new dorm, house points, activities,
bracelets. Ah! There it is! The list really is at the bottom. Let's see, there's Ron Weasley,— already knew that— Blaise Zabini,— I knew that too — Jules Bardot,— I think they're a Hufflepuff, I've actually talked to them once before — then there's Catherine Swivel — I'm not sure but I think she's a Ravenclaw.

Alright, there's one more.

His eyes widened.

"Draco Malfoy?" he read.

Ron looked over.

"I- what?" asked Ron.

"We're sharing a dorm with Draco Malfoy."

"Ex-fucking-scuse me?"
