35. NEVER-ENDING CYCLE
Five hastily lifted the lid of the dumpster and pulled out a bulky briefcase. It was the same exact one the Handler had used when she sent me back in time.
Footsteps approached from behind the two of it. "Hey," Luther said, out of breath. "Where is everyone?"
We all glanced around the empty alleyway. "You're the first," Five remarked. He seemed unsurprised yet so disappointed in his other siblings.
"Hey! Hey!" Klaus shouted from the sidewalk. He ran down the all with open arms and a wide grin. "We made it!"
"What do you mean, 'we'?" Five asked him.
Klaus's body suddenly contorted in strange ways. He was shaking violently as he held onto himself. "Get out!" He declared. It was almost like he was having some kind of fight with himself. Suddenly, he turned around and held his stomach as he threw up. White chunks flew out onto the ground, making me cringe and turn away in disgust.
"I can't believe it," Luther breathed. "I mean, you're here!"
"We've got eight minutes left," Five stated.
Klaus was sprawled out on the ground now as he whimpered to himself, "I just had the strangest dream."
"Where are the others?" Five exclaimed. His patience was dwindling.
Luther slammed his fist down on the dumpster in anger. "We've got a minute left!"
"What's going on, guys?" Klaus whispered. His voice was hoarse. "Are we going somewhere?"
Five dropped the suitcase down the ground and began pacing. "It was a simple task," he remarked. "It was a simple task! All we had to do was be here! Didn't have to fight a giant sea monster, no! An army of mutants? NEIN!"
"I can't believe this," Luther huffed.
"It was handed to us on a silver platter!" Five exclaimed. His threw his hands up in the air in frustration.
I grabbed onto Five's shoulders and stopped his pacing. "Five, listen, I know you're angry, but what else did you expect?"
Five's eyes went wide. "Lexa, you're exactly right!" I nodded in agreement and dropped my hands from his shoulders, only for him to turn around and snap completely. "I SHOULDN'T HAVE EXPECTED ANYTHING FROM MY IDIOT SIBLINGS!"
My small smile instantly dropped and I face palmed. "That's not what I meant-"
"Could you two just moan a little softer?" Klaus pleaded. He sat up with his eyes closed. "My head is killing me!"
Five swaggered over to his brother and began scolding him, "Listen to me, you useless puke bag! We just blew our chance to save the world!" The briefcase on the ground began to click as it charged up. "Goddamn it!" Five scoffed. He picked up the case and tossed it into the air, where it teleported itself into the future. "We were that close. That close."
"Well, now what?" Luther spoke up.
Five started pacing again. "Now nothing, Luther, alright?" He exclaimed. "Make your peace with God!"
"What?" Luther asked cluelessly. "What about Allison and Vanya?"
"Screw them both," Five remarked. "They should have been here."
Klaus pushed himself off the ground. "What about Diego?" He groaned. "He's quite the responsible young man, no?"
Five grunted and kicked a box over. I shook my head and sighed. This was a complete disaster. Probably one of the Hargreeves finest moments to be exact.
"Something must've happened to them," Luther tried reasoning with Five. That was the last thing you wanted to do with him, while he was irritated though.
"Screw Diego, alright?" Five exclaimed. "Screw everybody! I was better off on my own in the apocalypse." My face dropped almost immediately as I turned my head to look at him in disbelief.
"Five, come on," Luther sighed.
"You know what, Luther? It's every sibling for himself now!" Five declared. "How 'bout that?" He turned towards me now and held out his hand. I crossed my arms over my chest and shot him a look. "Are you coming?"
My lips pursed as I stared him down. "No I don't think I am," I stated. "Since, apparently, you'd be better off on your own."
Five paused. His annoyed face turned to an apologetic one. "Lexa," he sighed, shaking his head. "I didn't mean it like that."
"Then, how'd you mean it?" I questioned him. Five was about to answer but I held my hand up before he could speak. "You know what? Why don't you just call me when you figure it out? I just know how much you like being alone!" Five narrowed his eyes at me and threw his hands up in the air as he spun around and walked away. As much as I hated the idea of him turning his back on me, I was still hurt that he had said that.
"Did Five just.. get meaner?" Klaus cried out.
Luther shook his head. "Alexa, Klaus, go check on Allison, okay?" He glanced towards the two of us. "Make sure she's okay. Find the others and we'll meet back here. I'll handle Five"
"Good luck with him," I remarked. Luther feigned his laughter and just smiled as he went back inside after his brother.
Klaus stood up with shaky legs and then turned around to point at his disgusting throw-up. "And you!" He stated. "You have had your possession privileges.. revoked!"
"Who are you talking to?" I questioned Klaus. This day was a whirlpool of emotions. I was becoming mentally exhausted already.
"Just a pesky ghost," he replied in aggravation. I followed after him as he began to walk back out of the alleyway, screaming behind him sporadically. "Just stay out of me! Back off!"
This day was a whirlpool of emotions. I was becoming mentally exhausted already.
★・・・★・・・★
Klaus knocked on the door quickly. The two of us waited outside when we saw a man slide the curtain in front of the window over slightly. His dark eyes noticed Klaus and he unlocked the door and opened it. "Hey, Ray-Ray," Klaus greeted the man. "I'm so sorry it's late, but, uh-"
"Klaus," Ray interrupted. "Now is not a good time."
"Oh, I'm sorry," Klaus spoke quietly.
My brows furrowed. "Is everything okay?" I asked the man. He sent me a confused look, so I pointed my finger towards him. "There's blood on your shirt."
Suddenly, Allison stepped into our line of sight. "Allison! Hey!" Klaus exclaimed. He squeezed past Ray and stepped into the house. "I was so worried about you. Thank God you're okay."
I sent Ray an apologetic smile as I walked inside his house as well. He shut the door behind me. "Please don't tell me you're Allison's sister," he questioned me.
"Sister?" I repeated. "No, I'm Alexa.. Her second cousin." Ray's eyes went wide so I put my hands up in the air. "Kidding," I said with a lopsided smile. The man breathed a sigh of relief.
"What's the matter?" Klaus asked Allison as he pulled away from their hug. She sent me a small smile as a greeting, but I could tell that something was wrong. "You guys have been wrastling in here or something?" Allison waved her arm to the side, revealing one of the Swede brothers, who was dead on her couch. His left eye was bleeding out of a stab wound. "Oh, I see," Klaus said simply. "It's gonna be one of those kinda nights, huh?"
"We just can't catch a break, can we?" I said with a sigh.
Klaus nodded in agreement as he began to roll up his sleeves. "So are we burning or burying?"
"We'll figure it out later," Allison said. "Let's just focus on cleaning up this mess for now."
The three of us nodded simultaneously and got to work. Allison had me retrieve an old rug from another room in her house, while her and Klaus placed the Swede on it. Once we wrapped him up, Allison and Ray worked on tying a rope around the Swede so he was secure within the rug.
"God," Allison breathed. "Why are people so much heavier when they're dead?"
"You got a lot of practice at this?" Ray asked in disbelief. Allison feigned a response and just sent him an irritated expression.
Klaus answered instead with a soft chuckle, "Yeah." He glanced beside him on the couch and began speaking to no one in particular again. "It was like sex with one of the lesser Baldwins. I mean, you can feel him clattering around in there, but do you really care?" Allison and I both looked at each other before staring at Klaus. "Why? What was it like driving all this hot business?" I just assumed he was talking to some ghost friend of his. Maybe Ben..
"Okay," Ray sighed. "One.. two.. three." Allison, Ray, and I began to lift the dead body off of the floor, when out of nowhere, a flash of blue light flashed in the room. A loud zapping noise echoed in the house, startling the three of us into dropping the body back down to the floor again.
Diego and another man were in the room now. I noticed that the short man beside him was holding one of those time traveling briefcases.
"Oh, good!" Diego exclaimed. "Alright, you're all here. We gotta go!"
"Diego!" Allison shouted. "JESUS!"
The short man with the glasses chuckled. "Number Two, Three, and Four! We almost have an Umbrella straight flush here." The man met my eyes and gasped. "Oh, and the Glitch! It's so nice to meet you in person."
I rolled my eyes. "Thanks," I remarked.
"Ray, this is my other brother, Diego," Allison introduced him.
Diego walked over to Ray. "Hey, man. Sorry to crash in here like this." The two shook hands quickly.
"Hey, who is this guy?" Klaus spoke up, pointing towards the short man with glasses.
"Herb," Diego stated. Herb smiled a toothy grin as he waved to each of us. "He worked with Five and the Commission."
"The Commission?" Klaus repeated.
"I'm really starting to despise that damn place," I huffed.
Herb chuckled. "You and me both, sister!" He directed his attention back to Klaus. "We monitor and maintain the time-space continuum."
"Okay," Klaus said.
"No, for real. I was just there. It's awesome," Diego added. His face changed to an expression of seriousness. "Okay, I got to look at the timeline. I know what causes doomsday.. It's Vanya."
Allison's face dropped almost instantly. "Wait, what?"
"How?" Klaus asked as he stood up from the couch and joined Allison and me in front of Diego.
"She's gonna blow up the federal building at Dealey Plaza just as the president's passing through in less than one hour," Diego explained. He checked his watch. "We gotta find her and stop her, now."
"Wait, Vanya kills the president?" Allison asked in confusion.
"No, no, no," Diego spoke quickly. "See, the explosion causes the motorcade to drive off. Kennedy lives. Everybody thinks Russia's behind it, including the president. He strikes back, they strike back. Before you know it, it's raining nukes."
"Jesus christ," I sighed.
"Holy shit!" Klaus added.
"Ray?" Allison said. We all glanced to him and saw that he was starting to freak out. "Ray, baby, are you okay?" Allison grabbed his hands and held him as he began to pant.
"No, no, I'm not okay," Ray's voice wavered. "First of all, this son of a bitch beams into our living room with yet another one of your brothers, and he's talking about stopping one of your sisters from blowing up some buildings. I got a dead man wrapped up in my best rest, and her-." Ray pointed to me now. "Babe, I don't even know how she's connected to any of this when she's just a damn kid!"
"Well, I'm involved with one of their other siblings, Five, but I ditched him awhile ago because he somehow managed to get 'meaner' after you all failed to show up in the alley, which now that I'm thinking about it, I kind of feel bad for yelling at him. I mean, Five's just under a lot of stress right now and I probably just made it a lot worse by leaving him alone even though that's what he said he wanted. It's a long, complicated story," I ranted. I paused for a moment to take a breath because I had been talking so fast. "Oh, and I've got powers too—intangibility to be more specific—only they're from human experiments not birth like the rest of the Hargreeves family." Ray's eyes bulged out of his head now. "Too much?" I asked Diego and Klaus. The two men just nodded. For some reason, I always catch myself going into long rants or sharing too much information at the wrong times.
"Okay, Raymond," Allison cooed. She was trying to calm her husband down as he was beginning to have a panic attack.
"We can have that shampooed," Herb spoke up. "The rug, that is," he clarified. He turned around and sent Klaus, Diego, and I a sheepish smile. "We also provide body removal services." My eyebrows furrowed as I just shook my head in confusion. Why would anyone want that?
After Allison and Ray had said their quiet conversation in the next room over, they kissed and said their final goodbyes to each other. Allison tore her tear-filled eyes away from her husband and made her way out of the house with the rest of us. I doubt the two of them would ever see the other again.
