31. TWISTIN' THE NIGHT AWAY

After getting tacos, the four of us brought them back to eat at Allison's hair salon. It was a rather cute place. The walls had orange flowers and the curtains were made out of a sheer yellow material that allowed for the sunlight from outside to pour in. Soft music from a small, teal radio played old, upbeat tunes from a random station as I spun in one of the chairs used for getting a haircut. I was beginning to get dizzy from all of the commotion, so I dropped my feet onto the ground to stop the movement.

Allison growled in annoyance as she picked up a bottle of alcohol and turned to face Vanya, Klaus, and me. "The nerve of that man," she ranted. "I mean, one thing goes wrong, and he's on a warpath. I mean, doesn't know who I am? No, no. No, Ray, you know exactly who I am. You just can't handle it. I'm protecting him!"

Vanya made finger guns and shot them at the lined up bottles of hair treatment in front of her. "Pew, pew!"

Allison slapped her comb on top of Klaus's head. It was safe to say that she was a bit tipsy. "Ow," Klaus exclaimed. "From what?"

"The end of the world, for one," Allison replied as if it were obvious.

"Is the world really gonna end in six days?" Vanya asked.

Everyone paused for a moment. "Well, it didn't last time," Allison answered. "We did everything Five could think of to stop it."

Klaus picked his feet up off of the counter and turned around to face us. "Hey, wouldn't it be weird if Five grew up all hot?" He asked. His eyes met mine and I quickly glanced away as I sank down in my chair. "Come on, Alexa. Wouldn't that be weird?"

"What?" Vanya asked.

"Oh, ew," Allison remarked. She turned around to face Klaus who was now standing in the center of the room without shoes on. Come to think of it, I'm not entirely sure if I've ever seen him wear shoes. Does Klaus even own a pair?

"Oh, ew! Eww," Klaus mocked Allison. "Please, Miss 'Luther was my lover'." He placed his hand over his heart and pouted, making me laugh.

"We have never even kissed!" Allison defended herself.

"Yeah, but you guys were making little sick moon-dog eyes at each other all through puberty and breakfasts and all that," Klaus reasoned with her.

Vanya turned around in her chair. "Aren't we all brothers and sisters, or..?" She trailed off in confusion. Suddenly, I felt really uncomfortable listening to this conversation.

Allison sighed, "Well, technically-"

"Technically, if you have to use the word 'technically,' you're already in trouble," Klaus interrupted. He began to giggle as he looked to Vanya and I for approval.

"Okay, can we focus?" Allison said. "I mean, clearly we're not saving the world tonight, but maybe, maybe, we could at least try to save my marriage."

"Like in those movies!" I spoke up. Everyone shot me a confused glance. "You know, the ones where half of it is funny and the other half is romantic?"

"A rom-com," Klaus clarified. "You're talking about a rom-com."

"Yes, that's the one," I said.

Klaus shook his head. "No! No, because that's like asking a nun how to hump someone's leg."

I cringed and shook my head. "I don't think that's what it's like at all."

"I mean, who in this room knows shit about relationships?" Klaus exclaimed. I tilted my head to the side slightly as I thought about that question in regards to myself. "This one?" Klaus pointed to Vanya. "In secret love with some farm Frau."

"Her name's Sissy," Vanya spoke up.

"Which is an improvement on her previous love interest," Klaus said. Allison shook her head with widened eyes, but Klaus didn't catch on. "The serial killer."

"What?" Vanya exclaimed. She sat up a bit in her chair.

"We'll talk about it later," Allison whispered.

"I mean, it could've been worse," I tried reasoning with Klaus.

He sent me a look and shrugged. "Could it have been though? Could it really have been worse?"

"Probably not," I admitted.

"Meanwhile, I'm carrying a torch for a solider I haven't technically met yet," Klaus said with glassy eyes. He must have been talking about the man he met during the Vietnam war, Dave. "And, Luther is in love with his sister," Klaus exclaimed.

"Okay, again, we are not biological," Allison interrupted.

"Wait, what about Alexa and Five?" Vanya asked. "I can't be the only one who has noticed something going on between them." I nodded in agreement and glanced back at Klaus.

"What about them?" Klaus asked.

My eyebrows furrowed as I said, "We've been together since the last apocalypse. That's gotta count, right?"

Klaus's eyes went wide. "Seriously?" He exclaimed. "None of you tell me anything in this family!"

"Klaus, we all watched them kiss before we went back in time," Allison pointed out. I felt my face get hot again as I avoided their eyes.

"Huh.. I guess you're right," Klaus replied with a soft laugh. " I thought I was going through withdrawal symptoms and suddenly seeing things. So much for 'Five's favorite friend,' Alexa!"

I put my hands up. "In my defense, we were only friends at that specific time."

"Wait, how did you two even meet amongst all the chaos?" Allison asked, chuckling slightly in disbelief.

"We met at Griddy's," I answered. "I had just escaped the Order when Five walked in, along with a lot of timeline assassins, who were there to kill him."

Klaus put his hands over his heart. "How romantic! There's nothing like stabbing people to death on a first date. Blood must really bring young people together."

"What's the Order?" Vanya questioned me. She was a good-listener. I didn't think anyone would catch onto that.

"The Horror Order," I clarified. I debated on revealing my past to them, but I trusted the Hargreeves siblings especially with all that we had been through together. "It was a compound with scientists that performed human experiments and trained orphans into becoming killers."

"Alexa!" Klaus exclaimed. "You're an orphan?" I nodded my head slowly. "Awe, you poor thing!" He wobbled over to me and wrapped his arms around my shoulders. He reeked of alcohol and nature, probably from his cult.

"You must have gotten your powers through the human experiments then," Allison noted. She shook her head as her face contorted into an expression of confusion. "I thought human experiments were illegal."

"They are," I replied. She tilted her head, still not understanding how or why someone would do such a thing. "You guys will love this bit," I chuckled sardonically. "The Umbrella Academy was the inspiration behind the Order."

"Oh, great!" Klaus exclaimed. "Even when we're not trying, we manage to screw up someone else's life."

"It's not your fault," I said with a small smile. "I mean, there were some good things that came out of it. Like Five and meeting you guys."

Klaus winced at the mention of his brother. "Jeez, Alexa, what do you even see in him?" He asked. "Tell me, is it the anger issues or the amount of people he's killed?"

"Actually-"

I was about to answer, until Klaus cut me off. "Please, hold off on your explanation. I'm not sure I'm ready to hear about what you find 'attractive' about Number Five." I made a tight-lipped smile and nodded, sinking back into my chair. "Let's face it, the only thing the Umbrella Academy knows about love," Klaus paused to hold his flask in the air. "Is how to screw it up, with the shocking exception of Five because he somehow managed win Alexa's heart."

"Cheers," Allison and Vanya said simultaneously. Allison took a swig of the bottle of alcohol in her hands.

I could probably go for some liquor now that I'm thinking of it. "Got anymore of that?" I asked Allison, motioning towards the bottle in her hand.

She nodded as she stood up and walked over to me, shaking the bottle, so that I could see the alcohol in it. "Should I be giving this to you?" Allison asked even though she was already handing it over.

"In a normal world, probably not," I replied. I took a sip from the bottle. I could already feel a bit relieved from the alcohol. "But there's nothing normal about any of this."

"How do you guys deal with this?" Vanya asked us.

"What?" Allison said.

"I mean, all of it," Vanya sighed. "The time travel, seeing the dead, the end of the world, human experiments." She trailed off with her never ending list of things each of us go through.

"Well, I get really high," Klaus spoke up. He sat down on a chair as he waved a cigarette in the air. The smoke swirled and then disappeared.

"I pretend it never happened," I admitted. I took another swig from the bottle, nearly finishing it off. I was starting to feel a bit lighter. I could feel the weight on my shoulders being lifted off. My thoughts and problems were disappearing within my head.

"Allison lies to herself," Klaus added. She scrunched her face up in anger and kicked a stool at him. It rolled slowly across the floor. "And you suppress all of your emotions deep, deep down until you blow shit up."

Vanya hummed in response, "Yeah, I'd really like to no do that anymore."

"Well, you've got six days, missy," Klaus told her with a humorous smile.

"What the hell are we supposed to do with six days?" Allison asked. She stared at her reflection in the mirror.

"Party?" Klaus scoffed. "I don't know!"

Vanya sat up in her chair suddenly. She had a glimmer of hope and motivation in her eyes. "I'm gonna tell Sissy that I love her! I don't want any secrets."

"Yeah," Klaus said in agreement.

Allison turned around. "Yeah!"

My eyes glanced between the three siblings. "Is it my turn to say 'yeah' now?"

"Yeah," Allison replied.

"Okay then," I said with a nonchalant shrug. "Yeah."

"Vanya, you're right," Allison exclaimed. She stood up with a look of determination on her face. "Yes, 'cause, you know, if it's all gonna go tits-up, the least I could do is be honest with my husband."

I nodded my head in agreement as U stood up abruptly. "I wanna do something crazy and spontaneous too!" I declared. I don't know what it was but this sudden hope and realization within the three of them was starting to inspire me to do something with my life, but I wasn't exactly sure what yet. Nonetheless, I was really liking where this conversation was going.

"Oh, does this mean I have to face my cult?" Klaus interjected. "I just hate group breakups. It's why I stopped dating twins!" I sent Klaus a concerned look. "You don't wanna know." He was probably right but I still couldn't help the curiosity.

Vanya threw her hands up in the air. "This family's amazing!"

Klaus cackled, "Yeah, sure!"

"Okay, let's not get ahead of ourselves," Allison laughed.

"Come here, Vanya," Klaus said. Him and Allison had joined each other for a hug. "You too, Alexa. You're part of us now!"

Allison and Klaus both had toothy grins on their faces and wide, open arms. "Come on!" Allison exclaimed. "Get over here, you two!"

Vanya and I glanced at each other before smiling and walking over to Klaus and Allison, giving in to the hug.

"I love you guys," Klaus said. I had never felt so welcome and apart of something special in my whole life.

Suddenly, a new toon on the radio came on. Allison gasped and pulled part. "Oh, you guys! I love this song!" She ran over to the radio and turned the knob to higher up the volume.

The four of us began to dance around the room as we all listened to the music on the radio.

"Let me tell you about a place! Somewhere up a New York way!"

Allison grabbed my hands and started spinning my around the room. I laughed as the two of us swayed to the song together.

"Where the people are so gay! And they're twist in' the night away!"

I grabbed onto Vanya's shoulders as we all joined in on a Conga line, waltzing around the hair salon. When we broke apart, we all spun off in our own directions and danced to the tune.

Vanya, Klaus, Allison, and I grabbed onto each other again and began spinning in circles, while holding onto a rolling cart. The colors within the room began to blur within my vision. I wasn't sure if it was from all of the dancing and spinning or the alcohol that I had consumed. Regardless, the four of us continued on dancing to the beat of the song, laughing at each other and just enjoying the moment.

"They're twistin' the night away!"
