12. FOREVER GONE

Bree, Eleanor, Zara, and I walked back to our shared room in silence, partly because we were tired from training, but mostly because we didn't really have much to say to one another. Bree and I are still not talking, Zara and I have our differences, and Eleanor was just her usual, quiet self. To say that there was thick tension between the four of us was an understatement. Not to mention, the small, stuffy elevator we were all stood in didn't help ease the uncomfortable silence. The four of us were in a different corner of the small box. I played with the hem of my sweater sleeve as the cliche music played softly. I was really starting to hate the piano tunes that resumed during each elevator ride.

Finally, after what felt like hours, a bell rung and the elevator doors slid open. I quickly stepped out of the tiny box, which was starting to feel more like a trap. My footsteps halted abruptly when I heard a loud gasp from behind me. I immediately spun on my heel and saw Eleanor frozen in place, standing right outside of the elevator. Her eyes appeared to be rolled to the back of her head, showing only pure white. The girl's mouth was ajar as she shook slightly.

Zara and Bree were also stopped a few steps in front of me. They watched Eleanor in confusion and concern. "Eleanor?" Bree spoke unsurely. She took a timid step towards the small girl. Bree slowly began reaching out to grab onto her shoulder, but before she made contact with Eleanor's arm, the brunette's shaky breaths finally came to a halt. Eleanor's eyes rolled back into place and her body seemed to slouch and relax slightly. Bree jumped backwards in fear at the sudden movement.

Eleanor's eyes darted around the room suddenly before landing on me. I was slightly taken aback when she started making her way towards me. Eleanor grabbed hold of my shoulders. I glanced at her hands and then her eyes with a confused expression. "Alexa," Eleanor breathed.

"Are you okay?" I asked her carefully. Eleanor's breath hitched in her throat as she stared into my eyes. Her hands were a bit shaky as she held onto my shoulders.

"She's been watching you," Eleanor spoke. Her tone was soft, almost as if she was afraid that somebody nearby would hear.

My eyebrows furrowed. "What?"

"She's been watching you," Eleanor repeated, a bit louder. Her grip on my arms tightened as her eyes darkened with caution. I subtly tried to break free from her hold on me, but she wouldn't let go. I was starting to become nervous by how serious she was becoming. "She's been following you."

"Who's been following me?" I asked Eleanor. I didn't understand what she was talking about. I just assumed that she had just had a vision, but the last time I lived through this.. none of her were of me. This never happened before.

Eleanor didn't answer my question. Instead, she tightened her grip on my arms and started shaking me slightly. "You can't trust her!" Eleanor suddenly exclaimed, catching the attention of the other kids around us.

I took a quick step backwards, but Eleanor moved with me. I could feel myself becoming overwhelmed with nerves suddenly. "Let go of me," I tried to speak calmly. I could almost hear the subtle waver in my voice though.

"She's been watching you!" Eleanor exclaimed loudly. "She's been following you this whole time! No one will believe you, but you know that you're right!" Eleanor was walking forward and forcing me to backtrack into the wall behind us. I was cornered now. I felt everyone's eyes on either me or Eleanor as they listened to her screams. I didn't know who or what she was talking about.

"Eleanor, calm down," Bree said, suddenly by the brunette's side. She was about to place her hand on Eleanor's shoulder again, until Eleanor yelled at the top of her lungs, "DON'T TOUCH ME!"

Almost immediately, Eleanor jumped back and released my arms, but Bree had already grabbed hold of her shoulder now. Eleanor inhaled sharply as her eyes rolled to the back of her head again. Her whole body shook until the vision was finally finished playing out in her head. Eleanor dropped to her knees and gasped as if she were out of breath. Her eyes darted towards Bree now, who was stood beside me as we both watched our friend in a manic state of paranoia. "Don't leave!" She warned. "It's best if you just stay here!" Eleanor spoke quickly, as if whatever she saw might disappear within seconds if she didn't reveal part of someone's future.

"What are you talking about?" Bree asked. I could hear the concern in her voice. I frowned at the thought of the last time I saw her, specifically when we attempted to escape from this place. Although I may be altering the timeline now, it seemed that some things never change.

Zara walked over to the three of us. She made a mental note not to touch Eleanor, so she wouldn't trigger another one of her visions. "Let's just get back to our room," Zara said seriously. I wasn't surprised that she didn't care about Eleanor's wellness. She could really be stone cold sometimes. "I've had enough of you and your made-up fantasies," she spoke lowly to Eleanor. Her tone was harsh and judgmental.

Eleanor and Zara stared intensely at one another. I was surprised with Eleanor. Usually she crumbles under any pressure whatsoever, but she held her own against the Asian girl. My proudness for Eleanor faded shortly after a few moments though because a single tear fell from her left eye and slid down her cheek slowly. "Y-you don't believe me?" She asked. Each word she spoke dropped in volume.

"Of course I don't!" Zara said with a snide snickered. "You can't seriously expect me to believe anything that you're saying right now, when you can't even describe your own 'visions'."

Eleanor's face dropped even more than it had before. "I can prove it!" She exclaimed. Eleanor instantly reached out and attempted to grab Zara, but the Asian girl had keen reflexes and took a quick step back.

"What the hell are you doing?" Zara spat. She glared at Eleanor. "Are you crazy?"

The word seemed to trigger something inside Eleanor's mind. Her eyes went as wide as golf balls all of a sudden as her pink lips slowly twitched up into a toothy grin. Then, she laughed. Bree and I stood there in utter confusion, just watching the small girl fall into a fit of laughter. I couldn't understand what she could possibly find humorous,
especially with her outburst right not, but her laugh grew louder and more unsettling the longer it went on. Even Zara seemed taken aback by the strange action. If other kids weren't watching her before, they certainly are now that her voice is echoing down the halls.

"What are you laughing at?" Zara asked in a harsh tone. She could really be ignorant sometimes. I wasn't surprised by her meanness, in fact I was very much used to it, but I just found it upsetting that she had no compassion for anyone. The last time I was living through this, the only person she seemed to care about was Asher, but it seemed odd to me because I hadn't even seen them speak yet. Maybe I was just being paranoid—I feel like that's all I've been feeling lately—or maybe I was just mixing up my remembrance of the order of events that took place. I may have messed up the timeline a little bit already, but I need to remain hopeful that things will end how it was supposed to again. "Leo was right," Zara scoffed. "You really have lost it."

Eleanor's laughter halted abruptly and her wide smile instantly dropped. Her expression was completely void of emotion now. "I'm not crazy," she whispered. "I'm not crazy." Eleanor started laughing again. Her once sweet, soft laugh turned into a haunting, loud scream, "I'm.. not.. CRAZY!"

Within a blink of an eye, Eleanor darted towards Zara and tackled the older girl to the ground. Bree quickly grabbed my arm and pulled me away from our fighting friends as they wrestled each other on the ground. I couldn't tear my eyes away from the scene.

The second Eleanor made contact with Zara, she froze up for a brief moment as she was experiencing another vision. Her once icy blue eyes turned completely white. Eleanor received visions sporadically, but whenever she made immediate contact with another person, she had the ability to see little pieces of their future.

I wondered what she was seeing right now. Maybe she saw Asher and and Zara finally bringing out the best in each other. I really liked to believe that she saw that. Maybe she saw their deaths when we tried to escape the last time. I wasn't entirely sure what Eleanor could've possibly envisioned, but based off of her reaction it couldn't have been anything good.

During the short time Eleanor was trapped in her own mind and visions, Zara was able to pin her down on the floor. Her knees were pressed into her thighs, while her hands held her wrists tightly against the wooden floor. Eleanor was thrashing around like a rabid animal under Zara's grasp. She continued screaming as she tried to fight back, "IM NOT CRAZY!" Eleanor went on with bed attempt to break free from Zara, but the Asian girl was much stronger than her and was a more experienced fighter.

Zara and Eleanor's fight attracted the attention of all of the kids in the hall. Everyone was circling around the two girls with Bree and I standing right in the front of the crowd. I watched with wide eyes. I wanted to do something but my feet were planted to the ground.

Eventually, Eleanor's crazed screams turned into cries of help. Her eyes would switch from her normal blue color to white as they rolled back and forth from different visions she was receiving the longer Zara held onto her. Eleanor squeezed her eyes shut as tears began streaming down her rosy cheeks. Her pale face was becoming stained with lines from her crying.

Bree was still holding my arm, holding me back. I watched the scene continue to unfold and play out. I felt bad for Eleanor, who couldn't control what she was seeing. The young girl was too innocent and fragile. Her mind couldn't endure all of the horrifying images that came with her newfound powers of precognition.

I couldn't just stand by and watch anymore. "Let go of her," I said, but Zara couldn't hear me over Eleanor's cries and the shouts of everyone else around us. I took a step forward and Bree let go of my arm. "Let go of her, Zara."

The Asian girl didn't even bother to glance over her shoulder when she responded, "Stay out of this, Alexa."

"No," I replied. "Leave her alone. I'm not kidding." Zara smirked as she listened, but didn't let go of Eleanor. I walked over to her side now, standing directly behind her. I placed my hand on her shoulder and stared down into her eyes. "I don't want to hurt you, but I will if you don't let go of her."

Zara narrowed her eyes at me. She looked between my eyes and the hand that I had placed on her shoulder. Zara sighed and nodded. She slowly released her grasp on Eleanor, who was still crying but not screaming anymore. Zara stood up and sent me a curt nod. Without looking at anyone else, she pushed through the crowd of kids and wandered off down the hall. I figured that we had established some sort of mutual respect for each other, even though we don't necessarily like each other, which worked perfectly fine for me.

In the midst of all of the recent chaos, it seemed that all of the shouting caught the attention of nearby Order guards. Two of the men dressed in black uniforms shoved kids aside as they shuffled through to the center of the group. Both men glanced at me and then to Eleanor. They grabbed her arms and lifted her body up off the ground easily. No one said anything as the two guards began to drag Eleanor down the hall and into the elevator.

Her head lifted up in slow motion, and her icy eyes my mine. She mouthed a 'thank you' to me before hanging her head back down again. As the doors of the elevator closed I knew that in that moment, this would be the last time I would ever see Eleanor. The once happy and innocent girl I knew before would forever gone. She had finally snapped. I saw this happen once before and everything was happening all over again. All of the stars were aligning.
