11. LOONEY LOONEY LOONEY

My eyelids were heavy from fatigue as I dragged my feet along the floor. Henry and Leo were trailing closely behind me, and as much as I tried to ignore their presence I couldn't. The two of them were right on my tail.

When I reached the table, I dropped my tray of breakfast food down on it lazily. Asher jumped from my sudden disruption, while Zara and Bree didn't seem fazed. I sent my blonde friend a quick glance, but she didn't bother to look my way. I frowned and plopped down on a chair. Henry and Leo also sat down with their own trays of food.

I rested the side my head on my fist as I leaned over onto the dining hall table with an exhausted expression, mixed with a bit of annoyance. All of my friends—except for Bree, who I still haven't spoke to—were staring at me, waiting for an answer, but I remained silent. To say I was becoming more and more irritated by the minute was an understatement. I wasn't sure if I was vexed because of my lack of sleep, energy, or the fact that Leo and Henry—specifically Henry—wouldn't stop asking me questions about my findings the other day when I searched through Silas' office.

"We gave you a night, like you asked, but now we want to know what you found," Henry said. His tone was less demanding and more of an unsure question.

Leo nodded his head in agreement. His blonde hair flopped up and down as he did so. "Yeah, c'mon Blondie we're all dying to know!" I sighed as I took a bite into a red apple. The crunch was satisfying as I bit into it. I could feel myself regaining some lost energy from the fruit.

After nearly escaping from Silas' office the other day, I told Henry and Leo that I would just tell everyone when we were altogether the next morning. I didn't want to have to repeat myself and I also was still trying to process all of the information myself. It was a lot to take in, but I guess it was time to tell everyone what I was able to find. "I found the missing newspaper," I started off.

"What was on it?" Henry interrupted. I could tell he was becoming excited to find out whether his suspicions had been confirmed. Henry loved being right.

I recited the writing almost verbatim, "On October first, 1989, forty-three women gave birth to children with special abilities. Reginald Hargreeves adopted seven of these children and trained them to become a group of heroes—"

"The Umbrella Academy," Henry cut in again. We all glanced his way as his eyes widened in realization. "How could I forget about them?" He asked himself. Henry was big on history, but he was terrible at remembering dates. "I'm terrible at remembering dates." Henry was also predictable.

"I don't get it," Leo spoke up. The blonde boy wore a confused expression. I didn't understand what he was confused about because I had only explained one thing so far. "Who's the old guy again?"

"Reginald Hargreeves," I repeated myself. My eyebrows furrowed slightly. "How'd you know he was old?"

Leo shrugged. "I can tell by his dumb name," he snickered. I rolled my eyes.

"Reginald was Silas' mother's colleague. He gave Elaine the idea to adopt kids of her own, Silas and Gem. Since she was a specialist in DNA reconstruction, she wanted to take samples of one gifted kid, Gem, and one normal kid, Silas," I explained. Everyone was deep in thought as they listened to all of the information I was telling them about. "When Elaine passed away, Silas must've continued on with her research. He got his idea for the Horror Order from Reginald's Umbrella Academy."

"What about Gem?" Bree asked all of a sudden. Her eyes didn't meet mine but she was still listening.

"She passed away too," I said. I didn't tell them my suspicions about Silas being involved in his sister's death. I didn't exactly have a reason for not telling my friends though. I just kept my theory to myself.

Zara scoffed, "Alright, so Silas has got some baggage.. What's the point?"

I sent her a confused look. "What do you mean?" I asked.

She shrugged nonchalantly. "I mean, why do you guys care so much?"

"Zara, he's using us for his evil experiments," I said as if it were obvious. I didn't understand what she couldn't grasp. I remember when I first found out about Silas' motives. I was scared out of my mind. I couldn't believe that another human being would do something like that to innocent kids.

"In all honesty, I couldn't care less about this guy's experiments," Zara said. Some of her hair fell over her eyes so she nodded her head to move it away. "This place is so much better than Miracle Home. We've got food, clothes, and room to do whatever we want. If you ask me, Silas is basically giving us a better life." Her uncaring demeanor was starting to get on my nerves. How could she not be concerned about the mention of human experiments and being used as weapons?

"I'm with the Japanese chic on this one," Leo remarked. "Sorry, Blondie."

"Vietnamese," Zara corrected him.

Leo waved his hand as if to brush her away. He didn't really care if he was being rude or insensitive. "I've always wanted to have superpowers like those guys in the comics. My favorite character was always Pyro from the X-Men series. I've been told that I look like him."

"I don't see it," I stated bluntly. Leo frowned and shrugged his shoulders. "Henry, you haven't said anything in awhile. What do you think about all this?" The brunette shrugged and I could tell that he was conflicted. "Not you too," I sighed.

"I'm sorry, Alexa, but Zara makes a good point," Henry tried reasoning with me but I wasn't having it. Everyone was just so deprived from a happy childhood that they started to lose hope in their futures. They would accept anything at any cost. I guess I felt differently because I already knew that I'd escape from this compound and meet Five, along with the other Hargreeves. I never lost faith that everything would work out happily, but it seems that my friends already did long before arriving at the Horror Order.

Suddenly, I spotted Eleanor walking into the dining hall. I was surprised to see her so soon, especially since she had just underwent surgery. She still appeared the same from before she left, but I could tell that there was something off with her. Eleanor looked dull and lifeless as she walked over to our table and sat down casually.

"Where have you been?" Leo asked rudely. He didn't bother to ask if she was alright or not. He probably didn't care enough anyway.

Eleanor stared at me from the other side of the table. Her blue eyes pierced into my own as if she were staring directly into my soul. "They took me," she said softly. She seemed quieter than usual.

"Who took you?" Henry asked. His eyes were slightly narrowed as he tried to read her.

Eleanor finally looked away from me and glanced around the room like a deer in the headlights. "The guards," she whispered.

"Are you okay, Elle?" Bree asked the timid girl.

Eleanor froze up for a moment before replying hesitantly, "I can see things now." I shivered from chills whenever I heard her squeaky voice. I already knew that she was talking about her newfound powers of precognition, but everything still felt so unfamiliar for me because I hadn't read Silas' notes last time.

"The quiet one's officially lost it," Leo whispered into my ear. I pushed him away and shot him a look that made him put his hands up in surrender. That boy really had no filter.

Eleanor didn't seem to hear Leo's remark though. She seemed too out of it to even notice much. It was so strange to see her like this again.

"What happened to you, Eleanor?" Henry asked. His voice was low so nobody nearby would hear him. I think he already knew the answer to his own question, but he wanted confirmation from an actual witness.

"You were right, Henry," Eleanor spoke. Her voice was barely above a whisper. I noticed that she was trembling sort-of. "About the experiments.. I can see things now. Things I couldn't see before." I could see Leo twirling his index finger around the side of his head as he mouthed, 'Looney, looney, looney.' Eleanor sunk down in her seat slightly. She was beginning to freak me out now. Then, she uttered the words I was afraid of the most, "They're coming for all of you next."
