09. DING-DONG-DITCH

"Anything?" Henry asked. He ran his hand through his dark hair out of boredom. I sighed and glanced around the wall Henry, Leo, and I had been hiding behind for over an hour and a half. My eyes landed on Silas' office door, which had remained shut for awhile now. I turned back to Henry and shook my head, no.

"Christ, what could he possibly be doing in there?" Leo exclaimed. He made a good point. Silas had been locked away in his office for hours now.

I placed my index finger over my lips as and shushed him. "You're gonna cause a scene," I said in a hushed voice.

"Sounds familiar," Leo muttered. I wasn't in the mood for him right now. I wasn't in the mood for anyone actually, so I just rolled my eyes and feigned a remark.

Bree and I haven't spoken since our public dispute a few weeks ago in the training room. I thought that after I gave her a day or two for space then we'd be back to being friends again, but every time I tried talking to her she ignored me and walked away. Bree wasn't the type of girl to hold a grudge, but she was strong willed and always stayed true to her word. Unfortunately, I didn't have time for resolving our argument right now. I had too much on my mind and too much to do to make sure I can get out of here like I did last time.

I pulled my legs up to my chest and laid my head back on the wall behind me. My eyes blinked in slow motion as I yawned. I was beyond tired, mentally and physically. We had been training hard for hours upon hours every single day for the past few weeks. I continuously had to remind myself that it could've been worse, but my positive mindset was beginning to falter. At least I had fighting experience and wasn't getting knocked to the ground or punched in the face like the last time I went through this. In fact, I was one of the best fighters in this whole compound. I was beginning to get bored of my winning streak since I had nearly perfected all of my offensive attacks. Sometimes I had to pretend to be clueless whenever I caught the attention of Silas, who liked to linger in the training rooms and watch the partner work we learned to do. I could tell he was up to something but I wasn't sure what.

To top off my bad mood, I was way too stressed out about preserving the timeline to get an actual night of sleep. If I was lucky, I would finally be able to close my eyes and rest, but only to wake up in some random hour during the middle of night and be unable to fall back asleep again. My entire body ached from all of the exercising and cried for relief. My fatigue made me even more quiet and irritable than I already was before. I was running out of energy when I needed it the most.

"I say we take action," Leo spoke up. Henry and I both shared a look and then turned to Leo, waiting for him to explain. "We need to lure the old man out of his room."

"How do you propose we do that?" Henry asked, unimpressed by his friend's suggestion. He always seemed to underestimate Leo's intelligence—much like the everyone else—but sometimes the blonde made good points.

Henry was the type of guy who was smarter than everyone else and knew it. He was humble about his brain though, so he didn't flaunt it as much. He kind of reminded me of Five, only in the intellectual aspect of his personality though. Henry might shoot down your idea because it was dumb, whereas Five would shoot it down and then let you know just how dumb it really was. I thought his remarks were quite amusing and humorous, though they could be cruel at times.

Five was the opposite of Henry when it came to showcasing just how intelligent he was. I missed his long, confusing rants about time and his everlasting list of theories. Even though I had no idea what he was talking about most of the time, I liked to listen and pretend I knew what was going on because I admired his understanding of everything. Sometimes, I wish I was just as smart as him but even then I doubt I'd be able to keep up.

"I'm glad you asked," Leo said mischievously.

"I'm not," I mumbled to myself.

Leo wore a smirk as he spoke, "First, we need a distraction. Luckily for you guys, I'm great at impressions and I can run pretty fast."

"What do impressions and running have to do with this?" Henry interrupted him.

"You'll see," Leo said, rolling his eyes. I could tell that he must've came up with his ridiculous plan, while we were sitting in this hallway almost all night now. "Once Silas is out of his office, Alexa will sneak in and search for whatever it is we're here for."

"A missing newspaper," Henry reminded his friend.

"Right, paper," Leo disregarded him. Henry shook his head in disappointment. Their friendship confused and made perfect sense to me at the same time.

"Your plan isn't awful but you forgot one thing," Henry said. Leo tilted his head. "What happens when Silas realizes you're only horsing around?"

Leo chuckled softly and placed a hand on Henry shoulder. "That's when you give her the signal that it's time to get the hell out. Haven't you seen any spy movies?"

"No actually, I haven't. I don't have any money," Henry said as if it were an obvious answer. Technically, it was because Henry was a jobless orphan. Leo, on the other hand, had a family before they decided to give him up. At least that's what I heard. "Anyway, what if Alexa doesn't make it out in time?" Henry asked.

I rolled my eyes. I'm right here but he seemed to only be asking Leo. "Don't worry," I spoke up. "I will." I was sure of myself. I didn't want to risk getting caught, in fear of the repercussions.

Henry sent me a curt and then turned back to Leo. "Alright, buddy, show us what you got." I think both of us were a bit skeptical of Leo and his 'master plan,' but we were bored and tired. Anything was better than nothing at this point.

Leo stood up suddenly. He turned towards Henry and I with a serious face as he saluted a goodbye to us. I smirked and shook my head at his usual antics. Leo was all jokes. I doubt he ever took anything seriously in life. Sometimes, it was nice to have him around because he always knew how to lighten a somber mood, but mostly his rude comments just pissed everyone off.

Henry and I leaned over the corner of the wall and watched Leo walk towards Silas' office. The blonde boy stopped right in front of the tall, threatening door. He knocked rapidly on the door before shouting in an awful high pitched voice, "Mister Silas, sir! Come quick! There's an emergency on level two in the laboratory!" Leo glanced over his shoulder towards Henry and I, and stuck up two thumbs before turning on his heel and dashing down the hallway. The blonde boy escaped using the elevator.

As soon as Leo left, Silas' office door swung open, and the older man came out with an unreadable expression on his face. I couldn't tell if he was worried about the fake emergency or excited that it had something to do with the laboratory. Silas was quick on his feet as he walked swiftly towards the elevator Leo had left on.

I turned back to look at Henry. We shared the same dumbfounded expression. "There is no way that Leo just ding-dong-ditched Silas," I said in utter disbelief.

Henry nodded his head slowly. "There is no way that Leo just ding-dong-ditched Silas and it worked," he added. The two of us broke the sudden silence with our soft laughter. I couldn't help the smile on my face. This was one of those moments where Leo was lightening the mood with his idiotic jokes. I didn't know how much I needed to laugh or smile until now. The sudden happiness that rushed over me felt like a big relief, but the feeling came and went as soon I was brought back to my reality again. "You should probably search his office before he comes back," Henry reminded me. I frowned slightly but nodded anyway.

I stood up and walked over to Silas' office. My hands turned the knob and pulled the door open. Once I was inside the room, I shut the door quietly and went right to work. It was kind of strange being in his office again. The room still gave me the weird, creepy feeling like it did when he called me in here. I prayed to God that he wouldn't walk in and find me snooping through his things. I can't even imagine what the consequences would be.
