Chapter 2. November 2-3 1963.

It was a sad day for the Myers family, they went back to their house to clean up the mess in Judith's room and pick out the outfit she would wear in her wake and funeral they had picked out certain things they would keep and allowed Judith's friends to take what they wanted with anything left over would be sent to the Goodwill.

Part of the things they kept were Judith's diaries they would read later when they could bring themselves to them, they still wanted answers, all the while unaware that they were being watched.

Grandma Katherine arrived with their friends from Russellville to help the family get ready, Donald and Edith told no one but Katherine the day that Sheriff Barstow broke the news that it was Micheal that had killed Judith this past Halloween. It was news that convinced them that they had failed Judith and Micheal, both they failed Judith by dismissing the strange behavior Micheal started exhibiting that allowed Michael to kill her, and they failed Micheal by not getting him checked before this could happen. They blamed themselves for it more than anyone else.

The family ate their breakfast and got dressed to attend Judith's wake that was going to be held in the chapel all of her friends from Haddonfield high we're going to be there Donald and Edith chose to keep her casket closed because they wanted people to remember her for the way she lived rather than the way she died.

Donald and Edith walked into the chapel supporting each other, while Katherine held hands with Michael and Cynthia, following behind her daughter and son-in-law. They sat in the front pews in view of the closed casket. Low church music could be heard as all the seats were filled. Pastor Charles Graham walked in front of the podium, waiting for everyone to sit before the wake started.

"Before we began, I was asked by the family to express their gratitude at the show of support while they dealt with the loss of their beloved daughter and granddaughter Judith. There will be no viewing of Judith's body, per the request of her family; they wish for all who loved her to remember her as she was when she was alive."

"So now I'm going to ask all those who wish to talk and share stories about Judith, please come at this time." Rev. Graham says.

"Hello everyone, my name is Clara Johnson I was Judith's elementary school teacher, she was always such a sweet child she made friends with the other children easily, there was just something about her that made people gravitate toward her, she always tried to help me in class and other students it was a sad yet happy day the day she left my class, but I knew whatever classroom she ended up in they would be lucky to have her. When I heard the news of her passing, I was devastated about such a bright light being extinguished. The parties responsible have no idea what they took from us, and this town had such a bright future. To the family and all those that loved her, I give my deepest sympathies and pray for your healing and peace. " Mrs. Johnson concluded.

"Hello everyone, my name is Mr. Bradley Stephens I was Judith's English teacher and just as Mrs Johnson stated about Judith in elementary school the same can be said about her in high school, she was always helpful and polite, and you never really saw her by herself, she had a very large friend group that when you saw them together in the hallway or during lunch period you would always see her smiling and laughing. Again, as Mrs Johnson said the news of Judith's passing affected everyone who knew her and loved her, especially Kathy and Gwen those two ladies were as close as sisters to her, she will be greatly missed in our school. " Mr. Stephens said.

"Gwen Kyes I believe you're up next." Pastor Graham continued.

"Hello everyone, forgive me. I'm struggling to come up with the words to honor one of my best friends Judith Kathy and I were all in the same elementary school class it just so happened Kathy and I were both shy kids and Judith was the complete opposite of that I will never forget how larger than life she was in such a little girl's body. And it worked out that our mom and dads became close too, which was great for us. We enjoyed doing our homework together going to play on the playground together going on dates and movies and to the mall like teenagers do. She was also very wise. I can't count how many times Kathy and I came to her for advice, and she seemed to always know what to say and do to make things better for us. All three of us talked about our future: we would go to college, get our dream jobs, get married, have kids and watch our children and future grandchildren grow up. The night she died, I was supposed to meet her and Kathy at Judith's house. I was about to walk out my door when Kathy called me and told me what she saw when she went to Judith's house. I couldn't believe what reason would anyone have to hurt Judith when everyone as far as I knew didn't have so much as an unkind word to say about her. Honestly, I am still struggling with this. I keep thinking she's going to call me, but then I remember why she won't, and I find myself sobbing, to Judith. Thank you for being one of my best friends, and I promise I'll never forget you. "Gwen Concluded.

"Now, Kathy Dryer wants to say a few words." Pastor Graham said.

"Judith and Gwen are my sisters in all but blood Judith had a great sense of humor and like the others said a personality that draws you to her, I know that's what drew Gwen and I to her the night she died I never imagined that would be the last time I'd ever see her the three of us planned our lives out but none of us pictured this until we were old and gray grandma's watching our grandchildren grow up. That was the life we envisioned for ourselves, and we always thought that it would be that way. But sometimes things don't go as we plan it, today being an example of that. I will never forget how still she was, as they put her in the ambulance, and it breaks my heart that that was the last time I saw her. I'm sure everyone here is hurt, heartbroken just as much as Gwen and I are. Our lives will never be the same without her. I will miss everything about her that made me proud to be her friend, her advice, her support and her loyalty and love. I wish she was still with us. " Kathy concluded.

"Leigh Brackett would like to say something." Pastor Graham said. .

"Judith was unlike any girl I ever knew we started out as friends and after a while developed feelings for each other we agreed if things didn't work out between us in that way that we would maintain our friendship and of course, as all of you know eventually our romantic feelings went away, but our friendship remained strong she was a very special girl that anyone would be fortunate to know I was glad to be one of those people that was touched by her personality I will miss her smile her laugh and everything about her that brightened my life. "Leigh said.

"For those of you who don't know me, my name is Keith Cyphers. My wife Shelley are childhood friends of Donald and Edith. We went to high school together and attended each other's weddings, and we were there when Edith found out she was pregnant with Judith. And when Judith was born, she was the first baby to be born out of our friend's group, but not the last before Donald and Edith moved here we helped with Judith it was such a joy to see her big toothless smile and her crawl to us when Shelley started showing Judith was fascinated by her growing belly it was the cutest thing any of us ever witnessed Judith was the reason the rest of us wanted daughters of our own. When I heard we lost Judith my wife and I were overcome with grief and anger and feeling terrible for Donald and Edith we all thought that we would get to see her get married and that our children would carry on our friendship and for the most part they have, they are just as heartbroken as we are and now somehow we have to go on without our beautiful Judith and that's a bitter pill to swallow, but such is a painful part of life I take comfort in knowing that one day we will all see Judith again and when that time comes it will be as though we never lost her. " Keith said.

One by one, people recounted a story of Judith leaving the room in tears. Finally, the wake was called to a close and the Myers along with their friends returned home to have dinner and settle down from the tiring day they had.

Once everyone settled in for the night they tossed and turned about the events the next day would bring Judith would finally be put to rest and things would seem to settle down, they thought, but the Myers and Sheriff Barstow knew that once this thing hits the court and the town's people learn the truth it will be complicated for the Myers family.

Donald and Edith had woken up just as tired and drained as they had the morning before they were overwhelmed with multiple emotions that still held them captive in their grips the diaries were kept out of sight so their friends and Katherine wouldn't see them it was hard to face the world like this when everyone looks at you with pitiful eyes.

They were going through the motions. Anyone that knew them well enough could say that they did the night Judith died because they couldn't get rid of the feeling of numbness that cast a dark shadow over their lives. They go about doing things for Cynthia and Micheal, but there is a very noticeable shift in the Myers house that they thought was there because of Judith dying.

They went to the burial ground in silence. The place they chose for Judith to be laid to rest was a spot that they as well as Katherine could rest there beside her when the time came.

The cars with Judith's schoolmates had parked and were trekking towards Donald and Edith.

Katherine held Micheal and Cynthia's hands as she sat next to Donald and Edith waiting to say their last goodbye to Judith this was the final step for Donald and Edith before they shifted their focus on Micheal the reporters stood, taking pictures and whispering into their microphones because Judith's death had been the most popular story since it happened before they really didn't have stories that made major headline material like the death of Judith Myers. They've tried every tactic they could think to get Donald and Edith to do a sit down interview, but they're most exciting thing they got was Donald finally snapping at them screaming our daughter's life isn't just a career making or breaking headline for fifteen years we took care of her raised her and loved her, and now she's gone and none of you have the decency to let us grieve in peace this could happen to any of you and the last thing you will want is story hungry vultures using your pain to further your career.

It took Vance and Keith to remove him, reminding him that Cynthia and Micheal didn't need to see their dad go to jail for assaulting an insensitive reporter.

Once Donald and Edith went home followed by their friends Edith and Katherine with the other women, the men sat in the living room one more time to speak.

"Donald, you're fine now, I've never seen you so upset that you looked ready to kill these guys." said Vance.

"Yes I'm calm now since Judith's death Edith and I hardly eat or sleep I go to work and people stare at me and whisper and look at me as if they feel sorry for me then the damn reporters Edith doesn't tell me, but I know she feels uncomfortable going out with Ma and the kids running errands people staring at her and the kids it's aggravating we're not animals to gawk at like people visiting a zoo we've lost our child that's all we are hurting flesh and blood human beings who are suffering trying to raise the two remaining children we have and yes I'm angry that Judith is gone, and I'm angry that this happened to us. " Donald replied.

"You have a right to feel that way I can imagine the tornado of emotions that are swirling around inside you or anyone who has kids should understand that you might feel a lot of things if they were in your shoes and I agree that it can be incredibly frustrating to have people stare and feel like they have to walk on eggshells when they are around you. But remember you're not going through this alone, we are in this with you, and we aren't going anywhere. " Keith said.

Meanwhile, in the kitchen, the ladies worked and talked.

"Edith, you barely said a word all day, how do you handle it?" Shelley asked.

I try to keep it all together for Michael and Cynthia, but I'm actually hanging on by a thread. I'm angry, heartbroken and just drained. " Edith replied.

"Well under the circumstances, honey that's understandable you've got every right to feel that way but know you aren't alone, you have us who will be with you every step of the way. No matter what happens. " Gale said.

"I know that Donald and I can always depend on you to help us with anything, and we will always be grateful." Edith replied.

"Honestly, sweetheart, this kind of thing can make you sick. To hold it in, you too should think about seeing a doctor yourselves, it will do you some good I think. " Katherine said.

"Mama Katherine is right, Edith, I mean you hardly sleep or eat. I think you both are becoming depressed and just don't know if you can't properly take care of Micheal and Cynthia, you can't take care of yourselves. Shelley and I will look into some doctors that can help you. " Gale replied.

That evening, Gale and Shelley sat down and discussed the best course of action for their friends.

"Let's look in the phone book and write down a list of names and narrow it down to people nearby. We don't want Donald and Edith to have a long way to go," Shelley said.

Vance and Keith went inside, seeing their wives scribbling on sheets of paper.

"What are you guys planning?" Keith asked.

"What does it look like we are going to get Donald and Edith some help they are both fighting a depression that will surely make them both sick, they can't take care of Micheal and Cynthia like that you both know it just and we do, we've talked to Edith, and she has agreed to let us get her and Donald some help before something worse happens." Gale replied.

"Yes, I agree, to look in Donald's eyes when that reporter asked those questions and the fact that Donald lunged at him ready to kill him shows that both he and Edith are holding on by a thread that's close to snapping." Vance said.

"So, let us get down to business." We need to be there for them. They are family, and we don't desert family." Keith replied.

If we don't do something, I get the impression that something bad is going to happen, just as bad as Judith's death. We promised Papa Thomas and Mama Katherine that we would always be there for Donald and Edith, and we will stay committed to that promise. " Gale said.

"So, let's help our family heal." Vance answered.

It was a long night for the couples as they created lists and narrowed down the names that they would bring to Donald and Edith so that they can get a handle on this pain consuming their lives.

"Hello, Donald and Edith, let's sit down and speak." Gale said.

"Sure, just sit down, you want something to drink?" Donald asked.

"Now we are good, we brought you the list of doctors that will help you with this. We want to help you get better because Micheal and Cynthia need you, we need you Mama Katherine needs you. " Vance replied.

Edith sat beside Donald, "Who do you have in mind?" Edith asked.

"We've compiled a list of names with offices nearby we think can help you with this." Keith responded.

"I'll call and make an appointment for Edith and I can you keep an eye on the kids while we take care of this." Donald said.

"That's what family is for, and we will always be family." Shelley replied.

"That means a lot to us. We are trying hard to get back to where we were, but the questions and the loss are just more than we can take, and we are trying to make sense of this, and we can't. " Edith said.

"Edith honey, no one expects you to try to figure out right away these things take time to process, even in the best of times." Gale replied.

"They're right, honey, we all in this room are suffering, but you both took the brunt of it. And it's affecting you the hardest. " Katherine said.
