One Way Back

It was a dream come true. My life's work had finally paid off.

I have been working on a perfect spell to visit the dead for years, and now, on Hallow's Eve, it finally worked. I crossed over to the realm of the dead.

It wasn't an easy spell to weave, but I did it. Still, I am not sure how exactly I managed to accomplish it since it doesn't feel like I did anything different, still, it worked.

It was awesome catching up with my long lost relatives, some of whom I have never even had the honor to meet.

I learned so much about the human existence and what happened after, that I was sure I would live a much richer life once my spirit went back to my slumbering body. It felt liberating to know what awaited me, not to have to constantly worry about it.

However, when I said goodbye to my loved ones and cast the return spell, nothing happened. There was no sign that I was even trying to use any magic.

I was still standing in the middle of the wonderful meadow, surrounded by the long-deceased members of my family. There was no way to crossover.

Something or someone was blocking my return.

A chill ran down my spine. Was I dead? I wondered.

That was when I became stricken with horror. I was too young to die.

Visiting was one thing, but giving up the pleasure of life, I couldn't do that.

That was when the sun, that was shining during my whole visit, was blotted out by the ominous clouds rolling in. Rain started pelting on us, and the whole atmosphere was one of trepidation.

Thunder was all I could hear, but there was also an eerie feeling of thousand eyes watching me menacingly.

"Don't you think we would have loved to see our living family members as well? Why do you get to do that, and they don't? What makes you so special?

Until you find a way to help them visit, you will stay trapped here!" The ghostly voices said.

"What do you mean? Am I dead?" I asked.

"Not yet, You are in a coma now. But if you don't give us what we want, until the next year, your body will die, and there won't be going back." They said.

"But I don't know how exactly I made it work, this time," I said.

"Figure it out fleshy one, or you become one of us. Your body will start deteriorating, rotting, until it becomes magot food. Until there is no flesh left on your bones. Figure it out." They said, fading away.

Once the skies cleared, I fell to my knees flabbergasted, lost, with no idea what I should do or how.

"Don't worry, we'll help." My dead said.

That's how I, Marigold, a humble witch started working on a plan to escape the afterlife with my dead family members as my fateful sidekicks. Wish me luck!
