Chapter Sixty
Bucky shuffles into the library where he can hear Sydney typing away at a laptop. He had woken up earlier, as Sydney left their bed, before he promptly went back to sleep. He yawns and runs his fingers through his hair as he moves to the central table where Sydney sits. She looks up from the laptop to watch him a moment before she turns back to her work.
"What are you doing?" He asks her as he sits across the table from her. Sydney glances over the top of her laptop and smiles softly at his disheveled appearance. He's been getting used to the bunker in the last few days. Which actually means he has been sleeping a lot. There is a sense of relief that has come from being around Sydney and knowing that she is alive and being free of the government. For the first time in a very long time, he isn't fighting or hiding or working. He has free time and he gets to spend it with the love of his life. The only thing that would make this better, would be if Steve was here.
"Just looking into some omens" She answers, turning her attention back to the laptop.
"For Lucifer?" Bucky asks, a tinge of disbelief in his voice because vampires are one thing, but the devil is another and he is still trying to wrap his head around it all. She hums in agreement. Suddenly, her phone rings and vibrates on the table between them. She pulls the phone closer to see the ID before she lets out a breath.
"Sam! Dean!" She shouts and then answers the phone, setting it on speaker. "Hey, Cas," She greets.
"Hello, Sydney" Castiel greets back. "And I assume...James is there with you"
"Yeah" Bucky agrees. "Nice to meet you...sort of" He shares a look with Sydney who is watching him softly. He shrugs back at her. He knows about Castiel, Sydney has filled him in on a lot since he turned up here at the bunker. Not all, they are still working through stuff, but he now knows a lot, including that they have a friend that is an actual angel.
"What about Sam and Dean?" Castiel asks.
"We're here" Sam answers as he and Dean walk into the library to join their sister.
"You still living out an '80s buddy comedy with Crowley?" Dean asks as he pulls out and sits in the chair next to Sydney.
"Unfortunately." Castiel answers sounding rather annoyed, which is becoming increasingly common with the angel. He now shows a whole array of human emotions.
"Any news on Lucifer?" Sam asks.
"Actually, yes. Look at the news" Castiel answers. Dean motions to Sydney's laptop and she nods in agreement, pulling it closer to her.
"One sec" Sydney types away at the computer to bring up the newest news stories, specifically the one relating to Vince Vicente.
"Is that Vicente?" Dean asks, leaning on the back of her chair to look at the news story.
"The rock star?" Bucky asks and Sydney nods in answer. "What does he have to do with Lucifer?" Dean lets out a breath through his nose and shakes his head.
"Tell me that's not Lucifer" Dean counters, turning to look at the phone.
"We don't know" Castiel answers.
"Cas, I-I thought you said Rowena got some licks in" Sam reminds him. "Shouldn't he have burned through his vessel by now?"
"Yeah, but we don't know. We don't...." Suddenly Crowley takes the cellphone from Castiel and turns on the speakerphone.
"Hello, boys" Crowley greets. "Sweetheart" Sydney rolls her eyes. "Long time. We team up to save the world, and then bupkis. You don't call, you don't write."
"Yeah, we don't care," Dean mumbles.
"Crowley – Lucifer" Sam warns, trying to just get this over with now that Crowley is involved in the conversation. None of them want to talk to him any longer than they have to.
"Lucifer. Think about it" Crowley starts. "Of all the extinct rock acts, Ladyheart are the most Paleolithic. A major label sponsored comeback in 2016 for those dinosaurs? It doesn't feel like a wholly natural turn of events, does it?"
"Maybe Lucifer found a way to heal his vessel" Castiel adds.
"Yeah, but still...I mean, what the hell?" Dean asks, exacerbated by this whole situation. They had already dealt with Lucifer once, they never thought that they would have to do it again.
"He's in L.A. I'll see you there" Crowley states and then hangs up. Dean lets out a breath and leans back in his seat.
"So...L.A.?" Dean asks the table. Sam nods in agreement before he looks at Sydney.
"Syd?" Sam asks her. "You joining us?"
"You need me to?" Sydney counters, looking across at him.
"If this is Lucifer, then we need a heavy hitter" Sam points out. "That's you, Syd"
"What about you, Barnes?" Dean asks. "Are you coming with or....?" Dean glances at Sydney, unsure if the two of them have talked about hunting yet, or if they have just been giving Bucky space to adjust to things.
"I will be staying here" Bucky answers as he stands. "Natasha is going to stop by, to check in for Sword...it's a formality" He shrugs a little. "Maybe next time" He grabs his coffee from the table and then leaves to get ready for Natasha's arrival.
"So we're just inviting random people into the bunker now?" Dean asks Sydney who snorts and flicks his ear.
"Natasha is a spy" Sydney points out. "She's not likely to go about spilling about this place to the first person she crosses on the street" She defends as she closes her laptop. "James just needs to show Sword that he has somewhere to live and that he's settling into civility" She picks up the laptop and then pats Dean's chest. "Stop looking for things" She scolds him. She then leaves the room, following after Bucky.
