Chapter Forty-Two
Sydney leads the way into the Bunker when she, Dean, and Mary arrive. They had spent time going through the truth and facts with Mary to get her to understand what is going on. It took a while. And Sydney is now actually starving. She curls her arm around her middle and wrinkles her nose. She's never felt this hungry before.
"You live here?" Mary asks them.
"Yeah, when we're not on the road. It's an old Men of Letters bunker." Dean answers
"Men of Letters? Yeah. They're a myth. An old Hunter's story" Mary argues.
"Not so much" Sydney mumbles, rubbing her thigh.
"New duds look good." Dean offers Mary. Sydney suddenly stiffens, sniffing at the air. "Syd?" Dean asks, she sniffs the air again before disappearing at vamp-speed. Mary gasps in surprise. "Yeah, should have started with that" Dean grumbles to himself.
"Dean!" Sydney yells, causing Mary and Dean to hurry into the library where they find Sydney. There are several large splatters of blood on the floor where Sydney is crouching.
"That's blood." Mary points out.
"Yeah" Dean agrees and shares a look with Sydney. She touches the blood and then brings her fingers to her nose. She sniffs at it, her face changing into her vampire face as she scents it. She is quick to pull her fingers away from her face.
"It's Sam's" She informs Dean. Dean then removes his gun and cocks it as Sydney stands, wiping her fingers on her dress. Dean hands Mary another gun.
"Take this. Stay here" Dean tells Mary who nods. Dean and Sydney share a look before she disappears at vamp-speed
.......
Mary moves around checking out a book open on the table. She hears a door open and close and she hides behind a pillar as the footsteps approach her. She then bursts out of cover to find Castiel, only she has no idea who he is to her children.
"Hands in the air. Get on your knees" She threatens with the gun. Castiel looks at her confused.
"Who are you, and where is Sam?" He asks.
"Hands, now" She demands. Dean rushes back into the room to find Mary facing off with Castiel.
"Whoa! It's okay. It's okay. He's a friend, all right?" He tells Mary as Sydney returns to the room. "Hey, Cas" Dean greets. A relieved Castiel steps forward and embraces Dean tightly. Sydney smiles softly at the two of them.
"Dean" Castiel whispers. "Dean!" He shouts, louder when he realises that he is really here.
"Hey" Castiel then hugs Dean tightly. The two men clutching to one another. "Okay. Alright," Dean pats Castiel's back.
"Dean" He whispers and then pulls back. "You're alive?"
"Yeah" Dean agrees.
"What about the bomb and the Darkness? What happened?" He then notices Sydney who waves her fingers at him. "Sydney" He steps closer to her. "You are...you?" She hums and nods.
"Yeah, I'm okay..." She assures him. "Where is Sam?" She asks him.
"He's not here" Castiel answers. Mary cocks her head, studying Castiel.
"Are you a hunter?" She asks him.
"No, I'm an angel" Castiel states at the same time that Dean offers. "He's an angel"
"Come again?" Mary asks and looks at Sydney for elaboration.
"An Angel" Sydney offers. "With a capital 'A'. You know, wings, harp"
"No, I don't have a harp" Castiel argues.
"This is Castiel. Cas, this is...Mary. Winchester" Dean introduces.
"Your mother" Castiel realises.
"Yeah. So, wait, uh, where – where is Sam? He's not answering his phone, there's blood on the floor. What's going on?" Dean asks turning to Castiel.
"I don't know. We came back here, there was a woman waiting for us. She blasted me away. I don't know who she was. I don't know what happened to Sam"
"I don't understand. What happened?" Mary asks.
"Okay, well, the bunker's empty, so they've obviously left here. You said woman....not an angel, not a demon. A human?" Sydney offers. Castiel nods.
"She was human" Castiel agrees.
"When did this go down?" Dean asks as he walks to one of the tables and grabs his laptop.
"It was 2:12 a.m" Castiel answers as Sydney moves to look over Dean's shoulder as he types away.
"Is that a-a computer?" Mary asks.
"Yes," Castiel answers. "I don't trust them" Dean clicks through different traffic camera views.
"Got something" He admits. "An S.U.V. ran a red light a few blocks from here at 2:21 a.m. And there wasn't another car for 40 minutes"
"How did you do that?" Mary asks him.
"I hacked the traffic cams" Dean answers and then notices Mary's look. "Welcome to the future"
.........
Later; Dean is driving the Impala down a road. Mary sits in the front with him. Sydney and Castiel are in the back. There isn't time to stop, which means Sydney hasn't fed yet. Which is making this whole trip very hard for her. She clutches to her stomach and closes her eyes. Castiel's eyes are on her. He is the only one that might stop her from going rabid here. They managed to find a phone number for the woman who took Sam, which means that they get to go back to the bunker to track it. It also will give her time to feed. Tires are then screeching as the Impala is hit by another vehicle. The passenger side windows shatter inwards. The car skids as Dean attempts to control it, slamming on the breaks before they come to a stop. Dean reaches over to check on Mary.
"Mom?" Castiel leans over and touches a finger to her head to check on her.
"She's unconscious, but there's no serious damage" He assures the twins.
"Alright" He whispers and then looks at Castiel. "Help her" Dean gets out of the car and then checks on the damage of the car. He lets out a breath and looks back into the car. Sydney has disappeared. Castiel climbs out of the car and moves to check on Mary. He sets her upright, she's bleeding from a cut to her head.
"Dean Winchester, I presume" Dean turns around to find Ms Watts watching him. She steps away from her vehicle, her hands behind her back as she activates the warding on her brass knuckles as she walks towards Dean. "You should be more careful with your location services on your phone"
"Are you one of them?" Dean asks.
"I'm one of them"
"Yeah" He whispers and nods before he walks towards Ms Watts and grabs her by the collar. "You tell me where my brother is, and I might take it easy on you"
"Oh, please don't" She counters. They begin fighting with Ms Watts getting the upper hand against both Dean and Castiel. Dean ends up on the ground, his lip split and his eye busted. He stands and reaches for his gun but it is gone. "Looking for this?" Ms Watts asks and holds up Dean's gun. "So, round two? Anyone?" Sydney suddenly vamp-speeds between her and Dean. Ms Watt appears surprised by her presence here. Sydney's vampire face emerges and she lunges at Ms Watt.
............
Sydney sits on the road with Ms Watts clutches to her lap as she feeds from her neck, the woman is likely close to, if not already dead, but Sydney isn't done. Amara left her body starved. She's so hungry. So very hungry. She's going to be taking each and every last drop she can get.
"Syd" Dean has an arm around his middle as he moves towards his sister. She snaps her head up and hisses at Dean who holds up his hands and takes a few steps back from her, Sydney goes back to feeding.
"Amara left her half-starved" Castiel offers, touching Dean's shoulder. "Syd didn't mean to..."
"I know" Dean stops him. He knows that his sister is just hungry and that hiss was probably more to protect him, to stop him from getting too close to her. He knows he was lucky she managed to hold off this long.
.............
Sydney is ashamed of herself. She's been good. She's always been good. She blinks, sending tears down her face. Dean and Castiel hide Ms Watt's body and her car as a now conscious Mary keeps an eye on Sydney. Who is dealing with her guilt of what happened. Dean moves back towards them, scrolling through a cell phone.
"Found her cellphone in the car. Last phone call was made from Aldrich, Missouri. We're guessing Sam's probably around there" Dean offers and then looks at Sydney.
"Good. That's great" She whispers as her lip quivers.
"Are you okay?" Mary asks her. Sydney shakes her head.
"No" She offers and covers her face as she cries. "I'm sorry" Mary looks at Dean for help here.
"Syd doesn't feed on human blood" Dean explains for Mary as he moves to Sydney. Mary looks at the twins sadly as Dean wipes the blood from Sydney's face.
"I spent my life running from this, from the supernatural" Mary tells them. "And I got out. I never wanted this for either of you or Sam"
"Mom, I get it," Dean assures her. "We both do. If I had kids, I wouldn't want them in this. But Syd, Sam and me... saving people and hunting things, this is our life. I think we make the world a better place. I know that we do" He touches Sydney's chin and lifts it. "Okay?" He asks her, she sniffles a little and pulls her face away from him.
