Chapter Fifty-Nine
Bucky pulls his hair back to tie it away from his face as he and Sydney get ready to go to bed. After Sam and Dean returned and then retreated to their bedrooms to rest, Bucky and Sydney lounged around in the library, more for Bucky who delved into the books to find out the truth of everything. To educate himself on Sydney's life and the things that she has seen and been through and hunted. But he has been quiet. Because he has been thinking about Dean's response to him being here.
"Syd" He starts and she hums, pulling on a pair of fluffy socks. "If Dean isn't...If he can't adjust to me being here..."
"Dean is just....butthurt" Sydney points out as she sits on the end of the bed, drawing her fingers through her hair, drawing out a braid. "The last time I met a boy and fell in love..." Bucky closes his eyes and sighs, suddenly understanding.
"You left" He finishes and she hums in agreement.
"Dean and I were so close growing up," She admits. "We were twins, so it was just something that happened, every moment, of every single day, it was us. And then after our mom died, originally" Bucky nods, understanding. "And dad, he had us on the road all the time, we found it hard to make friends, but it was okay, because we had each other. Comfort and companionship in a life that didn't allow it outside of the family. I ruined that by falling in love with someone. In getting pregnant. In running away.....you are a reminder of the last time I fell in love. He's scared, but he's Dean, so he's lashing out...once he gets his head around the fact that you are different, that you are like us, then he will see that this isn't me making a choice between him and you" She leans up and holds out her hands towards him, Bucky lets out a soft breath and sits on the bed, letting her take his face in her hands. "This is you joining us" She adds and leans closer to him. "Not me running away, but welcoming you into this life, into this family" She gives him a soft smile. "You...understand that too, right?" He curls his fingers around her wrists and smiles.
"I know" He assures her. If it was just about them, then they would have left after dealing with the Thule. He understands that by being here, it is not about Sydney. It is about the whole Winchester family. This is her life, and rather than running away from it, she's brought him into it. He assumes she never showed her former lover this part of it. Because he is different from the last one. He is not completely human. He has been designed to be stronger and more resilient, and she is not the same person she was all those years ago. Dean is just struggling to understand how this is going to work. He's worried about things changing too much. "I love you," Bucky assures her. "Your brother isn't going to scare me away..." She lets out a breath of relief. She thought Dean would be a serious hurdle, and whilst this is day one, it is a good mindset for things to come. Dean won't let this go easily. He is not that sort of man. It will take him some time to come around but Sydney is sure that he will. She hopes that he will.
.....
Dean pulls his headphones when he spots his sister lingering at the end of his bed, her arms folded over her chest. He knew this was coming but he thought it would be Sam that got to him first. He wrinkles his nose and then clears his throat.
"What is it, Syd?" He asks. She gives him an annoyed look. He rolls his eyes and sits up. He knows exactly why she is here. "I'm trying" He assures her. "Inviting an outsider in..."
"He's not an outsider" She defends. "Bucky's older than us, been through more than us..." She sits on the edge of his bed next to him. "He could have chosen peace and quiet and he didn't...He chose me and this life..." She adds and tilts her head. "He chose monsters over peace...for me" Dean's eyes soften a little with that explanation. "I love him, and he loves me....and with the life that we live, I am going to hold onto that as hard as I can. And you can accept it, or..."
"Or what?" He asks her. "You'll leave?"
"No" She answers firmly. She isn't about to walk away from her brothers. "But you might find that I don't hunt with you and Sam anymore ... .me and Bucky will hunt alone" She shrugs a little. Dean stares at the side of her head. They've just got her back from Amara and just started hunting together again. He doesn't want her to leave and he doesn't want to stop hunting with her. He supposes he can get on board with Bucky if it means that he can still hunt with his sister at his side. That's all he wants. To keep his family together, even if it means adding one more member. It wouldn't be the first time. Bobby. Jody. Castiel. They are all 'outsiders' in a way. He pulls a face and then hugs Sydney, surprising her. She sinks into the embrace though. Lifting her arm up to hug him back.
