Chapter 5: We literally burnt a place down

I looked at the flyer and smirked.

I already made the swim team. The archery one was next.

If I planned to annoy Annabeth back into liking me, this was the way to do it.
So the second I had a free period, along with Grover, I made my towards the archery ground.

Your probably wondering how huge our school was, given it's massive facilities.
In reality, it wasn't that big.
Since we lived in a tiny tiny town in the middle of practically nowhere, we had one huge communal school/ college for the entire town. And for town Jupiter, whose kids also attended Half-Blood High.
Though their town was somewhat bigger than ours, they still studied here.

And yes, the name Half-Blood high might sound weird and crazy. But that's it. It is weird and crazy. No ones questioned it and I don't think anyone cares anymore.

And as we made our way down the archery place, I could see the silhouette of Annabeth, standing there with her hands on her hips. She didn't notice us yet, her head was turned as she focused on something in the distance.

I cleared my throat as I approached her, Grover ducking behind me. She whipped around and narrowed her eyes.

"What is HE doing here?" she asked Grover, ignoring my attempt at catching her eye. Her eyebrows scrunched up adorably in annoyance.

"The thing is...." he began, twiddling his thumbs in nervousness.

I rolled my eyes, waving the flyer in front of her like a flag.

"I'm here to try out," I said, swinging my hips back and forth.

She levelled me a signature glare, visibly biting the inside of her cheek, "We're full." she said, stalking into the shed.

Trying not to chuckle, I followed my pouting frenemy inside. Where she had miraculously procured a bow and arrow that she held, in the stance of the warrior princess that she is.

"I am THIS close to shooting you," she whispered as I entered the shed. And I noticed she was right. The tip of the makeshift arrow was aimed right at the centre of my forehead.

"Woah, Annabeth," I whispered, taking a step back. My back was against the wall. I knew she wouldn't kill me. But it was still kinda scary.

"What are you...ohh," Grover commented, as he poked his head through the small shed door. He stepped in, moving his hands in a placating manner, "Annabeth, come on. Orange might be your colour, but you could never pull off a jumpsuit."

She ignored Grover, her eyes trained solely on me. I tried to read them, but they betrayed no emotion other than anger. "I hate you," she claimed, holding the bow and arrow a little higher.

"I know. I know," I said. An idea formed in my mind and I smiled, unknowingly.

"Hey Annie?" I said, ignoring her angry stare, "Is that a spider on your shoulder?" I asked.

Okay maybe I miscalculated my genius.

Because with a loud yelp, she released the arrow, which flew straight for me. I ducked instinctively and it attached itself onto the wall with a thud.

A cackling of electricity sounded and I realised, dread lacing my veins, that Annabeth had struck the power box.

————————————————————————

I released the arrow, swiping the invisible aranchid off of myself. That's when I heard it, the slow cackle of electricity.
I felt my stomach drop.
My arrow was attached firmly into the power box.

A flame shot out from it, and the smell of electric malfunction was thick in the air. I ran out of the shed behind Percy, jumping onto the garden grass far from it.

The old wooden structure creeked, and the flames slowly started consuming it.

I heard loud chatter from behind me as everything moved in slow motion.

Coach Hedge led a team of students with a hose to try and save the half burnt structure.

I felt stuck in place. I did that. I burnt down the acrchey shed.

I felt myself shaking, and realised that I was crying. My eyes burnt, not only with the pressure of tears but from the smoke that blew straight onto my face.

I heard Grover's voice call out to me, but I ignored it. Instead, choosing to watch the burning wooden structure.

I felt Percy kneel down next to me, his oceany scent brought back painful memories. He placed his hand on my shoulder and I turned around to face him.

I don't know what came over me. But I slapped him, straight across the face. I would lie if I said I didn't get a small boost of serotonin from the act.

"You ass!l I yelled, rapidly wiping back tears, "look what you made me do!"

"I'm sorry!" he protested, holding his hand on his face.

I knew I was being irrational. It wasn't completely his fault. But I don't care. The second he came back, all the memories and feelings I've spent YEARS suppressing came back. And for that, I wanted to throw him into the burning building.

Coach Hedge came running towards us, swimming his bat and blowing his whistle simultaneously.

"YOU CUPCAKES ARE IN SERIOUS TROUBLE!!" He bellowed, he turned around to find Hazel Levesque, I knew her from English class, and from all the gooey eyes Frank made at her.

"Take them to the principals office NOW!" he told her. She nodded and led me, Percy and Grover to Chiron's office.

On the way, Will Solace, my co-captain for archery, grabbed my shoulder, pulling me back.

"What happened?!" he asked, looking at me for answers.

My gut twisted in shame and I averted my eyes, "I accidentally burnt it down." I said, prying myself away from him and walking back with Hazel.

She patted my back, kindly offering me a handkerchief, "It's alright, the shed was old anyway."

I wiped my tears with it and stuffed it into my pockets as we arrived at Chiron's office.

That's where Hazel left us and Hestia greeted us with a tsk. She ushered us into the room, and we found Chiron looking at us.

"Care to explain what happened, children?" He asked, looking at me specifically.

I bit back another sting of shame, "Sir I...I accidentally shot an arrow into the sockets, caused electrical damage and burnt down the shed," I briefed, "Howver I would like to add, that Grover had nothing to do with it. He was just a bystander."

It pays to be the teachers pet.

Chiron nodded at me, sinking further into his wheelchair, squishing his centaur shaped stress ball. I'd gotten it for him as a Christmas gift last year.

"You may go Grover. But I'm still going to give you detention for today," he said, gesturing the nervous wreck of a boy to leave. And he sprinted out of the room after bleating out an apology.

"Now what am I going to do with you two?" he asked, mostly to himself. Chiron rolled his wheelchair out from behind his desk.

"You do understand that you did severe property damage. You could go to jail for this," he said sternly.

Percy beat me to the reply, "Sir, none of this is Annabeth's fault. It's mine. I scared her into taking the shot. Please don't punish her," he said.

I looked at him, utterly perplexed. Why was he trying to save me? He didn't have to do that.
I pushed that thought and joyful feeling down.
Deep
Deep
Deep
I hated him. I had to remember that.

Chiron shook his head. But I swear to the Holy Gods above that I saw a glimmer of a smile, "I know just what to do with you both." he mused.
