Chapter 3

"Yeah! Get it dad!" cheered on the gangly teen in front of me, as he directed his camcorder at the scene on the billiard table in the middle of the room.

The view he was filming was of my wife Kate on all fours, crouched over the loins of the man who I assumed was the boy's father based on his words. Worst of all, the man wasn't a stranger, but my coworker Zack. He was by far the worst employee in the consulting company I worked for and was also someone that reported to me. But Kate didn't care about that evidently, she just kept her hands and mouth bobbing over his shaft as he moaned appreciably at her efforts.

I don't know how long Hayden and I would have stood there shocked had Connor not been following me without me knowing. "Mommy?" he cried out in confusion.

At that point, the heads of all occupants of the room pivoted quickly to the doorway, where I was quickly picking up Connor and handing him to a flustered Sierra who was rushing to help. That was bad timing for Kate, as evidently Zack was ready to finish, and he ended up shooting all over her ear and hair. Very sexy.

"Go to his room and start packing up his stuff please. Suitcases are in the storage closet next to his room. Make sure you take the big Lego bin too." I told Sierra, and she nodded rapidly and started walking rapidly away with him.

"Cole?" Kate gasped. "Cole!"

I just ignored her and watched the teen struggling to stuff the camcorder into a leather carrying case. I'm a nice guy, so I took the case from him and then took the camera out of his hands before putting it in the case. I didn't give it back though, and just handed it to Hayden instead.

"Cole, stop!" my soon to be ex sobbed.

"Zack, when you put in the request for the sick day today because of a doctor's appointment, I didn't realize it was with my wife," I said bitterly. "Considering how many times you've been sick over the last few months, it does make me wonder if this cure is really working for you though. Kate, you'll be hearing from my lawyer shortly." Spinning on my heel I hobbled slowly away towards my room on the other side of the house. Not exactly the dramatic exit I wanted, but the best I could do at the moment.

"Can I do anything?" Hayden asked in a soft voice as we walked.

"Probably not," I muttered. "Actually, yes. Once we get Connor and I packed up, do you think you could help me load everything up? I don't think I am supposed to be lifting still."

"Of course!"

The storage closet was on the way to my bedroom, and the door was already ajar, so Sierra had obviously been here. There were still three roller suitcases in there, plus a garment bag, and between Hayden and I we got them all to my room. I didn't waste any time, grabbing all my jeans, underwear, socks, and casual shirts and packing them away. Dress shirts, my suits and tux went into the garment bag, and I tossed my shoes into one of the suitcases as well. I didn't plan on coming back, so I was grabbing everything I could.

"Connor is packed up!" Sierra said breathlessly as she stuck her head in the door.

"Perfect. Please get his stuff into the back of my car." I tossed her my keys. "And then get the laundry basket from the laundry room and put that in there too." I had no problem taking our dirty clothes at all. They'd be fine after a trip through the laundry.

"I'll be right back!" stated Hayden as Connor came to join me, sitting on the floor with a lost expression.

"Is mommy alright?" he asked me sadly.

"Mommy is having a few problems," I said as I pulled him into my arms. "But I'm sure she'll be fine. But right now, we're going to get some lunch and then visit Grandma Poppy for a while, okay?"

"Grandma Poppy? Yay!" he screamed excitedly. We spend a lot of time at my mom's place since Kate has been off doing her own stuff. Stuff that evidently includes Zack.

Hayden returned shortly with a bag of frozen peas and handed them over to me. "Put it down your pants, it will help with the pain," she explained before handing me a pair of Advil as well.

With a shrug and a hiss of pain at the pressure, I did what she told me to, while Connor just looked at me in confusion. "Daddy, does your pee pee hurt?"

"Yeah buddy, but I'm taking some medicine, so I'll be okay." I showed him the two pills before swallowing them dry.

"Okay Daddy!" He still looked a little worried. It wasn't often that I was the one who needed to be looked after instead of him.

It didn't take long to finish packing my room up, and soon we were trundling our way out to the car. Thankfully, Kate and Zack never made another appearance, as I probably would have hurt my groin more trying punch Zack in the fucking nose. I made one trip into my adjoining bathroom to splash water onto my face, I was sweating too much and didn't like the feeling. Looking into the mirror, I was surprised to see no tears. I still had no idea why Connor and I hadn't been enough for Kate, but I wasn't going to waste my time finding out. He'd seen enough to last a lifetime, and so had I. My hair was a little messy from laying down for the surgery, but it was an easy fix. I always kept my light brown hair cut short to look professional, and it never needed much care. Combined with my brown eyes, I tried to portray my look as a man who would listen to a client and give them what they needed.

I guess it didn't work out with a wife though.

I rolled everything out to my Acura MDX, and then with Hayden's help got it loaded in the back next to Connor's suitcases that Sierra had put in there. "Do you need a ride home?" I asked Sierra, who had tears running down her face at that point.

She nodded sadly, and I just gave her a brief hug. None of this was her fault, though I know she felt that way.

"What are you doing now?" Hayden asked while Sierra got into the front of the car.

I sighed, thinking about my options. I probably shouldn't be driving, so it had to be close. I didn't want to go directly to my mom's place, and I needed to think of a plan. I also needed to call my lawyer, who had helped me with my prenuptial agreement before the marriage. Kate's father insisted on one, so I had a lawyer of my own to make sure everything looked good. Kate's older brother had crafted one for her since he was a lawyer, and then he and my lawyer went back and forth on it. Now I'd need that lawyer again.

"I'm going to get some lunch with Connor. Then call my lawyer to see when they have an appointment available. I don't want to wait, I need to file now. I don't want anything to do with her anymore."

"Do you mind if I follow you? To lunch I mean. I'm a good ear to listen to. I should make sure you can get there safe too."

"Sure. That's fine. We usually hit up the Stars Diner for their brunch menu." That brought a smile to my face because I could use a completely unhealthy plate of food right now.

"Oh, I love that place! I'll meet you there!"

I was really thankful for the bag of peas, though they made my crotch look like I had a strange disease, it helped with the driving. I dropped Sierra off at her mom's house, with a promise to use her as a babysitter if I needed one, and then headed for the diner. I really felt guilty about her losing her job like that. By the time I got there, Hayden was already sitting in a booth, and I slid Connor in across from her before sitting next to my little guy.

"So, who's hungry?" I asked.

"Me!" cried out Connor happily. I couldn't fault him, this was one of our places to go on weekends, and we were here a couple mornings a month, though always on the weekends. This would be the first time we were here on a Friday, though I expected the food to be just as good.

"Me too, Con-man." That had been his nickname for the last few years from my mom who could never stop herself from spoiling him and his big brown puppy eyes.

"Hello there, my name is Kaia, and I'll be your server today. Can I get you anything to drink?" came a voice from my shoulder. I turned to look and was mesmerized by a pair of bright blue eyes in a lovely face framed by blonde hair pulled back into a ponytail. I vaguely saw her toss a packet of crayons and a paper placemat to Connor while I stared.

"Orange juice please!" Connor said happily, breaking me from my stupor.

"For me too, thanks."

"Just a coffee for me," chimed Hayden.

"Sure thing, coming right up!" she assured us while flashing a smile that showed off a pair of adorable dimples.

Hayden and I both stared at her walking away, appreciating the view. "Well, she doesn't have a ring," Hayden pointed out. "So, are you going to ask her for her number, or should I?"

"She probably gets hit on all the time here, the last thing she needs is another customer drooling over her." I mean, yeah, she was gorgeous, but I doubted she'd take kindly to that.

"You're quite the gentleman. I think you're right though, she probably doesn't need that right now," Hayden agreed. "So, when are you taking your ring off?" She gestured at my finger.

I looked down at my hand, the yellow gold band on my finger almost mocked me. Twisting it slightly, I pulled it off and tucked it into my pocket. "Right now."

"Good! See, your day is already looking better. You met me, obviously the high point, and you have a great kid and the freedom to do what you want to clean up your situation." I could tell Hayden was picking her words carefully so as to not say anything too bad about Kate in front of Connor, which I very much appreciated. "There is even a hot diner waitress now!"

She didn't have to worry about my feelings too much. I wasn't sad. I was angrier that it had been happening with Connor in the house, and for who knows how long? There was no way he was staying with her after that. She barely even saw him as it was, and now she's awake at the same time as he is, and instead of playing with her son she's shooting amateur porn? And it wasn't like I was surprised. Sure, at first when the evening work shift began, I thought it sucked, but I also thought it was a temporary thing. As time went on, I knew there was a decent chance that she was fooling around, but not to this extent. Maybe the fact that we hadn't been close in so long was dulling everything to the point where it didn't hurt.

Moments later, Kaia returned, bringing three glasses of water to go with the orange juice and coffee. "Here you go! Do you know what you want to eat today?"

"Yes please!" Connor was on the ball again. "Please tell mister cooker man I want blueberry pancakes and bacon!"

Kaia's face lit up with that smile again. "We actually have a Mrs. cooker woman today. But I'll let her know that you need extra special yummy pancakes, okay?"

"Yeah! Thanks Kaia!"

"I'm just here for the coffee actually," Hayden stated. "I may not have any other surgeries, but I have to get back and do rounds."

"And you sir?" Kaia asked with a smile.

"Um. I'll have umm. I'll have four eggs over easy, hash browns, bacon, and wheat toast please." I managed to stammer out before I hastily took a sip of water to wash down the embarrassment. I would have ordered more, but I already knew I'd be finishing Connor's pancakes for him.

"Daddy, does your pee pee still hurt? Do you need it kissed and made better?" Conner came through with perfect timing once again, and I spit that sip of water all over Hayden and the table.
