Chapter 21
It was a big help having Heather's parents as Kaia's bosses, because it was a simple thing for her to get the week off. There was a lot to do before her Saturday appointment with the Welch family, and I couldn't help nearly as much as I'd like to because of my work. But I gave her the use of my car and had made an appointment with Miriam at the legal office. I also got her a key to my mom's house, because Kassidy and Kaia were coming to live with us.
Yes, I knew it was fast. We'd only been dating for about six weeks, but the last couple of them she'd already been virtually living with us anyway, and we really were like a little family already. I was confident in asking, and Kaia was happy to accept. We both knew that this wasn't a fling.
She had Heather helping her load up the car at her parents', and then I'd unpack it at my mom's after work. We got another bed for Kassidy, but the little ones were sneaky and more often than not ended up crawling into bed with each other and snuggling. They were so fucking adorable. I knew we'd want and need our own place soon enough, and then the kids would have their own rooms, but I could already tell they'd be fast friends and little Con-man was going to protect his soon to be sister. Yep. I was going to make Kaia my wife, and I don't think anyone doubted it.
But first we had to get past the little sickening reunion. Miriam had her office type up the document that Kaia requested, along with a few minor tweaks, and we went to the Welch house with the whole posse. I was driving, while Kaia sat in the passenger seat with her hand clenched in mine. Kassidy was in her child seat in the back, sandwiched between Heather and Hayden, and all of us were more than ready to jump into action if anything or anyone threatened Kaia.
The Welch estate was in a very high end and exclusive community that we followed the GPS to. Even with the money I got from the divorce, I wasn't going to buy anything in a place like this, they needed hundreds of millions to afford it! The guard at the gate waved us through once we told him we were bringing Kaia French to the Welch estate. Evidently, she was on the guest list already so it was a quick stop. Luckily, he didn't ask about the rest of us that were tagging along.
I pulled the SUV into the circular driveway in front of the ornate brick and stucco mansion and looked over at Kaia. "Are you okay baby? Are you sure you want to do this?"
"No. I need to. I've been living in fear for too long. I want to be able to post online when we're together, or with the kids' birthdays and anything else that comes up. I don't want them to see that and come after Kassidy. I need to get this done. Besides, you're going to be out here making sure I'm safe."
"True! I'm already on their Wi-Fi!" Heather chimed from the back seat. "You were right, they never changed their damned password! They were never tech savvy! Morons."
"And you're good with the Bluetooth connection?" Kaia double checked.
"You got it, sis. No worries, we have your back," Heather assured her.
"Damn right we do!" Hayden growled, hefting her little truncheon. Heather had two cans of pepper spray, and I just had a roll of nickels. I was hoping to feel my knuckles hit Davis in the worst way, and a weapon just wouldn't let me do that.
Kaia leaned over and I pulled her gently into a kiss. "You'll be right outside the door, right?"
"Yeah, I'll be ready." I was going to be protecting my girl with everything I had. "Yell if you need me!"
With a nod, she got out of the car, and carried a sleepy Kassidy and her bear to the front door, ringing the bell and waiting for it to be answered. In the back seat, Heather was playing on her phone and happily muttering to herself. "Yeah, got you ya fuckers!"
In moments, we could hear everything going on inside the house. I rolled down the windows and then got out of the car. With the front door closed, I was going to go stand next to it and be ready. I took my phone out and connected it to Heather's feed so I could watch what was happening too. I wasn't sure I'd hear anything through the heavy wooden door, so this was the safest bet.
The view I had was over Kaia's shoulder as she was sitting in a leather chair facing the Welch's living room, Kassidy in her lap while James looked at her in confusion. The bear she'd brought in was obviously a nanny cam, just so we could keep an eye on everything just in case. James' parents entered the room, all smiles as they came and sat down in a plush leather loveseat. I almost growled out loud as Davis sauntered into the room, a high ball glass with some cocktail in his hand.
"Kaia, it is so nice to see you after all this time," James' mother cooed at her. "And you've started a little family?"
I glanced over at the car and caught Heather's eye. She gave me a thumbs up and a grin. We were live and in color.
"Yeah, this is Kassidy, your granddaughter," Kaia stated.
"Excuse me?" everyone clamored at once, except that fucker Davis who just blanched.
"But we never did anything!" James cried out.
"Of course, not James, you were too busy cheating on me in your shower with Francine. How is she by the way, are you still seeing her?"
"N... No, no. That ended," he stammered with a pout.
"But if James isn't the father, then who is?" Mrs. Welch wondered. She obviously wasn't too bright.
"Davis, would you like to tell them how you raped me, or should I?" Kaia asked sweetly.
"How dare you?" exclaimed the mother.
"Oh please, you all know he's been doing that to girls for years," Kaia protested. "Everyone knows you keep paying people off, and I know damned well that is why his jaw was broken."
Davis looked at her in shock as she reminded him of that. "Who told you?" he croaked out.
"James didn't tell you how he ran into me? We were out to dinner on Valentine's Day, my boyfriend and I, and James thought that would be the perfect time to interrupt and ask me over here. I guess money just doesn't buy manners or class. But we all knew that, right? Anyway, in a funny coincidence, my boyfriend wanted me to remind you what he said when he broke your jaw. Evidently you forgot what he said though. Or did you think you'd be safe?"
"You can't prove anything!" Davis yelled.
"I can, actually. The DNA test would obviously show the relationship, and Heather would corroborate the story of what happened that night. And I guess when you track down all the women who you did this to, and you start listening to them instead of paying them off, there is one thing that seems to be consistent in everyone's story. You gave them a drink, though in my case you only gave me an empty glass with ice cubes, because I never trusted you enough to let you get me a drink. But I guess even the ice was too much huh? Did it come from that blue bag in the freezer that you tell everyone is made from melted snow from Mount Everest or some other bullshit story? Or is it you only use it when you want to take advantage of someone? You can even make a drink right in front of them, with them not knowing the drugs are already dissolved in the ice, huh? How many women did you do it to? Do you even remember the number of women you hurt? Do you care?"
My blood was boiling now. I was aching to burst into the house and rip Davis' head off right now.
"Is that true?" James asked, shocked. Neither of the parents looked shocked at the news. "And you knew!" he screamed at them.
"We might have borrowed a few of those ice cubes when we got some expensive whiskey one time. We woke up a day later," Mr. Welch admitted.
"I can't believe you did this to me!" James roared.
"James, shut up. We were already broken up before your brother did anything. Heather and I saw you in the shower with your ex and it was all over at that point. But the next morning you sure did act the gentleman huh? I wake up, feeling as low as possible and needing support and friendship. Needing help and a ride. But all I got from you was yelling. Do you remember what you called me? Filthy whore? Worthless slut? Does any of this sound familiar? Right after my birthday of all nights? Do you understand why you almost got your ass beat when you made light of that night?"
"Then what do you want from all this?" Mrs. Welch asked bitterly.
"I want a signature." She passed them over the form from Miriam. "This agreement says I won't sue you for the assault or make a claim on the family fortune or claim my daughter as a Welch when it comes to an inheritance. I wouldn't want her to ever be associated with you anyway, so that is easy. In return, you stay away from me. You don't ever make a claim to try and get custody of her in any form at all. I want nothing to do with any of you, ever again."
"That's it?" Davis asked. "I'm fine with that, I don't want a brat anyway!"
Brat? That fucker! If I didn't get him today, I was going to hunt his ass down and pound it into the pavement.
"I need you all to sign. I don't want your parents or James doing anything either," Kaia pointed out.
"You don't trust us?" James asked sadly.
Kaia just laughed at him. "No James, not even a little. This family, for all the money you have, is filth. Just sign it so I can get away from the stench of you all."
Davis didn't even read it, he just signed it quickly and passed it over to his parents. They at least looked it over, but it was a simple two page form that was exactly what Kaia had described, so they signed it too. James, like Davis, just signed and shook his head.
"I'm sorry Kaia, for everything." He passed the document over and Kaia stood with Kassidy and grabbed the bear. It didn't show much anymore, but I could still hear.
"I don't care James, I really don't. You can fuck right off."
The view changed as Kaia picked up the bear and started walking, I could hear the footsteps and assumed she was heading for the front door as quickly as possible.
"Hey, wait!" Davis called out. "I want an agreement too, that you won't go to the police about this!"
"I can't do that Davis." I could hear Kaia through the door now, she must be right next to it. "You see, this bear is a nanny cam, and that conversation was all just live streamed. The police are probably already on their way."
I heard Davis screaming at the same time as I heard the music I wanted. The harmony of distant police sirens mixed with the click of the front door's deadbolt being unlocked.
