Chapter Ten

Renata, while still quite confused with the situation, did what the instructions ordered her to do, heading to the park where she had first originally met James and Harry, along with Sirius. Thinking back to that day where she had brought Enzo to the park in hopes of clearing her mind, it was after getting fired from another job. She believed she was downright cursed at the time, believing that it was impossible for her to keep a job. Then the whole entire situation fell into her lap, with Enzo chasing after Sirius in his animagus form. Just thinking about the whole ordeal brought her to life as she realised just how dysfunctional it had all been.

She remembered apologising to James as he worried that Enzo was going to try and attack Harry at the time and she had tried to establish that Enzo was actually extremely friendly, only to be bitten directly on the face. The sight of her own blood had caused her to faint, making the ordeal so much worse. And yet, despite all the madness that had taken place in such a short period of time, it had led to something amazing. Not only did she get to meet Harry, James, and Sirius, three people that were going to become intricate parts of her life, it started her on a journey of healing that she didn't even know she needed.

Getting the chance to play with Harry all day, she would have never guessed that it would lead to her becoming the boy's nanny, let alone his mother after a while. And spending time with James, she didn't think that it was going to turn into him becoming her employer and then so much more.

"It's funny how life turns out sometimes, isn't it, Harry?" she said as she carried Harry on her shoulders as they reached the park. "This is where I first met you."

Harry let out a tiny gasp, although Renata was convinced he didn't really understand what she was telling him at the time. But he proceeded to gasp and then place his hand on his chest before peering down at her.

"Me?"

Renata gave a shake of her head, internally laughing at how much of a dramatic influence Sirius had on people without realising. Between Harry and Adelmo picking up on the man's dramatic nature, Renata believed soon enough she was going to be dealing with three Sirius'.

Arriving at the park, Renata placed Harry down, having him walk beside her as they started exploring the area. She knew the next clue had to be somewhere but the park was quite large, where was she supposed to look first? Technically, the first place she had met James was during the scuffle between Enzo and Sirius, which was smack dab in the field. Did James really leave the next clue in the middle of the field? There were endless possibilities of something happening to it if he just left it out in the open.

Confused as she walked around in the dead grass that hadn't faired well due to the colder temperatures of the season, Renata didn't see anything. Harry probably didn't even know what they were even looking for and Renata couldn't give him any instruction so that he could help. After a little while, Renata felt like the answer was staring her in the face, but she just couldn't figure it out.

Taking to sitting down on a familiar bench, she placed her chin in her hands before peering out at the landscape. She had to be missing something, but what was it?

"Mummy, look, a ball!"

Peering down, Renata could see that Harry was crouched over, looking under the bench, pointing at something that he had labelled a ball. Thinking he had just found a left behind dog toy, Renata moved to look under the bench as well, only to find a ball purposely stuck to the bottom of the bench.

"What in Merlin's name..."

Pulling the ball off of the bottom of the bench, Renata held it up as she sat back down, only to see that a piece of parchment paper was stuck to it as well. She heard a giggle and looked over at Harry to see that her son was beaming at her with such happiness.

"You're in on this too, aren't you, Harry?"

However, with no answer given, Renata was left with unfolding the piece of parchment for her next clue.

It didn't take long for her to piece together the second clue, knowing she had to head to the markets, although they weren't very much in business during the colder months. But she was sure that James wasn't going to just leave her hanging there. Lifting Harry up, she realised she had to trek all the way back to Diagon Alley after only just leaving there. It seemed that James was sending her on the quite the hunt. However, she was willing to oblige as she continued on towards the markets.

Harry seemed to be really enjoying himself, especially in his mother's company as he giggled wildly in Renata's arms. And when they actually reached the markets, Harry squirmed around until she placed him down again. Then he proceeded to grab her hand so she knew exactly what stand to walk over to.

"Potato soup!" Harry said guiding her over to where the potatoes were out for sale. Renata was about to question where the clue was hidden among the potatoes until the vendor reached out and lifted one out to her with a smile on her face.

Apparently, Harry and Adelmo were not the only ones in on it all.

Renata took the potato, completely bewildered by the arrangement and found another piece of parchment paper attached to it.

Clue number three.

"Hopefully, it won't be in the Toadstool Tales," she read to herself as Harry waited patiently at her side. "Hoppitty hoppitty hop?"

Thinking over the fairytale book that James despised so much as a child that he claimed it made children actually vomit, she remembered that the Toadstool Tales were a series of adaptations of other books. Hoppitty hoppitty hope had come from the adaptation of The Wizard and the Hopping Pot.

"So if it's not in the Toadstool Tales, it would be in The Tales of Beedle the Bard."

Which meant that she was going to have to go home to find the copy on the bookshelf for her next clue hopefully.

"Alright, Harry, I guess we're headed home."

Inside the Potter Cottage, it was completely silent when Renata and Harry arrived and as she looked around upon first coming in, Renata didn't see James anywhere. She had a feeling he wouldn't be there but she had been somewhat hopeful. As she walked into the living room, she approached the bookshelf first, only to find that The Tales of Beedle the Bard copy was sticking out further than the rest of the books. Grabbing it and flipping to the section of the tale of the The Wizard and the Hopping Pot, Renata was presented with her next clue.

"Why would I-"

She was about to question why she would answer the door when she had only just arrived home and found no one there, however, before she could even question it, there was a knock at the front door.

Harry jumped up on the sofa and looked over the back of it with a mischievous grin as Renata made her way over to answer it. Swinging it open, Renata thought it was going to be James, but she found Sirius on the other side, flinching as he believed he was going to be attacked or struck by something within the home. However, as Renata made still, he calmed down seconds later, lowering his arms to his side and straightening himself out.

"Hello, Renny," he said, walking passed her and heading inside, " having a good day so far?"

"Uh, yes," she answered, " although rather confusing, I'll admit. What are you doing here?"

"I'm here to deliver your next clue and to watch over Harry!"

Just as she was about to ask why he needed to watch over Harry, Renata was silenced as Sirius handed her his clue to deliver. Taking yet another piece of parchment paper, Renata opened her next clue.

As Sirius read the clue over her shoulder, Renata turned to him before placing her hands on her hips. "Sirius, do you know what's going on?"

"I know nothing," he informed her, " I'm only doing what I was told to do and that was to deliver this message and watch over Harry for the evening."

"For the evening?" she questioned. "So is it a date night that James has planned? Is that what all the clues are going to lead up to? He's really going all out for this one, isn't he?"

Sirius didn't answer her, but she didn't need him to either as she knew where to find the next clue as she made her way up the stairs of the cottage. Heading to the bedroom, Renata made her way over to James' part of the wardrobe and opened it up to find the mint green jumper that he had allowed her to wear back on their first date. She had worn it many times since then, but she could recall when she first saw it and claimed that she liked the colour because it was "aggressive and precious at the same time."

The jumper had turned out to be a gift from James' mother, Euphemia, who enjoyed unique colours and exotic robes for her family.

Pulling out the jumper, Renata saw a clue tied to the sleeve, leaving her to untie it carefully to not cause any damage to the material.

The stars were not out yet, but Renata had a feeling James was talking about the hammock room where they could always see the starry nights upon the ceiling. She was puzzled by the addition of dressing warmly, but seeing as she had the jumper in hand, she threw it over the rest of her clothing before making her way downstairs again.

Both Harry and Sirius were present, sitting on the sofa, and watching her quietly as she made her way to the back of the house to the hammock room.

Entering the room, Renata made her way over to the hammock and peered inside of it, but didn't find a clue waiting for her. She looked all over the material, but there wasn't any sign of parchment paper, leaving her confused once more. However, as she thought about the last clue, James had told her to watch the stars. Climbing into the hammock, she rested back to peer up at the stars, but still didn't see anything. Had she done something wrong? She was dressed warmly, she was watching the stars, what else was she supposed to do in order to get the next clue.

It took her a solid minute to think it over and come up with something to try.

"Uh, Brilla, Brilla una Stellina?"

Almost instantly, Renata caught sight of movement from the ceiling, believing it was a shooting star moving across the way, but instead, it was a small piece of parchment falling, coming to rest in her hand as she held it out to catch.

James really was going all out for this date.

"Find a mermaid?!"

The last time the two of them had walked the River Thames, they hadn't found any trace of merfolk present and now he was expecting her to find one. It seemed to be asking a lot of her, but she didn't think James was going to set her up for failure, so maybe she would find herself a mermaid and then be presented with another clue. Seeing as though she had to go back out, she could see why Sirius was there to watch over Harry that evening.

Slowly and carefully climbing out of the hammock, Renata returned to the living room before leaving to London. She walked over and kissed the top of Harry's head.

"Behave yourself," she said, only to hear Sirius scoff playfully.

"Don't worry, Renny, Harry will be fine-"

"I wasn't talking to Harry," Renata countered, " I was talking to you. You behave yourself, I know Harry will be fine."

"Oh, ha ha," he replied dryly, " very funny."

The two stuck their tongues out at each other, before Renata started to laugh and made her way towards the door.

"Bye, Mummy!" Harry and Sirius called after her. "Have fun!"

So Renata walked alongside the river, of course, not taking to walking the entire length of the river because that would be absurd. But thinking back to their first date, she remembered the route they took and walked the area that they had walked together. She kept an eye on the water, hoping to find a mermaid, but the waters didn't seem to hold really any life as the surface remained clear of anything.

"Am I supposed to go into the water to find a mermaid? That seems a bit much, considering it's the middle of February. But how else am I going to find a mermaid?"

The last clue seemed to puzzle her the most as she just didn't understand how to find a mermaid. She had never seen one up close, she didn't know very much about them or their behaviours in hopes of bettering her odds of finding one. Going over the clue over and over didn't seem to help much either because it was pretty straight forward with the instructions.

Growing slightly frustrated, Renata threw her head back and let out a loud huff, but she had continued walking which wasn't her brightest move as she walked straight into a lamp post.

Being knocked back, Renata landed on the pavement and prayed that no one had been a witness to such an embarrassing moment. Luckily, no one was around her at the time, leaving her relieved as she swore under her breath while rubbing her backside. Glancing up, she was about to question how the hell she had managed to walking into it, when she froze.

On the lamp post, there was a sticker of a mermaid and attached to it, was the familiar piece of parchment paper.

Had James anticipated her walking into the lamp post? Or had he hoped she would just find the sticker?

"You know, you could have written down mermaid sticker, James," she thought to herself, " mermaid sticker. Would have saved me some trouble and a broken tailbone here. Oh goodness, I'm beginning to sound like Sirius here with the dramatics."

Pushing herself up, she grabbed the clue from the lamp post, leaving the sticker behind.

The connection was instantaneous as Renata could remember dancing with James at Putney's and the two of them were dreadful. Yet, it was so much fun, enough that they playfully insulted one another afterwards. So that was what her next clue meant, she was heading to Putney's and thankfully, her trip down the Thames had brought her close.

Excitement was brewing inside of her because if James had gone through all the trouble of setting up all the clues to lead her to Putney's, she had a feeling she was in for a fun date night. She didn't know what the special occasion was, because Valentine's Day had already come and gone, but maybe James just felt like doing something a little extra.

With it just being a skip and hop over to Putney's from where she was, Renata reached the secret entrace way to the restaurant, to come across her next clue attached to the door. At least that one had been much easier to find after the last two had given her a little bit of a throw.

Opening the door to Putney's, Renata found that the restaurant was completely empty, leaving her somewhat cautious as she entered. She didn't want anything jumping out at her, but as she walked in, there was evidence that someone had been there as all the lanterns were lit. Yet, it remained completely quiet as she walked around.

"Hello?" she called out, but no one answered her, leaving her to look down at the clue once more. "Find the golden snitch?"

So now she had to become a Quidditch player, a Seeker specifically, leaving her to grimace slightly. She didn't think she was very cut out for such a position, but she was willing to give it a go. Since the restaurant was so quiet, she could hear the sounds of the wings fluttering about as the snitch was zooming about. But it moved so fast that when Renata turned in one direction, she could already hear it going the opposite way. How others had managed to catch it while managing a broom, she praised their talents because she did not have the coordination for such a task.

She was just making herself dizzy with turning around so much that it looked like she was dancing drunk. After nearly stumbling over her own feet, Renata stopped and tried to regain her balance only to see the golden snitch hovering right in front of her face.

As fast as she could, she reached her hand out and snatched the snitch from the air, holding it tightly in her hand.

A laugh of relief escaped her as Renata quickly opened her hand to observe it, watching as the wings of the snitch settled and became still. And only seconds later, did the snitch start to morph and open up in her hand.

Inside the snitch, was her final clue.

She heard shifting from behind her, causing Renata to turn around with the question of clue ten still fresh in her head. And as she turned, she watched as James started to appear right before her, kneeling on a floor as a cloak that had been leaving him invisible the entire time unveiled his location. It slid off to the floor, an invisibility cloak, one that Renata had heard many stories of, but that wasn't her main focus at the time.

Her eyes were set on James as he smiled up at her, a ring in hand and suddenly, she understood what the last clue meant.

How do you say "yes" in Italian?
