Chapter Eight
Renata had a plan to when it came to welcoming everyone to the cottage, the adults were manageable with food and drinks, but for the children, she had a very special activity planned out. Waiting for the arrival of the Weasley children and Neville, she and Harry were up early as usual within the cottage, while James slept in. Leone had woken both of them as the kneazle had been struggling quite a bit establishing his new surroundings. He often slept at the end of Harry's bed most days, simply because the toddler didn't move a lot in his lip. There had been way too many occasions where James had accidentally kicked him off during the night, leaving him slightly bitter.
But that morning after Renata woke up, she and Harry headed to a special room that James had designed with the family in mind. Since the weather a lot of the time as too cold in the evenings for them to venture out in the hammock, James had designed a room so that the family could still enjoy their nights of "Brilla Brilla La Stellina." At first, Renata didn't understand what he was talking about but as James guided her and Harry into the room, she found herself unable to breathe for just a few seconds.
In one room, there was a hammock, magically reinforced to take the weight of an army if needed, but above it, the ceiling had been enchanted into the starry night sky. Of course, since Renata had never been to Hogwarts, she didn't know just how much influence the castle had on the decorations and modelling of the home, however, she probably wouldn't have cared either. To see the stars hover over their heads and still feel the warmth of the fireplace that was in the room, she couldn't help herself as she let out a strange noise dedicated to her excitement before wrapping her arms around James in a hug.
Meanwhile, Harry had been stuck in place, standing completely still as he stared up at the ceiling for several moments. He appeared to be in awe, his tiny mouth open after one of his hands reached up to adjust his glasses to make sure he was properly seeing everything.
"I figured this was best to get us through the long winter months," James smiled as he felt an immense sort of pride race through his chest as Renata continued to hold onto him. "Not to mention, at this rate, when Harry finally takes Astronomy at school, he'll be way ahead of the game."
It was perfect and while Renata and Harry were speechless in their own rights, there was no doubt that they adored the room.
So while James slept in that morning, Renata had scooped Harry up into her arms along with Leone to join her in the hammock. It was perfect for storytelling afternoons and cuddling, and sometimes, the hammock gave Harry inspiration for a wild adventure, such as being on a pirate ship in the open seas or travelling through space. But that morning, Harry was perfectly content cuddling into his mother's side as she told him the story of the Tre Porcellini or the Three Little Pigs.
He was close to falling asleep again, appreciating the warmth from Renata and Leone, as his mother's voice remained soothing but that quickly came to an end as James had finally woken up that morning and ventured into the room. He climbed in, still slightly sleeping, but he didn't really like waking up in bed to find the other side empty. Sometimes he wished that Renata would sleep in more, just so he could cuddle with her longer in the morning hours.
"Today is going to be a long day," he yawned as he settled in, " so many people in one place, it'll be like Christmas again."
Renata chuckled as she glanced over in his direction. "Don't worry, I had an idea to keep all the children occupied," she informed him, " so all you have to do is entertain the adults and I think you can manage that."
"Oh, really and what is your idea to keep the Weasley children, Harry, Huxley, and Neville all occupied at the same time?"
"Well, I organised a little hunt for all of them," Renata said with a smile, "this morning, I set out little pieces of gold around the cottage for all of them to find. I didn't put any pieces near the river though, as much as I love it, I don't feel comfortable with them going over there unsupervised at any time."
James could hear the slight quiver in Renata's voice and it had only clicked in his mind a couple of days prior that while Renata loved the scene of the river, there were a couple aspects of it that left her nervous. Such as the fact that she couldn't swim and the river itself was strong enough and deep enough that one would actually have to know how in order to venture into it.
Luckily, there was a long fence along the river to keep the children at bay to head into the river without an adult and Harry would never be far from either of their sights to go anywhere near the water alone. But it did not excuse the fact that James still felt quite determined to teach Renata how to swim, he planned on doing so that summer when the family went to the beach more often.
"So, the children have a treasure hunt planned out for them," James said with a nod of his head, " is it bad that I'm slightly envious of them? I want to join in on it."
"Well, after the children find all the pieces, I'll hide them all again so you can have a treasure hunt," she said in a teasing tone, " maybe will make it a competition between you, Sirius, and Remus."
"It wouldn't be a competition, Ren, we all know I would win!"
The first to arrive was Remus and Huxley surprisingly, usually, Remus was one of the last to show to any family event, simply because it was a battle to get Huxley dressed. When the little boy was home with Remus he was much different than he was in the company of other people. He was so quiet around the others unless it was Harry, Ron, and Neville, but around the adults, he would hide behind Remus until they were gone.
However, that late afternoon, Huxley was the first to enter the Potter household, immediately greeting Harry first before the two ran off to play while waiting for the others to show up.
"Wow, Huxley seems to be in a lively mood," Renata pointed out as Remus entered, wearing a smile of his own.
"I was just saying the same thing to myself," Remus told her, " he's been in such a good mood since he woke up this morning. Maybe it had to do with him visiting with my father over the weekend. They got along great, you should have heard the two of them laughing and Huxley was quite upset when we eventually had to leave. Since then, he's talking way more than he ever did before. He actually asked if he could come over here to play with Harry. That's a first, usually he just waits for me to offer him something and goes along with it. But he asked to come see Harry, he told me what he wanted for breakfast, and...and..."
James glanced over from where he stood, seeing the look on Remus' face, he couldn't tell if it was based on confusion or another emotion that he couldn't quite pick up on. But for a few seconds, Remus simply stood there before looking over at the couple.
"He called me Daddy this morning," Remus informed the two, " I didn't know what to make of it all. I know that I've been the only person to care for him since...since he lost his parents. But to think that he sees me as a father figure..."
"Why wouldn't he?" Renata questioned him in a light tone. "You do everything that a father does for him and more, having to work with his condition. There probably isn't anyone else in this world better tasked to being a father figure for Huxley and I think he knows that, Remus."
"You're right, I guess it just took me by surprise, that's all. This whole situation was only meant to be temporary," he admitted, " but I don't think that's going to be the case anymore, is it? After all, no one has stepped forward from the family of his biological parents. And even if they do, I'm not sure if they are going to be willing to take on such a responsibility. A child is one thing, but speaking from experience, a child with lycanthropy...well...let's just say you can't find advice in a parenting book."
"Most parenting books are biased or outdated anyways, Remus," James interjected, " don't worry about it. You two have all the support you need."
The conversation was cut short by the arrival of Augusta and Neville, with Neville practically pulling on his grandmother's arm to move faster so that he could go play. Once they were fully inside, he pulled away and started calling out Harry's name to figure out where the other boy was in the home. Augusta looked positively exhausted as she damn near collapsed into a chair with a sigh, while James offered a drink.
A drink that she gladly took.
The same could be said for Molly and Arthur when they came in with their group of children, looking quite tired themselves with having to rally up the bunch constantly.
"It's like they never run out of energy," Arthur said as he joined Augusta with a drink, " one of them grows tired and another one will pick up where he left off."
"I don't envy you, Arthur," Augusta chortled, " Neville is normally a quiet boy at home, but there are days where he just cannot for the life of him remain still."
Renata offered to hold Ginny while Molly sat down and let out a tired yawn, talking about how Ginny was up half the night with new teeth coming in. Apparently, she had taken a liking to biting everything that came into her hands. With that in mind, Renata made sure to keep her hands a safe distance from Ginny's mouth as she held onto the girl.
"Can I has Harry?" Ginny asked at one point, leaving all the adults to turn their attention to her with a laugh.
"Oh no," Molly shook her head, " not this again. It's been a never ending battle at home. All we heard coming out of Ginny was something about Harry, cute, until Ron started getting jealous and told Ginny that she couldn't have Ron. Got her all upset, so you know what she did?"
"She cried?" James answered.
"No, she bit him, right on the face," Molly said, " Ron screamed bloody murder and now he won't come anywhere near her. He won't sit next to her at the table and you should see the looks he gives her."
"Well, in his defence," James began, " I wouldn't be particularly fond of someone who bit my face, nor would I risk sitting near them again."
The front door opened again and this time it was Adelmo and Sirius who arrived, bringing some wine as their house warming gift. Adelmo leaned in and kissed his sister on the cheek in greeting, while Sirius walked over as well to greet Ginny.
"Oh, look at all those freckles," Sirius cooed as his finger trailed over the top of Ginny's cheeks, but that was a poor call on his behalf as seconds later, Ginny's teeth were clamped down on his finger, warranting a high-pitch scream.
Sirius pulled his finger back, watching in horror as Ginny clapped her hands and started laughing at his reaction. "She...she...she bit me! And now she's laughing. Is this going to be a common thing? Every time I enter this home something bad is going to happen to me?"
"Well, if you keep on doing stupid things," Adelmo said, bringing his partner to glare at him, " then the guaranteed answer would be yes."
"Al, you're supposed to take my side!"
"I only take the side of common sense."
Once the adults were settled and on the verge of relaxing, Renata organised the children outside, keeping Ginny with her as she was still a bit too young to be keeping up with the rest of the groups. She had them split up into groups of two, to search for the pieces of gold that she told them were hidden around the outside of the cottage. They all seemed relatively excited for the treasure hunt as they were practically dancing in place, eager to be told to start.
Ron and Harry were partnered up, as were Huxley and Neville and Renata reminded the older Weasley boys to play fair and let the younger ones find the gold pieces too. She gave them the signal to go and the children were off to run about, while the adults bundled up and sat outside to observe. It was chaos in the beginning with all of the boys practically crashing into each other in hopes of finding the first gold piece.
But it provided plenty of entertainment for the adults and for Ginny, who would very often yell out "Go, Harry!" from whereever she was sitting.
However, after awhile, none of the boys had turned up any of the gold pieces and Renata was just as confused as they were. With the sun already beginning to set and it growing dark, she wondered as to why they hadn't found at least one, she had left all the pieces in plain sight.
Maybe Harry wasn't the only one who needed glasses.
"Perhaps we should provide them with light," Molly suggested, " they won't be able to see anything soon enough. And knowing my boys they are all too competitive for their own good. They'll fight to stay out there all night."
She went to remove her wand to give them the much needed light, but James stopped her as an idea came to mind.
"I think I know what could make this treasure hunt even more special and give them light at the same time."
Renata found herself curious as to what the suggestion would be but she and the others were given their answer right away as James produced his patronus, a large stag that took form and started moving towards where the children were in the field.
"Come on, Sirius, join in," James prompted, leaving Sirius to grin as he removed his wand and provided his patronus of light, a large dog to match.
Even Arthur joined in on the fun as a weasel followed behind the others, joining to where the children were.
James could see all the little faces light up as they smiled in the direction of the patronuses that moved around them.
"Can I join in the fun?"
He turned his head and saw Renata standing next to him with her own wand drawn, waiting for his approval. James had to admit, he was surprised by the offer, simply because it was never a thought that crossed his mind that Renata could produce a patronus. It wasn't something taught at Hogwarts, it was something he and Sirius had learned during the animagus process and Arthur had admitted that he had learned the spell in order to keep his family safe during the times of war.
It was Molly's older brothers, Gideon and Fabian that had taught him, but then it clicked in James' head where Renata would learn it. She had been training to be an Auror, it would only make sense, but he wondered if she had a corporeal form.
"Of course," he finally answered, realising that he hadn't given his response right away, " go right ahead."
Renata smiled and looked quite excited as she moved her wand about to cast her patronus, James wasn't sure what he had been expecting, but it was safe to say he wasn't expecting the animal that appeared in the darkness.
An octopus.
The octopus moved its way to the ground and moved along carefully through the field, the eight long arms moved about and definitely captured the attention of all the children as they stopped what they were doing.
"You are just full of surprises, aren't you?" James grinned as he pulled her into his side and continued to watch.
He remembered back when he learned that Lily's patronus had been a doe, he had found it to be flattering. But learning that Renata had a patronus all her own and it left him curious as to why she had that specific animal and he realised how much he loved learning something new about Renata, she kept him on his toes.
"I don't understand," her voice brought him out of his thoughts, " I didn't make it that difficult to find the pieces, I left them all in really obvious places."
She started down the steps with James following her, she seemed to be checking on one of the spots where she was sure she had left the gold. Only to see that it was gone, leaving her to put her hands on her hips.
"What is going on? Where is all the gold?"
"Ren, it's alright," James chuckled placing his hands on her shoulders as she grew visibly upset, " it's possible that the animal came by and took the pieces."
"Oh no!" she cried out. "I didn't want that! I thought it would be special for all the boys to have pieces of authentic leprechaun gold."
Suddenly, James froze and he tried to register what she had just said, trying to hold back his laughter.
"Ren, did you say leprechaun gold?"
"Yes, there was a man selling the pieces in Diagon Alley and I thought it was the neatest thing. We don't have leprechaun gold back in Italy so I thought it would be a wonderful surprise...why are you laughing?! It's not funny, James!"
James really couldn't help himself but as she continued to grow further upset, he pulled her into a hug as he started laughing.
"Oh, Ren, it was a wonderful idea, but darling, I need to tell you the sad nature of leprechaun gold..."
A/N: Thank you, pychohale for the wonderful family picture! And unfortunately, no one guessed Renata's patronus, but that's alright. But once you learn about octopus, I find them to be very fitting for Renata's character, while they aren't highly known, they are actually some of the most dedicated mothers in the animal kingdom. :)
