Knock, knock, knock.
"Hinata-san, Hinata-san; are you there?"
Bowing your head, you closed your eyes and waited for a sign--anything to confirm the rumors you'd heard about a ghoul haunting one of the old girls' bathrooms at Karasuno. The only sound you could hear was that of your heart thumping in your chest with anticipation, however, and the longer you stood in quietude, the louder your doubtful thoughts became. You probably looked totally delusional right now, but that was fair. You were trying to find a ghost who allegedly granted wishes of the desperate, hopeless students like yourself, after all.
Suddenly, a click sounded and the stall door in front of you creaked open just enough for you to see the shiny base of the chipped, porcelain toilet inside. However, when you pushed the door open, there was nobody there.
"Here I am!"
A squeal of surprise escaped from your lips at hearing a voice sound from somewhere behind you. When you whirled around to find the person who had spoken, you came face to face with a... floating boy?
"Pervert!" you cried, trying to cover your body with your arms, even though you were fully dressed in your school uniform.
"Wha? No!" the boy spluttered, waving his hands madly, "It's me! Hinata-san!"
Your (e/c) eyes widened with shock as you looked up and down his shorter than average figure, noting his fiery orange hair, and his uniform that you'd seen in older pictures of previous classes throughout the school's history. "Y-You're a guy?!" you uttered rather stupidly, since that was glaringly obvious now. He nodded enthusiastically. "Are you sure you're not a pervert? This is the girls' bathroom."
Balling his hands up into fists, he argued, "This used to be the boys' bathroom back in the day, ya know!" With a loud, exasperated sigh, he groaned, "Why does everyone who comes in here to ask for help think I'm a girl, for crying out loud?"
"Because you're in the girls' bathroom!"
"It was the boys' bathroom before!" Not wanting to give you the chance to say anything else that might launch the two of you into another disagreement, the ghost quickly asked, "Anyway, didn't you summon me for something? What's the deal?"
Taking a deep breath, you finally locked eyes with the ghost before you and admitted, "I need help getting a boy to like me."
A grin spread across his lips. "Oooh! Who is it?" You opened your mouth to answer, but he ended up cutting you off by interjecting, "Wait, who are you? My name's Hinata Shouyou, but call me Hinata-kun, since apparently Hinata-san makes everyone assume I'm a girl."
To answer his questions, you introduced yourself to him in return and explained your rather tragic situation. The boy in your class whom you had a crush on didn't even seem to realize that you existed. He never really spoke to you or even turned your way, and your attraction to him made it extremely challenging for you to muster the confidence to approach him. Though, his constantly serious expression didn't necessarily help either.
"Kageyama Tobio, huh?" Hinata repeated after you said the name of the boy you so desperately wanted to fall in love with you, "From what I've heard by, you know, floating around, he's the setter for the volleyball team, right? I'm pretty sure I've seen him before and he really doesn't look all that interesting, (l/n)-chan."
A blush rose to your cheeks as you huffed, "I can't really explain it, but I just really like him, okay? And I want him to like me back, so will you help me? Please?"
He watched you for a moment with his bright, brown eyes before saying, "Okay! For a small price, I can offer you access to this sacred text I have here!" His hand disappeared in his uniform jacket and emerged with a large book titled, Notice Me, Senpai! How to Snag the Man of Your Dreams!
Your face instantly fell. "What the hell is this?"
He scoffed, "The answer to your prayers! You're welcome!"
Unintelligible sounds came out of your mouth as you tried to wrap your head around the situation. This was going nothing like how you'd expected, and you weren't happy about it. "I-I thought you were going to go and just, I don't know, tap him on the head and cast some spell on him to make him fall in love with me!"
"I'm not a fairy! Besides, manipulating him would cost you an arm and a leg!"
"Above or below the elbow and knee?"
"You sound way too serious about that!" The unwavering expression on your face made him shudder noticeably, and he turned his attention away from you to thumb through the pages of the book he'd retrieved. "Hey, this book's not half bad! Come over here and read it with me so we can figure out what to do first!"

OPERATION: VENDING MACHINE
Notice Me Senpai! says: "First things first: Find a way to start a conversation with your crush!"
As you were sitting peacefully in your classroom, eating lunch and scrolling through funny videos on social media, Hinata suddenly appeared beside you--as he tended to do, since he was an apparition. "(L/n)-chan!" he exclaimed, nearly making you choke on your food and fall out of your chair.
Your fellow classmates took notice of your sudden disturbance and sent concerned looks your way, since, to them, you'd just freaked out for absolutely no reason. A nervous laugh echoed from your throat as you coughed out, "Just a... spider!" They immediately turned away and started talking about you, but you weren't as worried about what they said as you were about what Hinata had to tell you. "What is it?" you hissed under your breath.
"There's a situation by the vending machine! Grab your wallet and follow me!" he announced, his brown eyes glittering with excitement. You obliged, gathering your money and rushing through the hallways after him, weaving between the clusters of students milling around. God, would it kill him to slow down a bit? you thought before realizing, Oh, that was kinda morbid.
Once you'd arrived at one of the doors leading outside and between buildings, Hinata came to a halt and pointed out your crush standing in front of the vending machine, blue eyes fixated longingly on the drink options illuminated behind the thick wall of glass. "What's going on?" you whispered, glancing over at the boy floating beside you.
"Looks like your crush forgot to bring his wallet to school today and can't buy the drink he wants!" Hinata explained. However, as he continued to watch Kageyama's unmoving figure, he questioned, doubt lacing his tone, "Are you sure you like this guy? I mean, he's been staring at the milk carton in there for the past five minutes." A scathing look you sent his way was enough to convince him to change his tone. "Okay! The sacred text says you must be--" he paused to reference its colorful pages for a moment-- "calm, confident, and concise, so you leave him wanting more! Got that?"
You nodded and swallowed the lump of nervousness in your throat before taking your first, shaky steps towards your crush. Halfway through the short journey, you took a deep breath to collect yourself, and brushed off the nerves you felt. Your confidence was about to be totally fake, but as long as he didn't notice that, you could get away with it.
Casually, you approached the vending machine, wallet in hand, and paused alongside him, pretending to examine the goods behind the glass. "Oh, hey!" you chirped, bringing his cobalt gaze to you, which, in turn, made your heart skip a beat.
"I wasn't looking at the milk, or anything, you have it all wrong." The words shot out of his mouth at a faster speed than you could process, so you were left staring at him in shock, not really sure how to respond. Your silence seemed to make him even more flustered, and he shoved his hands in his pockets before turning around and starting to shuffle away.
"K-Kageyama-kun!" you called after him, giving him pause, "I was about to buy something, so if you want a drink as well I can get it for you."
He was back by your side in an instant. "Really?"
A chuckle bubbled in your throat as you nodded reassuringly at him before turning to face the vending machine. After inserting some money and selecting the drink you wanted, he pointed out the carton of milk he'd had his eyes on so you could punch in the appropriate numbers. Once the two of you had retrieved your respective drinks from the bottom of the machine, Kageyama quickly opened his and took a gratuitous mouthful.
"Thanks," was his only response.
"No problem!" you said with a smile. An awkward silence ensued between the two of you as you stood together for a moment, enjoying your beverages, and Hinata's words rang in your head. Leave him wanting more... You had to make your exit, now, but how? There were many, much cooler ways you could've gone about doing this, but, the jitters had caught up to you. "Well, see ya tomorrow!"
He didn't even have the time to react before you sped off, making a beeline for the building once again.
"Are you dumb?! You're in the same class! You're literally going to see him again in fifteen minutes!" Hinata's shrill voice echoed from beside you as he floated along nearby.
"It's okay!" you panted, a grin forming on your lips, "Maybe he'll notice me now!"
Hinata's copper-colored eyebrows furrowed at you as he sighed, "Both of you guys are total weirdos."

OPERATION: LUNCH BUDDY
Notice Me Senpai! says: "Is your crush a loner? Find a way to keep him company!"
Even if Kageyama did take note of the fact that the strange girl who had bought him milk and then run away from him was in the same class, he didn't show it. At all. He did, however, plop your pencil case onto your desk when you dropped it. That was only one time, though. And that was also three days ago. And he hadn't made eye contact or said anything to you when he'd done it.
So, Hinata decided to offer you another tidbit of advice from the "sacred text" at seeing another window of opportunity. In the shade of a tall tree outside of the building, he divulged more information to you. "I feel like you're the weird type that kinda stares at your crush a lot, so I probably don't need to tell you this, but Kageyama eats lunch by himself outside by the benches on the other side of the building," he explained, crossing his arms in front of his chest as he hovered above the bench where you sat with a forlorn expression on your features.
"I do not do that."
"Literally saw you staring yesterday!"
Taking a deep breath, you groaned, "Can you, like, help me, or what?"
"Okay!" He clapped his hands together and closed his eyes for a moment before regarding you with a confident gaze. "I think you know what you have to do! Go find him and try to sit with him!" When you hesitated and allowed the pure fear you felt to show on your face, he floated up into the air, spreading out his arms and legs. "You got this!" he cheered, trying his best to motivate you.
His jumping and dancing around made your heart warm slightly, and you balled your hand up into a fist as you leapt up from the bench. "I can do this!"
More questioning glances were sent your way, but Hinata hyped you up even more by shouting, "Now, go get him!"
He followed you as you rushed back inside, heading to your classroom once more with a renewed sense of confidence. Grabbing your lunch, you headed over to the other end of the building, where you already knew Kageyama liked to spend his lunchtimes by himself.
When you were nearby, you paused for a moment to straighten out your uniform and smooth down your (h/l), (h/c) hair before taking a deep breath and walking over to the bench. Your (e/c) eyes watched Kageyama, who was seated quietly in the shade, his blue eyes trained on his phone and his earbuds fitted snugly in his ears.
"Ah, Kageyama-kun!" you called out to him, waving your hand to grab his attention. However, he was too transfixed by his phone screen to notice, and didn't lift his head until you mustered the strength to tap his shoulder.
"Huh?" he grunted, gently tugging one of his earbuds out of his ear and glancing over at you for a moment.
"Um," you stammered, "D-Do you mind if I eat lunch with you?" He didn't give a verbal response, but moved his bento aside to make room for you. A blush rose to your cheeks as you seated yourself next to him and started digging into your own food. "What are you watching?" you wondered quietly, eyes shifting over to his phone.
"A volleyball game between Aobajohsai and Shiratorizawa that happened yesterday," he answered.
"Oh, cool! Mind if I watch too?" His gaze flickered over to you, and he unplugged his earbuds before moving his phone closer to you, allowing you to watch with him. "Oh!" you gasped at seeing one of the players--a tall, olive brown haired guy that looked extremely intimidating--score an ace with his serve. "The ball moved so fast I couldn't even see it!"
In between sips of milk, he explained, "That's Ushijima Wakatoshi. He's a third year and the ace of Shiratorizawa. He's also left-handed."
You nodded and asked more questions that he answered as the two of you sat together and watched the game. From where he floated off in the distance, Hinata gave you a thumbs-up and disappeared, leaving the two of you to chat and enjoy your lunch together.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After spending lunch with him once and showing your genuine interest in volleyball, Kageyama had started telling you about the games he was going to watch during lunch and asking if you wanted to sit with him. So, the two of you had shared time together during your breaks in school and had gotten to know more about each other, much to your satisfaction. For once, it felt like things were finally starting to go your way. Now, all you needed to do was secure a date with him, but you were worried that maybe Kageyama only thought of you as a friend, rather than as a love interest.
Hinata seemed to sense your doubts, since he appeared one day while you were making a trip to the vending machine during lunch. "(L/n)-chan!" he called, drawing your attention to where he had decided to hover nearby, "Things are going pretty good between you and Kageyama-kun, right?"
Though he wore a bright smile on his face, you couldn't help but feel your heart sink slightly in your chest. "I mean, we're talking more, but I don't think he's ever going to make a move," you admitted, grabbing your drink when it clanked against the bottom of the machine. Walking over to him and plopping down onto a bench, you sighed, "Isn't there anything else that I can do to make him like me more, Hinata-kun?"
He shook his head and waggled a finger, pulling the book out of his jacket once again and saying, "No! The sacred text says, and I quote, Be persistent and patient. Be sweet, but not desperate. Give him time!" With his point made, he snapped his fingers, making the book vanish into thin air. "Just be yourself!"
"What if this doesn't work?" you questioned, (e/c) eyes full of uncertainty as you watched him.
There was a hopeful glint in his eyes despite the worry you felt welling up inside of you. "What if I told you it already has worked?" Before you could even open your mouth to form a response, Hinata laughed heartily and mentioned, "Y'know, I do usually take something important from my clients as payment for helping them, but, from you, will you just promise me something?"
Somehow, even though you were completely dumbfounded, you managed to nod and utter, "What?"
A tinge of pink colored Hinata's cheeks as he requested, "Promise me that even after you get what you want, you'll still come to the bathroom to summon me so we can talk!"
The nature of his wish shocked you, since you were sure he was going to ask for something much more valuable after the amount of time he'd spent with you. But, you were glad to oblige, nevertheless. Smiling, you told him, "I promise!"
"Yes! It gets so boring being trapped in a bathroom by myself unless someone comes to talk to me!" You chuckled at hearing his excitement, but your heart started to race once more when he said, "Now, go back to Kageyama-kun!"
He promptly disappeared, and you practically sprinted back over to where you had been sitting with your crush. Sure enough, at the end of lunch, the raven-haired setter gathered up enough confidence to ask you, "H-Hey, (l/n)-san. Uh... I don't have practice today... so... do you maybe wanna... uhh... walkwwithmeafterschool?"
Heart filled to the brim with joy, you beamed at him as you answered, "Of course!"
And even though he was gone for now, you acknowledged your former, hidden helper with a silent thought:
Can't wait to tell you all about it tomorrow, Hinata-kun!
