Your friend singing tipsily to the music from the show on her TV as she poured herself another glass of wine made you chuckle despite your sad state of affairs. One hand held an empty glass that she gladly refilled for you while the other gripped your phone as your thumb swiped left again and again. With a sigh of dismay, you handed your phone to your friend and took a gratuitous drink of wine.
"Are my standards low or is he kinda cute?" you wondered.
Your friend spent less than a second looking at the face of the man in question before dramatically swiping her finger left across the screen, sending his little face fluttering away. "Girl, your standards just dropped to a new level. What the heck are you doing on this stupid dating app?"
"I told you, my sister's getting married this weekend and I have to find a date or else she'll think I'm a social recluse and shun me from my maid of honor duties at the wedding," you groaned, pulling the blanket you and your friend shared up so it was covering your face.
Your friend rolled her (e/c) eyes and said, "Well you're not gonna find a date on there, silly!"
"(Friend's name), it's literally called a dating app. That's the only thing it's used for," you said, furrowing your eyebrows at her.
She poked you with a chocolate bar she had picked up on her way back from the kitchen. "You got me there." Wrapping her knees beneath herself on the plush couch, she added, "But what I meant is that you should just go out instead. I know it's not really your thing, but you never know who you might bump into at the bar or whatever."
You narrowed your (e/c) eyes at her and confirmed, "You're right: it's not really my thing. So, I'm not doing it."
With a loud huff she grumbled, "You are so stubborn, (f/n)! But, fine. If you're not gonna go out and meet anyone then I guess I'm just gonna have to play matchmaker here."
Your head felt like it was moving in slow motion when you turned to look at her, thanks to the alcohol. "Play matchmaker?"
She nodded, a devious smile on her lips. You were now worried.

"(F/n)! Where are you going? I still need emotional support!"
A look of annoyance crossed your face for a moment as you took a deep breath before turning to face your sister with a strained smile. "Just to get some fresh air. I'll be back in a second." You gave her a little wave and marched out of the bridal suite, the skirt of your emerald green dress flowing around your legs. God, she drives me insane sometimes... but I love her, you thought.
Contrary to what you'd told your nosy sister, you weren't going to get fresh air. You were going to find your date, who had texted you saying he was waiting by the entrance to the gardens where your sister's wedding was set to take place. After receiving confirmation from your friend earlier in the week that her cousin would be willing to attend as your date, you'd barely heard a peep from the guy aside from a few questions about the wedding. Because of this, you were really curious to see who your matchmaker friend had paired you up with.
Your palms were sweating profusely as you made your way to the entrance. Meeting new people was always so awkward for someone as shy as yourself, and you were worried about possibly scaring him off or about things going horribly wrong. When you arrived at the entrance, you said brief hellos to guests arriving, but your eyes soon became fixed on a tall figure in a sand-colored suit standing by himself, his brown eyes scanning his surroundings. Damn.
After taking a deep breath, you approached the handsome fellow and asked sheepishly, "Are you Tooru?"
You noticed his eyes widen slightly upon seeing you before a warm smile graced his features. "Yes. (F/n)?" His silky voice sounded like melted chocolate tasted: heavenly. A nod from you confirmed his guess and he continued, "Nice to meet you. You look stunning."
His compliment set your cheeks blazing and you brushed a loose strand of (h/c) hair away from your face. "Thank you. You look great too," you murmured. Regaining you composure, you grabbed the skirt of your dress and sighed, "Listen, I wish I could walk in with you, but I'm the maid of honor to a very high maintenance sister, so I won't be able to sit with you until the reception. Hopefully we can talk more then?"
He nodded understandingly and assured you, "No worries. I look forward to our reunion."

Following a flawless ceremony that went off without a hitch, as you and your sister had worked meticulously on the wedding, you found your date in amongst the gathering of guests so you could walk to the dining room together for the reception. He politely offered you his arm, and you accepted despite the fact that your heart was racing. You couldn't believe your friend, pairing you up with this handsome cousin of hers she had never mentioned before.
Once the reception had begun and waiters were making their way to the tables around the room, you decided to ask your date a burning question. "So, Tooru," you began, turning to meet his gaze, "why did you agree to this in the first place?"
"Originally, because I owed (friend's name) a favor," he answered, brushing his brown, feathery hair away from his face, "But, after she sent me a photo of you, I couldn't say no to being in the presence of a beautiful woman like yourself."
Oh, (friend's name), you're such a dick, sending him a picture of me but keeping me guessing, you thought with a chuckle as you took a sip of the wine that had been served to you. Aloud, you responded, "Ah, she said you would do this."
He raised an eyebrow. "What?"
"Flirt with me pretty much right after you'd met me."
He placed his hand behind his head as a slightly embarrassed smile overcame his lips. "Oh. Well, what can I say? I know what I like and I don't like wasting time."
A blush crept onto your cheeks again and you said, "I appreciate your honesty." You turned away slightly, and, in a quieter voice, followed up with, "And I can't say I'm opposed." You hoped he couldn't see your body practically shaking with nervousness or the sweat you were leaving behind on everything your hands touched as you tried your best to play it cool.
His eyes searched for yours, finding them when you gathered the courage to look over at him again. "Well, if our feelings of attraction are mutual here, then why don't we get to know more about each other and just call this a first date?" he suggested with a small smile.
"Sure," you agreed.
So, over delicious food and a carefully paced amount of drinks, you and Tooru conversed about a variety of different topics. Despite your nerves and generally horrible conversational skills, you found him so easy and delightful to talk to. There was something about him that made you feel reassured, as if the sound of his voice just wrapped you in a metaphorical blanket each time he spoke. Your personalities were markedly different--he was obviously a popular pick throughout his schooling while you preferred to stay out of the limelight--but you didn't feel all that dissimilar to each other. He seemed to be what you needed to break out of your shell and start opening up again.

Later on in the evening, the buzz of alcohol in your system had brought out a strangely competitive side of you during your sister's bouquet toss. When the event was announced, you simply turned to Tooru and stated, "I'm not getting married anytime soon but I want those stupid flowers!" before trotting over to the dance floor and placing yourself in amongst the other single women.
With anticipation, you watched your sister prepare to toss her bouquet. When the flowers flew, you reached upwards as far as you could, and an extra hop got you high enough to grab them. "Yes! I am victorious!" you shouted with triumph as you pumped your fists. Upon seeing everyone staring at you, including your date from where he sat at the table nearby, you wiped the intense look off your face and cleared your throat. "I mean... yay!"
"Pace yourself, sis!" your sister shouted from where she stood a few feet away.
Everyone burst into good-hearted laughter before cheering for you. Being the center of attention, you felt like you were going to scream from pure embarrassment if you stayed in the room much longer, so you ran back to your seat, grabbed Tooru's hand, and made a hasty exit. Once you'd found a small gazebo to sit in outside and had a moment to regain your breath, you turned to Tooru and said, "Please disregard how I acted just moments ago."
With a bright smile, he asked, "Why? I've played volleyball my whole life and spent my fair share of years screaming my heart out in games. What makes bouquet tosses any different?"
You giggled and flopped down onto the bench, kicking off your heels and taking a long breath. "So," you began as he sat down beside you, stretching his arm out on the side of the gazebo behind you, "would you like to go on another date with me? It's okay to say no, by the way. That's what everyone else has said before."
"How foolish of them." Tooru's comment made you turn to regard him with a gentle gaze. The assured look on his face made you feel at ease, which was a new feeling for you when in situations similar to this one. "I would love to go on another date with you, but this one's not over yet." With a small smile, he pressed his lips against your forehead gently. "Now, why don't you rest your head on my shoulder, (f/n)-chan? You look so tired. That bouquet toss really took you out, didn't it?"
"It did," you chuckled and moved closer to him so that you could rest your head against his shoulder. The soft material of his suit jacket brushed against your cheek and you couldn't help but breathe in the scent of his cologne. His little nickname for you didn't go unnoticed, and you commented, "(F/n)-chan? That's new."
"Do you like it?" he asked, his arm moving to wrap around you and pull in closer.
"Yeah, I do."
"Good."
