The refreshing aroma of coffee filled your senses as you stood near the brewer tapping your foot impatiently. When the steady dripping of the liquid came to a halt, you gave it some time to cool before grabbing your mug and lifting it to your lips. Your (e/c) eyes flitted back and forth over your lesson plan as you took a moment to remind yourself what exactly you were supposed to be teaching your little kindergarteners today. After having a two-week long break, your brain was a bit more relaxed than usual.
"Excuse me," a gentle voice called from behind you, nearly making you spill your coffee. When you turned towards the door of the teachers' lounge, you noticed an unfamiliar man standing in the doorway. "Sorry, to disturb you; I just wanted to introduce myself." You were immediately drawn to his handsome and unique appearance with his gray-colored hair and friendly brown eyes. He was dressed nicely in a gray sweater over a button-up shirt tucked into a pair of black slacks. Placing his shoulder bag on a nearby chair, he approached you and extended his hand, saying, "My name's Sugawara Koushi. I'm a new teacher here."
"A-Ah, you're the man everyone's been talking about!" you responded and quickly set your coffee down on the counter so you could shake his hand. "I'm (l/n) (f/n)."
With a bright smile, he commented, "I've heard great things about your class. Apparently it's one of the best kindergarten classes in this whole area."
A blush quickly rose to your cheeks. "That's such high praise!" you gasped and waved off, not wanting to seem full of yourself. Once you'd collected yourself, you said, "I mean, I think I just happen to get intelligent kids every year. These kids are smart, let me tell you."
Unfazed by your flustered response, he chuckled and said, "Well, it's an honor to meet you and work alongside you, (l/n)-san."
"Likewise," you replied softly before taking another sip of your coffee, "We're always grateful to have a new addition to our school, especially at a weird time like this."
The teacher whose class he was taking over had switched to another school in a huff before the break after claiming he would be paid better elsewhere. He was a greedy, old man whom you'd never liked to begin with, so you'd been glad to see him go. But you were even happier now that you'd met his replacement.
Sugawara nodded slowly, his brown eyes glancing down at his bag. "Speaking of that, I should probably try to finish setting up my classroom while I have the time," he sighed.
"Do you need help?" you offered quickly.
A small smile graced his lips once more as he picked up his belongings. "I appreciate your offer, but I'm sure you have important things to get to as well, so I don't want to keep you. If you ever need me, you know which room to find me in." He sent a playful wink your way that made your heart thud uncomfortably in your chest.
"Shit..." you whispered when he'd left the room, your hand moving to your chest as if to soothe your racing heart. How were you supposed to focus knowing he was only a couple classes down the hall from yours?

For the first week of Sugawara's new job at the school, the two of you shared casual conversations every now and then, since the last thing you wanted to do was come on too strongly and raise suspicions. Each time you spoke to him, however, you found yourself growing more and more interested in him, since he was such a kind and genuine man. They were rare to come across these days. Aside from being caring and considerate, he was also ridiculously handsome, and you found it challenging to keep yourself from staring whenever you saw him pass by.
As your friendship developed, you noticed he would come and visit you in your classroom during lunch if you'd opted to sit at your desk instead of in the teachers' lounge. "(L/n)-san!" he would chirp and knock on your open door, "Mind if I join you?"
You always accepted and pulled up a chair next to your desk for him to sit in, appreciative of any time you got to spend with him. As the two of you sat together and ate, he would ask you about your day and your little students. In return, you would show him some of the work you had put on display and explain how much joy it brought you looking at their projects. Your passion for teaching was very apparent in these moments, and, unbeknownst to you, it made his heart warm. He also admired how quickly you sprung into action whenever one of your students needed you.
One day, your lunch with your fellow teacher had been interrupted when one of the little girls in your class had come running into the room. "(L/n)-senpai!" she cried, "Oikawa-kun got hurt on the playground! Can you please help?"
Immediately tossing your food to the side, you leapt up from your chair. Part of what had inclined you to act so quickly were your inherent maternal instincts. The other part that had motivated you was the complaining you knew you were going to hear from the child's dad, Tooru, when he came to collect him from school. Tooru happened to be a longtime friend of yours from high school who placed his son in the school specifically because you taught there, and you hated imagining the look of horror that would be on his face when he saw his precious son all battered and bruised.
Sugawara had instinctively followed you to offer assistance as you rushed out of the classroom with the little girl so she could show you where the incident had taken place. Upon your arrival, you saw the boy sitting against the side of a slide at the center of a small crowd of children. Blood spilled down his face from a cut in his forehead. "Sugawara-san, could you help move the kids somewhere else?" you requested as you rolled up your sleeves and opened the first-aid kit you'd grabbed on your way. He set to work, assuaging the concerned children and herding them away from the scene of the accident. "Hey, Oikawa, what happened?" you asked the boy gently.
"I was playing on the climbing thing over there, but I fell and hit my head," he answered quietly, tears mixing with the blood on his face.
Taking a tissue, you wiped away his tears and cleaned away some of the blood before taking the appropriate measures to disinfect and bandage up his wound. While he looked slightly pale, he didn't appear to be too traumatized or unsteady. "Come on, let's go to the office so we can call your father, okay?" you suggested, patting his shoulder and offering him your hand. Timidly, he latched onto it and walked with you to the office.
After the incident had been handled, and Tooru had come to sit with his son and do damage control, you reconnected with Sugawara, who had been waiting in the hallway. "Way to act quickly there, (l/n)-san," he commented, making a relieved smile spread across your lips, "You have a way with kids."
"Thanks for your help, Sugawara-san."
"Looks like we make a good team."

After Sugawara's first few weeks at the school, you were getting antsy. As much as you wanted to ask him on a date, you couldn't find the courage or an appropriate time to do it. He was a popular man, it seemed, and some of your other female colleagues had taken to his handsome appearance and warm personality as well. But you couldn't deny that there seemed to be a connection between you two. You just hoped it wasn't one-sided. Eventually, when your emotions started feeling too hard to hide, you decided to approach him sometime after all your students had been collected by the respective parents or caregivers. Hopefully, his kids wouldn't get picked up sooner than yours or he'd still be hanging around after your classroom had cleared.
"Do you have any eights?"
"Nope. Go fish."
Oikawa picked up a card from the deck, his nose scrunched in annoyance as his brown eyes scanned the mass of cards he held. Needless to say, he wasn't very good at this game, even though you'd played it with him countless times to take his mind off the wait for his dad.
"(F/n)-chan!" a familiar voice sang from the doorway, drawing your attention to your friend, "Glad to see my son isn't all busted up today!" His tone was joking, and his brown eyes watched the child as he rushed to get his backpack and grab onto his father's hand.
"That was one time, Tooru," you grunted with dismay.
He scoffed, "I'm teasing. I know he's a little troublemaker."
With a dry chuckle, you commented, "Apple doesn't fall far from the tree, does it?"
"Nope. He's definitely my kid."
The two of you shared a good laugh before exchanging goodbyes when he walked back through the door, leaving you alone. Sighing, you set to cleaning up your classroom as quickly as you could so you could rush over to Sugawara's and ask the question that had been burning a hole in your brain for the past few weeks. However, it seemed he had already found you, since it wasn't long before you heard his voice fill the room.
"(L/n)-san!"
You whirled around, quickly adjusting your (h/l) (h/c) hair when some of it flew ungracefully into your face. "Sugawara-san! Hi!"
He regarded you with a bright smile as he walked into your classroom and took a quick glance around. "Have all of your students been picked up already?" he questioned, his brown eyes fixing on yours.
"Y-Yeah! The last one just left a minute ago," you replied. You were surprised your heart hadn't burst out of your chest yet with how hard it seemed to be beating in an attempt to escape.
"Great." He shoved his hands into his pockets, and you noticed his demeanor become slightly more nervous than usual. "So, does that mean you're free to grab a bite with me?" His lips looked so cute when they were pursed together in anticipation.
Feeling warmth rush over you, you tried your best to curb your overwhelming excitement when you answered, "I'd love to."
