A Team Effort {Azumane Asahi} (Request)

Our dear Asahi tries a dating app.

Requested by anonymous

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was springtime. Love was in the air. Everywhere Asahi looked, he saw couples snuggled up together, and each one he spotted was a painful reminder of how single he was. Normally, he didn't give relationships much thought. He was a busy guy with volleyball and lots of homework on his plate. But, he couldn't help but feel a twinge in his heart every time he saw happy couples walking hand in hand.
His internal struggle showed at practice, leading Daichi and Suga to approach him as the team worked on putting away all the equipment. "What's up, Asahi? Haven't seen you this glum since you hit the ball out on game point during our scrimmage last month," Daichi asked, looking at his preoccupied friend with concern.
Asahi smiled weakly as he untied the knots holding the net around one of the poles. "It's nothing. Don't worry about me," was his gentle response.
"Come on, we know when something's wrong," Daichi pressed, crossing his arms in front of his chest.
"It's nothing, really," Asahi reiterated with a gentle wave, as if trying to shoo away Daichi's worry.
Daichi glanced over at Suga, who had his eyes closed as he let out a long sigh. The gray-haired setter rolled up the sleeves of his jacket, cracked his knuckles, and approached his giant of a friend. "Asahi," he spoke gently and bowed his head slightly, making Asahi's eyebrows furrow in a mixture of worry and confusion. Less than a second later, he felt a sharp pain in his side from the karate chop Suga sent his way. "You should know better than to lie to your best friends!" he hissed.
With a cry, Asahi spluttered, "O-Okay! I-I just see all these happy c-couples and it makes me f-feel so lonely s-sometimes!"
This outburst drew the attention of the rest of the team, and Nishinoya's cheeks puffed out as wide and they could go before he shouted, "Tanaka! We have to help Asahi get a girlfriend!"
"N-No, please... no," Asahi muttered, his body beginning to quiver.
"You're in safe hands!" Tanaka yelled, matching Nishinoya's energy. Now that the duo had gotten fired up, there was no stopping them as they sprinted over to him and looked up at him with bright, energetic eyes. "You're the ace of this team and there are plenty of beautiful girls at this school, so there's no reason why you should be single when you don't want to be!" Tanaka said reassuringly.
"You just need to put yourself out there!" Nishinoya added, a bright grin on his face, "Like how I pour my heart out to Kiyoko-san!"
From a few feet away, Tsukishima scoffed, "And where's that gotten you with her, exactly?"
"It's working wonders! Don't you see the way she looks at me?!"
An incredulous chuckle from the tall first year made Nishinoya growl under his breath. To ease the tension, Asahi commented sheepishly, "I would like to put myself out there, but it's hard when everyone thinks I got held back because of how mature I look."
Tanaka placed a hand on Asahi's shoulder and told him, "This may be true, but girls usually go for older guys anyway so you're in luck. Walk with us."
With that being said, Asahi followed Nishinoya and Tanaka to the equipment room as they helped finish putting everything away. Daichi and Suga stood in silence, thinking about the situation at hand. "Should we rescue him?" Suga asked, turning to look at his teammate.
"Nope."
Nishinoya and Tanaka's constant pressing in addition to Tsukki's taunting eventually made Asahi give in and download a dating app on his phone. After that, the entire team sat around a table at a local restaurant, trying to help him fill out his information and pick a profile picture, much to his embarrassment.
"Karasuno's volleyball ace!" Tanaka had said, standing up and gesturing dramatically, as if the words were in front of him.
"No, that sounds way too vain!" Ennoshita had argued from across the table.
"Single and ready to mingle!" Yamaguchi had called out.
"Pfft. Nice," had been Kageyama's sarcastic response.
As the suggestions had continued to pour out, there had been nothing for Asahi to do aside from put his face in his hands and relinquish all control of his dating profile to his overly zealous teammates.
Once his profile had been created, though, it hadn't taken long for Asahi to become addicted to the app after parting ways with his heavily invested team. While he saw a lot of pretty faces, there were no candidates for him so far. Each of the girls just seemed too vain or self-obsessed for his liking. The last thing he wanted was someone who was high-maintenance or judgmental. He also feared that if he pressed the check mark button, he would be sealing the deal with someone. He was scared of making that commitment too early on, so he went to bed not having liked a single person.
This all changed for him, however, during lunch at school the next day. He had been sitting outside with a sandwich in one hand and his phone in the other, growing tired of pressing the X button, when a particular profile caught his eye. (L/n) (f/n), 3rd year at Karasuno High, he read. Upon closer inspection of the profile picture, he found himself entranced by the girl's bright smile and her friendly (e/c) eyes. Why haven't I seen her before? he wondered.
After reading through your profile and staring at other pictures, he knew he wanted to meet you. His phone let out a cheerful chirp as he pressed the check mark button, and his heart began to race.
Inside a classroom, you sat eating lunch with your friends while showing them a funny video you'd found on social media. When you felt your phone vibrate and saw an unfamiliar notification at the top of your screen, your eyebrows knitted in confusion and you paused the video to check on it.
"Was that from that dating app you got?" one of your friends asked.
"Yeah..." you murmured. Upon opening the app and seeing that your profile had been liked by none other than Asahi himself, your jaw dropped.
"Who is it?!" she gasped.
You were about to tell her, but the other one butted in and squealed, "Don't respond yet!"
With a roll of the eyes, you groaned, "I wasn't going to! Anyway, it's Azumane-san. I think he's in the class below us."
"Ooh! (F/n)'s goin on a date with the volleyball star!"
"I haven't even liked him back yet..."
"Wait until after school!"
"Okay, geez!"
At practice, Asahi was grilled by Nishinoya and Tanaka while everyone set up the net and prepared. Their eyeballs nearly popped out of their heads when they saw your pictures, and Asahi's own brown eyes widened when he noticed that you'd liked him back. That had been completely unexpected to him, but he was happy, he realized, after his intense panic died down.
After taking down the nets, everyone gathered around Asahi once again to form a plan of attack for sliding into your DM's, as Nishinoya called it.
"Hey, girl, what's good?" Tanaka suggested.
"Did it hurt when you fell from heaven?" Nishinoya chimed in.
"I'm surprised I've never seen you around school before, I'm sure I would've noticed someone as beautiful as you, are" Ennoshita offered.
"Oh, that's good..." Yamaguchi sighed.
"Yeah, where's your girlfriend with those smooth moves of yours?" Tanaka questioned.
"Ask her if she likes milk, and, if so, which brand she thinks is superior," Kageyama commented.
"What the hell, Kageyama?" Tsukishima replied.
"Just tell her you're asking for a concerned friend. It's not a weird question."
"Sure, and neither is your obsession with milk." Hinata had to stand between them after this comment from Tsukki nearly made Kageyama blow a fuse.
"U-Uh..." Asahi uttered, feeling as though his brain was shorting out from being overloaded with so much information at once. His clammy hands remained clenched around his phone, his fingers frozen in place above the keyboard.
"Just be yourself, Asahi," Suga told him, noticing he was quickly becoming overwhelmed by everyone else. This helpful suggestion helped Asahi restore some faith in himself, and he took a deep breath, pushing a stray strand of his brown hair behind his ear as he prepared to send the first message.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Over the course of the next few days, you found yourself chatting frequently with Asahi and spending more time thinking about him. His sweet messages revealed his timid and gentle personality, and the fact that you knew he was being himself made you open up to him more. During your time using dating apps, you'd had your fair share of shitty experiences that had made you lose faith in humanity. But your daily conversations with Asahi put your mind at ease and lowered your guard.

Despite being shy at times, he was still funny and playful with you, much to your delight. One time, during lunch, he'd asked you over text message if you played any sports.

If trying to jump over a hurdle and eating shit counts, then yes, you'd responded.

No worries. I still hit myself in the face when I pass every now and then, he'd replied, making you giggle to yourself.

While he was a sweetheart, you'd noticed he could sometimes be too passive in situations where you wanted him to take some initiative.

So, when are we gonna see each other, then? I mean, if you want to? you asked him as you lay in bed one night, watching movies on your laptop. Despite being on the lookout for him at school, you'd managed to avoid bumping into one another.

Whenever you want! he replied, making you grumble.

Okay, how about Friday?

If that works for you, then works for me.

You pursed your lips and texted, So, what do you wanna do?

Whatever you want! was his eager response.

"Agh! I want you to decide!" you hissed, shaking your fists in the air. You hated how refused to make a decision. Why didn't he realize that if you said no to an idea, it wasn't the end of the world? You would give anything for him to come up with something on his own. I gave you a day, now you think of something for us to do, how about that? you bargained.

At home, Asahi was sweating. Shit, what do girls like to do? he asked himself, putting down his phone for a moment to wipe his clammy hands on his sweatpants. Well, he typed once he'd taken a moment to think, I don't have practice that day, so I would you like to grab something to eat with me after school?

Your prayers had been answered. He had made a suggestion. Of course! Where should I meet you?

Where's most convenient for you?

"Damn it, Asahi! You're killing me, here!"

Regardless of the frustration you felt towards his indecisiveness sometimes, you couldn't help having a soft spot for Asahi. In the days that passed following your discussion about setting up your first date, you found your heart skipping a beat when he randomly popped into your head or messaged you back. Because of this, you slowly became more excited for your date with him. When you left your class on Friday after school to meet him by the front gates, your stomach was tied up in knots and you suddenly felt self-conscious. And when you saw him standing by the entrance, holding a small flower in his hand he must've plucked from the ground and wearing a warm smile on his face, you felt the journey that had brought you together had been well worth it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bonus Ending!
On your first date, Asahi had mentioned that you were bound to meet his teammates at some point if you stuck around, but nothing could've prepared you for that day. Now, about a month and a half later, you had held the title of Asahi's girlfriend for a little over a week, and his nosy teammates had been harassing him endlessly about when they were going to meet you. When he met you outside the gym after practice with the entire Karasuno volleyball team in tow, you couldn't help but feel a little anxious.
"(F/n)-san!" Nishinoya and Tanaka called your name in synch and rushed over to you, bowing their heads, "It is a pleasure to meet you. Just know that this whole thing happened because of us, so you're welcome. But also, thank you for gracing us with your appearance."
"O-Oh, thanks," you replied with a nervous chuckle.
Daichi and Suga approached you next, giving you a familiar greeting, since Asahi had introduced you to them before anyone else. It was only fair. Hinata stared at you in awe as he shook your hand vigorously and introduced himself. Kageyama marched over to you and said, "Kageyama Tobio. Do you like milk?"
You couldn't help but be amused by the completely random nature of his inquiry as you answered slowly, "It's alright."
His blue eyes narrowed. "Just alright? Obviously you haven't had this." He held up a small, blue and white carton. "You're coming with us to get dinner, right? They have this kind of milk there, so order it with your meal. It'll refine your palette."
"Sure thing, Kageyama."
He placed the white bendy straw protruding from the carton into his mouth and strolled away, only pausing to hiss at Tsukki, "See, it's not a weird question."
Once you'd met the whole team, Asahi wrapped his hand around yours as everyone began walking to the restaurant of choice for a post-practice reward. "Sorry if you felt bombarded. Just know that they really like you," he commented bashfully, a blush rising to his cheeks, "And Kageyama's been waiting ages to ask you that."
You laughed, making him smile brightly at you. "I like them too. They're funny," you told him, "But I still like you the most."
His usual shy tendencies were overridden for a moment when he stopped walking, took your face in his hands, and planted a gentle kiss on your lips. Now it was your turn to blush wildly. When he pulled away, you brought him back in for another, enjoying the tender moment you were sharing and not wanting it to end.
"Come on, lovebirds!" Daichi called, making the two of you break your kiss. You giggled at seeing your boyfriend's red face and grabbed his hand once again so you could catch up with the rest of the team.
