【 Window | Yamaguchi Tadashi 】

Part Two of 'My Favorite Hello'

--

i wish you knew,

that everytime i say goodnight

--

She wondered, why?

He never talked to her anymore.

He always tried to avoid her.

He had never replied to her texts.

He looked away every time she looked at him.

He had left her confused.

And worried.

And scared.

Did I do something wrong?

Is he keeping something from me?

Is he mad at me?

Countless thoughts ran through her head, causing her to lay awake at night, thinking, just thinking, about what had happened.

But somehow,

Every night, before she went to bed, she still went to her window, hoping he was there to answer her and her questions.

No, he wasn't there, but a piece of paper always was, appearing right when she checked the window and disappearing when she woke up.

Stuck there on his window, curtains drawn and lights off, the paper lay silently.

It always had the words "Good night", and just that, but oddly enough, it did put her to sleep.

--

That night, she came home tired, shutting her bedroom door behind her, sighing in frustration and agony.

Her eyes were quite red, and her cheeks were swollen, tears still flowing slowly down her face, dampening the floor below.

She threw her bag onto her desk and dropped her jacket on the floor, throwing her own body to her bed and covering her face with her fluffy pillows.

She stayed like that for a while before deciding that it was time to change and go straight to bed.

She dragged herself to her closet and picked out a pair of pajamas, then headed to the bathroom.

Changing her clothes, she let out a yawn and pulled on her shirt before walking back to her room.

She was forgetting something.

--

He was watching her from his own window, noticing her tired features and her depressing look.

His eyes followed her figure as she moved from the door to her bed, slamming her body down while letting out a frustrated sigh.

He frowned at this.

What happened to her?

His heart started to hurt, seeing her like this.

But then again,

it wasn't him who could soothe her pain.

The boy crumpled the paper in his palms and drew his curtains, throwing the paper in his trashbin.

"*"

The girl then blinked back, opening her eyes and scooting towards her window, just to catch a glimpse of the message that she knew that could reassure her.

But tonight,

all she did was stare back at the plain curtains behind the layer of glass.

--

Yamaguchi walked silently towards his school, a gentle breeze dancing lightly through the air.

He sighed and pulled up his scarf to his mouth; his mind was filled with things he had wished weren't there because the more he thought about those thoughts, the more his heart started to hurt.

Heart, why must you do this? You only had one job, which was to pump blood. That's it. He let out a heap of air.

As he continued walking down the road, his eyes trailed off to the metal sign hanging over his head and the small interior of a cozy cafe behind a glass.

Ah, so it's this place.

He wanted to go in, but at the same time, he didn't want to, a wave of both good and bad memories washing over him.

He shook it off and continued his path, shutting his eyes and dusting his blazer.

I'm going to be late, anyways.

"*"

She walked along the halls of Karasuno, her feet tapping against the tiles of the floor with every stride she took, small huffs of air escaping her mouth from time to time.

As she continued walking a good distance behind the seaweed-colored haired boy, her mouth emitted no sound; she was determined to talk to him today.

He turned to the exit, hands in his pockets as he walked right out of the building, the girl jogging stealthily after him.

He was oblivious to his surroundings at the moment, as his thoughts were filled with the goal of performing the perfect jump float serve, which he was sure to be much of a help to the team.

The two continued walking, one humming softly to himself and the other watching him intently as she followed his path.

The boy, once again, stopped in his tracks right in front of the cafe, staring into its contents with a blank expression.

The girl took notice of this, and started to ask herself what could possibly have been going on inside his mind, wondering why he was just staring and not going inside like she knew he would do.

"Tadashi," she called out softly, walking towards him.

The boy jumped back in utter surprise- she was the last person he would have thought to be at his back, at this very moment, in this very place.

"W-What are you-" he began, fumbling over his words, still taken aback by the situation.

"Can I buy you a drink?" She asked, tilting her head to the side, with arms crossed.

"U-uh-"

"Fine, be that way. But I was going to buy you a whole plate of soggy fries," she smirked.

"Sneaky, but irresistable. Let's go, if you insist," he sighed, can't helping the sudden smile that had crept up on his cheeks.

She knew that soggy fries were his ultimate weakness.

The sound of a small bell had echoed in their ears as he opened the door for the both of them, greeting the waiter with a small wave.

"Ah, it's been quite a while, hasn't it? It's nice to see the both of you again," he smiled, handing them a menu, "Oh wait, shall I get you the usual, or would you like something different today?"

"The usual would be great," Yamaguchi nodded.

The girl had faced the boy with a straight face and a pair of curious eyes.

"Tadashi,"

"Y-Yeah?"

"Explain. Now."

He looked away, a slight bit of shadow falling over his face, refusing to look her straight in the eye, for he couldn't just tell her.

She wouldn't understand.

"You're being stubborn," she sighed, "I'll start then."

He looked at her with a questioning face. She had something to tell me? Or maybe not.

"Ugh, Tadashi, love is cruel," she groaned, "I'm no good at it,"

"Huh?"

"Nobody loves me for who I truly am. They're all jerks who want nothing but to play with some other person's feelings."

"What do you mean?"

"Every guy who asks me out on a date ends up throwing me away the next day. The world is not kind to some people. I think I'm on that list."

So that explains the puffy face and the swollen eyes.

"Why?" She asked, stealing a fry from her friend's plate.

"I don't know," he admitted.

"Anyways, it's your turn. Why have you been avoiding me?"

"I... can't tell you."

"Don't be stupid. I'm not stupid either. Tell me,"

"I can't."

"What do you mean, you can't? Of course you can!"

"I'm sorry," he said, tears streaming down his face, "please blame this cowardly heart of mine."

--

With a sigh, she opened her bedroom door and shut it behind her, a mix of frustration and sadness rushing through her veins.

After he told her those words, Yamaguchi ran away from her, leaving her there with her questions yet to be answered.

Her eyes shifted to her window, where a hint of white caught her eyes.

She stood up and opened her window, reading the words on a piece of paper stuck on the window, curtains drawn back behind the layer of glass.

Good night.

I'm sorry for earlier.

I know I'm probably a jerk as well, and I can't even begin to think of how disappointed you are at me.

Please forgive me.

I hope we're still friends.

And by the way,

For a long time,

I have loved you.

||sneaky extended ending:||

As Yamaguchi positioned himself at his window to watch over his friend that night, a glint of white had made him squint.

A piece of paper was stuck to her window, making him chuckle lightly to himself, smiling at her very original idea.

Good night.

I forgive you.

And no, I'm not disappointed in you.

Don't ever think that.

Because you know,

I think,

I think I may just love you too.
