(Asahi Azumane) Let Me Be a Little Bit Selfish

(A/n): Hello and welcome to my first Haikyuu!! oneshot. :D I hope you like it and I will be typing more in the future because they're all friggin cuties. Please read the description if you haven't already :3

Also, apparently, I REALLY have a thing for tall brunette boys that are big teddy bears. Whoops XD

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Asahi-senpai." The Karasuno ace glanced down at the short red headed boy after being acknowledged. Hinata had that particular glint in his eyes that made the giant a bit uneasy but he nodded his head at him to continue. "What do you think of (F/n)-chan?" The first year asked him, a wicked smile on his face. Instantly, Asahi's face flushed a deep crimson red at the question.
In his honest opinion, he believes that (F/n) (L/n) is the most beautiful person he has ever laid his eyes on. Every little thing about her brightens his day and he's completely head over heels. From her luscious, (h/c) hair that frames her precious face perfectly to her bubbly and sweet personality, he couldn't find any flaw.
He remembered the day he first met her. (F/n) was in the same batch along with Nishinoya and Tanaka and she was begged to to watch their volleyball practices. Asahi thanked the gods above that she agreed and she has been their number one supporter ever since. Even though she wasn't officially on the team, she might as well be.
"She's nice," Asahi quickly told the younger boy, his blush still powdered across his face. He looked away to avoid the intense eye contact.
"Just nice?" Hinata pressed on with a pout. Asahi had no idea what brought this question up and as to why the decoy was so persistent for such an answer. "(F/n)-san is amazing! She makes the best cookies, she's really smart, she helps us and stuff, and she is really pretty!" The ace let out a sigh as he slightly nodded. This were things that he already knew and loved about her. Although, he was glad he wasn't the only one that admires her greatness. "She even convinced you to join the team again!"
This was also true.
There was a time after he quit that (F/n) had approached him about what happened. That heartbreaking game was the only one she wasn't able to attend to because of family matters but when she heard the news, she had to talk to the gentle giant herself. The first time the (e/c) eyed beauty asked him, he completely shut her out. It wasn't intentional but he had too much overwhelming emotions at the time and he didn't want her to be sucked in it. She promptly let him be.
Those few months were agony because he wasn't able to play the sport he loved but hated at the same time. Also, because he saw less of her angelic face. There was a time that the two had lost contact and would barely greet each other in the hallways.
Then a new year came, along with the fresh batch of new players, she had to convince him. (F/n) saw the potential of the new team and believed that they could go far in the future. But this can't be attained with Karasuno's Ace. In the end, it was a success. They finally had their volleyball once again.
"Alright, break's over. Let's get back to practicing," Daichi proclaimed while setting his water bottle down back onto the bench.
The players obeyed and scurried back onto the courts and began their practice once again. At this moment, (F/n) burst in through the doors breathless. "(F/n)-chan!" Tanaka and Nishinoya greeted her with bright smiles. The glass hearted third year averted his gaze over to his crush and grinned as well. Still gorgeous as ever.
"Hello everyone! Sorry for coming in late," (F/n) shouted for the whole team to hear and bowed. "Please, continue your practice." She strolled over to where Coach Ukai, Takeda-sensei, and Shimizu-senpai. She took her usual spot next to the raven haired beauty and let out a breath of air.
"You've been coming later and later, (F/n)," Shimizu stated, her dark eyes shifting over to the younger girl next to her.
The second year girl shuffled in her spot and twiddled with her fingers, a horrible nervous habit of hers. "Ah, well, I've been talking to the advisor more lately," she muttered in a hushed tone, her eyes landing on a particular third year.
She smiled to herself as she watched Asahi work hard with his play. It made her heart swell with joy to see that boy do what he loves. "(F/n)."
"Huh?" She uttered, her cheeks flushed.
"I asked you what you have been going there for," Shimizu repeated, now that the younger girl was paying attention.
(F/n) trusted the beautiful manager, as she is one of her closest friends. She even told her more things than Tanaka and Nishinoya, and she had known those boys much longer. With a puff, she replied, "Promise not to say anything to anyone." Shimizu nodded, leaning in closer. "I have a chance to study abroad in Europe."
"That's amazing, (F/n)! But you don't sound so pleased."
The young girl sulked as her eyes scanned the entire gym. She had grown to love everyone here, one more than the others. "If I do get accepted, then I leave by the end of this month."
"... Before our Inter-High tournament?"
(F/n) sadly nodded, her head hung so to not meet her eyes. It's been (F/n)'s dream to travel and be able to practice her English. She wants to see the world and have this amazing experience... But she doesn't want to leave everything behind just yet.
"When do you find out if you get accepted or not?"
"Tomorrow after school, the same time," (F/n) sighed, trying her best not to tear up at the possibility of leaving the volleyball team behind.
"Well... Do what you believe is best. We'll have your back no matter what," Shimizu reassured, giving her a pat on the back. The manager's eyes glimpsed up at the sweating boys and she spotted her manly classmate with the gentle soul. She looked back at (F/n). "You're going to tell Asahi-kun how you feel if you do decide to go."
The (h/c) haired girl's face burned at the mention of the topic. Shimizu was the only one that knew about this crush... Well, as what (F/n) believes. It still makes her completely flustered whenever the older girl brings up that particular subject. "I-I know I should..." Her eyes locked with Asahi for a brief moment and he shot her a warm smile before going back to talking to Nishinoya.
Her heart tugged in her chest of leaving her friends and family behind. What do I give up?
"You should also tell the team about this, even though you just told me not to say anything about it. It's better that they know about this news than waiting until the day you're moving out of the country." (F/n) nodded at the older girl's suggestion. She knew she was right. She has to tell the team.
"I'll announce it at the end of practice," she finally agreed, hanging her head again. She was not looking forward to it but this needs to be done today.
...
"Good job everyone, go on home!" Coach Ukai told the team, receiving a thank you back.
(F/n) stepped up, with Shimizu by her side. "Wait!" She exclaimed before the group could disperse. As all eyes turned their focus onto her, she became nervous. "I-I have an announcement to make."
Then, she finally told everyone her reason as to why she has been coming late to their volleyball practices lately. Each boy, even the seemingly emotionless Tsukishima and Kageyama, had an expression of shock cross their faces. The first years may not have known the second year as long as the others but they enjoy her company and positivity. It's going to be completely weird not seeing her beautiful face every day.
Of course, Asahi was not taking this very well. He tried his best to keep it in but failed as his face scrunched into a very displeased expression. The girl he was so desperately in love with might leave them... Leave him. He wanted to do so much more with the young goddess but now that might not happen.
Once (F/n) had finished her explanation and possible plans, a silence greeted the volleyball gym. Slowly, the tears finally managed to stream down her cheeks. "I-I'm sorry I haven't told you all sooner," she sputtered while desperately wiping away her wet cheeks. "I r-really love you guys..." Asahi couldn't bear it any longer. He was the first to tackle her into a much needed hug. (F/n) let herself bawl into his chest, the need of him close to her very appreciated. One by one, the boys and Shimizu joined into a grand group hug, in hopes this will help her (and themselves) feel better.
"We need to do something... Tonight!" Sugawara offered as they finally separated from one another. "Let's go eat out and then do something fun."
"G-guys, I-I don't even know if I've been accepted for the program yet," (F/n) responded, shocked by the rest of the boys' cooperation with the sudden idea.
Some of the volleyball players exchanged glances. "(F/n)... We want you live your dream. We can't be in the way of that," Daichi told her. Everyone nodded in agreement with the captain. It only made (F/n) cry even more. "Well, let's go! Coach Ukai, Takeda-sensei, do you want to join us?"
"Oh. No. This is your thing. Don't let the two adults be in the way of that," The bespectacled man responded with a caring smile. "Go ahead and have fun." Coach agreed with him, also mumbling an excuse of having to go work at the store.
With that, the volleyball team and (F/n) left the gym.
~*~*~*~*~*~
The day ended with the volleyball team going out to dinner, eating whatever (F/n) desires, and stopping by a nearby neighborhood’s park. Definitely, the park wasn’t exactly the idea of celebrating in anyone’s mind but (F/n) insisted. The moment they had taken a step onto the playground, a game of tag ensued, initiated by Tanaka tapping the (h/c) haired girl’s shoulder and muttering, “You’re it!” The team had fun acting like little kids at that moment and for a moment, their troubles were behind them and forgotten. For once, they were not high school classmates under the pressure of grades and extracurricular activities, but just friends having fun with each other.
This is what (F/n) needed.
The moment the skies were painted with wonderful hues of orange, blue, and pink, the Karasuno volleyball team decided it was time to go on home. At different times, people have separated to go home, since some live farther than others but Asahi insisted on walking (F/n) to her house.
The two walked along the path to her house in comfortable silence… well, as comfortable as can be since both of their hearts were beating against their ribcages in high speed.
I’ve got to tell him.
I’ve got to tell her.
“Asahi—”
“(F/n)—” The two glanced at each other instantly when they happened to say their names simultaneously. They shared a laugh.
“You go first,” (F/n) offered with a nod.
Oh no. Asahi got a good look of her beautiful face and felt his throat closing up. He wants to tell her. It was such a desperate need to tell her everything he ever felt about her. But, what if she rejects me? The thought made him stiffen. No, no, no. He would internally die even as he believes that it will happen.
“Asahi, you wuss! Why are you so scared?” Nishinoya had nagged him only a couple days ago. “You need to tell (F/n)-chan how you feel! If you don’t do anything soon, some guy is going to confess their feelings to her and take her away. Do you want that to happen?”
“N-no, I don’t,” Asahi replied to the short libero as he felt a figurative arrow pierce through his heart at the possibility of someone else asking her out.
“Then, go! Tell (F/n)-chan how much you love her, ya dolt!”
What Asahi doesn’t realize was that he was getting paler by the second, worrying (F/n) to no end. “Asahi-kun? Asahi-kun!” She called out to him while shaking his shoulders to snap him out of whatever he was thinking. The ace blinked finally and glanced down at her. “Are you ok, Asahi-kun? You look pale.”
His once paled face flushed to a deep crimson red within a second. “N-no, I’m fine!” he told her dismissively.
“Are you sure? Do you want to take a short rest at my house?” she suggested, pointing at the building next to her. Asahi froze when he now just noticed that they have made it to their destination. Already? How long have I spaced out? Asahi shook his head in response. “So, uh, what is it that you want to tell me?”
This is it. “Don’t go,” he stated. Ack! That’s not what I wanted to say! But he did mean those words. (F/n) meant so much to him and he was always so grateful of her. Her optimism and bubbly personality always made him push harder during practice. She wanted him to continue volleyball. If she left…
(F/n)’s eyebrows scrunched together in confusion as to what he meant. “You don’t me to go into my house?” she asked him, completely missing what he was truly saying.
“N-no, I do!” Asahi stammered. (F/n) simply cocked her head slightly to the side, waiting for him to continue. Wow, so cute. “I-I… I don’t want you to go to Europe.” The girl’s eyes widened a bit at his reply that Asahi mistook as something bad. “I-I’m s-sorry, (F/n)-kun! That was selfish of me to say.” The tall third-year had to turn his head away to avoid any eye contact with his crush. He took a deep breath and finally rambled out, “B-But, right now, I want to be selfish. None of us want you to leave us. I don’t want you to leave me. You have no idea how much you have impacted me ever since I met you. From the first time you stepped foot in that gym, I knew I was done for because you looked so beautiful that day and I was in awe. And then, you stayed with us even when you didn’t have to. I was able to see you every day and it made me extremely happy. Just seeing you with a smile on your face brightens my day.”
 “Asahi-kun…” (F/n) muttered in surprise. She smacked a hand over her mouth as she finally understood what he just said to her. “D-did you just confess to me?”
Well, that was said very bluntly. “Yeah… I did.”
What the giant didn’t expect next was the bright, wide smile that appeared on her precious face, along with tears. “I’m so happy!” She replied, attacking him into a hug. “I’ve wanted to tell you the same thing.” The tall brunette couldn’t believe it. She returns the feelings… He picked her up in his arms and twirled her around in the air, causing her to giggle uncontrollably.
He placed her down on the concrete ground once again and gave her a cautious look. “What about Europe?” he asked her. He can’t celebrate just yet. She still might leave by the end of this month.
The happy feeling faded. “I’ll… I—” She pursed her lips as she thought about it.
What am I giving up?
“I’ll wait for you.”
“Heh?”
Asahi took hold of her hands into his. “I’ll wait for you,” he repeated again. “I don’t care if it’ll take years. I want you to live your dream as well as the volleyball team.”
(F/n) gazed up at him, overwhelmed at how amazing he was. “I knew I was right liking you,” she giggled, standing onto her tiptoes to give the third year a kiss on the cheek.
~*~*~Next Day~*~*~
The whole volleyball team practiced as usual but tension hung uncomfortably in the air. One person was missing and that person was finding out whether or not she won the chance to fly to Europe and study abroad. Of course, no one in that gym wanted their friend to leave them behind but all that matters at this point is her happiness and her dreams. Practice was nearly over now. Where can she be?
“Maybe we should go find her,” the redheaded decoy suggested while rolling the volleyball in his hands, glancing up at his teammates. “It shouldn’t take this long to find out, right?” His eyes landed on the ace, trying to figure out what he may be thinking.
Asahi hadn’t been playing his best during practice at all. His head was only clouded of one thing, and that was (F/n) (L/n). He was torn. He had finally confessed to the girl he was in love with and that happiness might as well be ripped from his grasp. But, finally… He did it. And she returned the feelings. Nothing can beat that overwhelming feeling of someone you liked for so long like you back. If he could relive that moment, he would.
“Asahi…” The gentle giant snapped his attention away from his clouded thoughts and glimpsed down to his libero friend. “Did something happen yesterday when you walked (F/n)-chan home?” The short second year asked with a smug smile on his face. Asahi’s face instantly flared bright at the question. “Did you finally confess to her?!”
Nishinoya wasn’t really a quiet person when it comes to things like that, and so the whole team heard his question. Everyone’s eyes landed on the ace with awe written on their faces. “Asahi!” Hinata gaped, his bright eyes glistening with excitement. “What did she say? I bet she returned the feelings!”
Everyone seemed to have hinted at his crush on (F/n) (L/n) this whole time and Asahi was deeply confused. Was I that obvious? “D-did all of you know I liked (F/n)?” he asked his team cautiously. He received positive feedback, which got his face burning brighter.
“Asahi, it’s ok. There’s no need to feel flustered! (F/n) had always liked you better than the rest of us,” Sugawara replied, patting his fellow third-year on the shoulder.
“You didn’t think we’d notice?” the team captain chuckled under his breath. “You think you’d know us better than that to figure it out!”
Suddenly, the sound of the doors opening caught everyone’s attention. It was the girl of the hour, walking inside the gym with the most normal expression ever. Her (e/c) eyes landed on the volleyball team, as they seemed to be huddled up together around Asahi. “(F/N)!” All the boys rushed over to the girl, much to her shock. “What happened?” They all asked her anxiously.
The young beauty smiled at her boys. “I didn’t get into the program,” she replied with a happy tone. Everyone didn’t know how to take the news. They were ecstatic over the news that (F/n) was not leaving them but… their dream. “Why isn’t everyone jumping around in joy, ey? That means I’m not leaving!” Gradually, everyone began to hug her, accepting the fact that she’ll be staying with them.
“Alright, alright. Enough with the mushiness, get back to practicing!” Coach Ukai demanded the boys.
All of them obeyed and went off to the courts once again, all except one. (F/n) grinned up her gentle giant. “Europe can wait,” she said. From one of the pockets of her bag, she took out a sheet of paper.
Asahi glanced down at it curiously as she had given it to him to read. His eyebrows furrowed as he scanned the words for the second time to make sure he was reading it correctly. “… (F/n)… It says…”
The (h/c) haired girl wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him down to close the gap between their lips. Asahi stiffened at the gesture at first but quickly adjusted, relaxing into the sweet, addictive kiss.
“WOO, GET ‘EM, ASAHI!” Nishinoya and Tanaka shouted from the side, causing the two teens to pull away embarrassed.
(F/n) giggled over her classmates’ abruptness but turned her focus back on the boy in front of her. “I chose to stay as my choice, ok? Like I said, Europe can wait. I want to stay here with everyone and with you. Plus, I only lied because I don’t want everyone to feel guilty for me but I think you should know about it.” Asahi was absolutely speechless. She chose to stay on her own free will. He knew that. “A-Asahi-kun? What’s wrong?”
He was crying but what she didn’t know was it was tears of joy. He leaned down and gave her a surprising second kiss. “I’m just really happy,” he replied, wiping away the tears. (F/n) nodded, now understanding him. “I’ll see you after practice.” Asahi jogged back onto the courts, feeling ten times better and stronger than ever before.
She’s staying and for once, the gentle giant was able to be a little selfish.
