Kagehina & Co: County Fair
Hinata was bouncing with excitement. Along with the entire Karasuno volleyball team, he was waiting in line to get into their local fair. It was 5pm in late July, so it was still fairly hot, but he knew it would start to cool down any minute.
"Can you please calm down?" Kageyama said with a facade of anger. Hinata looked up at his boyfriend with a huge smile on his face.
"Nope! I'm too excited!"
"It's just a county fair! Half these rides probably aren't even safe to ride," Kageyama said distastefully.
"You can't forget," Tanaka popped up out of nowhere with Nishinoya right behind him, doing a drumroll on his legs, "the DEMOLITION DERBY!!!!!" Noya and Tanaka proceeded to scream for a good solid 5 seconds after this declaration, causing quite a scene.
"Shut up, you two!" Daichi shouted from the front of the line. Suga just sighed in disappointment.
"Of course you would be excited to see a bunch of cars crash into each other until they can't run anymore," Tsukishima remarked.
"It's very barbaric," Yamaguchi added.
"That's the whole point!" Tanaka and Nishinoya shouted in unison. Sometimes it was creepy how in sync those two were. Then, both Ennoshita and Asahi came up behind them and slapped them each respectively on the back.
"Please be quiet," Ennoshita advised. "We'll all already be going half deaf from the roar of the engines in there." Tanaka and Noya shut up.
After a few minutes of waiting, they all were in with wristbands for unlimited rides. Suga and Daichi called a meeting before everyone went off in different directions.
"Okay, Suga and I are going to get something to eat, and then save some seats in the stadium, alright? You guys can do whatever until 6:30, which is when you should come meet us so we don't have to be those people with jackets spread out 10 feet on each side of us, okay? Always stay with a buddy, and make sure to eat something at some point!" Daichi clapped, signifying the end of the meeting, and then him and Suga slipped away as Tanaka and Noya seemed to take charge.
From there, the group splintered into three groups. Tsukishima, Yamaguchi, Kinoshita, and Narita all went one way. None of them were very interested in going on things like the drop tower and the other crazy rides, so they headed for the ferris wheel and the other more easygoing things.
Noya and Tanaka were accompanied by Asahi and Ennoshita, both of whom agreed that Noya and Tanaka needed some kind of supervision.
"You know, now that I think about it, it might not be the best idea to leave those two on their own either," Asahi mused, looking in the direction that Hinata had run off two, with Kageyama yelling and chasing him.
"They'll get what's coming to them," Ennoshita said flatly.
"Wow, harsh," Asahi said with a laugh.
"Yeah, well, I'm going to have to deal with them all of next year, so I've decided to not care until then."
"Fair enough." The two turned to see Noya and Tanaka already heading to one of the rides that spins you around so fast you feel like your face is peeling off.
"This is going to be a long night."
Meanwhile, Hinata was elatedly explaining his plan to Kageyama.
"Okay, so we have to go on all the wild ones before we eat so we don't get sick, right? So that means, that one, that one, that one," and so on.
"If you puke, I'm staying at least 10 feet away from you for the rest of the night."
"No fair!"
By the time it was time to go take their seats, the pair had gone on almost every ride in the place. There was one that spun you around while also swinging you back and forth really high in the air. There was another that just spun you around so fast you were glued to the wall, no need for a seatbelt really. Another swung back and forth like a swing until it finally went all the way around, keeping you upright the whole time. They both made the executive decision to avoid the Tilt-A-Whirl and the Zipper. There was another where you were in a car that just went around in a circle really fast while super loud music played, and another where you were strapped into a hang-glider-like contraption, and just flew around in circles.
Their last stop was the drop tower.
"It's so high!" Hinata exclaimed with anticipation.
"It's not really. Maybe 100 feet?"
"That's still high." They got on a strapped in, and slowly they were lifted up.
"It's a really nice view, though," Hinata said as they were lifted up above pretty much every ride except the ferris wheel.
"Yeah, it is," Kageyama looked over at Hinata with a smile and reached out to take his hand. The angle was a little awkward, but Hinata laced his fingers with Kageyama's nonetheless.
The sun was just beginning to set, the sky painted pink with the lights of the fair lighting up the ground. It was quite beautiful, and for a moment Kageyama forgot he was even on the drop tower.
That feeling of bliss quickly came to an end when the drop tower stopped moving and there was a second of pure panic before the two were sent hurdling to the ground, both screaming completely involuntarily.
"Shit, Hinata!" Kageyama exclaimed when they reached the bottom, wrenching his hand out of the death grip the shorter boy had it in. "I think you broke every single bone in my hand!"
"Can we do it again, Kags? Oh can we please!!" Hinata begged, his eyes wide with adrenaline.
"You can just stay here if you want to do it again, there's no one else in line," the operator said, hearing the two of them.
"Perfect! Thank you!" Hinata immediately sat back down and pulled the safety belt back on. Kageyama just sighed and did the same.
"You would just do this over and over forever if you could, wouldn't you?" Kageyama asked.
"Of course. It makes me feel alive!" Kageyama actually laughed at that, as if Hinata wasn't full of life at any given time.
"More than hitting a perfect spike?" Kageyama teased. Hinata twisted his face into a thoughtful pout.
"Okay, maybe not, but it's close!" Hinata said. Kageyama smiled at his boyfriend and resisted the urge to take his hand again. He didn't need his bones crunched twice.
"How about this time, when we drop, try not to hold onto anything. Not the seat, not my hand, not anything," Kageyama challenged. Hinata seemed to think for a moment and then nodded in agreement.
As the anticipation built up in his chest, Kageyama found himself not admiring the view this time, but instead Hinata. The glow of the sunset illuminated his face with a soft pinkish-orange, making him unfairly beautiful.
"Why are you staring at me?" Hinata asked. Kageyama was so zoned out he didn't even realize Hinata was looking back him.
"You look really pretty." Hinata giggled.
"I think the adrenaline is making you a little loopy, Kags."
"I want to kiss you." This just made Hinata laugh harder.
"Well you can't right now, silly! I promise a kiss at the bottom, though," Hinata said cheekily. Kageyama couldn't help but smile and shake his head, his only thoughts of how much he loved Hinata.
"Okay, get ready," he said, seeing they were nearing the top. "No holding on, okay?"
"Right."
They were silent until the tell-tale stalling of the tower and were once again found screaming in their descent. Hinata's hands were held out in front of him in a panicky concentration while Kageyama held them stick straight by his sides.
When they reached the bottom, Hinata's arms were shaking. He wearily undid the safety strap over him and stood up quickly, hugging Kageyama as soon as he was up.
"That made it so much worse, not being able to hold onto anything!! I can't believe you made me do that!" Hinata whined.
"But it made the thrill that much better right?" Kageyama said, his hand on Hinata's back slowly guiding him off the ride, giving a silent nod to the operator.
"Well, you got me there I guess," Hinata said. As soon as they were back on the ground Hinata flipped around and grabbed Kageyama's collar, pulling him down into a kiss. It was brief, but sweet; they were in public after all. When he pulled away, Hinata stayed right in front of Kageyama's face.
"I love you, Kags."
"Love you, too, dumbass."
They quickly went and got some french fries and an order of fried oreos and went to find Daichi and Suga. The rest of the team was already there, so Hinata and Kageyama took their seats on the edge of the group.
"Anyone want earplugs?" Suga asked the team. He just wanted to look out for their health. Yamaguchi, Tsukishima, and Ennoshita were the only ones who accepted the offer.
They all waited in anticipation for the event to start, and when the announcer started yelling at them to make some noise, everyone started screaming (except for Tsukishima, of course).
The thrill of a demolition derby is a simple one. What is better than watching a bunch of beat up old cars crash into each other in an effort to be the last one standing? Sometimes, a car would even catch on fire, hence the fire trucks surrounding the arena. It was kind of barbaric, but it was entertaining either way.
Ears ringing, the group filed out of the stadium with the rest of the crowd once the derby was over.
"Okay!" Daichi said, as the two of them herded everyone into a quiet spot. "You all have half an hour to go on any last minute rides! Then we meet back here for a group photo, ice cream, and then the ferris wheel, alright?"
This time, Hinata and Kageyama convinced Noya and Tanaka to come with them to the drop tower as they had missed it on their first time around. Ennoshita took a rain check and joined the group of second and first years who just wanted to take it easy, but Nishinoya convinced a nervous Asahi to tag along.
"It'll be fun! I promise!" Nishinoya said, holding Asahi's hand and tugging him along behind him. To the untrained eye, Asahi looked positively miserable, but to Hinata, Kageyama, and Tanaka who were all too familiar with Noya's antics, the glint of affection was obvious. Even those three weren't dumb enough to miss it.
The half hour flew by and they all met back together for the picture and ice cream. Once everyone was holding a cone with about five inches of ice cream piled on top, they got in line for the ferris wheel. It was at this time of the night that the lights from the fair lit up the sky and provided a surprisingly peaceful view.
They piled in in pairs, Hinata and Kageyama being the last to get on.
"I love the fair," Hinata said, resting his head on Kageyama's shoulder. Kageyama wrapped his free arm around the shorter boy's shoulders.
"It was better than I thought it would be. None of the rides were so sketchy that I thought for sure I wouldn't get off alive," Kageyama said. Hinata shoved into him playfully.
After several stops, it was finally time for Hinata and Kageyama to be seated at the top. Kageyama was looking out at the horizon, so this time it was Hinata's turn to stare at his boyfriend. Hinata would never fail to be impressed by Kageyama's jawline. He had the sudden urge to kiss the corner of it, right near his ear. So he did.
"Hey, what gives?" Kageyama said, startled, a blush beginning to form on his cheeks. Hinata just smiled and kissed his jawline again. "You know what? I'll do you one better."
At that, Kageyama leaned down and kissed Hinata right on the lips, slower than before. Kageyama knotted his hand into Hinata's soft hair, tugging on it slightly. They had all the privacy in the world up here after all.
Or so they thought.
"Hey can you cut it out? No one wants to see that!" a grumpy Tsukishima called out from behind them. Kageyama reluctantly broke away and Hinata turned to stick his tongue out at their teammate.
"You're just mad because no one wants to kiss you, Tsukishima!" Hinata yelled back.
"Wanna bet?" he responded, glancing at Yamaguchi, who just winked at Kageyama and Hinata. Dumbstruck, the two first years looked at each other in shock, then at the pair in the cart behind them.
"Wha- no, no wa- wha? uh- no," Hinata stuttered.
Yamaguchi and Tsukishima just shrugged in response.
"Just ignore them, Shoyo," Kageyama said, taking back Hinata's attention by pulling him in for another kiss. Seemingly distracted, Hinata leaned into the kiss, but then pulled away.
"Do you really think they're... a thing?" Hinata asked, his breath hot against Kageyama's face.
"Does it really matter?" Kageyama responded.
"I guess not. I'm just curious now!" Hinata whispered, frustrated.
"Well, I would love to distract you, but you're making it a little hard right now," Kageyama said in a low voice with a smirk on his face.
"Oh, well, my bad," Hinata exaggerated, leaning into his boyfriend's touch once again.
a lil bonus:
"They don't believe you, do they?" Yamaguchi sighed, once again subjected to too much PDA by his teammates in front.
"Probably not. Better to just let them wonder, I say," Tsukishima responded.
"Better to let them wonder," Yamaguchi agreed.

if there is ever a demolition derby in your area i would highly recommend you attend
anyway that's all i have to say about that and if the corona cancels the demolition derby this year i will create my own by driving headlong into traffic
