Iwaoi: Dreams
They say that you have the same dreams as your soul mate. They say that every night, you both dream about the exact same thing.
So when Oikawa overhears his crush of five years mentioning his dream, he was ecstatic when the description matched his own dream almost perfectly.
But when a skinny girl with a borderline scary amount of makeup leans toward Iwaizumi and says that she had the same dream, Oikawa's stomach dropped. Iwaizumi didn't look all that excited, though.
"Okay, well we can check in tomorrow, I guess," Iwaizumi says. Oikawa turns back to his friends once the conversation seemed to have come to an end. Iwaizumi and his group of friends generally sit right next to Oikawa's table during lunch. This usually makes Oikawa happy, but not when he hears things that he'd rather not. Maybe this girl won't actually turn out to be Iwaizumi's soul mate. Hopefully not.
Oikawa carries on through lunch with a slight knot of worry in his stomach. His classes go slowly, as usual, and he counts down the seconds till he could leave this hellhole that was only tolerable because he got to see Iwaizumi. He and Iwaizumi weren't actually friends, but they had spoken enough that Oikawa managed to develop a major crush on the guy.
At home, Oikawa just struggles with his homework instead of actually finishing it. Recently it has been extremely hard for him to concentrate on things he isn't interested in. The studying is the worst. He finds it physically hard to write down the definitions of random science terms. Maybe he can just wing it. That sounds good.
Oikawa collapses on his bed. Maybe he will have a really crazy dream so he has an excuse to talk about it tomorrow to his friends extra loudly. And then Iwaizumi will hear. And he will finally realize his love for Oikawa.
Oikawa remembers another thing that he has heard about dreams. If you have a dream with your soul mate actually in it that means that you know your soul mate well, and you can even have conscious conversations with them in the dream that you will both remember in the morning. That is one reason Oikawa isn't closer to Iwaizumi. If he became friends with his classmate and didn't have dreams about him, it would be confirmation that they just weren't made for each other. And to be perfectly honest, Oikawa was not in the correct emotional state to be able to handle that.
The next morning, Oikawa is especially pissed off because he couldn't even remember his dream. So he had nothing to tell his friends. He had scraps; he remembered the super market and someone throwing an orange. Maybe he can make something out of that. But if he changed it too much and Iwaizumi actually was listening to what the random group of nerds next to him was talking about, Iwaizumi might just brush it off completely.
Oikawa's classes are painful to go through. He has science first period, and the test is unimaginably hard. He should have studied more. For future reference, staring at the book and not actually reading the words does not help at all. The next classes consist of Oikawa having the word "shit," repeat endlessly in his head. Finally they are released to lunch, and Oikawa already feels like going back to sleep.
He completely tunes out his friends' voices and just listens to what Iwaizumi is saying.
"Hey, so what did you dream about?" he asks the girl from yesterday.
"You know, it was the funniest thing. I can't remember any of it!" she says with a nervous laugh. Oikawa knows she's lying.
"None of it at all?" Iwaizumi asks.
"Nope!"
"Well, then. I am afraid its not meant to be, I can remember something about the supermarket and oranges. I think there was throwing involved?" Iwaizumi says uncertainly. Oikawa wants to scream. Yes, there was throwing involved!
"But- but, I remember that-"
"Come on," Iwaizumi cuts the girl off. "I know you're lying. You do remember your dream, and it wasn't about oranges." He stares at her hard. He breath catches a little.
"Fine. I'm sorry," she says, looking down.
"It's fine. I'm sure you'll find them soon." Iwaizumi puts a comforting hand on her shoulder. Oikawa wanted to badly to be able to go over there and talk to Iwaizumi. Maybe that really is the best thing to do. He knows that they have the same dreams, if he becomes close to Iwaizumi, then he will appear in Iwaizumi's dreams and he will know.
Oikawa decides that he will try to talk to Iwaizumi when they get out of class this afternoon. They have the same class then, so Oikawa can just catch Iwaizumi on his way out.
When lunch ends, Oikawa trudges toward his class. He has four more classes till school ends. He almost falls asleep in math, and English just gets more confusing. English verbs suck. Actually, the whole English language sucks. Nothing makes sense.
By the time the last class rolls around, Oikawa is ready to commit. But the teacher announces that they will be doing a partner project on an important historical event in Japanese history. She announces the partners, and to Oikawa's surprise and delight, he is partnered with Iwaizumi. This gives his an excuse to hang out with him even more. The bell rings, and the only homework is to meet with your partner and decide on a topic. Oikawa picks up his bag and stuffs his books in it.
"Hey, Oikawa." Oikawa turns around to see Iwaizumi standing a few steps behind him.
"Oh, hey, Iwaizumi. What's up?"
"I was wondering if you wanted to go to the library with me so we could decide on a topic and maybe get some research done or write up a plan or something," Iwaizumi says. Oikawa smiles at him.
"Of course!" Oikawa slings his backpack over one shoulder and starts to walk out of the room. The walk to the library is relatively short, but Oikawa learns a lot about Iwaizumi during the stroll. Apparently he plays volleyball for the school, and today is his only day off directly after school.
"So, we will have to do most of the work on the project in the evening. Is that okay with you?" Iwaizumi asks.
"Yeah! I don't really have much to do, so any time works." Oikawa smiles at the ground. This means that they will definitely get to know each other better. They reach the library and head toward the non-fiction section. They spend about an hour there, looking through different history books and finally deciding on a topic. They did some initial research and then called it a night. They walk home together and Oikawa learns that Iwaizumi only lives a few streets down from him.
"So we can figure out when to meet next tomorrow, okay?" Oikawa asks.
"Sure. Here, I'll give you my number so we can communicate if anything comes up." They exchange numbers and say their goodbyes. Oikawa smiles as he walks up his driveway. Iwaizumi is so nice.
That night, Oikawa had a dream that he was watching the stars. There was someone with him, but he couldn't remember whom. He woke up with a feeling of floating. During school, he counts down the minutes till history. His friends keep asking him why he is so distracted, and he just answers that he didn't get much sleep last night. At lunch, Iwaizumi glances at Oikawa once, but doesn't say anything. Oikawa sighs. He really hopes that he builds a friendship out of this project.
History class arrives, and the teacher gives them half the class to discuss the project with their partners. Since they already did a lot of that yesterday, Oikawa and Iwaizumi spend a lot of the time just talking.
"So how long have you been playing volleyball?" Oikawa asks.
"Since junior high. Do you play any sports?" he responds.
"Nah. I used to play volleyball a long time ago, but I didn't like it much." Oikawa vaguely remembers going to a couple practices and Iwaizumi being there. They did go to the same junior high, after all. That might have been when Oikawa's crush first started. It's been a while, that's all Oikawa knows.
"So do you have any other hobbies?"
"I play the piano. I wouldn't say I am that good, though."
"Oh that's cool," Iwaizumi says. "I've always thought being able to play an instrument would be cool, but volleyball takes up a lot of time and I have just never gotten around to it. How long have you been playing?"
"About eight years."
"Oh wow! Then you must be kinda good! That is a long time," Iwaizumi says, surprised. Oikawa looks down at the desk and blushes.
"I guess so," he says with a small laugh.
"So, do you know who your soul mate is?" Iwaizumi asks, changing the subject. Oikawa bites his lip.
"No, I don't think so... Last night I had an odd dream though. I was watching the stars with someone I know, but I can't remember who they were for the life of me. I have never had a dream with someone I know in it," Oikawa says apprehensively. This could be it.
"Wow. I had the same dream last night, too." Iwaizumi laughs a little.
"Huh, that's odd..." Oikawa smiles a little. Oikawa mentally sighs in relief.
"Do you... Do you think we could...?" Iwaizumi starts, leaving his question open. Oikawa is holding back a scream, literally. His eyes widen a little.
"Maybe... Um, we could, uh, check in tomorrow?" Oikawa's voice shakes a little.
"Yeah." They spend the rest of the class writing down notes on their topic. At the end of class, Oikawa awkwardly waves goodbye to Iwaizumi and Iwaizumi smiles at him.
Later that night, Oikawa gets a text from Iwaizumi.
"Hey! Sorry things got all awkward today." Oikawa smiles at the text. This guy was unbelievable nice, if it had been Oikawa, he would have been too awkward and shy to say anything about what happened earlier.
"No, it's fine. It was partly my fault for mentioning my dream."
"Well it was also my fault for asking. I just wanted to say, I like hanging out with you and I don't want anything to get awkward, okay?" Oikawa lets out a breath he had been holding. He hoped that Iwaizumi was texting him about something positive, and he had been right.
"I like hanging out with you, too! I'll try my best not to be awkward. :)" Oikawa texts back.
They keep talking late into the night. At 11:30 they bid each other goodnight and Oikawa falls asleep with a smile on his face. Just talking to Iwaizumi makes him happy. Imagine if they could actually be soul mates...
Oikawa's dream starts out in a small café. He sits alone at a table for two. A few minutes pass like this, and Oikawa realizes that he is conscious of what he is doing. Everything seems relatively real, except for the fact that everyone's faces have shadows over them. This is always the case in dreams; you can only see your soul mates face.
A boy walks into the café, but Oikawa doesn't notice him until he pulls out the chair on the other side of the table. He looks up and his brown eyes are met with two olive green ones. Both of the boys freeze.
Oikawa was staring into the eyes of the one and only, Iwaizumi Hajime.
~~~~~~~
They stare at each other in shocked silence. Iwaizumi's hand drops from the chair.
"You're here," Oikawa's voice comes out quieter than he had intended. Iwaizumi slowly sits in the chair opposite Oikawa.
"I guess this means..." Iwaizumi looks at Oikawa with wide eyes.
"Yeah." Oikawa shakes his head with a smile on his face. He starts to laugh a little.
"What?" Iwaizumi asks indignantly.
"Sorry, I-" Oikawa laughs more. "I just never thought that it could really be." Iwaizumi looks at him with a confused expression. "Okay, well I have liked you for a while now, but I was too afraid to talk to you a lot until recently. Cuz you know, what if we weren't soul mates? I didn't want to confirm anything, but then we got put at partners and I just figured, why not? I'd have to find out someday." Oikawa runs his hand through his hair and looks up to see Iwaizumi smiling at him.
"You're such a nerd." Oikawa just laughs at this.
"I know that." Iwaizumi starts laughing, too.
"So what now?" Iwaizumi asks.
"Well, I guess we start dating? I don't know!" Oikawa smiles at the other boy. Iwaizumi gets up and walks over to Oikawa's chair.
"I guess that's a good place to start. But how about we go on a nice walk now, we have the whole place to ourselves. We can figure out everything when we are actually awake." Oikawa gets up and takes Iwaizumi's hand. That's always a good place to start.
Thanks for reading!! I'd love suggestions :)
