Chapter 4; Happy Birthday

Hadrian was shaken waken gently by Wednesday until he woke up.

Wednesday - "Good morning and happy birthday Hadrian. Mother, Father, Pugsley, Grandmother, Lurch, Uncle Fester, and Thing are waiting for us downstairs. Would you like help picking an outfit?"

Hadrian smiled and shook his head at his sister.

Wednesday - "Alright. Come to my room when you are finished getting dressed and we will go to the kitchen together."

Wednesday climbed down the ladder. Hadrian dragged his near dead body from his cushy bed to his wardrobe. He ended up wearing a light blue poet blouse, black pants, and pre-laced boots. Struggling to strap his cutlass to his belt.

Hadrian - "Wednesday?"

Wednesday - "Yes?"

Wednesday appeared out of nowhere behind him and attached the sword for him.

Wednesday - "Let's go. Everyone is waiting."

They both climbed down their ladder and walked hand in hand to the kitchen.

Gomez - "Good morning! Happy birthday my son! What a joyous day it is!"

Outside, a monstrous thunderstorm raged. Hadrian loved thunderstorms, but hated to get wet, so he enjoyed them through the safety of a window. Hadrian and Gomez had a little sword play while Wednesday spoke to her mother. Thing jumped on Hadrian and helped the boy disarm Gomez.

Gomez - "Thing, you crafty fellow."

Thing perched on Hadrian's shoulder as he sat in between Wednesday and his Uncle Fester.

Fester - "Happy birthday you little monster."

Hadrian gave his beloved Uncle a side hug and sat quietly, keeping score of Thing and Fester's thumb wrestling.

Grandmama - "Breakfast time! I made your favorite, yak stew!"

Hadrian ate his favorite stew with with a toasted garlic roll. After they, Hadrian ran after Pugsley to their small Quodpot field. It was a simple two-v-two match with Hadrian and Gomez vs Pugsley and Fester. As short and nimble Hadrian is, the quod never exploded with him holding it, having successfully tossed it to either his uncle or brother.

They didn't use brooms, deciding to play on foot. Hadrian didn't win the game, but he was happy enough to never had the quod explode on him. Pugsley, Fester, and Gomez were grinning ear to ear, faces covered in soot. Hadrian laughed as they wiped their faces with wet cloths.

Grandmama - "Hadrian, would could come here?"

Hadrian jogged to the kitchen where his slightly insane grandmother smothered him in eleven kisses and tight hugs.

Grandmama - "Want to help me make lunch?"

HAdrian excitedly bobbed his head and took a bat from Lurch and followed his grandmother outside.

Grandmama - "Alright Hadrian, we're making salamander sandwiches for lunch today. Whichever one of us gets more salamanders is the winner, ready, go!"

Thing tagged along and followed the small boy to a large tree. to a tree and found four black and red salamanders. He then ran to the swamp. He didn't find any there, but he did find a fenny snake. Thing helped strangle it while Hadrian beat it with his bat. Thing stuffed the dead snake into Hadrian's sack.

Hadrian helped Thing grab the bag strap before running to the house. Morticia and Wednesday greeted them at the door. He opened the bag to show off his more than successful hunt.

Morticia - "Wonderful job, Hadrian. Wednesday, go help your brother in the kitchen. I'll go fetch Grandmama children."

Wednesday held out her hand for Hadrian. Hadrian excitedly grabbed her hand and raced to the kitchen. They laid out the four salamanders and snake just as their Grandmother strutted in with a smug grin.

Grandmama - "Hadrian, I caught twelve salamanders. What about you?"

Wednesday - "Hadrian got four salamanders and a fairly large fenny snake."

Grandmama - "What?! Dang it, I should've prohibited the swamp. Fine, you win sonny. I'll make the Fenny Snake Fillet, and you can make the sandwiches."

Wednesday sat by and watched her brother make eight sandwiches with seared salamander meat, lettuce, tomato, strips of seared fenny snake, and thin slice of avocado.

Wednesday - "Hadrian, would you like my help getting the food to the table?"

Hadrian nodded and smiled brightly at her.

Two plates per child and Grandma, the three set the table.

Wednesday - "Lurch, please go fetch Mother, Father, and Pugsley."

The butler groaned as he walked out of the dining room. Soon, everyone was eating the sandwiches prepared by the birthday boy.

Gomez - "Hadrian my boy, what adventure would you like to go on after lunch?"

Hadrian pointed toward his father's potion lab

Gomez - "Potions, of course! Then we can have a match of Quidditch."

Hadrian was lifted onto Gomez's shoulders and they made their way to Gomez's potion room. They didn't brew they potion right, but they weren't stuck to the wall again so Hadrian counted that as a win. Gomez and Hadrian dragged Pugsley and Fester outside. Fester summoned their brooms and they had a two v two Quidditch match; this time Fester was on Hadrian's team. Hadrian and Gomez were the seekers with Fester and Pugsley as beaters' and chasers.

The match ended one fifty three to two hundred and eight. Hadrian was proud that they won and that he caught the snitch.

Fester - "Great job Hadrian!"

Pugsley - "You'll be an awesome seeker for you Quidditch team!"

Hadrian grinned brightly at his brother and signed his thanks.

Morticia - "Boys, grandmama says it's time for dinner."

Hadrian looked at the  setting sun, not realizing how long their game carried on. He was lifted onto Pugsley's right shoulder and carried inside.

Pugsley - "Here he is, the Quidditch Winner of the evening!"

Morticia - "Amazing work darling. For tonight's dinner I made sweet and sour scorpion soup, a juicy gopher loaf, and fresh biscuits. Dig in."

Everyone took a good heaping of everything and laughed merrily through the entire dinner. Hadrian even made two separate bowls of gopher loaf for Socrates and Hedwig. When everyone finished eating, Wednesday walked in and out of the kitchen holding a covered tray.

Wednesday - "Happy birthday, little brother."

Wednesday reveal a large, beautifully decorated black forest cake with black cherries. Hadrian didn't like candles, so none adorned the top of the cake. After receiving a large slice, Hadrian cut everyone else's slice. He then unwrapped his presents. Two cauldrons, one diamond and one solid gold from Pugsley; a ton of baking supplies from his parents; three different cookbooks from his grandmother, one for sweets, one for parties, and one for seasonal gatherings; a new machete and sharpening stone from his Uncle, and a piece of paper from Wednesday.

"Dr. Alvin Murphy, 4-16-1992?"

Wednesday - "A muggle doctor in California who agreed to do your top and bottom surgery next year."

Hadrian dropped the paper and hugged his sister tightly.

Hadrian - "Thank you Wednesday! This is the best present ever!"

Wednesday - "Well, this present takes place next year. I do have a present for here and now."

She held out a black box with a white ribbon. Hadrian opened it carefully, tucking the ribbon into his pocket. A two way mirror encrusted with emeralds, sapphires, rubies, and diamonds lay in the box. Wednesday pulled a similar mirror from her dress pocket.

Wednesday - "This way, even we don't end up in the same house, we have a way to contact each other."

Hadrian - "Thank you Wednesday!"

After the present ceremony, everyone dug into their cake, often complementing Wednesday on her choice of bakery.
