Broken promise

Dean stared at his phone with a pained expression, hesitating to answer it.
"What would he want?" Sam whispers.

Dean frowns, slowly lifting his phone and answering it as he raises it up to his ear.

"Hello Dad?"

Everyone could hear a muffled reply but couldn't make out the words as John kept speaking. Eventually, Dean puts the phone down with a drawn expression. Sam feels Gabriel tighten his grip on him as they wait for Dean to tell them what the hell John had said.

"Dad wan-wants us home now to finish packing," Dean murmurs sadly.

Sam sighs, a shuddering and sad sigh as he presses his lips against Gabe's soft hair and manages a strained smile for the smaller boy. "I'll see you tomorrow at school, okay? We'll say goodbye then."

"You promise that you'll definitely show?" Gabriel asks in a surprisingly small voice.

Sam nods, blinking furiously to stop the tears. "I promise, Gabey."

Gabe presses his lips softly against Sam's lips, then the taller moose boy stands slowly and nods to the rest of the group.

"Thank you all for this awesome night, even if we didn't get around to watching Sherlock."

Everyone murmurs goodbye and the Winchester's leave their friends behind with a heavy heart. The ride home was as quiet as the drive to school that morning, Dean tried engaging Sam in a conversation, but the younger boy stayed silent.

~~~~~
Sam ignores their father, running up to his boxed up room with tears falling from his eyes. He was already finding the move hard and they hadn't even left yet.
Dean gives his father a curt nod, not even stopping to enjoy the fact that John was in one of his rare good moods.
He jogs up the wooden stairs, stopping at Sam's door and opening it silently. He looks inside to find Sam curled up on his bed, staring silently at the opposite wall.
"Sammy?"
No reply came from Sam.
"C'mon Sammy, you should get some sleep or finish up packing, then you'll have more time with Gabe tomorrow."
Still no reply.
"Sammy? Please say something."
Sam briefly lifts his head, eyes sad as they meet Dean's, then he goes back to staring at the wall.
Dean sighs, but leaves his brother be as he goes to finish packing the last of his stuff. He reaches his room, chucking random stuff in the final box before his hands come to a rest on a framed photo in his bedside drawer.
It was a photo of him, Cas, Gabe and Sam, Lucifer, Mikey and Charlie had jumped into the background as Jo had taken the photo.
He stares at the photo for several long moments, eyes tearing up before he clears his throat, no time for that.
Sam on the other hand, he was currently curled up on his bed, drifting in and out of sleep as he worried about the next day. He didn't worry about packing, everything in his room was done.
~~Time skip... Don't kill me :3 ~~~
Sam was dragged out of his happy, fluffy dream by the sound of whispered shouts. Rubbing his sore eyes, he checks the time on his phone. 3:23 am. Sam creeps out of his room, his sleepiness was quickly replaced by alert wakefulness as he realized Dean and John were arguing in the hallway.
"You said we'd leave after one more day at school," Dean was hissing.
"It's easier on everyone this way," John said angrily.
"What's going on?" Sam asked quietly.
"We're going now, get your things," John said, making Sam do a double take. Weren't they supposed to leave after school? How would he say goodbye to Gabe?
"This isn't how you said it'd be, you said we could say goodb-"
"I don't need you crying over a bunch of fags," John snapped, his voice raising ever so slightly.
Sam doesn't speak once, his mind felt dazed and clouded. This wasn't supposed to go like this. He turns and runs back into his room, digging through his bag until he found what he had been looking for. The present he was going to give Gabe.
It was a pair of dog tags that took a geeky form, one was a tardis and the other, a pair of golden wings. He had planned on giving it to a smaller boy after school, but now that wouldn't happen.
Wiping away his tears, he was tired of crying, Sam places the chain back in the small pocket at the back of his bag and zips it up.
He starts moving the three boxes of his stuff down to the Impala and shoves them in the trunk, eyes stinging. Finally, he shoulders his bag and looks back at his empty room once more before walking down the stairs for the final time.
Dean met him at the stairs, his green eyes betraying the heaviness in his heart.
"You ready Sammy?"
Sam shakes his head mutely.
"Yeah, me neither."
Sam follows his older brother out the front door, their dad was still in the house, finishing up the final look over. Sam pauses once, looking over at the Novak's dark, quiet house with a pang in his heart.
"I'm so sorry Gabe," he murmurs under his breath.
~
Gabe had taken forever to fall asleep, he was dreading the next day, when he would have to say goodbye to his Samoose.
A sudden, loud shout from next door made him sit upright fast. Gabriel carefully slides out of bed, padding over to the window and pulling the curtains back slightly.
He peeks out, seeing lights on next door. This meant he could see through one of the windows, where John stood arguing with Dean.  Curiosity got the best of Gabe, and he found himself sliding the window open.
Gabriel wriggles out of the window, slipping off the windowsill and hanging for several seconds before letting go and landing in the thankfully soft bushes below.
He pops out of the bushes, scuttling across the grassy ground to the fence between his house and the Winchester's.
The sight of his Samoose looking at his house, face mournful in the porch light, made Gabe furrow his brows. What the hell were the Winchester's doing. It almost looked like.... they were leaving now, in the middle of the damn night.
Gabe stood up, not having any plan in mind but feeling like he had to do something, and stumbles towards the two Winchester boys.
"Sammy?" His voice was still rough from sleep and confusion.
His eyes met Sam's, who was looking at him sadly. Gabe watches as Sam glances back at the Impala as a grown man's voice rumbles through the cool night air.
'I'm sorry,' Sam mouthed to Gabe, who was watching tears run down the moose's cheeks.
Gabe stood there, feeling like an abandoned, sad puppy as he watches Sam and Dean climb into the Impala, slamming the doors shut. The Impala comes to life, headlights shining in the darkness as it rumbles out of the drive and down the street. Then it turned around the corner at the end of the street, and disappeared from his view. The Winchester's were gone.
Gabe walks numbly up to the front of the now empty house, unsure to whether this was a bad dream or reality. Or maybe he was just hoping that it wasn't really happening.
Something small lying on the welcome mat drew his attention. Gabriel bends down, picking up the glinting chain to find a pair of geeky dog tags.
One, a Tardis, had Sam's initials on its back. The other, a pair of golden wings, had Gabe's initials on the back. Gabe clutched the chain tight as he reads the note left beside them, smiling at Sam's familiar, scrawled handwriting.
Gabriel,
I am so glad you were so persistent after we first bumped into each other, otherwise I would of missed out on knowing someone incredible like you. I am even glad to have known your family, despite the fact that Lucifer is constantly making Satan jokes.
Gabe sniffled, giggling despite the growing tears as he reads this part. From there on out, the handwriting grew messier, as if rushed.
And despite my fear of this exact situation arising. I'd still rather have known you than not, so thank you, my Trickster, for bringing light and variation into my life.
Please, go on and live a great life leave me as a memory and don't try looking me up. My father won't allow it and I don't want you hurt. Even though we will most likely never see each other again, I won't forget you.
I'm so sorry this had to be how the end of our story plays out.
Forever your moose,
S.W
Gabriel sat there reading the note several times over, not noticing the hot tears running down his cheeks as he sits slumped against the front door.
He wasn't aware of how much time had passed until the sound of footsteps approaching up the gravel drive drew his attention, making him look up at the pink-streaked, dawn sky.
Castiel stood at the edge of the porch, a solemn expression on his face as he meets Gabe's sad eyes. Lucifer, Michael and Samandriel all stood behind him with similar expressions as they realised what had happened.
"They left, didn't they," Castiel asked, his blue eyes brighter than usual as tears gleamed in them.
Gabriel nodded slowly, disbelief making its way into his heart. They weren't supposed to be gone now, he was supposed to have one last day of annoying Sammy.
Lucifer's eye's flash, wrapping his arms protectively around Michael as the boy started to sniffle. Alfie ran off, no doubt to tell everyone else what had happened.
"Samoose, why," Gabe whispered hoarsely, rubbing at the tears streaking down his cheeks.
He looks down at the dog tags clasped tightly in his hand.
"You promised me you'd be here, you promised that you'd show to say goodbye."
It wasn't long before Chuck and Becky were on the scene, pulling their depressed sons away from the empty house and back home. Gabe sat down numbly on his bed, unable to look at the photos on his cork board as he tries to comprehend what had just happened.
Castiel, on the other hand, had grabbed his school stuff and was currently walking to school. He felt like it was all surreal, surely Dean hadn't left.
He felt shocked at the thought of never seeing Dean again, an empty feeling in his chest. Charlie jumped out in front off him, a small smile on her face.
He saw it drop quickly as she saw his facial expression.
"Cassie?" Her voice was soft.
"They're gone, the Winchester's left this morning."
"What? But I thought...."
"They lied, probably just didn't want to say goodbye," Cas turns away, making a beeline for the library.
~~~~~

Sam sat silently in the back seat, eyes sore from crying as he stared silently out the window.

Dean had tried getting him to speak several times now, but he seemed to have given up when Sam continued to stare at the passing country side sadly.

He really missed his Trickster, and he really, really, hated his father for making him brake his promise to Gabe.

A/N:

Hey guys!

Don't worry, this isn't the end of the book, I still have an idea for another chapter, maybe even a two part, epilogue styled chapter.

Who is up to date with season 13? What are your thoughts on it's plot arch so far?

*Gives out free donuts 🍩🍩🍩*
*Gives out squiggles as extra apologies (and also because Lucifer demands it because of some army)* ~~~~~~

Peace out, Wayward readers 🌈🌈
