{My Hero Academia} Working On Special Moves

"Stop taking my bacon!" Bakugou growled at Hailey, as he stabbed the piece of bacon, preventing it from leaving his plate and into Hailey's mouth.

"Then stop complaining that it's so greasy!" Hailey retorted, "It's also what you get for ridiculing my chocolate milk!"

Kirishima patted their shoulders in an attempt to keep the peace, "C'mon you guys, it's too early to start this." He chuckled awkwardly.

It was weird starting out the day in a dorm room. Hailey was so used to waking up as early as 6:40 in the morning to get ready for school, but now she was able to embrace the extra hours of sleep. Since the school was only a five minute walk from the dorms, Hailey felt that finally life was giving her a break from some excess stress.

Her classmates were relieved to see her returning to her usual self. Some were worried that the whole villain event would have traumatized her to a point where she would have changed in personality. She did, but not to the extent that her classmates would have noticed immediately. Hailey's sense of self worth depleted to a low point where she didn't see herself as powerful or worthy to be among her peers. She made a note to if anything were to convince her, she would speak to her teacher about what was on her mind.

--------

"I believe that I've said this already, but your main focus this summer is obtaining provisional hero licenses." Mr Aizawa began, the students sensing his stress over the subject.

"Yes, sir!"

"Do not take this lightly," He warned in a stern tone. "A hero license means that you're responsible for human lives. You can imagine that the exam to receive one is very difficult. Only fifty percent of students pass the tests required for these permits each year."

Hailey felt her stomach drop at Mr Aizawa's words. Her fingers began to fiddle and twitch as she used her right hand to clutch the end of her black fabric wrist brace. Hailey felt her stress levels begin to rise fast, she almost wished that she had her visor to tell her what her body stats were, especially her heart rate.

"It's that hard to get a provisional license?" Mineta questioned, sounding worried.

Aizawa's eyes narrowed, "In order to prepare, today you'll concentrate on creating something new."

Suddenly, the classroom door slid open and when the students turned their heads to see who was there, the teachers Midnight, Ectoplasm and Cementoss entered the room.

"Two ultimate moves." Mr Aizawa finished, adding to the now determination that filled the room.

"ULTIMATE MOVES?!" Kirishima and Kaminari exclaimed in excited shock.

"An exam is a normal school thing!" Mina and Kaminari cried in happiness.

"But this is total hero work!" Kirishima and Sero concluded with the same enthusiasm.

"When we say 'ultimate', we mean a move that will ensure your victory against any opponent." Ectoplasm stated.

"An action so unique to your identity that no other person can hope to copy it. Simply put, you need to lean in to your strengths." Cementoss continued.

"Your moves represent who you are. These days, most pro heroes have an ultimate move. Those who don't are fools." Midnight added, holding her pose.

"This may sound abstract, but we'll explain more as the day goes on." Aizawa concluded and instructed his students to change into their hero costumes and to meet the teachers in Gym Gamma.

--------

After leaving the classroom, Hailey couldn't shake the words of her teachers. At first, she felt determined and inspired to make up her own ultimate moves, but at the same time, Hailey felt discouraged.

She wasn't in the best physical shape since she spent most of her time in the hospital and Hailey was weary of the state of her wrist.

Finally, she found herself alongside her classmates in the giant gymnasium. Kirishima and Todoroki by each of her sides.

"How are you doing, Hailey?" Todoroki questioned, feeling concerned at her lack of upbeat and enthusiastic nature. "You look more worried than excited for this."

"Yeah, don't look so glum, you're great at this kinda thing." Kirishima added and then grinned, "Or do you already have some ultimate moves that you've been saving up?"

Hailey gave her friends a half smile, "No, I don't, sorry to disappoint. I'm just- I'm not sure if I'm going to come up with something. I haven't really used my quirks over the summer and I might.." Hailey stopped herself and shook her head, "Never mind, I should just be focused on doing my best and being creative with it!" She exclaimed, as she convinced her one to changed to a determined one.

"That's the spirit!" Kirishima cheered and fist pumped the air.

Hailey smiled and did the same, while Todoroki did the more awkward version of a fist pump.

Hailey laughed at the two, "We'll need to practice that more."

Then it was time to tune into the teachers explaining what the students would be doing for their ultimate moves exercise. From what she could understand, the Gymnasium was specifically designed for Cementoss' quirk, he would be able to create whatever terrain he'd desire. Hailey thought it was really cool, but not at the same level as Midoriya.

Iida was quick to sharply raise his hand and ask permission to ask a question, after Cementoss introduced the students to the area.

"What is the advantage of having ultimate moves for our provisional exam? May we know your reasoning?" He asked, very quickly, as if it had been a question eating at him for a while.

"That's two questions. Calm down." Mr Aizawa answered, monotoned at his student.

"Pfft." Hailey attempted to contain herself from giggling at the two.

"The job of a hero is to save people from all sorts of dangers. Crime, accidents and natural or man-made disasters. Of course the licensing exam analyzes how well you're able to deal with such things." Mr Aizawa explained to his students, "It won't just be fighting. Your ability to gather information and make quick decisions will be judged. In addition to how well you communicate, cooperate, and lead others. Every year a new test is used to evaluate these qualities. "

"One thing is especially important; if you want to be a pro hero, you must be able to prevail in battle. If you're prepared, you don't have to worry.  And those of you with an ultimate move will have stronger results." Midnight added.

Hailey began to feel herself worry again, but not a second later felt that Cementoss has read her worried aura.

"Your circumstances should not dictate the results of your future battles. Learn to stay consistent and you will be a great asset on the front lines." He encouraged.

"Your ultimate move doesn't necessarily have to be an attack." Ectoplasma continued, "Take Iida's Recirpoburst for example, this sort of temporary boost in speed is valuable enough that it falls into the category of excellence that we're looking for."

Iida trembled as it dawned on him, "You mean I've been doing an ultimate move all along?"

Hailey grinned and patted Iida's shoulder, "Don't sound like you just realized you did something bad, Ten! Of course our Class Rep would be smart enough to already be ahead of the game." She winked as she offered him her encouraging words.

The students now understood why the ultimate moves were a priority, Mr Aizawa reminded the class that even though the training camp was interrupted, the students still had the remainder of the summer vacation to work on their ultimate moves. As Mr Aizawa explained this, the teachers behind him began to create a unique terrain for the students' use.

"In addition, you should think about how you can improve your costumes, especially now that you have a better understanding of your quirks. I expect each of you to go Plus Ultra. Do you have it in you?" He finally asked.

"Yes sir!"

--------

Hailey sat on the ground, her legs criss-crossed ad she pondered heavily.

'An ultimate move? I mean I've thought about it before, even in the hospital.. I already use echo waves, but that's more of a signature move, plus mom and Gran know how to- no just mom now.' Hailey sighed as she remembered that she was down a family member. She looked down at her lap sadly. 'Mom probably went through a bunch of emotional shit with Gran passing away and me being captured...'

Her thoughts were interrupted by Bakugou killing one of Ectoplasm's clone with his explosions and asking the original for a new one.

'Good Christ.'

Suddenly, hearing her classmate's comments about how they've all thought about their ultimate moves before made Hailey feel something again. Everyone went through something, but they persevered in order to get where they were today. It wouldn't be fair to her classmates or teachers that she sat around throwing herself a pity party. Hailey wasn't about to send out invitations.

She was motivated to become stronger.

'My shit can wait for now, I've got getting closer to being a hero to worry about.' Hailey thought as she dismissed her emotions and decided to bottle them up.

"Hey Mr Ectoplasm." Hailey called as she stood to her feet.

The pro hero looked to her, "Finally got some ideas?" He questioned.

Hailey nodded, "You could say that, but your clone better have some good earplugs." She smirked, "I haven't done it for awhile, but I guess now's the best time to work on it, right?"

Ectoplasm nodded and created a close for her to work with.

Hailey then puffed out her cheeks as she had a sudden realization with a self dread expression.

"Maybe we should go outside, my wavelength quirk isn't exactly safe around dense materials and I don't wanna hurt my classmates." She suggested.

"Are you referring to the attack that you used during your final exam?" Ectoplasm questioned.

Hailey nodded after giving the pro hero a look of surprise that he knew that.

"It does need work, since it almost damaged your vocal cords from lack of output control. But your wavelength quirk, it requires a push off in order to be released, correct?" Ectoplasm inquired.

"Yeah."

"And you can channel different types of wavelengths from the spectrum?"

"Yeah."

"As well as output different emitter quirks with others? Like Todoroki?"

"Okay, I feel like you're trying to make a point by asking things about my quirk that you already know." Hailey deadpanned.

"I am trying to make a point, there's more to your quirk than you think. As well as what you can do. Your quirk allows you to be very collaborative with its attacks, but that doesn't mean that you have to rely on others for attacks. Your other attack will be the same." Ectoplasm explained, but Hailey took his directions as vague instructions.

"So what? I'm sorry, I think I understand, but I've been known to misinterpret things."

She could feel the pro hero roll his eyes under his costume.

"Have you always had light blue waves when you use your wavelength boosts?" Her teacher questioned.

A light bulb finally turned on in Hailey's brain, "OHHHHHH! I get it."

Hailey began thinking, "Only when I use my strength and speed boosts, which my mom explained it to me but I still can't remember what it's called. Anyway, my echolocation type wave in kinda grey, translucent. Radio, what I can use to interrupt radio signals are more static-y and grey. I haven't been exposed to a lot of other wavelengths, probably too dangerous." She said out loud, but then paused when she recalled what she heard the last time a Roselle had attempted that. "Y-yeah, too dangerous."

Ectoplasm sensed Hailey's sudden discomfort and moved on with their conversation.

"With that logic, couldn't you be able to conjure up quirks that you've felt?" Ectoplasm hinted.

Hailey never thought of that, not believing it to be possible.

"That would make sense, since I've converted them into a wavelength form and wavelengths go on for awhile before they weaken." Hailey's eyes widened in excitement as she finally understood what she needed to do.

"Okay, let's try this out!"

-----------

Hailey closed her eyes and focused on the memory of the heat she felt when Todoroki and her used their 'Heat Wave' move and whenever she felt the high temperature of fire. She attempted to channel it through her fingers and then suddenly pushed her hands to the ground and released a wavelength. She opened her eyes to see Ectoplasm's clone still standing where he was before, completely unfazed.

"Did you feel it?" She questioned, hesitantly.

The hero shook his head, "No."

"Not even like a little bit of heat?" She tried.

Again, he shook his head.

Hailey sighed and hunched her shoulders in defeat.

"Dammit." She moaned, feeling bad that this was her 8th attempt at the attack. "I can't do anything right."

"How's it going over here?" All Might asked, as he approached the two.

Hailey looked up in shock, surprised to see him here. "Oh hi, All Might."

"Hailey seems to be having difficulty rechanneling previous quirks that she has worked with." Ectoplasm explained.

"I see, maybe you should ask those quirk users how they use their quirks to better understand and handle them?" All Might suggested in an encouraging tone.

"Yeah, I could ask Sho how he uses his fire and maybe his ice." Hailey pondered on the idea.

"I don't know how open to the idea you'd be, but perhaps-" All Might looked like he hesitated with what he wanted to say and retracted it for something else. "Maybe you should be thinking more  of what you can do internally. I think there's another good reason that you keep a good eye on your heart rate."

Hailey's eyes lit up and she grinned, "Yeah, I get it! My pulse works like a push off force too, like whenever something is hurt internally, it pulsates. Thanks All Might! I think I can work better with this."

"I'm happy to help, Young Roselle." All Might said as he went off to help the other students.

Hailey then turned to Ectoplasm, "Thank you too, Ectoplasm. I get what you guys are saying. Maybe now this'll be easier."

-------

Hailey ran quickly down the halls of the school, her shoes loudly tapping against the hard flooring.

'I hope I'm the only one that has this idea.'

As she finally turned the corner, Hailey's feet skitted and she noticed that Midoriya had beaten her to where she was going.

She panted and began to walk towards him, "Hey Izu." She greeted.

Midoriya turned to her and smiled, "Oh hi, Hailey." He greeted back, "Are you okay, you look pretty tired."

Hailey waved her hand, "Nah, just me being out of shape." She then grinned, "I suppose you aren't here to have some free lemonade." She joked.

The green haired male gave her a confused look, "What?"

"I mean that I'm guessing we had the same idea to come here for some gear to help us come up with some ultimate moves." Hailey explained, lightly blushing due to her joke not really working out.

Midoriya nodded, "Yeah, I've been having a tough time coming up with some moves, since my arms are so damaged."

Hailey's expression fell and her heart felt like it dropped to her stomach.

"What do you mean?"

Midoriya's eyes widened at Hailey's shocked and bewildered expression.

"Izuku, what do you mean that your arms are so damaged? Why am I just hearing about this?" She asked quickly, feeling her heart rate increase from the sudden panic Hailey felt.

"Hailey- Hailey, it was my fault for overusing my quirk past its limit. I-I can still use them, just not at a great amount of power." Midoriya grabbed Hailey's arms gently and attempted to reassure and calm her down.

"It was because of that villain attack at the training camp, wasn't it?" Hailey asked lowly.

Midoriya felt hesitant to answer, but nodded his head.

Hailey's hazel green eyes looked away from Midoriya for a moment in a moment of hesitation before she gave him a hug.

"I'm sorry for worrying, but you don't give me much of a choice when you do these kinds of things. I just really care about you and want you to achieve your dreams." She weakly smiled at her friend as she looked up.

Hailey pulled away and wiped her eyes, "You'd think that I'd be in better control of my emotions by now." She muttered, before suddenly shedding the sad demeanor. "So, what do you think you want changed on your costume?" Hailey asked with a more genuine smile.

Midoriya felt himself reluctant to leave the previous topic dismissed like that, but decided that maybe his was Hailey's way of setting her priorities. Deal with the important hero stuff first, then cry after. It didn't seem emotionally healthy, but Midoriya didn't know what else to do.

"I was thinking about some sort of brace for my arms." Midoriya answered, looking down at his hands. "Something to help me wield my power better."

Hailey nodded her head, "Hm, very smart, emBRACEive." She giggled, "But for real, that's a good start and knowing Hatsume, she'll be able to help you come up with more features or gear."

Midoriya nodded, "Yeah, that's what I was hoping for." He then asked, "What about you?"

"Welp, I was thinking to have a speaker thing like Present Mic's to help control my wavelengths and pitch when I use my vocal quirk and wavelength quirk together. Also just some more emitter devices on my palms and feet, to strengthen the output. I don't know if I want to ask for a staff, since my wavelength quirk relies on a push off to be emitted, I could use it to push off of when I'm falling." Hailey explained, very excited about her gear.

Midoriya smiled, "That'll be really cool!"

"Oh, hey there, Deku! Hailey!" Uraraka called out. "I was just wondering where you were!"

"Don't run in the halls!" Iida scolded her.

Both turned towards her and Iida approaching them.

"You here for costume improvements too?" Uraraka grinned.

"Oh hi Ura/Uraraka-"

The two were cut off from an explosion from the development room that pushed them back.

(Oh hi, yeah this is fine)

A heavy cloud of smoke covered that section of the hallway, leaving both on the ground and unable to see.

"Ow, ow, ow, ow, owie, owie, ow." They could hear Hatsume wince.

Hailey coughed, feeling sandwiched between the floor and a person. "What the hell?" She wheezed.

Powerloader was able to emerge from the room and cough from the smoke as he scolded Hatsume. "Ya know, you shouldn't try to mix everything you can find in the lab together like that."

Hatsume chuckled in a high pitch, "Failure is the mother of invention, Mr Powerloader. Thomas Edison said something like that once." Before coughing again. "Even if something doesn't work like I've envisioned it, that doesn't mean that it's a waste of time."

Powerloader continued to scold Hatsume for almost destroying the lab, as the smoke began to clear out.

It was suddenly revealed that Hailey wasn't laying on the floor, but poor Midoriya, and Hatsume happened to land on top of her.

Hailey felt her cheeks heat up real fast at the closeness she was with her friend, "I-Izu, are you okay?!" She shrieked, seeing that his eyes were closed.

But when his eyes opened his face turned bright pink, "A-AHH!"

'S-so close. CHEST-'

"At least I landed on something soft~" Hastume cooed, making Hailey now feel annoyed.

"Hatsume, get off of me before I kill you!"

-----

"Oh, sorry about the sudden explosion. It's been awhile, Class 1-A, right?" Hastume questioned as the students were now in the development lab with her. "Uhh, I forgot all of your names, except yours, birthday buddy." Hatsume grinned at Hailey.

"U-uh, Izuku Midoriya. H-" Midoriya answered bashfully from the situation he just got out of. Hailey sighed and patted his shoulder in an attempt to calm him down.

"I am Tenya Iida! The man you tricked into being a walking advertisement during the sports festival!" Iida scolded, making aggressive hand motions.

"'Birthday buddy?'" Uraraka questioned Hailey.

Hailey smirked, "Yeah, found out after the sports festival when I went to check up on my visor, after it got cracked from my internship." She explained.

"Speaking of which, I have some great ideas for you, Hailey!" Hastume exclaimed, grabbing her hands in her own. "The rest of ya, never heard of, I've got some new babies to develop, so bye~!" Hatsume then began to drag Hailey into the lab.

"Gah! Wait- Hatsume!"

"Wait a second, please!" Midoriya cried, "I wanted to ask Mr Power Loader about improving some elements of my costume."

Hatsume froze at the fluffy green haired male's plea.

She quickly turned her head back to the trio, "Wha... wha... WHAT?"

Suddenly she dropped Hailey's hands and got real up in Midoriya's personal space, "YOU CAN COUNT ME IN!" She exclaimed.

Hailey noticed Midoriya avoid eye contact nervously from Hatsume and sighed, "Hatsume, you're going to give the poor boy either a heart attack or aneurysm. Get in here before Mr Power Loader gets mad at you."

"HASTUME!" Power Loader shouted, making Hailey think 'spoke too soon', "It's fine that you go in and out of the studio all day since you're in the dorms, but if you don't follow my instructions; you'll be banned for life." He warned her.

"Oh-h, hello." Midoriya greeted.

"I heard from Eraser Head that you're here to upgrade those costume for your new moves, right? Come in." Power Loader welcomed the students.

The trio admired the lab, Hailey smiled, knowing that she was like that when she first came in.

"Now hand over your instructions, please." Power Loader instructed the students. "They should have been in the case that your costume was delivered in. I've got a license to make costumes, so I'm allowed to do some mild tinkering with those that were made out-of-house. For small changes and repairs, I can simply report what I altered to the design company. They'll do the paperwork for me. But for major changes, we'll have to fill out an application and ask the design professionals to make adjustments for us. After that's completed, the government will make sure the new costume meets certain standards. Then it'll be sent here, since we work with the best design agencies, there's usually a three day turn around."

Hailey groaned, "Well looks like I can't get those emitters then."

"Why not?" Midoriya questioned.

"My mom's agency is a costume company and a hero recruitment company, Hondashu was the company that made my costume. Since she's not around right now, I can't get those upgrade and additions." Hailey explained, feeling discouraged.

Power Loader thought for a moment and began typing on his large-scaled computer. "Since you've been here before, I already know about your costume, Roselle. What were you thinking for those emitters?" He questioned.

"Just some type of emitter device on my palms, feet and wrists, just to better control my output of wavelengths. And something like Present Mic has on his neck, but not as bulky. I need to be able to better control those wavelength and that device to emitt different pitches." Hailey explained to the teacher.

"I see, those actually wouldn't be too much-"

Suddenly, Hailey felt Hatsume's wandering hands on her arms.

"Hatsume, I'm warning you." Hailey glared. "I am not wearing that giant speaker you made last time."

Hatsume pouted her lips, "If you weren't so picky about your looks, it would have worked just fine. But~ I did down-size it to something that you could use~" Hatsume purred and suddenly attacked something around Hailey's neck, she gasped and moved her jaw and head to make sure it wasn't uncomfortable.

"There! Now use your attack!" Hatsume cried with excitement.

"Um excuse me, do you wish to not hear?" Hailey deadpanned before deciding to give off a smaller pitch. She aimed it a shield that Hatsume suddenly brought out.

Hailey sucked in a breath and felt her vocal cords vibrate as she released them and emitted an almost deafening sound. The shield vibrated before crumbling into tiny chunks.

Hailey's eyes widened at what had just happened and Hatsume cheered in delight and squeezed Hailey in a tight hug.

"I knew it would work!!"

The others were in awe as well. Midoriya turned to Power Loader and asked if it were possible to have a brace that would protect his ligaments.

The Pro said that he would be able to make something rather quick, which excited him and his classmates. But Midoriya was forced to endure Hatsume's over enthusiastic approach to helping him as well.

He and Iida were suddenly wearing Hatsume's dangerous gear, which didn't take long for them to realize.

As Iida began yelling at Hatsume, who answered for her reasoning, which sounded bizarre.

But when looking back at Midoriya, it looked as if he had made a mind blowing discovery. He quickly and excitedly expressed how he wanted Iida to teach him something.

Hailey felt her expression soften and she let herself smile at Midoriya as he explained to his friends his thoughts.

"You have that expression again." Hatsume pointed out to Hailey, seeing the fond look she gave her classmates -no.

"What expression?" Hailey asked, looking away from her classmates to Hatsume.

"Back at the sports festival, when we won the cavalry battle, you gave Midoriya the same look." Hatsume explained, then had an evil grin, "I get it~"

"HATSUME!" Hailey cried, as she eyed the invention that she carried. "That looks like it could explode." She began to back away to the door with her friends.

"Oh you just have to handle this baby with care." Hatsume cooed.

-------

Four days had passed and Hailey felt more confident in her abilities.

The equipment she requested had come in and she was ready to test it out.

Hailey only had her combined quirk attack practiced and ready, but despite asking Todoroki about channeling his quirk, she still wasn't able to bring it out on her own. She attempted to subside her discouragement.

She demonstrated her quirk to the clone of Ectoplasm by destroying targeted pieces of cement. Hailey felt better when Ectoplasm admitted that he was impressed and asked what she was going to call it.

"I was thinking 'Vocal Wave', quick and simple." Hailey answered.

"Very good, and how is your progress with rechanneling different quirk waves?" All Might inquired, as he approached the two.

Hailey sighed, "Well with Shouto's quirk, not great."

"Try and think of something else, what other quirks have you been strongly exposed to?" Ectoplasm question.

Hailey began to think.

'What quirk would that be?'

'Can't be mom's, it's the same as mine..'

'What quirk?'

'Well there is-'

Feeling sudden flashbacks to her childhood appeared in her head.

Hailey remembered the other quirk that she'd known her whole life.

The one that was used to make a point.

The one that belonged to .. him.

Vividly, she remembered how she struggled to move her limbs when it was used on her. Sometimes only able to move her mouth in when it was convenient.

Without knowing it, Hailey's pulse was strong enough alone to emit from her now trembling legs. It wasn't until All Might questioned why he couldn't move and Ectoplasm yelled at Hailey to snap out of her mind space.

Hailey gasped and blinked, which happened to release him from the paralysis. Ectoplasm's clone feel to his knees and All Might hunched over to catch himself.

"A paralysis wave, that is really amaz-" All Might began to commend, only to see Hailey's terrified form.

"O-oh my god.. I-I-I didn't mean-" Hailey sputtered, completely filled with panic. "I-I-I'm so so-sorry-" She began gasping for her breath as her anxiousness began to cave in.

"What's going on here?" Mr Aizawa questioned, rushing over at the sight of his student in distress.

"She was able to conjure up a paralysis effect with one of her wavelength attacks." Ectoplasm explained.

"She used her quirk on us and then started to hyperventilate." All Might added, feeling concerned for his student.

Aizawa grasped onto Hailey's shoulders and slowly helped her to the ground, so she wouldn't hurt herself if she fell from passing out. "Hailey, you are okay, nothing's going to hurt you here." He attempted to calm her.

"But-but.. I was-was the one who-who could ... h-hurt someone!." She gasped and clutched her clothing above her heart.

Her teachers looked at her in shock and empathy.

"Hailey; you aren't going to hurt anyone, you aren't your father and you will never be him! You understand?" Aizawa was stern with his words.

"B-b-But-"

"You're going to be a hero, alright? You're gonna make his quirk known for being on the hero side, as your own." Mr Aizawa stated, being able to calm down his student.

"S-Sorry for that." Hailey apologized, as she tightly gripped her arms to stop them from trembling.

"That's alright, you didn't do anything wrong." Mr Aizawa encouraged.

"I'm sorry for putting you in that situation, Young Roselle." All Might apologized sincerely, "I didn't realize what this quirk would do to you."

"No, it's fine, you just wanted to help me become stronger." Hailey waved it off. "I just don't think that I want to use it that much.. is that okay?" She asked sheepishly.

Her teachers nodded and said to do what she was comfortable with.
