{My Hero Acadamia} Final Exams Pt 2
As the three days of the written final ensued, Hailey always felt that she was on the brink of collapsing after walking out of the classroom. Her brain was being heavily worked, but she continued to push through it the best that she could. Hailey was determined to attend that training camp and to prove it to herself that she was smarter than she gave herself credit for.
Midoriya always checked up on her, seeing that on the second day, Hailey fell into the bushes as she lost consciousness when leaving the school after the first day. Everyone looked out for each other, it was nice, but Hailey avoided listening to them reviewing the answers that they put on their tests. It was a routine she had from her old school, those conversations either made Hailey feel very idiotic or very smart (which was rarely the case).
After the written portion ended, the class found themselves awaiting for their practical portion of the exam.
"Now then, let's begin the last test." Mr Aizawa began, beginning in a group of the other teachers.
Hailey felt that her prediction of the teachers being the main opponents for the practical exam were more true. Why else would they all be there in the first place if not?
"Remember, it's possible to fail this final. If you wanna go to camp, don't make any stupid mistakes." Mr Aizawa explained.
Hailey adjusted her eye gear, the settings giving her a visible read on her body's status. Her heart rate was at its usual higher than normal with the anxiety kicking in.
"Why are all the teachers here?" Jirou finally asked, which gave Hailey and the other students the answer that they've been dying to know.
"I figured that all of you would have gathered information about what you'll be faced with during this part of the exam." Mr Aizawa answered.
"We're fighting those big old robots!" Kaminari cheered excitedly.
"Fireworks! Sm'ores here we come!" Mina exclaimed happily.
Mr Aizawa glared at the students.
"Actually, this years test will be completely different for various reasons!" Principal Nezu cheered, popped up from Aizawa's scarf.
Hailey was taken aback from his sudden appearance, almost backing into Todoroki. "Holy crap."
"You're changing the tests?!" Yaoyorozu asked, feeling disheartened.
"The tests have a new focus," The Principal began to explain, as he climbed down from Aizawa's shoulder with his scarf. "There will be hero work of course, but also teamwork and combat between actual people! So what does that mean for you? You students will be working together in pairs- one odd group of three, and your opponents are one of these esteemed UA teachers! Isn't that fabulous?!"
Everyone looked in shock.
"Additionally, your opponents and partners have been decided previously. They were determined by my discretion, based on various factors including; fighting styles, grades and interpersonal relationships." Mr Aizawa continued to conclude the basic information that the students were to know, "First, Yaoyorozu and Todoroki are a team, against me." Mr Aizawa gave a colt look towards the two.
"Then we have Midoriya paired with Bakugou." The two looked at each other in surprise. Hailey shook her head at how well she doubted that team would do.
"Their opponent is-"
Just as Mr Aizawa was about to introduce him, the dramatic drop in of All Might ensued. Hailey's eyes widened, as many other of her peers' did too.
"I am here- to fight!" He announced.
"We're up against All Might?!"
"Oh they are so dead." Hailey muttered, feeling internal dread for her green haired friend.
Principle Nezu continued to list off what the remaining teams were, who they were fighting and when they fought.
Hailey contemplated the teammates that she was put with. Jirou and Koda. They were up against Present Mic in the seventh match.
It made sense, all of them shared a vocal or type of wavelength quirk. Hailey pondered on how they could use their quirks together, perhaps being able to amplify a more powerful attack.
Hailey failed to stifle a laugh when Jirou combated Present Mic's cockiness with a quick quip back.
"Aren't you just the announcer guy?"
Koda sweated, not wishing for his teammate to upset their opponent.
"Hey PM, looking forward to it anyways, it'll be a good match. Make sure to teach us something, 'Kay?" Hailey grinned, feeling surprisingly confident.
"You got kid, so you better stay on your toes!" Present Mic responded, pointing finger guns at the trio.
The teachers went on to explain that the students should regard them as villains in this test, it would better improve their decision making. Aizawa called out Midoriya, Todoroki, Iida and Hailey for the options to flee or fight. They remembered the Hozu Incident, they acknowledged what their teacher was hinting at and accepted what was expected of them.
All Might pulled out some cuffs that the support course provided the teachers, the extra weight would decrease their stamina's, giving the students a fighting chance.
"Oh these are heavier than I thought!" All Might commented as he put the cuffs on and his wrist fell a bit under the sudden weight.
Again, Hailey did her best not to laugh at her teachers, had to stay professional. Stop being so goofy, All Might! Trying to train to be a hero here!
Mr Aizawa then told his students that they could either watch or strategize with their partners, he then walked off with the other teachers.
Hailey gave Kirishima a fist pump, "Hey Kiri, you got this in the bag!" She encouraged, "You too, Sato!"
"Thanks Hails, we'll be sure to bring our best!" Kirishima grinned and walked off with his teammate.
———
Hailey told her teammates that she wanted to check on Kirishima's battle and see who was all watching.
"I'll try and find some other strategies to work with while I'm there." She told Jirou and Koda.
The two nodded, "Sounds good, come back when you can."
Hailey grinned and walked towards the monitor room, where she saw Midoriya and Uraraka watching the fight on a screen.
"Glad to know I'm not the only one who wanted to observe." She said, and stood beside Midoriya and behind Recovery girl.
"How's this one going?" She asked.
"It looks like they might win!" Uraraka smiled.
Midoriya shook his head, "Actually no, it looks like they won't get far with their current strategy."
Hailey looked at the screen to see Kirishima and Sato punching through Cemetos' walls.
"I see what you mean, Kiri has limits to his durability and Sato for his strength. If they keep attacking head on, they'll wear themselves out." Hailey caught on, feeling bad for her spikey haired friend.
"This rest must be based on us recognizing our weaknesses and overcoming them. Mr Aizawa put those two on a team for a reason." Midoriya pointed out.
Recovery Girl nodded her head, "Indeed, in order to strategize against your opponent, you have to consider your quirk comparability with them."
Hailey then remembered what Midoriya told her about her quirk when she went to study with him.
"You would be even more powerful if you found an in between - if you were to use your two quirks together-"
"Then I'd be just like Present Mic." She muttered, holding her thumb and index finger between her chin.
Midoriya turned to her, "What are you thinking about, Hailey?" He questioned.
"Just what you said about my quirks. I've never tried it, but I might just have to use them together." She answered before turning and rushing out the door to speak to her teammates again.
Just as she rounded the corner, she heard that Kirishima and Sato were knocked out and didn't pass.
"That's all it took?!" She questioned in disbelief.
"Hailey, did you find out anything?" Jirou asked, feeling a bit overwhelmed by the first team's results.
Hailey looked back at her and nodded, "Yeah, I noticed it before, but all of our quirks match up on a wavelength and vocal scale like Present Mic's. I almost want us to use our quirks together, as an amplify boost, but I'm not sure if they would be effective if we aren't close to Present Mic.." she explained, "I have an idea for an attack, but I should probably save it for a last resort since I haven't practiced it a lot."
Jirou and Koda nodded.
"Okay, so then we can use our quirks together to act as a combined attack." Jirou thought aloud.
Hailey nodded and they continued to plan a strategy.
———-
Popping her head in once more, she noticed Iida and Ojiro's match was on. Hailey began to hysterically laugh at Iida and Ojiro's fusions technique.
"Jesus Christ that is the best thing I've seen all day!" She bellowed, clutching her stomach.
As the three watched Iida begin to outrun almost of the traps, the ground began to crumble and with Iida's quick thinking, he gave his teammate a boost, strong enough to get to the exit gate.
"Oh wow!" Uraraka exclaimed.
"Looks like someone has been taking notes." Hailey joked.
Midoriya turned to her, "Yeah, that's a move that you've done a lot, right Hailey?"
Hailey nodded, "Yep, sometimes its best to assist your teammate that is more likely to achieve victory. Ten did some good quick thinking there, and Ojiro made a quick attack that went with it. Amazing what people can accomplish together, huh?" She smiled.
She then laughed at the sight of Iida being stuck in the ground.
"Oh my god, I can't right now."
Hailey felt a grin on her face as she remembered whose match was next.
"Oh yay, it's time for Sho's match! Knowing him, he'll for sure have a few plans on how to defeat Mr Aizawa with the help of Yao-momo!"
The three then watched as the said students appeared in the screen, ready to commence their exam.
Then the exam began, and it was no surprise to see Todoroki explain a plan for him and Yaoyorozu.
Hailey gasped when she saw what Yaoyorozu was creating.
"Aww those Russian nesting dolls are so cute! I haven't seen any since I've visited my Baba!" She gleamed, causing her two classmates to look at her in confusion.
"'Baba'?"
"It's Ukrainian for Grandma and it's what I call my Great-Grandma, who happens to originate from Ukraine." Hailey explained.
"I didn't realize that you were part Ukrainian." Uraraka pointed out.
"Past the point, but yeah, I've got a cute little circle of heritages in my veins." Hailey shrugged and continued to watch her friend's exam.
"Pffft he's a ninja oh my god, I don't know how much more of this I can take!" Hailey wheezed at the sight of caltrops beneath Todoroki. "I mean bad for Sho, but gosh that is just funny. I'll stop talking."
Midoriya sighed at Hailey before seeing her chew her lip. He noticed that Hailey did that to herself often, whenever she was feeling overwhelmed for herself or others, she would give off a lighthearted mood to distract from her real emotions.
"Sho what are you doing?" She muttered, seeing her classmate being left hung up by their teacher. "It's like you're in the corner, thinking about what you've done and being held up as bait."
Hailey lightened up when Yaoyorozu returned to assist Todoroki instead of fleeing to the gate like he wanted.
Upon seeing what was actually contained in the Russian nesting dolls, Hailey grinned.
"Hell yes girl!"
"Wow that was amazing!" Uraraka squealed in excitement.
Todoroki swearing made my day btw (Wattpad won't let me show you the clip! ;-; but him dropping an f bomb really made my day 👌🏻
Just as they ran, Todoroki created a large ice wall just like he did during the Sports Festival.
"Oh wow, I didn't think he would do that again!" Midoriya breathed in surprise.
"Why isn't Mr Aizawa going after them?" Uraraka asked Recovery Girl.
"It might be because he overused his eyes." Midoriya pondered outloud.
"He's in front of the escape gate, better to guard it rather than go after them. It's like jumping into a cattle pen with a calf and overprotective heifer, the calf will run to safety while the heifer will go after the threat of her baby and attack it." Hailey explained to them, only to have more confused looks at her analogy.
"What?"
"I get it, but why use that example?"
"You know what, I'm trying to sound smart, let me feel like it for a moment!" Hailey retorted, feeling embarrassed that she did that. Some of her classmates knew she was from a rural community, just not where.
Seeing the plan that Yaoyorozu made pull through made Hailey ecstatic for her classmates.
"My my, looks like he is a big softie after all." Recovery Girl commented at Mr Aizawa's actions that led to him being captured by his students.
———
Just as Uraraka's battle was ending, Hailey noticed Jirou and Koda at the door.
"Hailey, we're getting called up." Jirou pointed out.
Hailey sighed, "Okay, better get it over with them." She then gave Tsuyu and Midoriya a smile, "Wish is luck, and tell Ura that I said that she's badass."
They nodded, "Okay."
"Good luck you guys."
She then followed her teammates to their designated stage.
————-
"A forest huh, didn't expect that." Hailey sighed, then looked at Koda, "Neh, Koda, maybe you'll have some luck with your quirk here!" She grinned, causing him to nod at her enthusiasm.
"Let's avoid combat with Present Mic as much as possible." Jirou instructed, "Let's head straight for the escape gate."
Hailey and Koda nodded in agreement.
"Yeah, from what I know about his quirk, it's crazy powerful at any distance. It's like a loud speaker that's broken but the bass is super powerful." Hailey pointed out.
"So it's decided, let's hit it."
They all then began to run.
All of a sudden the deafening sound of his quirk caused the team to clutch their ears and stop running.
When there was a moment of it disappearing, Jirou looked at Hailey.
"Is there anyway for you to counter his attack?" She asked.
Hailey shook her head, "I wish, but I can see where he is with some echo wavelength." She suggested.
"Sounds good."
Hailey then stomped on the ground, sending a translucent wavelength across the perimeter. When she felt some bounce back, she frowned.
"He's by the exit gate, just as I thought." She grumbled.
Just then Jirou looked at Koda, "Hey Koda, you can control animals, right?" He nodded. "Okay well the get some birds to attack him!"
Koda then began to use his own sign language to say that even if he could, Present Mic's voice would make the animals run away.
"Well damn, what else can we do.." Hailey muttered as she hit her nail on her thumb.
"His shouts make my eardrums feel like they're gonna burst." Jirou commented, making a Hailey feel more pressured.
They continued to run.
"There's no way that we could get close to him, unless you mind telling us about that last resort you had, Hailey." Jirou prompted.
Hailey sighed, "It's a combination of my quirks, I haven't tried to mimic frequencies, but now that I've heard Present Mic's quirk first hand, I think I can give him a taste of him own medicine. My wavelengths would prevent you guys from suffering from the damage of it." She explained, feeling less than confident in her tactic.
Koda gestured that the idea was good and that Hailey should give it a try.
"You think I could do it?" Hailey asked.
"We won't know unless you try!"
Just then Present Mic used his quirk again, Hailey couldn't understand what he was saying due to the pain in her ears.
"Dammit I can't- Take this."
"I don't know how much longer I can."
Just after a moment, Present Mic's voice quirk died off again.
"I don't know about you guys, but I think we should hurry this up, I don't wanna go deaf." Hailey commented, half joking.
Jirou looked around before noticing an ant on a rock. She gasped and turned to Koda.
"Hey Koda, you can control bugs and stuff right? Look at this, an ally!" Jirou suggested, but Koda paled at the sight of the insect and shrieked.
"Huh? Koda, are you okay?" Hailey questioned at the sight of her teammate.
Jirou moves her hand closer to Koda before he screamed again, ran away and hid behind a tree.
"So he doesn't like bugs.." Jirou deadpanned.
Just then Present Mic sent off another loud voice attack.
"Jirou!" Hailey shouted.
Her classmate took the hint and inserted her ear jacks into Hailey's forearms and her amplifier steroes. Then Hailey released a strong wave that almost completely cancelled out Present Mic's quirk, to the point where he was even pushed back a few steps.
"Koda, I need you to tell us if you can control bug or not!" Jirou shouted at him, feeling frustrated that they hadn't progressed further yet.
Koda gave her a thumbs up, and Jirou looked back at Hailey.
"Do you think that you could use your last resort to distract him and we'll handle the rest." Jirou suggested.
Hailey nodded, "Yeah, I guess. Just tell me when."
Jirou then used her earphone jacks to destroy a rock, which held many other insects under them.
Koda shrieked again at the sigh of them.
"Koda, I know it's scary, but we're here for you. Being a hero means facing your fears, one step at a time! You can do it!" Hailey encouraged him with a smile.
"That's right, you can ensure our victory Koda, we believe in you!" Jirou added.
Present Mic's quirk rang out again, causing the students to cover their already bloodied ears.
"That's e-NOUGH!"
As Hailey let a loud, deafening high pitched sound escape her lips, the wavelength boost that she emitted from her hands that cupped her mouth released the attack. A sonic scream. It had shocked Hailey and due to the mixture of power, she was pushed onto her back to the ground.
But the attack was strong enough to catch Present Mic off guard and push him back a couple feet. His ears were ringing just as the students had been. It was almost like he got hit back by his own attack, but contrasting Hailey's amateur attack wasn't as static or irregular.
Koda had a moment of realization before getting into his forearms on pleading with the insects to attack the pro hero.
"You can talk?!" Jirou shrieked in surprise.
They then heard Present Mic screaming in agony as bugs climbed over his body. Jirou and Koda looked at each other in joy, before noticing their teammate.
Jirou hurried to her classmate's side at the sight of her sitting on her knees and cupping her throat with her hands in what appeared to be shock.
"Hailey are you okay?!" Jirou asked with concern. Koda has even looked at the two with worry.
Hailey tried to make a sound but began to cough and hack up from blood.
"Oh my god! We need to get you to Recovery Girl!" Jirou exclaimed, quickly looking back to see if their opponent had recovered and was ready to attack once more.
Hailey tried to clear her throat, she began to play easy charades with her classmates - I sure if they would understand sign language. She pointed to her throat, to hint that it was in pain and she couldn't talk for awhile. But she nodded and gave them a thumbs up with her weak smile.
Jirou voices back what she understood from the gestures until she got them right and then began to run to escape gate with Koda and Hailey.
————
"You could have completely blown your vocal cords with that attack!" Recovery Girl scolded the girl as she removed the tongue pressed from Hailey's mouth.
She smiled awkwardly, trying apologize with some sign language.
"I'm not healing your voice completely, just enough so you won't suffer permanent damage." Recovery Girl explained, "You'll be able to talk, but don't go doing any singing, screaming or speeches for a few days. You come back to me tomorrow and we'll see how you're doing."
Recovery Girl then used her quirk on Hailey before dismissing her and leading her to the monitor room, where Hailey's team and classmates were waiting for her.
Everyone looked relieved to see her alright.
"I'm glad to see you're doing better! How's your voice?" Jirou questioned.
As Hailey opened her mouth to answer, Recovery Girl interrupted her.
"She can talk, but won't be saying more than a few words for the rest of the day. That silly attack may have been strong, but her doing it out of the blue like that could have completely ruined her vocal cords." She huffed.
"Thanks Recovery Girl." Hailey grumbled, her voice sounding scratchy and pained.
"What did I just say?!" Recovery Girl glared.
Hailey sighed and hugged her two teammates, a way to thank them for all the work they put in to help them pass.
"Sorry that I kinda gave you the idea to use your quirks like that, Hailey." Midoriya apologized.
Hailey shook her head, "S'all good, gotta live and learn."
Just then, Todoroki walked in following Kirishima who had a carton of chocolate milk in his hand and a water in another.
"Hails! Good to see you walking around alive and well!" Kirishima cheered and handed her the carton of chocolate milk.
Hailey grinned and began to sip on the drink through the straw that hung out.
"That attack, I've never seen you do something like that before." Todoroki began, "Did you hurt yourself badly?"
Hailey shrugged, "Totally almost broke my vocal cords, but I'm good." She answered.
"What did I just tell you?!" Recovery Girl scolded yet again.
Hailey rolled her eyes and looked at the screens to see that the 8th match was ending.
"Hey Deku isn't it getting close to your match?" Uraraka questioned him.
"Yeah, but I wanna watch all of our classmates fight. Even though some of them didn't pass, they fought until the very end. It makes me feel stronger just by watching. Our classmates are amazing!" Midoriya proclaimed, his eyes shimmering with light.
Hailey felt her heart swell with pride at his words, she knew that one day Midoriya would be the one inspiring others to fight until the very end for what's good.
"Most of us anyways." Yaoyorozu and Iida deadpanned at the sight of Mineta's match.
"What's he doing?!"
"Is he seriously giving up now?"
"How pathetic."
"Literally so done with him."
"Is he literally crying blood?!"
"He's that jealous of Sero?!"
The fact that Mineta was able to pass the exam stunned Hailey to the point where she was reconsidering what the fuck was happening anymore.
"Izu, do your best." Hailey whispered to him as she caught him leaving. He gave her a determined look and a thumbs up before running to his place.
Let's just say that watching her dear friend face off against his idol with his childhood 'friend' made Hailey's heart race with suspense. She was scared for Midoriya and Bakugou, they were up against the Number One Hero.
Hailey noticed how awkward Midoriya looked as he caught Bakugou glaring at him.
"I don't doubt that this might be the most difficult of the opponents to be against." Todoroki commented, watching the screen.
"It's All Might, you wouldn't expect any less from the Number One Hero." Kirishima added.
"Izu has a very similar quirk to All Might's and there's no doubt that Bakugou is one of the strongest in our class." Hailey muttered.
As Midoriya looked to try and reason with Bakugou, he fell to the ground after receiving a punch in the face from his so called teammate.
"Hey- that bastard-" Hailey growled, hold to be held back by her friends.
Then All Might has send a powerful wind in their direction, blowing apart the entire street.
"He-he decimated the whole street." Hailey breathed in shock.
As the battle continued, the struggle between working together was very apparent for everyone watching Midoriya and Bakugou against All Might.
He was completely destroying them, he had trapped Midoriya under a satellite and had punch Bakugou so hard that he had thrown up.
It was almost horrifying to watch for the students.
As it looked to be that All Might would give Bakugou a finishing blow, Midoriya rushed to the scene. Hailey let out a puff of air at the shock of Midoriya punching Bakugou instead of All Might.
"I mean I'd be all for it any other time but this is the one time he shouldn't be punching Bakugou."
To sum up the rest of the battle, it was emotional to say the least. So many moments where it looked at Bakugou and Midoriya had a good fighting chance and when All Might looked to be too cruel. In the end, they pushed themselves past their brink and passed.
Hailey felt so much pride towards them. All of her classmates, everyone had worked so hard.
Later in the day, Hailey followed Recovery Girl to her office back at the school to get some medicine for her throat, as well as a wack in the head for speaking more than Recovery Girl recommended.
"And What did I tell you about that? You need to train more if you're going to use your quirks like that! Not everyone has two quirks so treat them well!" Recovery Girl once again was scolding her.
The entered the room to see Midoriya and Bakugou laying on the beds with All Might in the room.
"Right, I'll handle you after these boys. Looks like someone knows how to do everything but to hold back his punches!" Recovery Girl glared at the pro hero.
"Hailey, you came too?" Midoriya asked, his voice hardly above a whisper. He sounded drained.
Hailey nodded, "Hey Izu. You did so good out there." She said quietly as she approached him. She crouched down and gently brushed his green locks from his face, since he was laying on his stomach from his back injury.
"Thanks, it was really tough, did you see me hit Kacchan?" Midoriya inquired, sounding a bit loopy.
Hailey giggled, "I did, don't be mad but I laughed a bit at it."
"Oh wait, you aren't supposed to be talking, sorry." Midoriya apologized as he remembered her injury.
"Recovery Girl's got it covered." She smiled.
"Maybe if you'd listen to me when I say not to talk a lot, maybe then you'd understand why I'm giving you medicine. I'm getting you a gross grape flavoured just for that!" Recovery Girl said as she examined Bakugou's wounds.
