{MHA} Not What Was Expected

Finally the day to return to school was upon Hailey, as well as Midoriya.

'Izu's probably more relieved than I am to be back.' Hailey noted in amusement as she walked to class with Todoroki and Kirishima by her side, them trailing behind Midoriya, Uraraka and Iida.

Midoriya was aggressively apologizing to everyone once reaching the classroom.

It kinda freaked Hailey out, so she just awkwardly laughed.

"Time to take your seats everyone." Mr Aizawa ordered, a dark aura around him as he glared at Midoriya.

Every was quick to comply and sit down in their desks to listen to what their teacher had to say.

"Since Midoriya is back, we'll go more into detail about what the work studies entail." Mr Aizawa began, then turned to the door, "Go ahead and come in."

As the door opened, Mr Aizawa introduced the guests to the class. When walking in, the tallest strutted with pride, while the other two followed.

'It's like a train of confidence levels.' Hailey thought in the back of her mind, her attention enthralled by the guests' entrance.

"I suggest you listen carefully as they point out how work studies and internships differ. These three are third years at U.A. They rank at the very top of our student body. You may know them as the Big Three."

'Fuck yeah, I've only heard about them.. they're like local celebrities.' Hailey thought in awe.

"The best of the hero course." Sero breathed, also in awe.

The other students made comments about how great of a reputation the three upperclassmen had, but Mr Aizawa was ready to get a move on.

"Get to it, introduce yourselves briefly. Let's start with Amajiki."

Amajiki gave an intense look, that rattled Class 1-A, but then he began to tremble and shake.

"It's no good." Amajiki said, "You two go ahead, I just can't. Even if I try and imagine them as potatoes, I can see their human bodies. I know that they're still people. No words are coming out. My mind's blank and my mouth is dry. I can't say anything. I wanna..go home." He then turned away and faced the wall.

'Oh, precious boy, I wanna protect you.' Hailey clutched her shirt where her heart would be and gushed in her head.

The light blue haired girl let out a laugh,"Come on, Amajiki! You need to have the heart of a lion, not a kitten. You know even though you're a human. Get what I mean?" She encouraged, then turned back to the class. "This is our kitten, Tamaki Amajiki. And hi, my name is Nejire Hado! I'm supposed to talk about work studies. You first years have a really exciting time ahead of you."

Nejire then blinked and approached Shoji's desk. "Hey, wait, hold on. Why are you wearing a mask? Is it cuz you're feeling sick? Or just..trying to look cool?" She inquired, trying to look more closely.

Shoji cleared his throat and attempted to answer, but then Nejire noticed Todoroki and asked how he got his burn scar.

Hailey sweated, hoping that she wouldn't be questioned about the father being a villain thing. Even though Nejire would probably ask, then move on with no answer.

Luckily, as Nejire finished asking other students random questions and laid eyes on Hailey, Mr Aizawa's annoyance at the third year's antics grew.

"This is completely irrational." He said, gruffly.

"Oh, there's no need for you to worry, Eraser Head." The still unintroduced member of the Big Three nervously assured. "I'm up next and I'll get the audience refocused!"

Then rather enthusiastically, the blonde exclaimed, "The future's gonna be..!"

There was an awkward silence among the students, as the blonde waited for them to finish his sentence.

"Gonna be what?" Kaminari asked.

"Plus Ultra?" Hailey squeaked, nervously raising her clenched fist halfway.

"Awful! That's your part, guys!" The blonde exclaimed. "Oh, crap! My call and response was a total fail."

"What the fuck is happening?" Hailey muttered as she sweated.

"These guys seem like total weirdos, is this some kind of joke?" Sato whispered to Koda and Tokoyami.

"Their strangeness is palpable." Tokoyami remarked.

"Okay, you guys look like you have no idea what's going on." The blonde pointed out.

'Neither do you!' Hailey screamed in her head, 'What happened to the intimidating Senpai's that walked into our classroom?!'

"I guess we are just third years who just showed up in your classroom to explain a program that's completely voluntary. I can see how you'd get confused by that" The third year noted.

'Thank you! Finally some information!'

The third year pondered out loud, "Hm, you guys got your provisional licenses as first years, right? Huh! This batch of new students has proven to be pretty darn energetic! So the problem is, you must not have a sense of humour. That's why my joke didn't land."

Hailey raised an eyebrow at his speculation, 'Where's Baku when you need to tell a guy who can't land a joke that we don't have sticks up our asses?' She deadpanned.

The other two third years looked at their classmate as they realized what idea had just popped into his head.

"Don't do it." Amajiki warned him.

"Heads up, the rad new plan is all you first years fight me at once!" The blonde declared.

Hailey face palmed herself and questioned how they were supposed to learn about work studies by battling a third year.

"I could probably ask literally anyone else, rather than getting my ass handed to me by a third year." Hailey mumbled.

The third year was able to convince Mr Aizawa that it was a rational way of putting things into perspective for the first years.

"Fine, do whatever you want."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Before they knew it, Class 1-A were in their gym uniforms and before the third year in one of the training gyms.

The blonde third year was also in his training uniform, stretching all of his limbs.

"Is he for real?" Sero questioned.

"Oh yeah, totes real." He answered.

"Mirio, you're impossible." Tamajiki grumbled, his head against a new wall. He too in his gym uniform.

(A NAME INTRODUCED, FUCKING THANK YOU BBY)

"It would have been simple enough for us to just tell them." Amajiki commented. "'This is what it's like, here's what we learned from it'."

"I agree." Hailey exclaimed, "Not that I'm trying to question your methods, Senpai. But what is this going to teach us about work studies that you couldn't just tell us?"

"Not everyone has your level of drive. Plus, think about it; what if some of them can't recover after fighting you? No one wants to spend the next few years in a hospital bed." Amajiki added.

"I bet he's just trying to psych us out." Kirishima noted, cracking his knuckles.

"Lesson one from fighting villains is that you never underestimate your opponent, don't forget that." Hailey pointed out, and stretched her arms.

Then Nejire spoke up as she played with Mina's horns, " Hey, listen up. It's story time. Long ago, a student got frustrated in class and quit being a hero, and it was terrible for everyone. Did you know that?"

'Wtf, this seems random.' Some of the class thought.

"So, Togata, I know our job is tough, but you better make sure you know what you're doing. Be careful, okay?" Nejire warned her classmate.

"Let's think about this." Tokoyami piped in, "You're obviously much further a head than us, but we've fought pros before."

"Not to mention we took down some legitimate villains." Kirishima added, "I don't think you need to worry about hurting us."

'Oof- Kiri is coming for your throne, Baku.' Hailey thought, seeing Kirishima's cocky behaviour.

Mirio nodded his head, "Mm! Heard, but you're gonna have to show me that's the truth. Now, who's gonna start this party?" He challenged.

"I've got this." Kirishima declared, hardening his arm in a battle position.

"No. I'm first." Midoriya suddenly decided.

"You stole my thunder!" Kirishima cried .

"Izu did say he wanted to catch up." Hailey shrugged and got into a readied pose. "Start this thing off, Izu. Then let's work as a united front."

"Heads up, he's fast. This'll be a good lesson." Mr Aizawa alerted his students.

"Oh, the problem child!" Mirio exclaimed, "Yes, this is perfect! I've heard you got plenty-a fire in ya."

As Midoriya bent down, green lightning surrounded his body as he charged up his quirk.

"The close combat team should surround him first thing!" Sato told his classmates, as they all charged up their quirks as well.

"Let's do this! We've got ourselves a new mentor. Thanks for the opportunity, man!" Kirishima exclaimed in pure confidence. "The opportunity to kick your butt!"

'Fuck, we're too cocky. I don't even remember what his quirk is.' Hailey grunted.

Then as Midoriya leaped into action, the most surprising and unthinkable thing occurred.

The dude's clothes fell off of his body.

Some of the students screamed in terror at the sight of the pure naked man in front of them.

"Jesus Christ!" Hailey screamed, Iida being quick to cover her eyes. "I'm blind! Traumatized! What the absolute fuck, man? He-he's commando!"

"Why did your clothes fall off?!" Sero cried.

"Oopsy! My quirk's kinda tricky!" Mirio explained, apologetic and in embarrassment, as he tried his quickest to pull his pants back up.

Midoriya tried to use the opening for a kick, but his leg phased through Mirio's head.

Hailey was able to pull away Iida's hand to see what Mirio's quirk was. "Aha! He can manipulate his body so he can phase through objects!"

As Midoriya slid to a stop, the other students used their long distance quirks on Mirio.

"Are you dumb?!" Hailey exclaimed, "I just said he can phase through things!"

Then as the smoke cleared, Mirio was no longer where the students last saw him.

"Huh? Where did he go?" Iida questioned.

Then Mirio appeared behind Jirou.

"I think I'll start by taking out the long distance fighters!" He declared.

Jirou screamed at the sight of his naked form and the other students rushed to attack Mirio again, believing that he had a warping quirk.

Hailey frowned at the fact that no one was listening to her and was able to sneak away to gain some distance between her and Mirio. She watched as Mirio was able to knock out the majority of her classmates.

"Power!" He yelled, intimidating the only students left standing.

Hailey gulped down her fear and hesitation.

"This is what happens when people don't listen." She grumbled, a glowing glare on her face.

"I think that's it for the long distance fighters." Mirio noted, nonchalantly. "All that's left are the ones who specialize in close quarters combat."

As her classmates trembled at the possibility of Mirio having two quirks, Hailey just huffed.

"You've worked hard on that quirk of yours, phasing through the floor, right?"

"Aha! Someone's finally got it." Mirio cheered, "You're the villain kid, right?"

Hailey looked down at her feet, "Is that what they're calling me?" She questioned, clenching her fists.

"Guys, no matter what his quirk is, we just have to predict when he's about to make direct contact and then counter it!" Midoriya told his classmates.

"Glad to see house arrest didn't kill your fighting spirit!" Kirishima remarked.

"Now let's see if you can win!" Mirio shouted and began to run towards the group.

Then suddenly, he went under the concrete.

"I got this!" Hailey declared and slammed her clenched hands onto the concrete, sending a large scaled echo wavelength as well as a jagged sonic wavelength.

"Izu!" Hailey shouted, feeling Mirio's presence behind Midoriya underground.

Even though Midoriya was ready to kick Mirio, Mirio phased through he attack and tricked Midoriya into thinking he was heading for his eyes, but caught him off guard with a punch to the stomach.

"I've discovered that most people try to launch a counterattack, just like you did. So, naturally I've trained to work around such moves. Nice try though!" Mirio explained and went back into the concrete.

Then one by one, he took down the others with incredible speed.

As the dust cleared, Mirio looked at all of the collapsed students.

"Sorry there, Erasure Head, I didn't mean to take them down so easily." He said sheepishly.

"I think you're forgetting one." Mr Aizawa pointed out to the third year.

Mirio gave him a confused look before noticing Hailey doing a hand spring and front flipping, only to release a purple paralysis wave upon contact with the concrete floor.

"Sorry everyone." She apologized to her classmates, but without removing the glowing purple stare she was giving Mirio.

"Ah! A paralysis wavelength! That's pretty cool." Mirio commented, unable to move his body. "Is this an ultimate move, villain kid?"

Hailey frowned again, "Are people seriously calling me that? I came here to learn how to be a hero." Then Hailey realized that her heartbeat wasn't strong enough to continue releasing the wavelength.

Hailey took in a breath, readying herself to get into the zone of avoiding attacks.

"So you wanna party? You're lucky that I used to be a party girl." Hailey challenged, her eyes now glowing a bright turquoise. "Teach me what it's like at the work study!"

"You seem to be the most energetic of the bunch!" Mirio remarked before jumping into battle.

Hailey was able to dodge Mirio's fast punches, using her sonic boosts on her legs to speed up the dodges.

Upon seeing an opening, Hailey released a Vocal Wave, surprising Mirio and making his stumble back a bit.

"Wow! You've got some fast reflexes and a real variety to your quirk!" Mirio exclaimed, louder than his usual already booming voice.

Hailey didn't allow herself to get distracted again and began rushing over to Mirio, but she jumped into the air and in mid roundhouse kick, sent a different type of wavelength at Mirio. He was able to phase through it and Hailey was quick to boost into a back handspring after making contact with the ground. When she got back onto her feet, she readied herself for anymore attacks, panting heavily, and her blood flowing out of her nose.

"You look like you're hitting your limit." Mirio noted, "Unfortunately for you, I'm not even close!" And with that, Mirio sped towards Hailey. His punches didn't tire, but Hailey's dodging was beginning too. But with a stroke of luck, Hailey was able to catch Mirio's solid fist in her hand.

But she wasn't fast enough to react to Mirio phasing his fist through her body and then lurching her into the air with a kick. Hailey's body bounced off of the floor and she laid on her side, unable to move any further.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I tried to make it so you wouldn't see my willy. Sorry if you got a peek." Mirio apologized to the first years, who were now conscious but still in pain. "But anyway, that's a taste of what it's like to fight me."

"We all just got punched in the stomach without ever knowing what was going on." Midoriya commented, wearily.

"Right, so whaddaya think? Isn't my quirk strong?" Mirio inquired.

"I think I'm ready to pass away." Hailey groaned, plopping herself on the ground and clutching her stomach.

"Yeah it's too strong!" Sero yelled.

"Mine doesn't even compare!" Hagakure yelped.

"What kinda quirk is that?! Do you have two like Hailey and Todoroki?!" Mina exasperated.

"Nope, just the one, like your classmate was saying." Mirio answered.

"Ooh! Ooh! Can I tell them what it is? Permeation! Cool, right?!" Nejire chirped happily.

"Hado, let Mirio explain his own power." Amajiki grumbled.

"Yup! I've got a sweet quirk that's called Permeation." Mirio described, "What you guys thought of as a warp was, you guessed it, simply an alternative application of that power."

Nejire pulled on Mirio's shirt with a pout to get his attention, to which Mirio apologized to her.

Of course, Midoriya didn't hesitate to question Mirio's alternative application of his quirk, using his fingers as if he were taking invisible notes.

Mirio explained that he needs to activate his quirk throughout his entire body in order to pass through any solid object, including the ground. When he stops using his quirk, physics repels him out of the object.

"Wow, you were born with a really strong quirk." Asui complimented.

"Not true." Mirio avowed, "My power's only strong because I made it that way. While my quirk is activated, my lungs can't take in any oxygen. Even if I breathe in, the air'll just pass through. In the same way my eardrums don't work, and light can't go through my retinas. I can pass through everything, but that means I can't feel anything when I'm in that state. Even though I have a body, I can't stop falling. I could probably keep going down forever. Does that make sense?"

Hailey raised her hand, feeling a bit of a relation to what Mirio was explaining, "How do you get over that fear? The fear of falling forever? Feeling as if you were in a death-like state?" She inquired.

Her question caught a lot of people off guard, putting a new perspective into the conversation.

Mirio offered her a smile, "I realized that if I wanted to get better, I couldn't focus on the worst case scenarios, even now. I learned that I can have control over my quirk with concentration. I figured out tricks from the experience I gained from my work study. That's why I wanted to fight you all, to show that experience is more important than just learning and listening."

Mirio then went on to explain that in the work study, students are no longer regarded as guests, but as sidekicks, or even pros.

"I turned my experience into power! So you with me first years!?" Mirio asked, in enthusiasm.

The awe from before was back, Hailey now saw why Mirio was at the top, he conducted himself as if he were a pro hero. There was no doubt in her mind that she was looking at someone who could very much be the next Number One Pro Hero.
