{MHA} Just Managing
Hailey woke up feeling...feeling nothing.
Almost like a numbness.
Everything she did was automatic and robotic.
It was better that way.
It wasn't until she got downstairs to see Midoriya and Bakugou cleaning that her emotions set in again.
"Shit, did I get up too early again?" She facepalmed.
"No, actually you're right on time." Midoriya answer, a nervous smile on his face.
"Right on time? Nobody else is here." Hailey pointed out in confusion.
"O-oh well-you see-" Midoriya began stammering, now Hailey knew he was hiding something.
"Aizawa said you were on house arrest for a day. You're on yard work." Bakugou informed Hailey, annoyed that Midoriya didn't get straight to the point.
Hailey sighed sadly, "I guess that's fair.." Then she shrugged, "Luckily, I'd rather do yard work than house work."
She then rushed upstairs to her dorm to see that a 'house arrest' sign was on her door.
"Jeez, didn't notice that.." Hailey noted, and began her day.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Coming back down with a pair of short overalls and a baseball cap.
"'Kay did Mr Aizawa leave any instructions or are you guys the messengers?" Hailey asked the boys, who were now dusting and sweeping.
"On the table." Bakugou answered, giving Midoriya an unimpressed look at sight of his nervousness returning.
"Thanks, Baku." Hailey nodded and shuffled over to the table to pick up the note.
Roselle,
For your house arrest, you've been assigned to do yard work
You'll tend to the trees, mow the grass, water plants, and wash the outside of the windows. You're allowed to do any other work you see as fit.
You'll find all of the equipment in a shed by the dorm buildings.
- Mr Aizawa
After reading the note, Hailey blew a raspberry with her lips.
"Neat." She muttered. "You'd think for house arrest, I'd be stuck in the house.."
She then shrugged and decided to not question things.
"See you guys in a bit." Hailey called to her two friends before heading out of the dorms.
"Good luck!" Midoriya called back before she left.
As Hailey stepped out of the building, she took in the breath of fresh air to enhance her mood to one of tranquility. Then she walked towards where a shed stood by the first year dorms. Sliding open the door, Hailey took a look at the gardening equipment.
'This is going to be a long day.'
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was afternoon before Hailey had finished her tasks, she was tired and covered in dirt and grass when she returned to the dorms.
"You look like shit." Bakugou remarked.
"Thanks, thought it was an upgrade." Hailey lightly chuckled, as she entered the living area.
Bakugou was quick to notice Hailey going towards the couch, "Hey! Don't bring all that dirt and shit in here or I'll hose you fucking down!"
Hailey laughed sheepishly, "Right, sorry, I'll go clean up. Only because I looove you." She teased before walking off towards her dorm to get some new clothes.
On her way there, Hailey saw Midoriya vacuuming the carpeted flooring of the girl's side of the dorms.
"Heya, Izu." She greeted with a smile.
"Hi Hailey- you look uh-" Midoriya gulped.
"'Like shit'? I know, Baku already let me know." Hailey giggled, "I just got really into my work, I guess."
"I know what you mean, at least tomorrow we both get to go back to school." Midoriya commented.
"Oh yeah, not gonna lie, I kinda missed seeing you in class." Hailey admitted.
Midoriya's felt his cheeks heat up at what Hailey was saying.
"Maybe now life will go back to normal." Hailey blurted quietly, but not enough that Midoriya didn't hear.
"What do you mean by that?" Midoriya inquired.
"O-oh, uh- nothing! Just ready for normal school life to get back on track!" Hailey nervously exclaimed.
Midoriya frowned, "Hailey.."
"I gotta go wash-up, but I'll come hang out with you when you're done with your chores, 'kay?" Hailey suggested, trying to leave the conversation.
"O-okay." Midoriya hesitated before agreeing with Hailey's request.
Hailey offered him a smile before temporarily parting ways with her friend.
As she walked, Hailey cringed at her behaviour.
'That was the cringest thing you've ever done, if you don't think it makes it on the list.'
'Fuuuuuck, why can't you act normal?! You gotta have a crush on one of your best friends, great job.'
Stepping into the female designated showering and bathing room, Hailey took a breath and decided to just relax.
'No point in adding more things to stress me out. I'll just end up making myself sick.'
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Hm, classes should be over soon." Midoriya noted as he glanced at the clock in the living room.
"Doesn't matter, we'll just finish up again and take their garbage when those losers get back." Bakugou retorted, as he sprayed the windows and wiped them clean.
"Can-can I ask you something, Kacchan?" Midoriya blurted.
Bakugou huffed, "Whatever."
Midoriya hesitated for a moment, but when Bakugou glared at him and yelled at him for getting his attention and then not asking his question, Midoriya went on.
"I-I just wanted to ask about Hailey..you two seem..close."
Bakugou gave him a confused look, "What the fuck are you on about?" Then Bakugou's expression turned into one of amusement as he realized what Midoriya hinting towards. "Oh, that's what you're worried about? God you are an idiot." He scoffed.
Midoriya averted his gaze to the side, "Yeah, you're right, it's pretty stupid.."
"Carrot Hair seems like the kind of person who gets close to people easy, because she cares a lot about others. That's probably why it looks like we're getting close. Didn't notice, but that's all it is, so don't get your tits in a twist." Bakugou explained, gruffly.
"I didn't notice how close we were getting until recently either.." Midoriya commented softly, looking down at his open palm, "I haven't felt like this before, so it caught me off guard. Or maybe..I'm more nervous with her because we aren't as close anymore.."
"Now you're just blabbing nonsense." Bakugou felt annoyed at Midoriya's speculations. "Both you need to stop being so dense and just talk to each other."
Midoriya understood what his childhood friend was telling his and nodded, "Maybe that would be best, thanks Kacchan."
Then the sound of Hailey lightly singing a song to herself was faintly heard, getting louder as she was getting closer to the living area.
"And I just saw Haley's comet, she says 'why you always running in place'? Even the man and the moon disappear, somewhere in the stratosphere." Hailey's soft singing stopped as she noticed her two classmates standing in the kitchen. "Hey, you guys good to take a break? Everybody doesn't come back for another twenty minutes." She suggested, plopping herself onto the couch.
"I'm sure a break won't hurt." Midoriya smiled and sat on the other end of the couch that Hailey was already sitting on.
"C'mon Baku, take-ith a break-ith." Hailey joked, "See? I've been away from English for too long, enlighten me how to speak again."
Bakugou grumbled, but gave in and sat on the recliner beside Hailey's side of the couch.
"So, whatcha wanna chat about? Guessing what everyone learned today? Quirk debate? Compare battle scars?" Hailey suggested.
"'Battle scars'?" Bakugou repeated, "We haven't been in anything worth battle scars."
"Are you just saying that because your body is a virgin in that department?" Hailey teased.
"HA?! What the fuck are you on? I'm the one who's giving the scars! Besides, I haven't seen any scars on you." Bakugou retorted aggressively.
Hailey chuckled, "I have them, some stupid, some battles." Hailey then titled her head back and pointed to the jagged white line at the centre of her neck. "Got this bad boy when I drove into a barbed wire fence while riding a dirt bike. Safe to say those two don't mix."
Then she rolled up her left sweatpant leg to her knee. Hailey then pointed to scar one her kneecap. "Took a chunk of my knee out when running after Yuri after he stole something of mine and crashed into the kitchen floor." Then she pointed to the side of her calf. "Ooh, this was skating collision. I was spinning, Yuri was jumping and Luka was working on footwork, we all kinda needed some spacial awareness."
Then Hailey pointed to a small horizontal line on her shin, "This was a clean cut fracture. Mom and the doctor didn't believe me when we went in to get it checked out. It was great when he came back after looking at the x-ray and said he was sorry." Hailey laughed at the memory.
"How did you manage to break it?" Midoriya chuckled.
"Might've been training or something. Flips are hard so I probably fucked up a landing." Hailey thought for a moment, before brushing it off. "I'm guessing those arm scars of yours are from overusing your quirk back at the training camp, right?"
Midoriya nodded and looked down at his arm, solemnly. "Yeah, back at the training camp."
"Well at least you didn't over use them for the sake of it. You protected someone from a powerful villain, just like a hero would." Hailey smiled, her attitude towards the situation now shifted. "Now c'mon, where are the funny story scars? You two grew up together, so spill."
Midoriya and Bakugou shared a look before pondering for a moment.
Hailey deadpanned, "Were you that sheltered?"
"Well Kacchan did fall from-" Midoriya began, but was cut off by Bakugou screaming at him to shut up.
Hailey laughed at their behaviour.
The three continued talking, often bantering over the topics until their classmates returned from their day of classes.
"Hey guys, how was your day?" Hailey asked them.
Mina flopped herself onto Hailey's lap and whined, "It was so loooong!"
Hailey chuckled and rubbed her back. "That bad, huh?"
"Yeah!" Uraraka exclaimed, sitting on the empty recliner. "You'll never guess how hero training went-"
"Hold it right there!" Iida quickly jumped in to cut off Uraraka. "Roselle is still under house arrest, so we can't give her the details of our day either!"
"Yeah, I bet she thought she was still under special treatment." Mineta remarked, catching everyone's attention.
"What are you talking about?" Hailey questioned.
Mineta looked as if he were a deer caught in the headlights when everyone intensely stared at him.
"W-well everyone can agree that you didn't deserve the one day of house arrest." He blurted.
"Well I think that she doesn't deserve any day of house arrest." Uraraka glared at him.
"Yeah, I'm more surprised that you haven't been punished for all your pervy antics." Mina defended.
"Guys." Hailey interrupted, "It's fine, I know what it looks like from outside eyes and it's whatever. I appreciate the defence, but really, I just wanna get this thing over with." She attempted to assure them.
Her classmates grew quiet, before complying with Hailey's request.
"Hailey." Todoroki called, catching her attention, "Can I speak with you for a moment?"
Hailey nodded, "Sure thing, Sho." She answered and followed him to the staircase.
"So what's up? You look kinda stressed, are you alright?" Hailey questioned with concern when she noticed her friend's expression. "Did something happen today?"
Todoroki let out a sigh and rubbed the inside of his eyes, "Sorry, I didn't realize how long of a day it's been."
"Sho, what's going on?" Hailey asked, putting a hand on his shoulder.
"I know it shouldn't let it bother me, but some of the students were gossiping and making crude comments about you. If it weren't for Iida and Sero restraining me and Kirishima, we might have joined you all in house arrest." Todoroki confessed, looking down at his feet in a glare.
Hailey gave him a half smile, "D'aw Sho, thanks for trying standing up for me. Those guys will forget about it soon enough. But I do appreciate you and Kiri."
Todoroki looked back at Hailey, his expression softened at his friend's reassurance. He knew that what was happening around her was bothering her to a stressful extent. He just hoped that he could help Hailey deal with the things to come.
"Oh, before I forget, my old man requested that we go over to my house tomorrow night. Would you like to come? I know your first visit wasn't the most pleasant.." Todoroki asked, with a bit of hesitation.
It caught Hailey a bit off caught, but she smiled, "Sure, I'll come over! I kinda wanted to see Fuyumi again anyways."
Todoroki had a small smile now, "I'm happy that you see past all of the family drama from last time."
"I get it, Sho. So don't stress about it." Hailey conceded, "Me of all people know what it's like to have a dysfunctional family. I'm relieved that you and the others still accept me, even with my old man being a villain."
"For the record, all of us who know you, know that you deserve to be here and training towards being a hero." Todoroki encouraged as he turned to rejoin the others.
Feeling a sense of relief, Hailey followed her classmate and returned to her classmates.
