Chapter 3
"Congratulations on your new job Robinson. Your place is upstairs, he can show you where it is," the captain said gesturing to Ted, "you might meet John up there. He's the old science guy. He'll be retiring in a week or two, so he'll be able to teach you a few things about what to do."
"Thank you so much captain!" I said. Ted led me up to the police lab, and sure enough John was there. He was wearing a bow tie and a lab coat. He glanced up from his work when we walked in. "Hello!"
"Hello. You must be the new kid. The name's John. John Smith."
"Uh, I'm Michelle. Michelle Robinson."
"I gotta get back to work now," Ted interrupted, "see you later?"
I turned to him. "Yeah, see you." Ted walked off. I waited until he was out of sight to turn back to John.
"I hope you don't get distracted-"
"By him? No no no. We are just friends."
"Okay then. Let me introduce you to this place. Chemicals are over there. Computers are there. For now this will be your place, but just until I retire." He pointed to three places. "Oh and bathroom is down the hall, second door on the right. There's a drinking fountain by it."
"What's in there?" I asked pointing to some cabinets.
"Equipment." He went back to what he was doing. "Take the rest of the day off. I heard you just woke up from a coma. Take a walk around and get used the the city again."
"Ok, Thanks!" I headed back downstairs and said bye to Ted before heading out to walk back home. Ted assured her that everything was just as she left it.
She breathed in fresh air. It felt nice. She saw a biker crossing the road. Michelle smiled at them. Then she saw a car coming down the road. Alarmingly she saw that they were too close to each other. Suddenly everything slowed down, and she stopped walking. Everything was in slow motion! Michelle saw as the car drove just an inch away from the biker. She breathed a sigh of relief and everything went back to normal. Now she was really confused. She looked around to see if anyone else saw anything. Nobody seemed to have seen anything weird. She quickly walked home.
Michelle started to make some hot chocolate, thinking that would calm her down. She went to grab a mug. Since the cupboard was up high, she went on her toes. Michelle grabbed a mug and pulled it down, but it had been supporting other mugs and the mugs started falling. But suddenly, again, everything went slo-mo. Michelle reached out a hand to catch the mugs and saw that she was still moving normally. She gasped. Quickly placing the mugs on the counter, she grabbed the edge of the counter and took a few deep breaths. It was just her imagination, she told herself, just her mind adjusting back to the world. She put a the mugs away calmly, ignoring the slight nagging at the back of her mind that her solution didn't make sense.
Michelle settled on her couch with hot chocolate in hand. She stared into space thinking about what she should do. Her mind wandered, trying to remember what happened to lead up to the explosion a year ago. Suddenly, she realized she should probably contact her family. She organized a group text to her parents and siblings. 'I'm awake' she sent, 'Any new developments I should know about?'
Michelle eye's started drooping, and she realized how tired she was. She went to her room and changed into her pajamas. She turned off the light and hopped into bed, letting her eyes close. She felt herself relax and sink right into a deep sleep.
