:.Himegoto - Things Hidden.:
Short but important chapter. I hope you've been paying close attention; everything's going to come back around.
"He was amazing, sensei," Lana said to Katana, who was sat in front of her. Chris was at her left, Janelle to her right, and Adam leaning against the wall. "I've never seen Josh-kun let go of his cognitives so fast."
"He was drunk," Katana said flatly, her tone showing that she was much less than enthused. The knowledge that the graduates had wandered into the most dangerous parts of the city with older members like Lana, Chris, Josh, and Max upset her greatly, but she still listened as they discussed Josh and Tyler's improvement.
"That doesn't matter. He's strong now. He deserves to be recognized," Chris said.
"Recognized for what? For not taking care of himself?"
Janelle narrowed her eyes at Katana. Her jaw dropped as she prepared to speak, broadcasting the contrast of her cherry red lips against her chocolate brown skin. "I know how much he's grown. So do you. I had to clean up the mess he left sixteen years ago with Amy. I did that. And for you to pretend he hasn't made any progress since then? That's blasphemy! And it's wrong. So pull yourself out of whatever this is. The entire point of having him teach Melanie was to get him to be in a position where he could advance. And he did an amazing job, you can't deny that. What is your problem?"
Katara's nose flared as she thought of her response. Instead of replying to the situation at hand, she steered the conversation in a different direction. "There is a man named Tyler Joseph in Ohio."
This caught England-native Adam's attention. "Where is that?"
"The United States. The man is in jail. He killed most of his family."
Chris squinted. "And what does that have to do with us?"
"Joshua-kun is from Ohio. If this man, this Tyler, knows what he is capable of, he doesn't show any sign of it."
"How do we know for sure that they have the same abilities?" Lana asked.
"I don't know for sure. But one of the doctors involved has had experience with supernaturals," Katana said slowly as if she was trying not reveal too much information.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Lana asked, flicking a few long strands of hair out of her face.
"I need to go check up on him," Katana said instead of answering the question, leaving the room promptly. Adam pushed himself from the wall, following after her. His footsteps were ghastly quiet, and it was only after he had intentionally squeaked his shoe against the floor that she turned to face him.
As soon as her eyes met his, she was locked stiff under his influence. Adam tilted his head slightly, his eyes widening grotesquely. Katana knew what was happening, but for the life of her, she couldn't will herself to turn away. She was just so enamored by his eyes. The optic capsules pushed themselves out of the man's head. It seemed so effortless. Katana's gaze was locked on the man's now completely exposed eyes. They rested just outside of the sockets, held up by his lower lashes. Katana's mouth gaped open as she stared, feeling completely empty. Finally, he blinked, immediately sliding his eyes back into place and freeing Katana.
"How could you do that?" She asked, immediately upset. "We don't use our powers on each other, ever."
"I needed to know what you were hiding," Adam answered evenly.
"So you just read my mind instead of continuing to ask?"
"I knew you'd never tell." Adam sat cross-legged on the floor. "So, when are you gonna tell the others? More importantly, when are you gonna tell Joshua-kun? This is going to affect him the most."
"He's not ready to deal with it," Katana answered, confident in her knowledge of her student.
"When are you going to stop looking at him like he's a child? He can handle it. And honestly, if he can't, he'll have to learn how. He needs to learn to take responsibility for his actions."
Katana's nose flared in anger. "He was a kid. He didn't know what he was doing. It wasn't his fault," she said in an angered yet hushed tone.
"What does that change? Maybe it wasn't his fault, but that doesn't matter. What matters is the fact that it happened, and it's all coming back. If you don't tell him, he won't have a chance to fix it. And that would be your fault." With that, Adam stood, turning his back on Katana to return with the rest of his friends. For a moment, the woman feared that he would tell her secret. But the thought quickly dissipated from her mind. Adam was one of the most loyal people she knew, and the notion that he would reveal this very important truth, no matter how vital it was, proved unthinkable. No, Adam was the type of man that would let her think it through herself. Whether she succeeded or failed, he would let her do it on her own.
