It's been weeks since Cara and I had that awkward little talk in the bathroom. It's also been a while since Chris and I have spoken to each other outside of first hour and even more than a student/teacher barrier. I've grown to just call him Mr.Brown. My dreams have gotten intense and sometimes I wish that we could just speak to each other again to make them stop. They got so bad that we've done things in my dream that I have never done or even seen in the sex scenes of a Rated R movie. I don't know where I got those thoughts from but they got me daydreaming in class.
My wounds have healed from the incident last month but the scars are still there. All of them. My mother changed so much that it scares me. I still hear her crying in her room at night. Sometimes, I would rock her to sleep and she would think it was my father doing it. That's the only reason she would sleep. I even have to remind her to eat when I come home from school at times. I don't think she would be weak enough to take her own life like I would but sometimes, I wonder about her. I make sure she doesn't get the opportunity to give up like I did. I know she misses my father but he wouldn't like to see her like this.
You would think that things would die down between Mr.Brown and I but I think that he still is mad at me. Call me crazy, but he has some sort of animosity towards me. I just sit in class and hope that we don't have to talk that day. I keep an A so that I don't have to conversate with him. Our teacher still haven't came and our principal finally made him our teacher. He's gotten stricter, probably because he's getting paid now but I don't see why he gotta hold a grudge against me.
School has been surprisingly drama free. I don't get bothered anymore and I still don't have friends but since I avoid the cafeteria at lunch, everyone doesn't pay me any mind anymore. I don't mind it at all.
I got dressed up in my new out fit (Multimedia the one on the left with the heels) that I bought last week at the mall. Its just typical Saturday but Im not going out with anyone but myself. My mom will be working at the bakery most of the day, so I need something to do. I think Im going to go shopping and then watch a movie.
I hop in my car and cruise to the mall listening to Kendrick Lamar's M.A.A.D. City album. This reminds me of my dad because he used to hate this album just because of the lyrics. I would never be able to play this around him but I can hear in my head talking about it. The things that remind me of my father don't make me sad anymore, it actually makes me happy. I smile to the thought of his voice, his achievements and presence. There's is not a man in this world that could take my father's place and I will stick by my word when I say that. He wasn't perfect but that's what made him wonderful.
I pull up to the mall and park. It wasn't until I turned off the car and checked myself in the mirror to realize I was crying the whole time. I closed my eyes and tilted my head towards the sky with a smiled on my face. I know my father is here with me and I will pray for him at church tomorrow.
I walked into the mall was about to begin my shopping when I spotted Mr.Brown and a group of guys that Im guessing was his friends walk out of Friday's. He seen me as Well and what made it even more awkward is that we ended up walking into Footlocker together. While I looked around, I avoided going into their direction. Lucky me, they split up and started looking In different sections. I on the other hand, I couldn't help but glance at Mr.Brown every once in a while just to stop my urge to go speak to him.
"Wassup, ma. Ya need some help?" A guy who works there asked me. He had a very strong accent, so I know hes not from here just like me.
"Umm, No Thank you." I said.
"Iight, lemme kno if ya change ya mind." He said with a priceless smile. I nodded and smiled back.
"Aye, August!" Chris yelled to the guy that works here with that accent. I see that Chris comes here a lot.
"Wassup, Breezy?" The guy said they dapped each other up and got to talking again. I see that they know each other personally. I know his name is August now. I think Im too nosey at times.
"I wonda why ya in chea lookin fa Jordan's but cha wearing heels." August said standing next to me.
"Im a girl with many styles. You never know what you're gonna get." I said with a smirk and a grin.
"I feel ya" he laughed. "How bout I see a new style of yours at a movie sometime?" He said licking his lips and biting the bottom one.
"I don't know, I'll think about it." I said trying to play hard to get.
"Well, how bout cha don an we can go catch one na?" He said with his deep accent. This is probably my only chance to go out on a date with a boy without my mom knowing.
"But youre at work." I stated.
"I get off in about.." he looked at his watch. "One more minute" he smile.
"Well that gives me more than a enough time to ask your name." I said even though I know his name.
"August." He said softly. "August Alsina, how bout yours?" He said shaking my hand.
"Nice to meet you August Alsina, Im Kamryn Reed." His smile faded and he looked at Chris and then back at me. He looked defeated rather than disgusted.
"Oh, you da girl Chris was talkin bout?" He said. "We can be friends still doe, right?"
"Yes, of course." I said. "But, what did he say about me?" I asked concerned about what's been said about me and why would my teacher be telling strangers about me.
August smiled and licked his lips. "Oh, I can't tell ya allat. But jus kno, he tole me bout cha." He said with a smirk. I looked at him confused but I'll just shot a look at Chris who I knew was staring and wanted to get the secret information about me. I just shrugged it off and rolled my eyes.
"So, ya still down fa a movie.?" He asked. I nodded and we headed out the Celebration Cinema together. Chris mugged us as we walked out but I kinda like the attention. Although, We're just friends.
We decided to take the long way to the movies so that we can get to know each other a little better.
"So, how old are you?" I asked.
"I'm 22," He said "How bout you?' He asked.
"19," I admitted. He scrunched up his face in confusion.
"Then how are you still in high-school?" He asked with much curiousty.
"How'd you know I was in high-school?" I asked really wanting to knowing why he knows this.
He laughed a little and cleared his throat. "Well, Breezy and I been bestfriends since NOLA days. He from Virginia but moved out there with his mom. To make a long story short, we moved to Cali to make something better out of ourselves." He said.
"But, what does that have to do with me?" I asked.
"Well, with that being said, he tells me everything." He said putting the emphasis on the last word. He smirked when he seen that I was still lost. "I know about you and him. He used to hide you from me but just recently, he called his momma your name on accident over the phone and just ended up venting to me." He said.
"That's awkward" I said a little embarrassed. "What all did he say?" I asked.
"If your asking did he tell me about that "kiss" that never happened, then Yes, he told me everything." He said. My face began to glow red and he chuckled. "Don't worry, I won't tell. Your secret is safe with me, ma."
"Hopefully," I said looking at the ground.
"It is, I won't do you like that," he said. "I heard you dont have any friends." He blurted. My attention went to the people in the hallway. "Im sorry, I didn't mean to say it like that."
"No, I don't have any friends but why would he tell you my business like that If he doesn't even want to be my friend?" I said upset.
"Who said I didn't want to?" I turned to see Chris standing in the doorway of Hollister.
"You said that, Don't try to make it seem like, I did it." I semi yelled.
"You did! You said, you didn't need nobody. So what the hell do you need me for?" He said obviously upset.
"I don't, so the conversation is over." I said dismissing the subject.
"That's exactly my fucking point." He said.
"Damn, yah sure that yah was just friends?" August interrupted.
"I guess not." I said walking away.
"Well, yah acting like a married couple. Sit down and talk like friends do." August said grabbed hold of my arm.
"No, let me go." I snatched away from his grip.
"Bruh, she stubborn as hell." August said to Chris.
"You don't even know me, so keep you comments to yourself." I scolded him.
"My bad, ma." He threw his hands up in surrender. I felt bad for yelling at him and took a deep breath.
"Look, I didn't mean to ruin your mood," I said in a low voice. "I'll just go, nice meeting you, August." I said as I attempted to walk away. But Chris grabbed my arm this time.
"Kami, wait." He said. "Im sorry." He said sincerely. I gazed in his eyes for the first time in what felt like forever and instantly a mixture of sad and happiness filled my heart. I missed him.
"I am too, Chris." I said sighing in relief. He embraced me in a heart warming hug and I melted in his arms. I missed that too.
"You good, now?" He asked as he pulled away.
"Yeah, Im okay," I said.
"Good, now can we finish this date?" August asked. I chuckled.
"Yeah, gone head. I'll see you at school Monday, Kami." Chris said.
"Why you leaving so early?" I asked.
"Because, I don't want to interfere with your date and Im finna go home and chill." He said.
"It's Alright, I was gone have her go to your house afterwards anyway." August said laughing and Chris joined him, also giving him dap.
"You guys are something else," I playfully hit August.
"We know," Chris said walking away with the group of friends he came with.
"Were you really going tell me to go to his house After this?" I asked.
"Yes, you grown. I was gone give you his address and you can decide to go or not. Unless you want me to take you." He said.
"Im fine, Thank you. But I don't know If I should." I debated.
"Well, it's not like he's gonna try to fuck you. I mean, you're his student for one and for two, he don't like fucking on the first time yah chill. Unless, you're a thot. Then he'll make an exception because ya be coming back." He chuckled.
"Then, I don't have anything to worry about, right?" I asked.
"Right, unless you're a thot." He added.
"Im not." I shot him a look.
"Im just fucking wit cha" he laughed as we stood in line at the movie.
"Why do you curse so much?" I asked.
"Because, Im a nigga and that's what niggas do." He said.
"My father was a black male and he didn't curse that much." I said crossing my arms.
"I ain't cha daddy." He said.
"Hello, what movie would you like to see?" The lady asked as we were next in line.
"2 tickets to Selma." August requested.
"One payment or two?" She asked.
"Two" I said.
"One," He said at the same time as I.
"I can pay for myself, August." I said.
"You're a female, you don't pay for yourself when you're with a guy" He said pulling out his wallet.
My father always told me that but I don't see why a female can't just do it herself. I understand the man is a gentleman but just him offering to pay is enough for me. I dont mind at all. August paid for our tickets and we walked to see the movie.
"Thank you, August" I said.
"For what?" He asked.
"For noticing me." I said holding back tears.
"How can anyone NOT notice you?" He said holding the door open for me.
"They've been doing it all my life. Chris was the first but he's my teacher and we met on an unfortunate circumstance." I admitted.
"Youre the only child, ain't you?" He asked.
"Yeah, why?" I responded.
"Cause I can see why you act the way you and how you speak. It's definitely in your eyes." He said.
"Wow, you can read people good." I said astonished.
"Yeah," he chuckled. "I had to do it all my life. I just gotten better over the years." He said.
"That's a gift." I smiled. "God works in wonderful ways."
"He really does," He whispered as the movie began to start.
------
After the movie, August walked me to his car and gave me his number. I sat in my car sang in joy to my favorite songs. I was happy that I just watched a movie with a boy and got his number. I thought I was invisible. I kissed my lucky ring that I had on my finger and said a little prayer to myself.
Before pulling off, I got a phone call from a random number. I was hesitant to answer but my gut told me to give it a try.
"Hello?" I asked.
"Kami?" I instantly knew it was Chris.
"Hey, Chris. How'd you get my number?" I asked.
"August gave it to me, of course." He chuckled.
"Yeah, I Kinda figured." I said smiling.
"So, you wanna come over and chill tonight?" He asked.
"Yeah, sure. Just text me the address and I'll be there." I said.
"Alright." He said before hanging up.
