Chapter Eighteen

The Discovery

"OKAY what's up with you?", Madisyn asked Ian after a while. She was still confused by his statement.

He on the other hand was thinking of asking Madisyn if he had kissed her when he blurted out his statement. He wanted to say something when he noticed Ana approach with their food.

"So how are you guys with the case? Any suspects yet?", Ana asked.

"Ana we can't tell you how far we are.", Madisyn started.

"Oh okay. I understand.", she said.

"But I can tell you it's going well and soon we'll find this person and put them behind bars.", Madisyn said.

"That's good. That's great. Sarah was a very nice person, always helping Robin and me. She and Miles were my true friends here. Miles is also Sarah's friend. And Robin was also Sarah's friend. He seemed sad when he heard it.", she rambled. "Oh I'm talking so much I'll leave you to your food.", she said and left.

"She likes the sheriff.", Ian said eating and Madisyn looked at him surprised that he was back to his normal self.

But she didn't question it and just continued.

"Yep she does.", she said and they ate in a manageable silence.

Lisa was in her car waiting for Pablo in front of his office.

After she discovered Irene might be Sarah's aunt, she couldn't wait to tell Pablo. He was the only one who knew about the diary. Miles and Raven weren't aware.

Plus, Miles had still not talked to her since the news of his relationship with Irene was published. So she called Pablo and told him. They agreed to meet once they were done with work.

She saw him coming out and she immediately had this feeling at the bottom of her stomach.

Why was she feeling that?

She honked lightly and he turned towards her car. He came and entered her car with a smile.

"Uh how was your day?", he asked a bit awkwardly.

"It was fine.", she said hoping her tone showed no awkwardness like his.

"So what did you find out?", he asked as she started the car and drove out of the building's parking lot.

"I was... distracted at work and I decided to take a look at the diary. Turns out Sarah is from here.", she said and Pablo gave her a look of bewilderment.

"Exactly my expression. She said her father was from an orphanage and her mum had fled her hometown and left her aunt and her grandparents."

"Sarah's aunt and grandparents.", Pablo said.

"Yeah. So the reason she came here was that her aunt was her only family member after her parents died I think."

"So did she say who her aunt was?", Pablo asked.

"No, but she said she hated her aunt.", she said.

"Why?"

"She came here to stay with her aunt but turns out her aunt hated her mother and so also hated Sarah. So Sarah said... or rather wrote that she also hated her aunt and that she was the person she hated so much.", Lisa finished.

"The person she hated so much.", he said to himself.

"And then I thought about what Mr Darren said about Sarah hating Irene.", she said and Pablo gave her a look of realisation this time.

"Again exactly my expression.",

"So you're saying Irene is Sarah's aunt.", Pablo said.

"I don't know but I mean she has to be you know. She was the only person Sarah ever hated and she didn't mention anything about it."

"Plus, Irene also hated her, according to Mr Darren.", he said.

Both of them remained quiet for a while before Lisa remembered the diner was up ahead. She didn't want to eat there though, because of what happened the last time.

"Uhm would you mind eating at my house?", she asked and before he could answer she explained herself. "It's just, I don't want us discussing at the diner and someone hearing us and then something like what happened with Miles happens again or....",

"It's fine Lisa. I'll eat at your place. Plus, I like your food.", he said and a small blush crept up her cheeks.

She had cooked for Hugh only a small amount of time. Though he was her boyfriend, he hardly spent time at her house.

"Thanks.", she said. Pablo sensed a little bit of awkwardness and changed the subject.

"So uh... maybe we can visit Irene tomorrow.", Pablo said.

"Why?", she asked.

"So we can ask her if she's truly Sarah's aunt. I mean Sarah didn't write it in her diary so we are just guessing. Plus, we can also find out why she hated Sarah.", Pablo said and Lisa's eyes widened a bit.

"Pablo. What if she's the one who killed her?", she asked and Pablo seemed stunned for a moment. Then he seemed thoughtful before he spoke.

"If she's the one. She wouldn't tell us why she hated Sarah.", he said and she looked at him confused as they neared her house.

"How would that show that she's the one?", she asked.

"Well if she is, she wouldn't tell us why she hated Sarah 'cause she knows we would be able to figure out a reason for her to have killed Sarah. So she won't. She might even deny knowing Sarah.", he said and she understood as she drove the car to a halt in her driveway

"Now let's go eat. I'm getting really hungry.", he said.

"Is there any time you're not hungry.", she groaned as they stepped out of the car.

"You invited me didn't you.", he said and then walked towards her house.

Sandra woke up angry. She remembered Gwendolyn had sent her to an interview on the progress of the murder case.

Why did it have to be on a Saturday? When she had to rest.

She was contemplating sleeping in when her phone rang. She checked and it was Gwendolyn.

"Urgh!", she said before answering.

"Sandra have you gone over to the station?",

"Good morning to you too.", she said sourly as she got up from the bed and looked at herself in the mirror.

She had a lot of work to do for herself.

"It's ten thirty in the morning. When will you get there and start? And you have to get prepared before leaving.",

She got that right, she thought.

"We need this interview by today. So that tomorrow we..."

"Yeah yeah. Edit it and we publish it on Monday. I know. Now hang up let me get ready, you're starting to sound like an old granny.", she complained.

"Whatever. Just do it and bring it tomorrow.", she said and hung up

"Just do it and bring it.", she said, mimicking Gwendolyn after she ended the cal.

She grumbled but got herself ready. She didn't have a car so she called Erik to bring the car that they used for the register. It was a minivan and Erik knew how to drive. It was one of the requirements for his job.

Not long after she got ready, he arrived.

"Morning Sandra.", he said brightly.

"Yeah yeah just head over to the station.", she said rudely but he didn't mind.

Gwendolyn and Sandra were most times rude to him so he got used to it, he now saw it as their way of life.

"What's got you in a twist this morning?", he asked.

"It's pants, pants in a twist.", she corrected.

"I'm trying not to be so vulgar.", he said with a smile and she gave him a 'are you crazy look'.

"Vulgar! Everyone says it there's nothing vulgar about it.", she said.

"I know. I'm just trying to lighten up your mood.", he said.

"Yeah well you didn't.", she said and there was silence before he continued.

"So since you're already in a bad mood. What did Gwendolyn say you should do in the station on a Saturday morning?", he asked.

"I have to do this interview on the murder case. How far they've gone and all that. If they have any possible suspects and all that. Then we'll edit it tomorrow and publish it on Monday.", she said.

"By editing, I'm sure you mean twisting it and making it sound like he's doing nothing.", he said accusingly.

"That is not what I do. I get the truth and put it in a better light.", she defended.

"Better light huh? All your articles seem in a better light.", he said sarcastically and the station was just up ahead.

"And what does that mean?", she asked.

"That article you wrote about Lisa wasn't in any better light. You just made it seem like she had something to do with the murder.", he said and she seemed to be getting more frustrated.

"That's what it seemed to me.", she said.

"Yeah, like someone who is grieving and yells at you seems like she's connected to the murder just because she's grieving and doesn't want to talk about it at the moment.", he said.

"Oh please just shut up.", she said getting her bag as the car stopped and leaving in a fouler mood.

She was trying to get herself calm and enter into her questioning mood when a man called to her. She told herself to calm down before looking at him with a sweet smile.

Always look sweet and unassuming.

"Yes, morning.", she said nicely.

"Morning and what's your business here?", he asked.

"I'm here to see the sheriff for an interview.", she said.

"Oh from the register. Well, he's kinda busy so you can't meet him now. You should've called earlier. You'll have to wait.", he said dryly.

She felt like hitting this man for talking to her the way he did, but she willed herself to calm down.

"Sir, I'm sure it won't take time. It's just some questions that's all. Plus, I have somewhere else to go I really can't wait.", she said.

"Well if that place is really important to you then you should go ahead and stop bothering us with your presence.", he snapped and continued.

"The world is bothered by your presence.", she muttered.

"You say something?", he asked menacingly but she didn't care.

"I'll wait.", she said with an overly fake smile.

The man nodded and continued typing something. She felt very irritated. She sat and started tapping her fingers on the book on her lap.

Time flew and soon it was twelve. She was so tired now. She hadn't eaten before she left. If she knew this was what she was coming to she would have taken more time. Probably even done her beauty mask.

She was thinking of leaving when the man that was at the desk stood up and left. She was alone in the lobby and she saw this as her window of opportunity. If she could just sneak her way to his office.

And so she did. She got up and discreetly left. The offices had blinds so they would only see a figure passing by. She moved until she reached the office that had the Sheriff in it.

She thought of knocking but she decided not to. She had been polite enough. She opened the door and the sight her eyes beheld was the first thing to make her smile today, a coy smile.

The sheriff was seating in his chair, with a shocked Ana who had just jumped off his lap.

Ooh! What a sight to behold indeed. This would be one juicy discovery for Sandra and knowing who she is, I've seen the reason why this sort of thing would make her smile.
