Chapter Eight

The Flight

CARTER was in his office making a call when his door opened and he gave a small smile seeing who it was. Maria, his wife, sauntered in and sat down.

"I'll call you later and we'll discuss further on this.", he hung up and looked at his wife. "Maria, what are you doing here? You know you have no business here.", he said with a stern look.

"Not even a welcome kiss for your wife.", she whined. But when Carter didn't move she sighed.

"I came here to discuss our son, Josh.", she said.

"Can't we do that at home and isn't he an adult now, what's there to talk about.", Carter said sounding irritated but Maria was oblivious to this.

"You always come home late so when will we get to talk? You'll say you're tired. Plus, even if Josh is an adult, he's still our son and we have to help him anyway when we notice something's wrong.", she said.

"Okay go ahead, what's there to talk about?", he asked.

"He's depressed, very. Since the burial of Sarah...", at the mention of Sarah, Carter scrunched his face causing Maria to stop.

"What, why that face?", she asked.

"Look, Maria, I don't like that girl, I never did. It's unfortunate but I'm glad she's gone and so what if Josh is sad, it's for the best anyways. He'll get over it!", he yelled. He couldn't believe he hung up on an important call just to entertain this garbage.

Maria didn't say anything at first then she widened her eyes as if she had just made a huge discovery.

"You did it, didn't you.", she accused and Carter looked at her.

"Did what? C'mon, you don't think I killed her, do you?", he asked.

"You did, you killed Sarah because you didn't like the fact that she was with Josh.", she gasped and looked away.

"Oh be quiet Maria and listen to what you're saying! You're calling me a murderer. Why? Because I didn't want her dating my son.", he sighed. "I don't know if your ears are blocked or you aren't listening. I said it's unfortunate... you hear, unfortunate. So I didn't do it and don't go saying nonsense.", he said.

She was quiet for a while, then seemed to cast the idea out of her mind.

"Fine. Okay. You're not doing anything for Josh, then I'll help him myself.", she stood and made to leave but turned around to face him.

"That reminds me, I'm hearing Gwendolyn has been visiting you. Is something wrong?", she asked.

For the first time, Carter tensed up but he recovered himself.

"No... nothing. We just discuss work.", he said and her hand left the doorknob to fully focus on him.

"Work? She's a journalist, you're a mayor. Your line of work isn't related, why would she come and....",

"You know, for her articles, things relating to the register or whatever.", he said.

"Can't she see your secretary for that?"

"Well I'm always on seat, so why not we just discuss it.", he said and busied himself with some papers not facing her.

She narrowed her eyes, she wasn't falling for this but she thought to let it be for now.

"Okay. Okay. I'll go now. Have a nice day.", she said.

"Yeah bye.", he said.

Then she came over to peck him before she left. On her way out she met his secretary.

"The next time Gwendolyn comes to visit him let me know and make sure you get to know what they talk about.", she whispered.

"Yes ma'am.", the secretary nodded and Maria left.

》》》》》

Lisa was at the usual diner with Hugh, Pablo and Raven. Miles was meeting with his uncle for some reason.

They were all just hanging out since they were surprisingly free. She was a bit angry at Hugh for getting drunk early. Even though his mind was clear now, he still refused to tell Lisa why he had gotten drunk.

She pestered him, but he didn't tell. She also asked Pablo who told her not to worry about it.

"I'm gonna call Robin and see what he knows.", Lisa announced.

"You're always calling him Lis, but he's found nothing.", Hugh said irritated.

"Who knows, something might come up. We could also help him. We knew Sarah better than he did and that might be helpful.", she shrugged and as she was about to dial his number, her phone rang. Robin was calling.

"Oh Robin! I was just about to call you. How are you?", she asked.

"I'm fine and you?", he asked.

"I'm good thanks.", she said.

"I decided to call and let you know that we have found something that might lead us directly to the killer.",

"Seriously, what?", she asked sounding excited and the three of them focused on her.

"So we found three things that will help us. All that we need is a DNA and boom, we've found the psycho.", Robin said.

"And what are they?", Lisa asked.

"A necklace, an empty alcohol bottle and a watch, which was broken.", he said.

"But how can you get anything from that?", Lisa asked her excitement dropping a bit.

"We've thought of a scenario. The person came and drank, took off his watch too. He must have been angry and followed her to the bedroom. And that's where everything went down.", he said.

"So..."

"So...", Robin paused for a while and she could hear him talking to someone, but couldn't hear exactly what he said as the phone was farther from his mouth. When he returned back to the call, he said, "Lisa, the report just came in. I'll call you later.", he said and she hung up.

"What'd he say?", Raven asked.

"He said they found a some items which included a broken watch and the owner of it, is probably the killer. He might be close. I hope he finds the person. I want to see who had the guts to do this. And when I see that person, I'm gonna...", Lisa didn't finish 'cause she was suddenly so angry.

"Well, I'm going home. I have some work to settle at home.", Raven said and Lisa nodded before she also stood up.

"Yeah sure. I also have to be going. See you guys tomorrow or luckily tonight when we see the murderer. Robin said the report just came in so...", she said excitedly.

She pecked Hugh before leaving. Pablo and Hugh looked at each other. They both knew the owner of the watch and that person according to Robin was the murderer.

Except, they also knew that the person wasn't the murderer.

》》》》》

Robin was staring at the report. It had the DNA of the people who owned the necklace and the watch and it also showed that the owner of the watch was the person who drank the alcohol.

It was the person he least expected.

Hugh Kent had murdered his friend Sarah and claimed she was like a sister to him. He also lied about where he was on the night of the murder.

This just proved his thoughts about Hugh. He had never liked him for Lisa.

As for the other person who was a lady, he didn't think of any reason she would have to murder Sarah. But then, she could be related to the murder and would have been an accomplice.

"Sir, someone is here to see you.", his assistant said.

"Who?", Robin asked.

"It's Sidney Callister, and she wants to talk about the murder.", the man paused. "She knows something.", he said and Robin sat up.

"Of course, let her in. We'll take her statement.", Robin said and his assistant left.

After some time, the person he needed walked in, the owner of the necklace, Sidney Callister.

Maybe she was here to confess.

"Hello, Miss Callister."

"Hello to you too sheriff.", she said smiling and sat down.

"And to what do I owe this visit?", Robin asked playing like he didn't have anything on her.

"I have come to report what I had heard.", she said and Robin looked surprised.

So she was gonna expose Hugh and then not say anything about herself.

"Okay, go ahead."

"I was at the pub today when I heard a conversation. Hugh, you know the one that gave a speech on the burial.", she said and he nodded.

"He was telling Pablo that he was feeling guilty and that his conscience was killing him. He also said he didn't mean to do what he did to Sarah and that he was the one that... killed her. He was at her house that day.", she said.

"Are you willing to testify this at court?", Robin asked and Sidney shifted in her seat.

"I don't know. I don't like the idea of court and all that's with it.", she said and Robin titled his head.

"Why? Is it because you're worried you'll have to explain why your necklace was found at Sarah's house on the night of the murder.", he said and the look of shock on her face made it evident that this was true.

So Robin leaned back and studied her. Arresting Hugh could wait for some time. For now, he had to get something on her.

"So. Miss Callister would you mind telling me where you were on May the 13th from the time seven pm till eight-thirty?", Robin asked and Sidney was quiet.

She hadn't thought this through because she had forgotten about her necklace that was at Sarah's house.

"I was in my school.", she said slowly.

"Your school. So late. Why?", he asked.

"I had to work on some files. Yes, I had visited Sarah that day.", she said. At least she wasn't lying about the last part.

"In the morning of course.", she quickly added before Robin spoke and Robin raised a brow.

"And do you have any witness to testify that you were at your school?", he asked.

"No. I was alone.", she said. Robin looked at her in scrutiny.

"Miss Callister, I'm having doubts about your story and I will and I mean, I will find your fault.", he said menacingly.

"Wow. I come to report what I heard as a good citizen and you're telling me you'll find my fault. I also want this murderer to be apprehended and so I tell the police the information I hear, in high hopes that t would be of help to you and what do I get, my spot on the suspect list! Impossible! I'm out of here and you are welcome Sheriff.", she spat and left.

Robin was more convinced that Hugh and Sidney were the perpetrators but he only managed to get an arrest warrant for Hugh to bring him in for questioning.

He had lied about where he was and that made it very obvious that he was the one.

The police arrived and knocked on his door. He knocked but there was no reply. Minutes later, they decided to break down the door. They searched his house. His closet looked scarce with few clothes.

It was either he was at a friend's or he ran away. And after checking the house of all his friends and contacts, it was very clear that Hugh Kent had left Liddenville.

Hugh has run away. Was it the right thing for him to do? Should he have lied from the beginning or just told the truth? Would Robin have believed him? So many questions. I would like to know your possible answers.
