Chapter Five

Your eyes open groggily with the bright sun shining in through the large, glass doors to the balcony. You can feel the warmth radiating off of Peter's body from behind you. Your legs are tangled up in his and his big, strong arms are wrapped around you, pulling you close to him. You wish you could stay like this forever, but there is something you know you have to do.

You flip over slowly so you're now facing Peter. His eyes are closed, deep in a calming sleep, and the corners of his mouth are upturned in a small smile. He's never been happier and he's never looked this peaceful before. You trace your fingers around his jawline until you reach his soft, brown hair. You push your fingers through it and play with it, waking him up in bliss. His tired, green eyes meet yours and his grin widens upon seeing your gorgeous face lying next to him in the morning after the greatest night of his life.

He moans happily at the feeling of you running a hand through his hair. "Good mornin', beautiful," he whispers.

"Hey there, Star-Lord," you chuckle softly. "Do you know how late we slept in? It's literally the afternoon."

"We can just spend the rest of the day in bed together, you know, fuck a few more times, then go back to sleep at night." He wiggles his eyebrows.

"How did I end up being so crazy about you?" you ask jokingly. He brings his lips to yours and passionately kisses you, a kiss of pure happiness. His hand goes to the back of your neck and pushes up against your hair. You fall deeply into the kiss, never wanting him to pull away. That way, you wouldn't have to talk to him about leaving.

"Can I ask you something?"

"Always," you nod.

"Have you...have you ever done this before?" he asks, clearly nervous.

"What do you mean?"

He smirks cooly and brings a hand to your face, caressing your cheek. "Ever made love with a legendary outlaw that saved the galaxy?" he mutters with a wink.

"I think you forget that I saved the galaxy too," you add, smacking his arm with a laugh.

"Okay, okay, I promise I have a real question." Peter hesitates as he thinks over his question for you. "Have you ever been with someone you have feelings for...or even loved?"

You think back to all of the dates you've been on and all of the people you've slept with. They were mostly Xandarians and even a few Terrans that managed to find their way into space as you and Peter had. You had fallen in love with a few of them but never like this. "I mean...I guess. I've definitely had feelings before and I was in love with some of the people I dated in the past but I don't think it's ever felt like this."

He smiles brightly at your words. "Like earth-shattering sex?"

You just roll your eyes and laugh. "What about you, you cocky son of a bitch, have you ever been in love before?"

Peter hesitates, his anxiousness returning. "I can't say that I have, no."

"Really?"

"Well, yeah. Y/N, you're the first girl to truly understand me. You laugh at all of my jokes and you love my personality, regardless of all of my flaws," he says, making your heart swell up with even more love. "I used to just flirt with a girl and spend the night with her only for one of us to leave the next morning. I've never taken the time to actually know someone to fall in love with them, and I am so glad I took that chance with you because you're perfect for me. I mean, I don't deserve you in the slightest but you chose to stick around anyway and I couldn't be happier."

You take his sweet words and reply with a kiss. "I adore you, Peter. You are by far the greatest guy I have ever met."

He just lays there for a minute, staring at you and smiling. "Y/N, I think we should stay here."

Well, here comes the discussion you have been dreading. "What?"

Peter gets up excitedly, pulling on his boxers as he speaks. "Think about it, Y/N! When Rocket and Groot fix the ship they can take Nebula to Xandar and then come straight here. My dad can teach me more about myself or about my mom. We can make our home here and then only use the Milano for missions and stuff!" His giddiness fades when he notices your expression does not resemble his in the slightest. "Wouldn't that be great?"

"We can't stay here," you assert. "Something about this place doesn't feel right and we need to leave the minute Rocket fixes our ship. The Milano is our home and that's final, Peter." You need him to listen to you, being stubborn and harsh might be the only way.

He furrows his brows at you in anguish. "What are you talkin' about?" he yells. "You're the one that made me come here!"

"Peter, something is really off about Ego and this planet." You try and stay calm, avoiding raising your voice back at him. "And Mantis is clearly nervous about something. I think she's afraid of this place. She definitely has information on Ego that she can't tell us."

"Why are you tryin' to take this away from me?"

"I'm not trying-"

"He's my father! He's blood!"

"You and I both have blood on Earth yet neither one of us returns there. So why bother staying here?" you snap.

"Again, you made me come here!" Peter shouts. "And Earth is the place where my mother died in front of me."

"No, it's because Earth is real and this place is a fantasy. That's why you can't bring yourself to leave it!"

"This is real! I'm only half-human, remember?" he retorts.

"That's the half I'm worried about," you say, standing with him to take his hands in yours. He instantly pulls away, almost breaking your heart.

"Oh, I get it," he scoffs. "You're just jealous because I'm part god and you and the rest of the team like when I'm the weak one."

"That's ridiculous. You're being an idiot," you mumble as you pick up your clothes off of the ground. You are already wearing your underwear and one of Peter's shirts that you must have slipped on last night. He notices you gathering your things and getting ready to leave. "I admire you, Peter, I would never think of you as weak. I'm surprised you would even say that."

"Y/N, what are you doing?" His voice is lower now as he tries to follow you around the room.

"I'm leaving because you're being a dick instead of listening to what I have to say," you reply, fuming. You go to retrieve the communication device from outside and then head to the doorway. "I haven't been able to reach Rocket since we left. I'm going to go outside and try to get a signal."

"Stay." He grabs your wrist, stopping you from leaving. His eyes find yours and he stares into them deeply.

"It's not safe here, Peter," you explain. You can tell he is confused and upset, but you don't have time for this. You need to find a way out of here, so you pull your arm from his grasp. "We are going to find a way out of here whether you like it or not. If you don't want to come with us then I guess this goodbye, Peter."

"You know what? This isn't Cheers after all!" Peter yells, frustration growing as he raises his voice at you. "It's whatever the show is where one person is willing to open themselves up to new possibilities, and the other person is a jerk who doesn't trust anyone! It's a show that doesn't exist! It's a show that would never be made because it would get zero ratings!"

"This isn't Cheers, Peter!" You scream back at him. "This isn't a tv show! This is real fucking life and the only person being a jerk here is you."

"I'm not being a jerk, Y/N, you're just not listenin' to me!"

You groan in annoyance and anger. "I am listening to you I'm just not agreeing with you. Apparently, it bruises your ego too much if I disagree."

"That isn't even remotely true."

"Then face the facts, Peter," you say more calmly. "You know this isn't the right place for us. We have to go."

Peter scoffs. "Well, I ain't goin'."

"I guess I'll just be another notch on your belt then," you state, turning on your heel as you leave the room. "I'm a fool for thinking you loved me."

"This isn't about love, Y/N," he calls out after you, causing you to stop in your tracks. "I finally found my family! Don't you understand that?"

You feel your eyes welling up with tears at his comment and from the entire fight itself. You try and shove them down as you turn to face him. "I thought you already had," you mutter, voice cracking with your sadness. With that, you leave the room and don't bother to look back.

You get dressed quickly, tossing Peter's shirt on the ground. You can't go return it to him after your fight. The conversation had gone way worse than you'd expected and you already assumed it would be bad. You wish he could understand that you need to get off of this planet as soon as possible. Your gut is telling you something is off or that Ego is bad, and Gamora even agrees.

Gamora. That's who you need right now. You duck outside, the sun starting to set on the breathtaking, orange horizon. You watch it rest in the sky for a while, the colorful trees and plants swaying beside you as you walk toward the plains, hoping to find your sister. You shake your head, you know this place is too perfect. Nothing in the galaxy is this unsettled and quiet with so much beauty.

"Y/N?" you hear in the distance ahead, pulling you from your thoughts. You look up to see Gamora, sitting in the plains next to some flowers.

"Gamora!" you call as you trudge toward her faster. "Peter and I got into a fight. He doesn't want to leave," you whisper quietly once you've caught up to her. You beginning choking up, unable to hold back tears as your mind wanders to the events from earlier today.

"It will be okay, Y/N." She drags you to her for a tight hug, rubbing your back to soothe you. You open your eyes amongst the crying and see something emerge into the atmosphere. It's a ship! Is it the Milano? The ship speeds forward right toward you and Gamora and your eyes widen in horror at the pilot. It's not Rocket with the Milano, it's Nebula.

"Gamora, we've gotta run," you state, pulling away from the hug to point at the ship.

She sees Nebula and gasps. "Damn it!" The two of you sprint away just as Nebula begins firing. The shots bounce off of the ground, luckily missing you each time. You retreat into a cave, running faster and faster as you enter, continuing to dodge the shots. "Psychopath!" Gamora shrieks.

To your surprise, Nebula leads the ship into the cave after you. The wings hit the rocks inside and the ship getting destroyed, but her fire never lets up. It's harder for you to see ahead of you now with ship pieces and dust flying everywhere, especially while being profusely shot at. Gamora takes your hand and jumps off of a small cliff, causing both of you to hit the ground. You groan loudly at the harsh impact and you watch as Nebula is unable to slow the ship down. She flies above you and slams into the edge of the cave, going up in flames.

Gamora launches herself up, appearing as if she's barely in any pain from the fall. She picks up one of the huge firearms that fell off the ship, wiring it to get it heated up. Gunshots flare immensely out of the weapon as she walks forward toward Nebula, screaming louder with every step.

Your jaw drops as you look through the window of the ship. In between the bullets bouncing off the glass you can make out Nebula. She's sitting in the pilot's seat, unable to get out. She is struggling with everything crushed around her, but she can't seem to get unstuck.

"Gamora!" you yell at your sister. "Gamora, stop! You'll kill her!" You chase after her, and just as you catch up the ship falls through the ground. It flips over in the fall and explodes upon impact.

Gamora tosses the gun aside and looks down the hole. You follow her, your eyes reflecting the bright orange from the flames. Grunting emits from the severely demolished ship. "She's still stuck down there," you murmur, turning to Gamora who doesn't seem affected at all. "I'm gonna go get her."

"Y/N, she was trying to kill us!" she announces as you make your way down by climbing from rock to rock.

"That doesn't mean she deserves to die, Gamora!" you shout back. "We were all sisters once."

Gamora reluctantly follows you to the ship. You get to the side where Nebula is sitting and you pull her out of the seat, trying to avoid getting tinged from the flames surrounding the three of you. Gamora assists by tugging on you as you yank Nebula out, dragging her across the ground.

In a split second, you're being launched in the air as the ship explodes. The fire barely grazes your face as the three of you scream, desperately hoping you're not about to burn to death. You all sit up slowly, holding your wounds and trying to catch your breath. Cracking sounds draw your attention to Nebula, who is snapping her robot parts back into place. Once she is stable, she lunges right at Gamora, straddling her and bringing her hand to her throat.

"Are you kidding me?" Gamora shrieks, punching Nebula off of her. The two take hits at each other but you are unable to interfere. Your body aches from being thrown so recklessly by the explosion. But when Nebula is choking Gamora to death with a knife ready to end her life in a split second, you know you have to do something.

Trying to keep steady as you stand up, you kick the knife out of Nebula's hand and shove her off of Gamora. "Both...of...you...stop...it..." you exhale, trying to catch your breath. "We're...we're...sisters..."

The two sisters look at each other, contemplating what you said. "I win," Nebula says. "I win! I bested you in combat."

"No, I win!"

"Nebula, we just saved your life!" you argue, interrupting their bickering.

"Well, you two were stupid enough to let me live."

"You let me live!" Gamora replies.

"I don't need you always trying to beat me!" she yells.

"I'm not the one that just flew across the universe just because I wanted to win!"

"Do not tell me what I want!" Nebula spits.

"I don't need to tell you what you want!" Gamora hisses. "It's obvious!"

"You were the one who wanted to win, and I just wanted a sister!" Nebula states. "After Y/N left, you were all I had," she tells Gamora. "But you were the one who needed to win. Thanos pulled my eye from my head and my brain from my skull and my arm from my body...because of you."

The three of you let out a sigh and stare off into the flames. There is too much fighting going on today, especially after such a wonderful night, and you hate it. When Nebula showed up, you expected fighting, a screaming match, or even a war. What you didn't expect were those words. Even though she has tried to kill you more than once, you still feel sorry for her. It isn't her fault she is pent up with so much anger.

"Nebula I...I'm sorry. I really-"

"No, Y/N, it isn't you. You made the right choice, escaping Thanos when you had the option. Any one of us would have taken that chance. I understand that now," Nebula explains. "We were still fairly young when you left, so we did not understand it then. That's why we took it out on each other, and it didn't help that Thanos trained us by making us attack one another until there was a victor."

"I'm sorry, Nebula. I didn't know you felt that way. I truly thought you agreed with Thanos' method," Gamora says quietly. Nebula just nods, the tension still pretty high between the two of them. Leaving when you did, you never knew how much chaos went down afterward.

"I may always have resentment toward you for allowing Thanos to do what he did each time you won, and I may always have some toward Y/N for never coming to save us," Nebula discloses honestly. You don't really blame her for feeling that way. "But for now we are fine, and we need to find a way out of here."

You help one another up and limp around the cave, avoiding pressing the wounds from today any further. Nebula is practically made of metal and most likely doesn't feel any pain and Gamora has the ability to heal quicker than average. You, however, are only human and have to rest over time to get better. Luckily, your pain is not too bad, but you know you'll still need to take some time to heal. You wish Peter were here to comfort you and make you feel better.

Many silent minutes pass as you trudge through the cave. The sun has set outside by now, making it harder to see in the dark of night. You think you see an opening and you all move toward it, stopping immediately in your tracks to stare in pure horror at what is actually there.

Bones.

The large pile consists of bones from many different bodies of all different species. You get an idea of who killed all of them and take a step back. "Holy shit."

"Oh my god," Gamora yammers.

Nebula gasps. "We need to get off this planet."

-

Peter sits on the couch in his quarters thinking about everything. He hasn't left the room at all today, unable to bring himself to go after you. He wants to go after you, so badly, but your argument still pisses him off. Why do you want to leave after he has just found his father? He understands maybe not wanting to stay here forever, but you should at least stay long enough for him to get to know Ego better. You had a lot of nerve telling him there was something wrong with the planet when he thinks everything is perfectly safe. Peter knows he can trust his dad, right?

With your final words still stinging his heart and buzzing around in his head, he stretches out across the couch. He presses play on his walkman and "Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)" by Looking Glass plays. Peter smiles to himself: his mother's favorite song. He misses her so much and she would know exactly how to help him at this moment.

"You alright, son?" Ego asks, entering the room and pulling Peter from his deep thoughts. Peter sits up, acknowledging his presence. "I saw your girl stomp off a little earlier in quite a huff."

"Yeah," he sighs.

"It's fortuitous...you listening to this song."

Peter raises an eyebrow. "You know...?"

"'Brandy'? By Looking Glass?" Ego chuckles. "A favorite of your mother's."

"Yeah, it was," he nods.

"One of Earth's greatest musical compositions, perhaps it's very greatest."

Peter straightens his posture in excitement. "Yeah! Yes!" He is happy to have his dad be the second person he's met in the galaxy to understand his music. The first, of course, is you.

"Peter, you and I, we're the sailor in that song," Ego addresses, confusing Peter. "He came on a summer's day, bringing gifts from far away, like the child I put in your mother or the freedom you brought Y/N," he clarifies for him. "Brandy, you're a fine girl, what a good wife you would be. But, my life, my love, my lady is the sea." He finishes singing to the lyrics. "The sea calls the sailor back. He loves the girl, but that's not his place. The sea calls upon the sailor as history calls upon great men, and sometimes we are deprived of the pleasures of mortals."

"Well, you may not be mortal, but me-"

"No, Peter, death will remain a stranger to both of us as long as the light burns within the planet."

"I'm immortal?" Peter questions, almost sarcastically. Ego nods. "Really?"

"Yes, as long as the light exists!"

"And I can use the light to build cool things like how you made this whole planet?"

Ego laughs. "Well, it might take you a few million years of practice before you get really good at it. But, yes!"

"What! This is..." Peter jumps from his seat in surprise. "Well get ready for an eight-hundred-foot statue of Pac-Man with Skeletor and Heather Locklear."

"You can do anything you want," Ego assures him.

"I'm gonna make some weird shit!"

Ego now stands up next to Peter. "But you know, Peter, it is a tremendous responsibility. Only we can remake the universe. Only we can take the bridle of the cosmos and lead it to where it needs to go."

"How?" he whispers, voice low. Ego makes a flicker of light in his hand, he follows him and does the same. Peter looks between the two powers of light in each hand and grins brightly. He is amazed.

"Come with me."
