Chapter 8

Despite its two overlapping suns, the planet Contraxia was as bitterly cold as the souls who dared visit its most infamous bar, the Iron Lotus. Located in a frenzied town of flashy buildings and neon lights, the Iron Lotus served a clientele primarily made up of Ravagers. The Ravagers were sort of like an underground brotherhood-some might call them space he called. "You just lost the business of ninety-nine by serving one."

"Please, sir." the owner begged from behind the counter. "Please!" Yondu watched as the rest of his gang, along with everyone else in the room, emptied the saloon. In the rest of his crew, including a man named Kraglin, Yondu's right hand man. They all looked expectantly to Yondu. Yondu jumped up from the seat, his jaw set in grim determination, and marched outside. In the freezing wind and snow, Yondu called out. "You know what? I don't care what you thinks of me!" "Then why you following us ?" the true leader of the Ravagers asked, turning to face Yondu, fists clenched.

"Cause you gotta listen to what I gotta say," Youndu spat back. his own arms braced in a defensive posture, in case it came to that. "I don't got to listen to listen to nothing!" the big man scoffed. "You betrayed the code. Ravagers don't deal in kids!" He yelled. "I didn't know what the cargo was!" Yondu interrupted. "All I knew is someone was paying a pretty penny for it!"

"Don't lie to my face Yondu," He sneered. He leaned in toward Yondu, who flinched slightly. "You didn't know 'cause you chose not to know, 'cause it made you rich!" The Ravager turned to walk away, but his point was clearly lost on Yondu, who yelled, " I demand a seat at the table! I wear these flames, same as you!" The battle-worn Ravager had seen others banished or killed-including Yin, The Ravagers's best warrior and former comrade. But he, himself, had never done it.

For a Ravager, it was a punishment almost worse than death. But he knew it must be done. Squaring his shoulders again, he turned back to face Yondu. "Yondu Udonta," he began, "you may dress like a Ravager, but you won't hear no Horns of Freedom when you die, and the colors of Ogord with not flash over your grave. You think I take some pleasure in exiling you? Like what happended with Yin. You're wrong. You broke all our hearts. May our paths never cross again." With that, the Ravagers stormed off into the snowy night.

Standing alone outside the Iron Lotus, Yondu felt the snow fall gently on his skin as the only way of life he'd ever known was ripped away from him. Well behind him, Yondu's crew huddled closer together. They saw their leader stripped of his status, and they wondered what that might mean for them. EIther way, the murmurs of mutiny began to spread among the group.

"First, the Quills betray us and Yondu just lets him go scot-free," whispered a monstrously large Ravager named Taserface. "Now he's gettin' all riled over nothing. We followed him 'cause he was the one who wasn't afraid to do what needed to be done." He gestured at the crushed-looking Yondu, standing alone in the snow. "Seems like he's going soft."

"If he's so soft, why you whispering for?" challenged Kraglin.

Taserface stared Kraglin dead in the eyes. Without blinking he said, "You know I'm right, Kraglin." Tullk stepped between the two men and warned, "You'd best watch what you say about the capt'n, Ta-" A sleek vessel landing in front of the Iron Lotus stopped him mid-sentence. As the doors opened, two Sovereign chamber maids rolled out a long blue cloth that stopped exactly at Yondu's feet. High Priestess Ayesha passed by the crew of Ravagers, ignoring them. Stopping at the end of the blue cloth, she forced a smile. So soft was her walk that Yondu hadn't heard her.

"Yondu Udnota," she said, her voice startling him as he turned to face her. "I have a proposition for you."

As white snow fell on his blue skin, Yondu considered his options. Seeing as he was no longer a Ravager, he didn't have many left. With his signture smirk, he cocked his head slightly, all ears.
