I knocked on the girl's door.
She quickly answered with a welcoming smile on her face, but that disappeared when the door was all the way opened.
"Please, please tell me you can hear me!" I pleaded. "Please let this be a prank!" I clasped my hands together. "Look I'm laughing, ha-ha, now please let this be over!"
She looked around. Her expression turned into concern with her eyebrows lowering and her dark brown eyes growing. Her gaze traveled to the door, tracing a part of it as if trying to figure something out. She moved to the other side to search there as well. I stepped in to look at what she was doing.
"What's going on?" she asked herself. After a couple seconds, she closed it; me inside.
"Um," I started. "Did you want me in here?"
Not even a word from her as the girl started walking into the other room. I dragged my feet behind her.
The house was filled with many decorations and paintings. She must have an eye for interior designing because it looked like something you would see in a magazine. The living room, dinning section, and kitchen were connected in an open concept.
I watched as she went into the kitchen section and started washing dishes. I'm the middle of cleaning, the phone began to ring. She put it on speaker so she could continue with the chore.
"Misook, Misook!" someone yelled from the other side of the line.
"Geez, Yunji, calm down." The girl said.
Misook. It's a pretty name. Pretty and clear. Unique. Suiting for her.
"Guess who has a date!" Yunji exclaimed.
"A date?" Misook asked, obviously becoming happy for her friend. "Tell me about it."
"You remember Jaehyun from that party last week? Well, we got to talking a little more. He's taking me to a movie tomorrow. You'll help me get ready, won't you?"
"Of course!" Misook giggled. "I'm so happy for you two. Congratulations, Jiji!"
"Thanks girl! See you tomorrow around three? My date's at 4:30. He's taking me for dinner afterwards."
"You can count on me! Bye."
"Bye!"
Misook hung up and her smile faded. She sighed, leaning against the counter.
"I shouldn't be upset," she whispered to herself. "Inna!"
A soft and fluffy gray cat came trotting into the open room.
"Awe, baby." Misook bent down to pick up the cat.
"That's a big cat," I chuckled, but immediately stopped when I remembered I wouldn't get a response.
"Oh, Inna! I shouldn't have thought Jaehyun would like me." She lightly bounced in place as if she were holding a real baby. "Of course, he went for Yunji. She's beautiful. She's funny. She's outgoing. She actually makes herself stand out. Unlike me."
Don't think of yourself like that, I wanted to say. You've already caught my attention. Even if I don't know who you are.
The cat looked around, and suddenly locked eyes with me. Mine widened in surprise. I stepped to the side, and the cat's eyes followed.
"Can you see me?" I asked, amused. Hope started to build inside of me.
Misook looked up in my direction. Her eyes met mine, but she just scanned past them. I felt a small tug in my chest as her eyes met with mine during that split second.
"What is it, Inna?" Misook stopped bouncing. "What do you see?" She looked down at the cat. Inna looked at Misook for a second with big green eyes, then back to me. A small 'meow' escaped its mouth.
"Inna, you silly kitty," Misook cooed in a baby voice. "There's nothing there!"
But I'm right here.
