Light shone as the Malano soared into the air. Tons of other ships from Yondu's crew like the Malano followed them and Ashen actually thought for a heartbeat that they stood a bit of a chance against Ronan.
However when they started toward the Dark Asher she instantly thought differently. It had to be hundreds or more ships soared full speed toward them. Even though Ashen was just sitting in the back strapped in next to Drax she felt her muscles tighten as if she was about to lunge for an enemy.
Beside her Grenade's fur fluffed up around his garment and she could tell that he was frightened out of her fur. He licked his lips in nervousness before his closed his eyes. Peter began firing at the oncoming Kree ships and every time the ship jolted a bit Grenade held his breath. He still wasn't keen on what he called 'forceful flying'.
"This is insane," Gamora confessed as she looked as nervous as the rest of them.
"Hey you're the one who said you wanted to die among friends," pointed out Peter, half in amusement and half being serious.
Ashen was about to join in on the conversation but she had nothing really to say. She just kept her muzzle shut and surveyed the battle intently. She watched as Yondu and Rocket drove a bit ahead of the pack and began to shoot at a specific spot on the Dark Asher, just like in the plan.
However even more of Ronan's followers were coming down and they were struggling to hold them off. "What if we're shot down before we make it," asked Ashen with round eyes as she looked to Grenade.
Grenade sunk his claws into the seat and groaned to stop from throwing up. "Then some one else is completely our mission for us."
Before Ashen knew it Yondu's ship was shot down. She wasn't that concerned considering that Yondu had tried to kill them in the first place. But she didn't say anything about it. She studied Peter's expression but it was unreadable.
When Rocket announced that it was ready Ashen was positive that they weren't going to make it. They might die sooner than Ashen had anticipated.
"There's too many of them Rocket," confessed Gamora and that was when Ashen knew things were dire.
"Somber if you're up there please help," she begged as her muscles tensed and her tail bristled to be twice it's size.
"Who are you muttering to canine," asked Drax as he looked over to Ashen.
Ashen looked to Drax and for once it didn't bother her that he still hadn't bothered to learn her name. "You lost your wife and daughter, right?"
"You are correct," Drax answered shortly with intent eyes still fixed on Ashen.
She heaved a sigh she smiled a bit but it was forced. "My brother was killed just like your family. I was asking him if he'd help us."
"Did he reply to you yet," pressed Drax and Ashen had no way of explaining to him that even if Somber did answer there was no way of knowing.
"I'm not sure," she confessed before she saw more Kree surging for them. She held her breath before they were shot by another ship that wasn't one of Yondu's. She tilted her head and saw the Nova Cora.
"Prove us wrong," muttered one of the men about Peter's message earlier.
Drax leaned over and stroked Ashen between the ears. She was startled out of her fur and blinked at him furiously. "Your magnificent brother has answered," he told her excitedly. "He has requested reinforcements in our assault on Ronan!"
Ashen was pretty sure that wasn't Somber but she just smiled and chuckled a bit, hoping he'd drop the subject and not bring it up later. "Er yeah I suppose he did," she rumbled before she looked to Grenade who rolled his now open eyes.
"Then one day I wish to meet your humble kin and sincerely thank him for aiding us in our mission," he bellowed.
Ashen dipped her head. "I'm sure he's keeping your family company until you join them," she barked and she could tell from the way his eyes lit up that he instantly believed her.
"Then your species is one of extreme honor and worth to me." He ruffled the fur between her ears and she felt as if he had jolted her skull a bit too hard. "I will never enjoy the taste of your flesh or of your companion's flesh again."
"You ate wolf and cat," hissed Grenade as rage wafted from him. "What kind of sick person does that."
Drax's eyes hardened. "I am not sick. I feel exceedingly healthy."
Grenade looked like he wanted to claw Drax's eyes out. "No I mean why would you eat that?"
Drax looked like Grenade was speaking in a different language. "It is extremely delectable," he answered. "We continue to roast them on a fire and sometimes devour them whole."
Ashen felt her fur prickle and wondered if Drax was looking at her like a snack. "Wonderful," she muttered, half to herself.
"Keep it down back there!" called Peter over his shoulder as they set their path to the Dark Asher. "We're going in."
That was fine with Ashen. She really didn't want to engage in that deep of a conversation with Drax. She just sat back and watched as they surged toward the Dark Ashen. She held her breath and prayed all went well.
