Chapter 2
The body dropped to the ground. Dip's blood poured onto the cold, dead grass. The girl dropped to her knees, probably of reassurance.
"What do you think you're doing?!" Peter shouted. His eyes were aflame with fury. Gunner just stared at Dip's body in shock. Peter rolled up his sleeves. I had made a terrible mistake. I ran past him, pushing him into the bushes. I grabbed the girl's hand.
"Run!" She ran as fast as her tiny legs could carry her. She tripped over and over, but I pulled her faster. I almost ran face-first into the truck, but I stopped just short. I opened the car door. "Get inside!" She didn't hesitate. Peter caught up with me and was about to jump me. But I held my gun up to his face. "Leave me alone," I shouted. "Or I'll shoot. Don't follow us. Don't ever think of seeing us again."
"You are too scared to be a part of this group anymore!"
"No, I'm not scared. I'm just realizing how evil you are. How are you going to sleep tonight? With the guilt of trying to murder a child!" I started to back into the driver's seat, with my gun still raised. He didn't step any closer to me since I had the ability to easily kill him. "Give me the keys."
"No."
"Give me the keys, or I'll shoot!"
"Shoot me then!" I stared at him. But he wasn't staring at me. He was staring at the girl in the back of the truck. I couldn't pull the trigger. I couldn't kill another man tonight. "I thought so." Peter slowly stepped toward me. I knew I couldn't save the girl. "Drop the gun." I did. My hands still shook like crazy. As my hands went up in surrender, the car keys dropped into my hands. I looked up. Gunner! Peter swung around. "What do you think you're doing!" Peter ran to Gunner and shook him, but Gunner knocked him out. Peter's muscular body dropped to the ground with a thud.
"Drive! Never come back, Red!" I nodded and slammed the car door. I sped out of the neighborhood and didn't stop speeding for about an hour. Then I started normally.
"Thanks," said a small and meek voice from the back of the car.
"Don't mention it." I paused. "I'm so sorry about tonight. Those men are horrible people.
"No." I almost had a heart attack when I heard those words.
"No? They kidnapped you and were gonna mur-"
"Yes that is true, but you don't know him like I do."
"What do you mean?"
"He's my dad. Peter is my dad."
"Peter has a kid?"
"Two, actually. Eddie is at home, he's only a few weeks old."
"Why did he take you?"
"I don't know. But he's not bad. He just has a messed up life. Mom," she hesitated.
"What about your mom?"
"Mom is bad. Mom drinks a lot and-" She stopped again. I didn't ask her to go on. But I did ask her another question.
"What is your name?"
"Elizabeth. But you can call me Liz." I stopped the car. Cars behind me honked, but I didn't care.
"I haven't heard that name since tenth grade. My name is Liz."
