Chapter 23
I just love Aaron's voice for this song, just gives me chills. Sets the mood for the chapter and how Ethan is feeling.
Get your tissues ready, this is really heartbreaking.
Middle of the night before the funeral.
Ethan lays in bed restlessly closing his eyes and opening them a few minutes later, not able to sleep. He gets up and goes to the living room, turns on his stereo and puts on "See You Again" and sings to a picture of his father, tears falling onto the picture as he sings. As he sings, he feels his heart breaking all over again from the pain of losing his parents, they were taken too soon from him and it's a pain he can't bear to feel.
After the song is over, he plays the list of songs for the picture slide show and just sits on the couch, crying as the songs play.
Morning and day of the funeral.
Around eight he wakes up and looks around and sees he's on the couch. He gets up and goes to the kitchen to put a pot of coffee on.
He walks into his room and gets a gray suit out with a baby blue dress shirt and a purple tie. His mom loved the colors purple and baby blue. He goes to take a shower after giving Jake a kiss on the cheek.
After he's done, he gets out and puts a towel around his waist and goes back to the kitchen to pour a cup of coffee and goes to the bathroom to dry off and get dressed.
As he is about done putting his shirt on Jake appears at the doorway looking at him.
"Good morning handsome." Jake says smiling at Ethan.
"Good Morning. I put coffee on and put out a fresh towel for you, you can use my shower stuff. I'm going to make some eggs and bacon. Come down when you're done." Ethan said as he put the hair gel in his hair and sprayed cologne on.
"Alright. Thank you."
"You're welcome. I need to be at the funeral home in an hour."
"Don't worry, I'll be ready in time."
"Ok." He kissed Jake softly before walking out. He gets the eggs and bacon out and his phone rings.
"Hello? Yes, it starts at eleven Em, yes I have someone with me, no I'm driving by myself so you don't need to come over and pick me up I promise. Yes, I will see you soon,I love you too." He hangs up and starts cooking.
As the food gets done Jake walks into the kitchen. Ethan about drops the plate on the island when he sees Jake.
Jake is wearing a stunning shiny black suit with a navy-blue dress shirt and silver tie. He has an earing in and a silver necklace and watch. His hair is spiked, and he has on black dress shoes and a black belt.
"Wow, you look amazing. I haven't seen you dressed up before. You look dashing."
"Thank you, you look breathtaking yourself. You should see me in my dress blues, they won't stay on long if you ever do see me in them." He chuckles and Ethan smiles.
"Here eat before it gets cold." They sit and eat the food and drink a cup of coffee. After they finish Ethan grabs his phone and his keys and wallet.
They walk out and get in the truck. Ethan takes a slow deep breath and lets it out slowly.
"You can do this, you can do this. You have people who are there for you, lean on them, don't hold it in." He says to himself and Jake just watches him. He starts the truck and takes the short but very long drive to the funeral home.
When he pulls in he sees Emma, Eric who is her husband, Ashley Alex and Aaron standing in front with a bunch of other people waiting. He parks the truck and closes his eyes and sighs.
"I'm right here Ethan, right beside you the whole time."
"Thank you, it's just starting to hit me now that I'm here."
"I know, remember, one minute at a time." Ethan nods and gets out of the truck.
Jake gets out and Ethan walks over to him and he grabs Jake's hand and squeezes it. They make their way over to his friends and instantly Emma hugs him tightly.
"I'm so sorry Ethan." She says as she hugs him.
"Thank you, Emma. You Look lovely. Hey Ashely, Alex." They hug him and say sorry before letting him go.
"Eric." Eric hugs Ethan and he holds his tears back.
"Hey man, anything you need, just say the word, were all here for you."
"Thank you, I just need to get through this without falling apart."
"If you do, it's ok. You are only human, you don't need to be strong today Ethan." Aaron says and hugs him.
"I know. So everyone, this is Jake, my boyfriend. Jake, this is Emma, my best friend and her husband Eric, this is Ashley and her husband Alex, they both work for me at the business and this here is Aaron, he's like security but also a good friend. Jake here is a Major in the Marines and he was so kind to come home with me after the news of my family. He has been nothing short of amazing so please, treat him kindly."
"Of course, I mean we wouldn't want to tell him embarrassing stories of you or anything." Emma said smiling.
"Do it and I will tell Eric more of yours lil lady." Ethan said chuckling.
"Ok you win." She said putting her hands up.
"It's a pleasure to meet you all, I wish it weren't like this though." Jake said and shook their hands.
"Nice to meet you as well sir." Eric said, extending his hand to shake Jake's.
"You as well but please, no formalities today. I'm just Jake, nothing else before or after my name."
"You got it Jake. Wow that's weird to say to an officer." He laughed, and Jake smiled.
Jake sees Ethan looking in through the open doors and squeezes his hand gently.
"You ready to go sweetheart?" Jake asked Ethan. He doesn't take his eyes off the slide show.
"No but I have to so let's go." They all walk in and sign the guest book.
They stand in front of the slide show and watch it for a little bit, listening to the songs and looking at the happy photos of Ethan and his family.
"That is so touching Ethan." Eric Said.
"It took me a while to do it, I kept choking up making it. I almost didn't finish it, but I had to. These photos are the most special ones of us. Mom loved these ones the most." Ethan fights the tears that are threatening to escape his eyes.
He sighs and walks into the room where the service is being held.
He stops when he sees two coffins in a row and about two hundred people sitting there and "See You Again." is playing and Ethan takes a seat in the front row with Jake beside him and his friends beside Jake.
The pastor enters and stands at the podium and asks everyone to bow their head in prayer before starting the service. After an hour everyone who wanted to speak had made a speech and it was Ethan's turn. He slowly walks up and stands there looking at the floor trying to gather himself before speaking.
"For those of you that knew my mom and dad know what kind of people they were, they had the biggest hearts you could ever imagine someone having. They welcomed anyone into their home and helped anyone who needed it. They were angels on earth gracing us with their love and patients.
They were amazing parents and I am blessed to have had them as my parents. When I got the news of their passing, I was already mourning the loss of someone whom I loved dearly. I gotta tell ya, losing three people inless than a week is not the easiest thing to go through. If it weren't for my good friends over in Iraq where I have been since a couple days ago, I wouldn't be here right now.
The loss I feel I can't put into words, I don't know how to describe the feeling of my heart and soul being torn apart from me.
My little brother, Chris. He is fighting for his life and he has no idea what happened to our parents, I keep hearing his amazing laugh every time I close my eyes and he has a huge heart. He cares with everything in him about me, he is like my twin. He was going to go to college and learn the business like I did, and we were going to run it together when it came time for us to and now...I have no idea if he is even going to wake up." Ethan stopped talking and felt a lump in his throat and wiped his eyes. He Takes a breath.
"Now he's fighting and there isn't a thing I can do for him. I ask you to please pray for him to wake up soon.
Mom, gosh what do I say about you? You were so wise and brought me up to be the man I hope you were proud of. You had taught me so much about life and love and showed me how to open my heart up to someone. You never judged me for being gay, you embraced it and loved me even more. I love you to the depth of my soul mama and I miss you something fierce.
Dad, dad you were the strongest man I have ever known. You raised me to be proud of who I am, you showed me what it was like to be tough but fair, strong but soft when need be. You have been there from my first heartbreak to my first real love and everything in between. I have no idea how I'm going to get through having my first child and a husband without you since you were there for all my firsts. I love you dad, from the bottom of my heart and soul I love you. Mom and dad, you will never ever be forgotten and will always be loved by me and everyone else who knew you. Rest in peace and I will see you again someday. Keep an eye on me and guide me when I'm lost like you did when you were alive. I love you so much." By the time Ethan was finished tears soaked his cheeks and everyone had tears falling and sniffling and crying.
Ethan sat down, and he looked at Jake who also was crying.
"Are you ok?" Ethan asked. Jake nodded and put an arm around Ethan and hugged him.
The pastor tells everyone it will be a few minutes before they get ready to go to the cemetery. Ethan and the group walk out, and then stops when he sees Ryan Standing at the door with tears in his eyes.
He walks over to him and he hugsEthan tightly.
"I'm so sorry Ethan." Is all he says and Ethan cries even more. He holds him for a few minutes and lets him go. They join the others and walk outside. Ethan lights up a smoke.
"Ethan, that speech." Emma said.
"I wrote it on the plane, was it alright?"
"Oh darlin, it was beautiful and so heartfelt. They were proud of you and they raised a fine man Ethan. You never forget that, ok?" She said hugging him and crying.
"I won't. Thank you, Emma." She let him go and looked up at him.
"Thank you all, if it weren't for you, I wouldn't be able to make it through today. We still have to..." He closes his eyes and tears fall silently.
"We know, it's ok. We're here baby, we're not going anywhere." Jake said putting his hand on Ethan's cheek softly.
A few minutes later they all get in their vehicles. Ethan chose to drive, he didn't want to be in the hearse with his mom and dad, he couldn't choose who to ride with, so he decided to drive.
Jake is on the passenger side and Ethan turns on the radio and "Drink A Beer" comes on.
"Perfect timing huh?" Ethan scoffs.
"It's like God knows already." Ethan said turning it up even louder. He waits in line after the three cars pull out with his mom and dad and gets behind them.
Highlights on bright and windows down and music up. The drive is spent in silence just music playing and the wind blowing into the truck. "I Drive Your Truck." Comes on after a bit and Ethan hits the steering wheel and cries as it plays, and he sings it with so much heart that it makes Jake tear up. "One Hell Of An Amen" plays after that.
"This song, this one's my favorite song. Why are all these songs playing in a row, it's like it was planned..." He stops talking.
"What?"
"Only person who could have been behind this is Emma, she would have called the radio station or sent an email and explained what happened and sent them a list of songs to play on the way to the cemetery. She knows music is how I heal and get through things so I'm sure she did this, it's the only thing I can think of for these songs to be playing right now. She knows this is the only station I listen to and I always have it on when I'm driving."
"That's really sweet of her, it seems like she cares a great deal about you."
"Yea, she's the best friend anyone could ask for. She and I have been through a lot." A few minutes later they arrive and drive down the road to the area where his family will be buried.
They park and get out.
He stands by the truck and waits for Emma. When he sees her, he grabs her and pulls her into a hug.
"Thank you." Is All he said, and she looked up at him.
"You're welcome." They had an unspoken understanding between them that there weren't many words needed for certain things, they knew what each other meant with a few words.
"What did she do?" Eric asked.
"Did you listen to the songs on the radio darlin?" She asked him.
"Yea, they were sad."
"Well I did that, I set it up for them to play the songs on the drive here for Ethan."
"You are amazing Emma, I love you."
"I love you too Eric."
They all walk hand and hand over to the chairs that are in front of the two coffins now and Ethan sits in the middle of both.
The preacher stands up and again asks everyone to bow their heads in prayer. After he was finished, he spoke for a little bit and a few other people stood up and spoke.
Ethan stands up after the last person sits down and walks over to his dad. He leans down and kisses the coffin and places a rose on top of it, he does the same thing with his mom. He stands at the end of his mom's and Jake stands up and says goodbye to them and the next person does the same.
After everyone says goodbye and gives Ethan their condolences and sits down after each person does so, the last person is Ryan. He places a rose on his dad's coffin, and his moms but he also stands in front Ethan's dad's.
"Your son is a good man, which you know that, he loves you very much. When he talked about you, he had such pride in his eyes for you. I'm sorry I didn't get the chance to meet the man who meant the world to Ethan. Rest in peace sir." Ethan had tears in his eyes at Ryan's Words.
"Thank you, that was nice of you to say Ryan."
"It was the truth, again I'm truly sorry for your loss Ethan." Ryan hugs Ethan and kisses his cheek. Ethan smiled and thanked him.
Everyone made their way to their vehicles after Emma announced they were having a get together at Ethan's house later in the evening. Ethan is still standing next to his parents.
Jake Emma Eric Alex Ashely and Aaron are all standing next to the remaining vehicles just waiting on Ethan. About an hour later he walks to his dad and tells him he loves him and tells him goodbye, the same for his mom.
He makes his way over to his friends and Jake.
"Are you ok?" Jake asked, and Ethan just shook his head. He Walks to his truck and gets in.
"Well see you all at the house?" Jake asked.
"Yes, well be there soon." Emma said.
They all get in their cars and drive off.Ethan still hasn't moved. He just keeps looking in the rear view mirror and he sees his dad being put into the ground, followed by his mom.
Tears stream down his face silently.
"Goodbye, I love you and miss you dearly." He whispers as he watches them being buried.
Jake looked back and sighed softly.
"So that's what you were waiting on?" Ethan nodded.
"I couldn't leave without watching. I needed it."
"I understand. Do you want to get out of here now, go home and relax before your company shows up?"
"Yea." He starts the truck and a half hour later they are at his house. There are a lot of cars already there and people inside the house.
He parks in the garage and gets out and goes into the house from the garage door.
He walks in and sees people everywhere.
"So much for relaxing before people show up." He said to Jake and headed up to his room.
